Codea-created app arrives on the App Store
Calendar16 Wed, 25 Apr 2012 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
I've been slowly wading into App Store development recently, and while I've found Apple to be extremely supportive developers on the Mac, it hasn't released any development tools for iOS ("Xcode for iPad" is one of those mythical creatures that developers will tell you they want only after a couple rounds of drinks). This realization drew me to Codify, now named Codea, an iPad app that allows developers to write and even run XML code on the iPad. Unfortunately, the biggest drawback with Codea was that you couldn't run that code anywhere else. The best you could do was copy the code out and then put it into some other development environment. But that gap is being narrowed. The developers of Codea have released an App Store game called Cargo-Bot, which is a title fully developed inside the Codea app on the iPad. The app is free, and it's just a Read More
Meet Cargo-Bot, the first app created entirely on the iPad
Calendar16 Mon, 23 Apr 2012 19:58:38 UTC +00:00
In case you’re still not convinced that the iPad is just as capable of creating content as it is consuming it, check this out. A new puzzle-based iPad game just hit the App Store and is being advertised as the first app created entirely on Apple’s tablet. Using Codea, an iPad app described as the “GarageBand of coding software,” development firm Two Lives Left created Cargo-Bot. The feature-rich puzzle game includes over 36 puzzles, YouTube solution recording, and stunning Retina graphics… Even though the app itself is great, the real story here is the fact that the title was created completely – brainstormed, prototyped, programmed and polished – on the iPad. It was originally created by Codea user Rui Viana, and then polished and published by Codea creators Two lives Left. It’s worth noting that unlike previous iOS-based app-creation software we’ve covered, Codea requires extensive programming knowledge. So you might want Read More

2011 Best App Ever winners announced
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Jan 2012 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Jeff Scott of 148 Apps has announced the winners for the Best App Ever for 2011, and you can review at the official site right now. Jetpack Joyride from Halfbrick was the overall winner in the iOS devision (which is a great app, but probably also benefited from actually promoting the Best App Ever vote inside the app itself). There are several other winners across various categories like Most Innovative (Codea), Most Useful (Amazon Mobile) and Best Time Killer (Tiny Wings). Scott tells us that 148 Apps received a record 1.5 million votes this year, which is three times the total of last year's choices. Before voting began, there were 287,643 nominations across 7,243 apps. This year also featured Android winners in many categories, but Scott says that iOS topped the Android votes by a factor of 10:1. The Best App Ever awards are always an excellent check of what's available Read More
TUAW Best of 2011 wrap-up and editor picks
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Jan 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Without further ado, here's the full list of winners as well as our picks for the TUAW Best of 2011: Editor picks: 13" and 11" MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro Peripheral Read More
Codify Brings Entry-Level Coding to iPad Users
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Nov 2011 14:30:37 UTC +00:00
By Carter Dotson on November 2nd, 2011 Codify is an app for budding programmers looking to experiment with Lua. Developer Two Lives Left (no relation to Tilt to Live developer One Man Left) has introduced an iPad app for those budding programmers out there. Codify is an app that is based on the Lua programming language, and is designed for users to be able to easily set up and use projects on their iPad. This is not meant to be a compiler for large-scale projects, nor is it meant to be a Lua compiler for iPad, as projects are currently limited to the iPad alone. However, it provides an introduction to programming, with visual tools that can be used to help make a simple project easily. The app comes with sample projects to explore, sample graphics to use in projects, and the ability to intelligently interact with code in ways that Read More
Daily iPad App: Codify
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Nov 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
I've been diving into some rudimentary (very rudimentary, trust me) iOS coding lately, and as soon as I picked up an iPad, one of the first thoughts that occurred to me was the idea of having a version of Xcode (the IDE that Mac and iOS developers use to make their apps) available for the platform. There are plenty of text editors available, and even some designed to actually write code on Apple's tablet. But I haven't seen a way to actually run that code -- until now, that is, with Codify. To be clear, Codify isn't a Cocoa development tool like Xcode, so you still can't write and run iOS apps right on the device (though I have to believe Apple is indeed working on some sort of Xcode for iPad, somewhere in the bowels of Cupertino, right?). But it is a development environment for Lua, a lightweight and simple Read More

Codify lets you build iPad apps on your iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Oct 2011 04:00:28 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Friday, Oct 28, 2011 | Codify is an iPad app that lets you create iPad apps. It’s no typical code editor, however; Codify takes advantage of the iPad’s multitouch and let’s you manipulate your code by tapping numbers, colors, and images to adjust them. There is one little issue with Codify – you cannot import or export code which means that your creations will be restricted to just the app. Despite this, Codify looks like a fantastic simulator, and even if you don’t know how to code, I recommend checking out the video below. Seeing the app in action is pretty interesting. We think Codify is the most beautiful code editor you’ll use, and it’s easy. Codify is designed to let you touch your code. Want to change a number? Just tap and drag it. How about a color, or an image? Tapping will bring up visual editors Read More

Who Says the iPad Isn't For Programming? Meet Codify
Calendar16 Thu, 27 Oct 2011 16:15:00 UTC +00:00
Tablets like the iPad are ideal for certain activities, but programming is not typically among them. Much like writing text, you can write code on the iPad, but it's more cumbersome without an external keyboard and you'll probably need to port your draft over to the desktop for it to be truly useful. We don't expect to see developers ditch their laptops anytime soon, but a new breed of apps for the iPad help make the device more coding-friendly. One of them is Codify, which went live yesterday. It lets you build simple games and simulations using a combination of hand-coding and touch-based visual programming. Coming from the game development shop TwoLivesLeft, Codify uses the lightweight Lua scripting language to build games that make the most of the iPad and iOS. Thus, creating games that utilize the accelerometer and multitouch gestures on the iPad. During development, you can tap certain properties Read More

'Codify' Brings Touch Based Programming to iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 27 Oct 2011 02:37:35 UTC +00:00
iOS developers TwoLivesLeft have just released an interesting new app called Codify, which brings touch based programming to the iPad. The app allows users to create their own programs using the Lua programming language by typing code directly on your iPad. Also included are various assets and programming examples to be used in your creations: I've heard more than a few developers attempting to create similar tools for the iPad, but all of them have hit various roadblocks in the Apple approval process because they all (in one way or another) allowed you to get code and assets onto the device and execute it. Codify sidesteps this by coming with a wide variety of assets, but unfortunately all of your creations will be trapped on your own device. Due to the limited nature of the environment, the tool is mostly useful for experimentation and prototyping, as you won't be able to Read More
Codify: “Touch your Code”
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Oct 2011 04:59:02 UTC +00:00
Read More
