By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Feb 3, 2010 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb, bloggers and forum crew alike, will bring you our current favorite, funnest, most useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch, and soon… iPad!) related, they’re fair game. Confession: in all the iPad hubbub last week, Rene didn’t get around to posting everyone’s pick. Bright side, you get almost twice as many this week! So who’s on deck this double-dose and what are our picks? Find out after the break! Apple’s new MobileMe Gallery app is awesome. I really like the way it previews photos at the top (just like Apple TV) and you can easily share photos, albums or movies. Adding friend’s galleries are bonus too! I just wish you could comment Read More

Classics ebook app free for a limited time

I generally do not mind paying for an iPhone app, but at the same time I like free apps. And I like free apps even more when they are not normally free. It makes me feel like I am getting a real deal. That said, the iPhone app Classics has (for an unspecified amount of time) been lowered from its regular price of $2.99 to free. Yup, you can head on over to the App Store and download it right now — and pay nothing. We have mentioned Classics here on iPhoneFreak before, but just to offer a recap for those that may have missed it. Classics is an ebook reader, and one that has an super nice interface. It also comes with a selection of, you guessed it, classic book titles. As of now Classics has titles such as Through The Looking Glass, The Art of War, Frankenstein, Dracula, Treasure Read More

If you are an iPhone or iPod touch user and you want to make your iDevice look like an iPad, you can easily do that now thanks to RoryPiper. You must first jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch, and to do that see our Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 or Jailbreak iPod touch 3.1.2 post. If you don’t have WinterBoard, see our download and install WinterBoard post for instructions. Open Cydia and search for Simple iPad theme, and install it. Open WinterBoard and tap on the Simple iPad theme to activate it, and then exit WinterBoard. The iPad has a new App Store for just eBooks called iBooks, but there is a similar app in the App Store called Classics which is very similar. I don’t read the printed word any more because I just don’t trust objects that can’t be charged with electricity. However, there is a little something to be said about the feeling of turning a page instead of just scrolling down a stream of uninterrupted text, and so this limited time offer to download the Classics ebook app for free is interesting. Classics features over a dozen literary classics (the devs sometimes add a few more via an app update), and every title features chapters and cover art. I personally still prefer Stanza because of the built-in bookstore and the ability to add most any other book you own, but Classics’ main strength right now is the great page-turning animations.  It’s silly, but I sometimes think I’ll get a paper cut from the bloody thing. The iTunes Store doesn’t say how long the sale will be around, but I know it’s Read More
Apple's new iBooks sure looks like Classics iPhone app
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Jan 2010 16:01:00 UTC +00:00
When Apple unveiled their new iBooks application during the launch of the much-anticipated and unfortunately named iPad tablet computer, many people noticed its similarity to the well-known Classics iPhone app. Classics [iTunes link], if you're not familiar with it, is an iPhone app that gives you access to read over a dozen public-domain books. There are lots of ebook readers available for the iPhone, but where Classics sets itself apart is with an exquisite user interface that mimics the feeling of going to a bookshelf, getting a hardcover book, and paging through it. It's likely that the bookshelf metaphor in Classics was inspired by Delicious Library, a Mac app for cataloging books, media, and anything else you want to catalog. But aside from the bookshelf, Classics presents the books on a slightly yellowed, paper-like background, and animates page turns with a satisfying swipe of the finger, and an audible riffling of Read More

Update: So there is a bit more to this story than once thought.  Apparently Delicious Library, a media manager for Mac OS X created by Delicious Monster, was the first known piece of software to use a virtual bookshelf to display content.  According to TechCrunch, Wil Shipley, the founder of Delicious Monster, believes Apple borrowed the idea for iBooks without licensing it.  This is fairly believable considering some of Delicious Monster’s original employees actually work for Apple. As one of our readers, izdale, has highlighted in the comments section below, the Classics developers have stated their design was inspired by Delicious Library, and they apparently asked for approval before releasing the app. It’s possible that Apple took the design from Delicious Monster, but in the end it’s a difficult argument to make.  I mean, where would you put your virtual books?  On a virtual bookshelf, right? – During yesterday’s iPad presentation, it Read More
iBooks could be US-only at launch
Calendar16 Thu, 28 Jan 2010 18:00:00 UTC +00:00
Apple Australia has published iPad content to their site, and some keen-eyed observers have noticed what's missing. The list of features explained on the site includes much of what we saw yesterday -- Safari, Mail, YouTube, video ... all but iBooks and the iBookstore. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see a footnote stating that iBooks will be U.S.-only at launch. In the meantime, all iPhone/iPod touch apps will run on the iPad, international uses can grab the Kindle app [Free - iTunes link] (the irony is not lost on us), Classics [Free - iTunes link] or any of the other ereaders in the App Store [iTunes link]. Of course, we're a few months out of launch so things might change. But we're not holding our breath. Read More
Disponible: App Store Precio: Gratis Read More

