By Andrew Wray, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 | Wondering how to take better pictures with your iPhone camera? Ever found yourself taking a picture with your iPhone only to discover the photo came out less than perfect? Sometimes you only have one opportunity to capture a moment, so you want to ensure everything is right and your photo doesn’t come out looking like it was taken with a cheap and flimsy digital camera. The iPhone camera has come a long way since the original iPhone in 2007, currently sporting a 5 megapixel sensor with flash in the iPhone 4, but there are still a few things you can do to make sure you’re getting the best shot possible. In this tip we’ll go over a few pointers to help you in taking better pictures with your iPhone — find out how after the break! I’ve been in situations where I’ve had Read More
by iPhotography isn’t just about the iPhone; it’s as much about the apps, too. We’re taking a closer look at some of the most popular iPhotography apps from the viewpoint of the developers, showcasing great photos created with some great apps. Color Splash [iTunes link] is one such popular app. Since its release in February 2009, Color Splash has continually been among the top 10 best-selling iPhone photography apps in the U.S. It has consistently been in the top 100 best selling apps for most of that time as well. Further, it was selected by Apple as one of just 50 apps to grace its App Store Hall of Fame [iTunes link]. We got in touch with developer Hendrik Kueck, the founder of the company behind the app, Pocket Pixels, to talk all things Color Splash and discuss the work that’s been created with it. “As a developer you always think Read More

TiPb Picks of the Week
Calendar16 Sun, 27 Feb 2011 23:52:28 UTC +00:00
By Leanna Lofte, Sunday, Feb 27, 2011 | Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Ally: I tend to lean towards games that have a simple concept but keep you entertained for hours. Tiny Wings fits right into that category. It has beautiful graphics and backgrounds but the controls and game play are dead simple. You are a bird and you have one dream, to fly. But your wings are tiny. You use the hills in order to make your bird propel himself high into the sky. You’ll tap and Read More

As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Nothing better for Valentine’s Day than a sappy chick flick. Unless it’s an action adventure movie with Vin Diesel, Johnny Depp, or Matt Damon…you get the idea. And how better to watch whichever movie you choose, than streaming over Netflix? Your Netflix subscription allows you to sign into the iOS app, and view tons of classic movies on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. And while the choice of current movies isn’t exactly extensive, there’s Read More
Have Some Halloween Photo Fun with Your iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Oct 2010 17:00:49 UTC +00:00
Want to add some social mobile fun to this Halloween? How about taking some of the snapshots you’re taking with your iPhone or iPod touch, and turning them into cartoon avatars for Facebook and Twitter? The process is easy, and all you need are a few apps. Once you have your photo, perform all of the necessary cropping and color adjustments in one of the many image editors available.  For this step in the process I’ve always used Photogene (iTunes link, $1.99). Photoshop Express is a good free alternative.  In Photogene, I auto adjust the colors and utilize a filter to sharpen the image.  This  sharpening helps out when the photo is converted into a drawing. I then crop the image, depending on what I want to use it for. If I’m creating an avatar for IM apps, I will typically use a 1:1 ration when cropping. If you just want this Read More
I rarely take photos with my phone because I am a lousy enough photographer with a real camera. The various app markets brim with software to help people like me. But I recently stumbled onto something far more useful: apps that take your lousy shots and help you turn them into something ridiculous, bizarre or maybe even beautiful. The short list includes, for Apple users, ToonPaint ($2), SketchMee ($3 for iPhones, $5 for iPads), Unicorn Shots ($1) and Color Splash ($2). For Android are free apps like PicSay and Pic Paint. On BlackBerry, Picture Magic ($5), Doodle ($1) and PhotoColor ($3) are worth a look. As is almost always the case, there are more, and better, apps in this category for iPhone users than for those with Android or BlackBerry devices. For people who are contemplating their next phone, the broader issue here may be worth quickly noting. IPhone app developers Read More

Review: ColorBlast! for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Aug 2010 18:33:37 UTC +00:00
image taken with permission from The Travelling Isle travel blog ColorBlast! is a selective colour painting app developed by two ex-Adobe engineers, but don ‘t worry: this isn ‘t one of those cases where the developers’ name dropping is the most exciting thing behind the app. ColorBlast! really can work like magic, and it’s hands-down the easiest ways to create a dramatic grey scale image with a punch of colour right on your iPhone. [I Am Canadian: you may notice that I spell 'color ' with a 'u ' in this article, but still spell the app as 'ColorBlast! '. These are not typos or inconsistencies, I am just Canadian.] Selective Colouring Before I expound on the magic of ColorBlasting (which is very different from Bear Blasting, by the way), it ‘s probably important for me to mention what the process is like in other iPhone apps. Color Splash
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Jul 2010 23:20:30 UTC +00:00
The iPhone has been offered quite a few different photo editing apps from the App Store. Just looking through the online store, you will find apps for pretty much any effect you would like to accomplish. The iPad, however, hasn\'t been as blessed with apps for photos. Don\'t get me wrong, there have been a few apps for the iPad but the development has been slow. Color Splash is an app that originally debuted on the iPhone and has now made it\'s way over to the iPad. The app has one extremely simple fuction that it does very well. Users can take a photo from their library and import it into the app. Once in, the photo then immediately turns black and white so users can begin adding color to them. The whole idea behind this app is that photos look cool if you only have your subject in color and Read More

