ComicZeal, my iOS comic reader of choice, got itself updated in a big way earlier this week. The new version features a completely revamped UI with a greater focus on visuals (beautiful list and grid views), quickly organizing contents (a new slider system), and the ability to differentiate between western comics and manga. The new slider system in particular deserves some extra attention. Instead of the classic iOS multi-selection system (present in apps like Mail and Photos) that requires you to enter an Edit mode, tap on titles, and then proceed with an action, the Comic Zeal slider functions more like shifting items from one hand to the other. Comic Express is the latest app from Not A Basement Studio, the developer that brought us the excellent Manga Rock set of applications. However, Comic Express doesn’t feel like it hits quite the same sweet spot as Manga Rock did. There are already several great comic readers on the App Store, and I’m not convinced that this one really brings anything new or significant to the overall picture. Oft nachgefragt: ein Beitrags-Update über meine ‘Homescreens‘. Seit März 2011, als die letzte Aktualisierung dieser Artikel-Serie erfolgte, hat sich die eine oder andere App verschoben, geändert und aussortiert. Der derzeit aktuellen Stand ist an dieser Stelle festgehalten. Vielleicht finden an diesem Montag ja speziell frische 4S-Käufer, die einen ersten Grundbedarf an Software benötigen, die eine oder andere Anregung. Ich persönlich ziehe jede individuelle Empfehlungen allen generischen ‘Hitlisten’ vor. In unregelmäßigen Abständen halte ich an dieser Stelle meine ersten beiden Homescreen-Seiten vom iPhone fest. Zuletzt erfolgte dies im August 2010, Januar 2010 sowie September 2009. Für mich von Spannung ist dabei welche Apps sich immer noch auf meinem Geräte befinden, welche komplett verschwanden oder sich eventuell (nur) verschoben haben. Mit diesem Thema habe ich mich in den letzten 24 Stunden noch überhaupt nicht beschäftigt. Meine Aufmerksamkeit galt der “gedruckten Unterhaltung”. Entgegen der iPhone-Version ist der RSS-Reader NetNewsWire (7.99 €; App Store-Link) eine erste sehr gelungene Umsetzung, um seine Feeds auf das schlanke Apple-Gerät zu befördern. Bis zu 10.000 ungelesene Beiträge empfängt das Programm vom Google Reader-Account und navigiert schnell durch die Informationsflut. Great comic book reader, but...

...for 8 extra bucks I am going to nitpick. Why is the collections window so small for the ipad, and why the vanilla backgrounds? Would be very nice if we could customize the look. The conversion through Itunes is amazingly slow for rotating large collections. Also, I just don't understand why the ipad version doesn't reopen to my last read comic. The iphone app, if you closed it mid-comic, would return to the page you were reading after starting it back up. Its a feature I never thought about until it was gone (or at least it's gone for me.) There seems to be a tab called "recent" but thats not as quick ot the draw as the old way and seemms to get clutttered. Maybe I'm missing something here? Still a 5 star app though, nonetheless.

When I first saw the iPad, I thought it would make an excellent comic book reading device. And when I saw this app announced, I knew I had to get it. I finally got sync working reliably, but importing comics directly is making things a lot easier during sync. I will be trying it once I'm done reading the story arcs/crossover events I just finished putting onto my iPad. My only wish is that when I select a comic from a box, and get done reading it and return to the list, the box I was reading comics from would open up automatically. Right now it just goes back to the beginning. Same when the app starts. I wish it would go to the last viewed page on startup.

Finally I can read full resolution CBZ and CBR files and import them straight through itunes. Works smoothly for me too (which isnt the case with all of the itunes file sharing apps.) As an artist myself I like to be able to zoom in and really see the images without the downscaling of the iphone version The program UI needs some work though. It should open to a view of the collection similar to iBooks rather than just a blank page with some small icons on the top or possibly open to the last read book and page. The page buttons could be adjusted for the scale of the new screen as well. We've got lots more space now so lets use it. Overall its an excellent and useful update.