Tony M. | Jan 27, 2010 User rating: ( votes, average: out of 5)  Loading ... Classics is on sale for free – normally $2.99 Classics is an extremely impressive book library for your iPod Touch and iPhone. Classics is streamlined, quick, and doesn’t lag, unlike many other book apps. The library to choose from is pretty unique, ranging from The Call of the Wild to The Art of War, and the selection is pretty beefy, clocking in about 20 full-length works. The books are a joy to flip through, and the app has a set of rather neat features (bookmarks, reading multiple books at once) that set it apart from other mobile bookshelves. Andrew Kaz and Phill Ryu created an impressive app that’s already a favorite in the app store, and is a fantastic deal right now. Edit: Almost forgot this link again, but I caught myself. Apple Takes On Amazon With iBooks, iPad’s New eBook App
Calendar16 Wed, 27 Jan 2010 20:40:15 UTC +00:00
When rumors of an Apple tablet started to hit the web, the first thing that came to most people’s minds was that it would be a Kindle killer.  Well, it’s certainly too early to assume that, being that the device won’t be shipping for another two months, but it will at least be able to compete with the Kindle thanks to a new native eBook app called iBooks. iBooks looks strikingly similar to the well-known iPhone eBook app Classics.  It gives you access to tons of different books ranging from classics to bestseller from some of the biggest publishers, such as Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette. iBooks uses the standard ePub format, so hopefully it will be cross-platform with other online stores. When you purchase a book, it will be placed and displayed on your personal bookshelf.  To read a book, simply tap it and it will open Read More
iBooks App & iBook Store
Calendar16 Wed, 27 Jan 2010 19:51:52 UTC +00:00
The new Apple iPad, as widely anticipated, will have an e-book reader built-in to the device. The iBooks app displays a bookshelf of all your titles alá Delicious Library or the Classics iPhone app. When you tap a book to read, you can tap on the right or left edge to flip the page or drag the page manually. When looking at your bookshelf, there is also a button to the iBook Store to purchase books. The iBookstore will allow for browsing and purchasing books on the iPad. What is exciting is that this new feature will rely on the ePub standard rather than some proprietary Apple format. ePub was developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum and works on several devices and platforms like the Sony Reader and Adobe Digital Editions for your desktop computer. You can think of it as the “MP3″ of e-book formats. Five large publishers (Penguin, Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Jan 27, 2010 | As part of their iPad announcement today, Apple introduced a new app called iBooks (hey, there’s that old name!) which they said stands on the shoulders of Amazon to go a little further. The initial GUI looks a lot like the iPhone ebook app Classics [iTunes link]. As rumored, $14.99 for a new “hardcover” book is the selling price. You can tap to change pages or swipe, and readers can choose their own font and size from a small list including Baskerville, Cochin, Palatino, Times, and Verdana. It uses standard ePub format, so hopefully it will be cross-compatible with a lot of other stores and existing collections. [Image via GDGT] Read More