What's on your iPhone, Steve Sande?
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Apr 2010 16:30:00 UTC +00:00
is a new TUAW series that we'll run occasionally so you can see what the bloggers at your favorite Apple site are running on their pocket devices. This was suggested by one of our readers, who wanted to know just what kind of stuff we had on our iPhones. Since we're a group of individuals who all think a bit differently, it makes a lot of sense to have each of the bloggers in turn write up a short blurb on their favorite apps. In this post I'll list those apps that deserve special attention, but to see all of the apps that I currently have on my iPhone 3GS, you'll need to take a look at the gallery at the end of the post. To start with, you'll find that I have a lot of camera apps. In nearly three years, I've used my iPhones to take literally thousands of Read More

10 Great iPhone Camera Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 23 Mar 2010 15:34:28 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/23/2010 at 7:34am | by Jason Whong By now, you've probably launched the Camera app and taken a few pictures. Maybe you've even shared these pictures with other people. Though the built-in camera doesn't do everything your point-and-shoot does, and it will never have the optical abilities of a DSLR, it has a major advantage over dedicated cameras: the iPhone OS lets you install apps that take your pictures and video to another level. Here are 10 great apps that let you create, modify and share your images. You probably don't need all ten, as there's some feature overlap among these apps. Try a few of these to see if your creative mind enjoys using a variety of tools. CameraBagPublisher: Nevercenter Ltd. Color Magic Deluxe Is Available For Free Today
Calendar16 Mon, 22 Mar 2010 19:25:44 UTC +00:00
Have you always wanted to try an iPhone photography app like Color Splash but couldn’t justify paying for it?  Well, Rockifone has the perfect solution for you.  Today and today only the company’s Color Splash-like photo app, Color Magic Deluxe, is available for free. Color Magic Deluxe helps you add a little zing to any photo by allowing you to highlight specific areas with color while leaving the rest black and white. The app allows you to take a new photo or import an existing one and then it turns it completely black and white.  You can add color to certain areas by first selecting 1 of 11 brush types, choosing its pixel size, transparency, and then allowing you to just go at it by dragging your finger across the screen.  You can zoom in on areas using the usual pinch and pull mechanic, and an alternate view mode highlights your Read More

In case you haven't noticed, I'm a fan of iPhone photography apps. I've written about Best Camera, played with ColorSplash, and taken panoramic photos with Pano. When I noticed the $1.99US Lo-Mob [iTunes Link] while doing my weekly pass through the photo apps, I decided to buy it and give it a try. Part of my fascination with iPhone photo apps is that the flexibility of the software combines with the camera that is always at your fingertips, and you can do things with your photos with a few taps that would have taken hours in a darkroom. Lo-Mob provides 33 different effects that give your iPhone pics the look of taking photos with old film, instant film, 35 mm film in a medium-format camera, and more. With many of the effects, changes with saturation, focus, and tint are mixed with artifacts (dust on the frame, for example), vignetting, and frames. Read More
Apple has just published ‘iTunes Rewind 2009′ [link] , a page in iTunes that takes a look at some of the most popular items downloaded from the iTunes online store this year. The lists include movies, TV shows, audiobooks, podcasts, and of course, iPhone applications from the App Store. Apps are listed as top rated and top sellers, and include Real Racing [App Store, $4.99], Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor [App Store, $2.99], ColorSplash [App Store, $1.99] and ReelDirector [App Store, $4.99]. Where to begin? Apps were the success story of 2009 as one of the most exciting developments on iTunes. In early 2008, we were happy just to get email on our phone. Now, we’re playing multiplayer championship racing with Real Racing, editing films with ReelDirector, manipulating photos with Colorsplash, or getting completely lost in the touch screen wonder that is Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor. ColorSplash On Sale For The First Time Ever
Calendar16 Mon, 23 Nov 2009 22:20:57 UTC +00:00
ColorSplash is an amazingly simple photo editing app that has been available in the App Store since February of this year, and unlike almost every other iPhone app, ColorSplash has never been on sale. Pocket Pixels must be in the holiday spirit, however, because ColorSplash is now 50 percent off for the entire week. ColorSplash gives you the ability to add a little extra zing to your sometimes dull photos by converting them to black and white and then allowing you to add color back to areas of your choice.  To accomplish this feat, simply import an existing photo from your camera roll or take a new one.  Then you can pick from one of the four brush styles and start painting with the tip of your finger.  The app allows you to zoom in on areas to work on details, and it even features an alternative view mode that highlights Read More

