iPhone dev to make an app in one week -- live on the web
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Feb 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
It sounds like the premise for a new reality show -- a developer writes an iPhone app in one week while the world watches. That's exactly what Sahil Lavingia is planning to do starting on Sunday, February 7th. Lavingia is the developer behind Color Stream and the Twizzle Twitter client [iTunes Links], and he'll be posting updates to keep us all apprised of his progress at his One Week App blog. On the blog, Lavingia will be posting screenshots of his coding, timelapse movies (sorry, no streaming video of Lavingia at work), and other notes about his work as he moves forward. Lavingia is a realist -- he knows that he could create an amazing new app, or he could fail to finish his work in the allotted time. We don't know what he's planning on coding, either. Perhaps it will be a game, maybe a design tool, or something else Read More

Must-Have
Aadi123 5.0 stars Version: 1
As well as being absolutely gorgeous, this app is highly useful. This app pays for itself in seconds - just wait until you show your clients. A must-have in my books.
Truly, TRULY amazing.
Raphyy 5.0 stars Version: 1
The sheer ability that this app has to automatically generate palettes out of a picture you took or select makes this app worth a lot more. My clients love the fact that I can quickly generate matching palettes on the fly without wasting their time. Get it now, you won't regret it.
A wonderful addition to my collection of designer apps.

This is definitely an app that goes on my "designer" page. It's beautiful and very useful. Imagine the surprise when a client says "I want that color changed to the color of... this table" and I pull out my iPhone to snap a picture and show her instantly. "Like this?" And that's just one of the wonderful experiences I've gotten using this app. If you're a designer (or someone into home decore), it's a must buy.

Handy little app!
Kind of perfect
d/r 5.0 stars Version: 1
An excellent inspiration tool to have available everywhere you go. I really appreciate the CMYK sliders vs the RGB in other apps (my mind works in CMYK).
Amazing app!
Bradenwh 5.0 stars Version: 1
This app is amazing! A beautiful UI coupled with amazing functionality makes this app a perfect addition to any iPhone or iPod touch. The ability to make a color palette out of a photo on your iPhone is perfect. I can't brag enough on the UI. It's perfect. Great app. Definitely recommend.
Fun AND useful!
Arxos 5.0 stars Version: 1
Since I've gotten this app a few hours ago, I've spent a ton of time on it. Not doing work mind you, but just messing around with the sliders and saving them to my photo library. Great app!
Very well done, super useful