BookReader for iPhone: You can't judge a book by its cover
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Oct 2009 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
BookReader [iTunes Link] , a US$4.99 app for devices running OS 2.21 or higher, has just joined the crowded eBook market -- but it brings little to the table to recommend itself. The app when first run looks beautiful. You are shown a wonderfully rendered bookshelf which looks very similar to the one found in Classics [iTunes Link], but a bit more nicely rendered, showing the spines of books instead of covers in a scrolling list. Impressive, but now what? I really had no idea since there were no instructions on how to operate the app either in the app, or on the Readdle site. This, as I've often said, is a major downfall of many of the apps in the store. It would be fine if it were an adventure game, but not at all acceptable in something offering utility that you would like to get at quickly. The only Read More
App Classics: The App Store's Missing Hall of Fame
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Oct 2009 14:55:52 UTC +00:00
Despite Apple's recent addition of the "Apps for Everything" section to their website, a new feature that makes it easier for iPhone owners to find great apps by category, the sad truth is that app discovery is still a challenge that needs to be solved. Thanks to some 75,000 applications now live in the iTunes App Store, there are just too many to sort through these days. Numerous startups have sprung up, offering their own solutions to this problem, including AppBeacon, Freshapps, 16apps, Appsfire, Appolicious, AppShopper and others. However, no one site has figured out the perfect formula just yet. Now another online catalog hopes to succeed where others have floundered. The brand-new App Classics aims to be the "App Store's missing Hall of Fame," featuring only the apps that have stood the test of time and are worth the download. It’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good. But back to those commercials. All three highlight popular and unique iPhone apps, some of which have already been featured in previous commercials. Let’s take a look at the apps featured in each commercial. The first ad is called Dine and features a smattering of apps covering a range of different topics, including travel, dining, working and shopping. Here’s a breakdown of the apps featured. TripCase (Free) — Flight tracking, info and travel itinerary management app. Quite a few not so great reviews on this one, but it is free. Were you watching the two-hour season premiere of House last night on Fox? Maybe you were watching one of the other prime-time shows, but if you had your eyes on the screen during some of the commercial breaks, you probably saw at least one of the three new iPhone ads that hit the airwaves last night. Each of the new ads highlights a total of six apps, up from the three that were formerly the focus of the older ads. The first ad I saw last night, "Dine," looks at Zagat to Go, QuickOffice, TripCase, New York Subway 09, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, and Gap Style Mixer. eBook Roundup: 8 Apps for iPhone readers
Calendar16 Thu, 13 Aug 2009 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
An e-book (or ebook, or eBook, depending upon who you ask) is the digital equivalent of a paper book. According to KiwiTech, the publishers of Classics2Go, the market for eBooks has increased more than 60% over the last six years and growth from this point is expected to be very strong. We can reasonably connect the start of this burgeoning market to the release of the Amazon Kindle in 2007. Strong sales convinced some wary readers that this was a viable option. You could carry a few hundred books under your arm, and the reading experience was, well, acceptable. Going on a long trip? Wouldn't it be nice to take about 20 pounds of paper out of your luggage? 2007 also marked the introduction of the iPhone; it took about a year for eBook apps to appear on the iPhone. Now there are so many of them that finding the right Read More

The Classics app for the iPhone “ which is a self-contained ebook reader offering a collection of famous literary works in one elegant package “ has just had an update, and added a little more great content to its shelves. The titles added in Version 1.3 are: ‘Through the Looking Glass ‘ by Lewis Carroll, ‘The Odysssey ‘ by Homer, and ‘The Art of War ‘ by Sun Tzu. If I ‘ve counted right, that brings it up to a total of 23 great works contained in the app.  With the great content offered and excellent presentation of it, this is a heck of a good $0.99 app. Check out the latest version in the App Store, HERE. Steampunk Tales: A monthly magazine for your iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Jun 2009 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
When I was in high school, I learned about "penny dreadfuls" and their American counterpart, "dime novels." Steampunk Publishing is re-creating these popular publications by releasing what they bill as the first on-going magazine for the iPhone featuring pulp fiction -- in this case, stories set in the steampunk genre that is a take on our modern world through the eyes of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. These stories are a great fit for this type of experimental publication, and doing this magazine through the iPhone is a great way to reap the rewards of a pulp fiction magazine without having to worry about the costs associated with a print run. The initial volume of Steampunk Tales #1 [link opens iTunes] contains 10 stories between 4,500 and 11,000 words. The included reader strives to recreate a Victorian-era feel as much as a possible, with a paper-like background and lavish fonts -- Read More