How To: Edit Your Photos Using Multiple Apps On The iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Oct 2009 12:00:44 UTC +00:00
There are so many photography apps in the App Store and yet, there is no one app that could replace them all. Why not use multiple apps for that one special photo you want to enhance and send off in an email or Facebook? There is one simple trick that is standard across most photography programs and that is Save and Load from your iPhones camera roll. This allows you to do things like crop your picture with PhotoGene and add a Helga effect to the same photo with CameraBag. Let’s take a look at how you might edit one photo with multiple apps! To edit this particular photo, we will use the following apps: ColorSplash, CameraBag, and PhotoGene Step 1: Find a photo in your Camera Roll you want to enhance or take a picture with the iPhones camera. Step 2: Load the image in PhotoGene and apply a few Read More
Discovering the iArt: Inspiration and Applications
Calendar16 Mon, 19 Oct 2009 15:22:07 UTC +00:00
By –   It‚Äôs amazing to notice how iPhone gives birth to a new breed of artists ‚Äì those who never miss a moment worth capturing in the photo or painting. Many professional painters, designers and photographers recognized the iPhone and iPod Touch as the new age art mediums, and have become evangelists of the iArt. What is the secret of such a great popularity? The well-known photographer Chase Jarvis formulated the answer quite well in the title of his new published book “The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You” (he only used an iPhone for this photo book). In other words, people enjoy the possibility to implement their creative ideas on the go, and to be ready when spontaneous inspiration catches them. Just add a few specialized applications to your device and get a portable art or photography studio in your pocket — so what are YOU waiting Read More
Weekly App Store Picks: September 12, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 12 Sep 2009 16:00:37 UTC +00:00
The Beatles may not have arrived in the iTunes Music Store just yet, but it’s not all disappointing news: the App Store has been updated with a new look and a stack of new iPhone apps have been released. As ever, here are my picks from the latest additions. My top pick for this week is Hitchcock, plus I’ve also checked out Newsstand, Blades of Fury and Rhapsody. Hitchcock ($19.99) There’s a fantastic range of apps on offer to budding iPhone-based photographers at the moment. Tools such as QuadCamera and ColorSplash make for fun and effective photo-enhancing toys, and, once you’re done touching up your latest masterpiece, you can share your photography on Flickr via their official app. For folk who want to take their photography a step further and start dabbling in film, Hitchcock has arrived. Don’t let the messy interface fool you, this is a powerful app that’s packed Read More

Love It, but there's a problem :(
Missyc77 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I absolutely love this app! Perfect idea and super easy to use. Look forward to seeing more apps from you! Update: I had to give this 4 stars because I just realized that the application saves the photos at lower resolutions. If u fix this, I will give 5 stars. I want to me able to print them and at the low resolution I can't.
Fantastic!
rixmb 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Another tremendous job by the developer of Juxtaposer! Hendrick Kueck's intuitive use of the iPhone interface is probably the best of any applications in the app store. I'm having fun selectively coloring my photos.
Great App but has its flaws and inconveniences
Viet[Azn] 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The App itself is a very useful and wonderful picture editing program. It's very intuitive and easy to use although the Help process didn't help to explain how to edit the photos very well. I had to mess around with it for a good 5 minutes before I figured out how to use it.
Totally Worth It!!!!

So much fun!!
Cece greendayfan 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I love this app! It helps me bring a special spark to all of my favorite pictures. I had several pictures that I took at the zoo on a school trip that were really nice, but hard to see. The animals blended in with the backgrounds too much. I used this app to make the backgrounds black and white, and the animals popped right off the screen!! I love it! =]

Ajay Das 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
It says exactly as said. I have spent many a hours playing around with snaps. Did notice one problem. The picture quality is fine if I select one clicked right through iPhone. However, if I import a snap and them work on it, the quality is not as good. It comes blurry. Hope this problem is taken care off in future

I have been doing this for 17 years as a pro photographer. First with tints and a brush, then when digital age came into view, I used photoshop and other like programs. The first would take days, the other took hours, this app only takes minutes. Thanks, do you have an app that works with Vista.