Color Stream is well thought out and a joy to use. If you design stuff, color palettes are very important to you. For $3, I can't imagine a better tool for your toolbox. Get it, use it, love it.
Fun, highly useful, and gorgeous!
egordin 5.0 stars Version: 1
Color Stream is one of those apps which takes a simple concept and executes it very well. The application is easy to use, and allows users to export their swatches in a variety of different ways (email, photo album, etc).
Great app!
Kevinm78 5.0 stars Version: 1
Being a designer I have bought and used most of the color apps available. This is the best. It is also an elegantly designed application. A pleasure to look at and use. It is one of those apps that you show off to friends who are considering buying an iPhone. I did a search to see if the developer had created other applications. I hope he creates more apps soon. He's very talented.
Brilliant and Beautiful
NateBrax 5.0 stars Version: 1
Color Stream is simple enough and fast enough to use for my day to day design work, but that also means I find myself creating palettes just for fun. Such a great way to stock pile inspirational palettes. Including the hex codes when you email a palette is genius.
Pretty good but lacking some features.
The Abominable Cellist 4.0 stars Version: 1
It's a really good app but there are some functional problems I'd like to point out: -Cannot email palettes on 3g, only wifi -Cannot delete palettes -No color map (ie, square with variants on one hue with hue, value, and saturation sliders, like in colourlovers) -No copyable HEX/ can't paste in HEX
stunning design. major oversights.
behind the mask 2.0 stars Version: 1
this is a gorgeous, gorgeous app that's fun to use, albeit with several, baffling limitatons. it has the dubious distinction of being one of the most beautiful apps in the store, while also suffering from a number of glaring omissions: • the flickr search and email feature are wi-fi only; no 3G. (but why? this doesn't make sense.) • there's absoultely *no* documentation in the app (nor in the app store's description) to inform us that those features are wi-fi only. (and because of that, i wasted 10 minutes trying to get the above features to work on 3G.) • there are "save" buttons on two, different pages, and they're constantly enabled (blue), even after you've just saved! after saving, the save button(s) should be grayed out until the pallette's modified again. i find myself constantly hitting save, because there's no visual indicator that a pallette has not been modified since it was last saved. • there's no undo. (how about shake to undo? and multiple levels of it?) if you like a pallette, but want to experiment with it, you have to first memorize/write down/take a screenshot of the current color-values, because once you touch one of those sliders, there's no other way to get back. • there's no easy way to find basic colors. while showing the app to a friend, i offered to create a pallette for him. he'd call out a color, and i had a lot of trial-and-error with the sliders, trying to find his specific color. eventually, i suppose one begins to learn the "recipes" for various colors. but for nonprofessionals, that's a lot of work. a simple grid of common colors -- just as starting points -- would be extremely helpful. • you can't change the order of pallettes. • you can't change the order of colors within a pallette. (why not tap and drag a color to swap it with other colors? • when generating a pallette from a photo, it would be nice to have a "reload" button to force color stream to look for different colors. it would also be nice to be able to tap and "lock" any of the 5, found colors that we like, so that only the others are replaced when tapping "reload." • the "info" button (a circle containing a letter "i") is the incorrect button for the purpose it serves. we're not getting information on a pallette; we're performing actions. instead, it should be the little "gear" icon -- to indicate "settings" and "actions." i hope these issues will be addressed in an update, very soon.

Great concept! Very useful.

I love it. It is so nice to have a portable color picker on my iPhone. It seems very intuitive to me.
Seems useful
royalsmartperson 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Seems ok. Quite a few other apps already have the same functionality. Would really benefit from kuler integration in my opinion, which would place it above the others. Though I'm starting to wonder if I'm in a minority using kuler in my workflow.
Great Ap. Swipe Left to Delete a Palette
TeamMedich 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Really fun to use to explore color combinations. To the reviewer who said you can't delete saved palettes, you can do so by swiping to the left on the palette when all the palettes are listed together.
Great app, just squash a few bugs
Someone who likes B&N 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Pros: Great offline color app for designers. You can save palettes from photos or make your own. Easy import to library for email or xfer later. Cons: A few crash bugs. Occasionally misses the major color focus in a picture. One note: Touching the numbers on the sliders does bring up the num pad to change the value by hand, but this is broken. The "save" button changes to "done", implying that you must touch "done" to remove the num pad. The "done" button never changed back to "save" when you hit it and you wind up losing changes. Found this bug on ios 4 on 3GS.

this icon is ugly! Design a new icon for this beautiful tool :)
Amazingly fun!
mimojito 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great app! Beautiful icon and well thought out creatively. Great user interface … very intuitive and easy to navigate. My only concern is the use of the info "i" when naming your new pallet. Two thumbs way up!!
Great tool for making palettes from photos, etc.
k_m_s 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is a useful tool for designers. Many apps try to capture a palette from a photo and fail to accurately sample the colors. I have found Color Stream to be quite accurate, but also flexible enough to let you experiment to your hearts content. If you are patient, you can generate great palettes from photos you take, or ones in your roll. I also like that it doesn't litter your camera roll with photos (although saving photos would be a good option).
Great App
ShiNiGaMi727 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Excellent app for on the go color scheme ideas. Very easy to email yourself or others your created palettes. Only problem I've run into is when creating a palette from scratch it fails to save the palette. Still, you cant beat the price on this one if you are a designer and like to come up with color schemes anytime you want.
Good but....
ctyankee 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
No way to enter hex values manually. You have to use the touchy sliders and hope you didn't have too Much caffeine.