Stanza: download 10 free e-books from Random House and thousands more from other sources. I love reading books on my iPhone, but I don't love e-book prices. I mean, digital content requires no printing, binding, shipping, storage, or heavy lifting--so why does Amazon charge the same price for the Kindle edition of "The Kite Runner" as for the paperback? That's a debate for another day (though let me go on record saying I'd buy a lot more e-books if they were priced in the $1 to $4 range). For now, let's look at ways you can read on the cheap--or, at least, the cheaper--on your iPhone. Kindle: read a sample chapter of any book in Amazon's library before you spend your money. Wow! Just…wow!!
Kscherer MacLife 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
What an exceptional little app! I predict these guys sell a million of these. The software is very easy to use and looks fantastic. The books are legible and easy to read and I love the fact that the developers went after the "classics" rather than new releases. The stories they have chosen are timeless and exceptional reading. I buy a lot of the classics in hard-back and will continue to do so, but I will also come back for more of whatever these guys release.
Interface A+, Usefulness C-
seldomrc 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Definitely a wonderful interface, but this first version lacks two features of great importance to a reader: ability to adjust font size, and ability to add one's own books from the millions of classics out there.
Excellent start, room to grow...
Saibot Rex 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The UI is nearly perfect, but a few small cracks in the armor are already showing. There is an awkward pause when opening a book with no smooth animation to cover it up. The wonderful cover art is also never really seen full screen. Why not? And why no option to jump to a certain page number. If you're never going to use it, then why are the numbers on every page? My hope is that as more classic titles are rolled out we will be treated to a few UI refinements as well. And once we do get more books, how about the option to delete a title?
Beautiful, but don't miss the point
Jon M. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I think some people are missing the point of this app and asking for things it cannot do. What makes it so beautiful is it's designed and formatted just like a printed book, using attractive type and nice spacing, with no widows and orphans. How could they possibly maintain that beauty if the reader could change the type size? And how could they add the ability to plug in your own classic texts when those texts aren't yet formatted? It would end up like the other readers and lose its distinction.
Beautifully Designed Reading Experience
rmpenguino 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Classics combines analog queues with modern convenience, making digital reading a wonderfully unique experience. Enjoy custom design and illustration of public domain titles, sliding population of shelves, intuitive drag and drop organization, scrolling and loading of titles. Plus the feature developers obviously have gone out of their way to implement; a warmly responsive pagination and reading experience. Absolutely love the detailed design of each interface element, the flat and rustic feel of books, pages, shelves and even the icon. Book outline elements create a trompe-l'œil from the reading screens, conveying tactile feedback and that familiar feeling of holding a classic. Combined with the navigation bar as progress meter and familiar metaphors such as the bookmark on exit make this application an absolute delight to use. Anxiously awaiting future titles, more custom designs and enhancements like search, zooming and customized preferences. Perhaps some people will get tired of the pagination effect or simply appreciate scrolling as faster means of devouring those thicker classics. Such is the elegance in implementation of details throughout this application, it would not be surprising in some future version an effect for reaching those last few pages where the thickness of a book denotes the end of another wonderful classic. Maybe it is even wrong to want the ability of reading all digital books this way, because this custom reading experience is so beautifully designed one does not wish to spoil a classic.
Fantastic
KevyH 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the first review I've ever written in iTunes. The interface for this app is gorgeous. It makes reading the books on the iPhone actually a pleasure. I hope this program becomes the interface for every book on the iPhone. At least it deserves to be.

Good Start, Updates Needed
Manveru 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
As nearly every other reviewer has noted, this is a very pretty application. While using Classics, I actually forgot I was reading on my iPod. Stanza is a fantastic and flexible application, but, in using it, I am always aware that I am reading from a small electronic device - making getting lost in any literature very difficult.
Wonderful experience

The care and detail is so wonderful. Tremendously pleasurable. This truly is an enriching application. You can skip to chapters after touching the icon in the upper right. Lots of grace notes. The silk bookmark slides down when closing out, the speed of the page turn changes if you tap or drag slowly. Good selection of public domain books. At some point some current titles will be great. I love it, though. Who said " people don't read anymore?" We are here and these new ereaders prove who valuable storytelling remains, be it with quill, press or pixel.
Simply Beautiful

The best book reader for the iPhone. Everything looks perfect, and the book selection is great. I really can't wait for the new books in the free updates, but for now I know I'll start with 20,000 Leagues.
This is a marvel!

I just finished reading Robinson Crusoe and are halfway through The Hound of the Baskervilles. Just pure reading pleasure.
Superb!

This e-book reader far exceeds the standard e-book formats presently available anywhere on the iTunes app store in style, ease of use, and class. Simply beautiful! Good job & great app!!!
Instant Classic

LOVE the look, feel and function of the app. Let me be the first to say it... "Instant Classic." An iPhone app done right.
Wonderful

I'm a huge fan of the Classic app! I love reading these gems. now I can have a whole shelf of them in the palm of my hand. Really elegant interface. A pleasure :)
One of the best paid apps
nim 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great idea, beautiful UI, and I'm sure it will continue to get better. Great for the morning Subway ride and people like me who can't be bothered to carry a book around with them all the time. Looking forward to more books in future updates and I'd love to see bigger book covers if they're all of the same high standard.
Great Interface
stollcri 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I really enjoy reading page by page, it is much easier to read long texts with this paradygm. I have found that scrolling through long texts requires more mental work as I have to continually locate my position. And, that is fine for slow reading technical material, but it takes away from the enjoyment of reading for pleasure. This application makes it enjoyable to read books on the iPhone. I know that the name of the application is Classics, but it would be nice to have modern titles available. In general, it would be nice to have more available titles.
Stunning
oracle_ab 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app leaves you breathless at the sheer beauty and excellence the developers have shown in preserving and exquisitively presenting great classic literary works! Any and all other ereaders should take note: Classis has set the bar, and I dare say the ceiling, too. I simply melt waiting to see more great pieces added, and would love to see the developers expand their collective creativity and love for written works in a similar app for non-classics. They definitely will keep my support!
AWESOME

I'm not even going to mention being first, this application is that cool! This is something I've really wanted since the app store came out. This will really help during those boring times, and well worth the price. 12 books for 25 cents apiece is a great deal, even more so when you factor in that they are going to release more books in the future. Get this now! And for the creators I beg you for some George Orwell in the 1st patch. "1984" and "Animal Farm" especially. Thank you!
Truly awesome!!

There are a lot of useless apps in the App Store -- this is not one of them! Definitely the best text reader I have come across so far. The ability to enter notes would be a great feature, but I don't think being able to add your own books would work very well. Can't wait to see how this app develops!!
Outstanding
jamesnotjim 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Classics has quickly become one of my favorite applications on my iPod touch. There are eBook readers out there that offer endless customizability and the ability to upload your own texts. But that's not what Classics is about. What Classics does is delivers its limited selection of literary works to the screen with a loving attention to detail that makes even a books-are-made-of-paper snob like myself look forward to reading on the iPod. Though a very simple but very clever interface, Classics brings the experience of book reading to the iPod with panache.
Really Nice
Gigfy 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Responding to the review that it is garbage and has only 9 books - yes it has been slow to add new books but I have 14 now and just had one added in the last few days (Pride and Prejudice Yay!) - so the person who only has only 9 must not be updating their apps - it is worth the money and hopefully books will now be coming more frequently.
Excellent stuff...

... but dropping the price after harnessing the early adopters is not good policy!
One of very few worthwhile apps.
gogocosmonaut 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of the very few worthwhile apps found in the App Store. The key ingredients are clever design and devs that care. The app itself is beautiful yet highly functional, clean, and uncluttered. It's easy to use and the design cues add to this; for example, the page flip makes it feel like a real book and the page and font color are easy on the eyes. You can easily organize the books by putting them in the order you want, and the covers are gorgeous. The book selection is good, and free updates will always add more books as they're formatted. All in all, one of my favorite apps that I've found thus-far.
perfect
askthedust 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
just finished reading the first chapter of the Time Machine. Easy to navigate and visually rank banks on shelf. Words are good size to read on screen. Only small drawback I found is that while it does bookmark the spot you exited the book if you take a call or go back to the main screen while in the middle of the book you will have to start on the bookshelf, select your book to get back to you book mark. Would be nicer to just return to the screen where you left it like in Mail. But not enough for me to lower the rating or enjoyment of this nice little app. Looking forward to more books. Steinbeck, Bukowski and Saroyan next please.
Good start, but lacks basic features
dfrobins 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great visually, but lacks basic features seen in other freely available readers. - adjustable font size - landscape reading mode - full screen reading - ability to download books - categorize by genre (will become more important as additional books are added) - MORE BOOKS!!! Good start, but not worth the $3 in it's current form. Seems like a beta version that should have been released for free in its current state of development.
Awesome awesome awesome!!!!!!!
Luketheduke2000apple 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Take advantage of this amazing deal!! Worth probably over $50 worth of books! But please add more books! This is no complaint; it's just a suggestion. The killer app is already phenomenal as it is now!!! Some more book suggestions: -Red Badge of Courage -Some more Sherlock Holmes -maybe a Hardy Boy or two -Rascal -Kidnapped -Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde -A Tale of two Cities And more! Thank you for this inexpensive, amazing app!!! :D 
The Future
WhySoSerious? 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
While I hate to say it, because I am a fan of paper books, electronic books are probably the future, and this is a great app to set Apple on that path. It is fluid and easy to read, and the whole bookmark thing is great. It also offers some great novels that I can now read on the go, right on my cell phone! This is a great start to a great app, and there is tons of room for improvement, particularly in adding more novels. Obviously, we're limited to what we can have on here, due to copyright stuff, but eventually who knows where something like this could go. Maybe we will start paying .99 cents for a book on our phone, much like the Amazon Kindle. I can't wait to see where this app ends up.
Suggestionsss

Could it be possible to add the odyssey since you already have the illiad that would be awesome
Great App! NEEDS DELETE ABILITY!
mrBrooks 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
NEEDS ABILITY TO LET YOU DELETE BOOKS YOU DON'T WANT!
All are free for iPhone already!
b-manny 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Download Stanza from the app store FOR FREE and you can download and read all of the novels and many more FOR FREE! Shame on these developers for trying to make am easy buck
Selling books outside the app
JohnnySaver 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
The company decided to sell the separate books for a fee each. That is contra to what they said at the beginning, that they will keep adding books on a regular basis. They should sell the books to the people who bought the app thinking they will get regular added books to the classic app, when they have been transposing many books and selling them for 1.99 each under Ubiklabs, I feel betrayed.