I got an ipad for the comics. The first thing I did was to load up some 2000ad's I got from clickwheel. These are in CBR format so I figured they'd be a good test. I had to use comic zeal sync which compressed the images. This made the text on a couple of the pages unreadable as they got too compressed. Backing up after the first sync also took a while and I'm just gonna go ahead and blame this app. I don't think theres a way to read 2 pages at once if there is I couldn't find it. Swipe to change pages is a bit of a pain.

Finally, no more WiFi transfers!

Thank god the days of trying and failing to transfer comics over WiFi are over, simply import them using iTunes and you are all set. The downside is that once the transfer is done they have to be converted which takes a little time. Considering that the iPad just launched, the team has been very quick with updates and this program will continue to improve. If you enjoy reading comics on the iPad you will love this program, I have it both for the iPhone and iPad and the improvements in the iPad are very impressive!

I bought this app on launch day. I had lots of trouble getting the app to sync my comics. I emailed the developer who could not have been more helpful! He told me what had happened and that an update was on the way. Sure enough, a few days later here it is! Now, I carry hundreds of comics with me everywhere I go. Great job and what great support for a truly must have app!!! Thank you developer. Nice to see the great support.

With the 4.0.4 update putting comics onto the iPad is fast & easy via iTunes, no more need to use the separate sync app! Even better the comics are now full resolution. ^_^ I've been a happy user of ComicZeal on my iPod Touch for over a year. The developer has been updating & improving the app frequently. The only thing that really wasn't right was the small screen size & resolution of the iPhone/iPod Touch, which of course the developer has no control over. I used to have to zoom & pan to read the panels, but now with this version & the iPad's larger, higher-rez screen reading comics is a Joy! If you love comics & have a collection of cbr/cbz files You need this app.

This app just became well worth the price. The new file syncing is as it should be, no more compression and no more wonky middle man. Full resolution makes this great. The bug fixes are key. I boosted to 5 because it is worth every penny and has all of the functionality you want now. I would like to see an ability to change the background, I just want a solid white or black background, but that is a minor point that is insignificant now that everything else works great. I went from 2 stars to 5 stars and from not recommended at all to highly recommended to any comic fans.

yep. Im that guy. I reviewed it before I used it. Comic Zeal is one of my favorite apps on my iphone. Its only shortcoming was a variable which was outside of the programmers hands, the screen size. After the announcement of the IPad this app was the first thing that came to my mind. How can I review it before Ive used it? Bazinga!!! I just did, didn't I? The mini version was a monster. A review of simply taking that app alone and super sizing it could warrent its review status.

so glad the images are not getting compressed anymore, tried the first transfer through itunes and got 50 issues in 4 mins or so, not bad at all. I'll give this app 5 stars once it features brightness controls and easy navigation to the next comic. Emiliano, i've posted as Cdk in your blog - great job so far, can't wait till the next version. update - after the transfer, i opened up the app and apparently there is an importing function that i have to wait through.. much slower.. i think i might use syncdocs until this is made faster

Importing files take way too long

If you are like me and own more than 10 comics this is not the app for you. The developer says 40 seconds per comic. I uploaded a little over 100 comics it's been over an hour and half and the app is still importing my comics. Don't get me wrong if you are planning to read 1 or 2 comics and sync your iPad to upload another 2 more at a time, then this is the app for you. This performance problem is a deal breaker for me, I don't have time to watch an importing screen for 2-3 hours. Until this issue is fixed this app is garbage to me. I would save your money and pass on this app until they fix it.

This is a fantastic app, but the new File Sharing functionality is pretty wonky. After trying to sync just one .cbz file, my iPad restarted without notice. And when I finally got it to sync by trying over and over, I loaded ComicZeal, and while the comic was importing, my iPad restarted again. So I'm not sure whose issue this is to fix; it may be Apple's, but for now, I can't really sync any comics. Maybe it's just my iPad or comic files. I've tried multiple comics and there's no pattern. I'll come across one that works without a hiccup and then I'll get the iPad to crash with the same comic file. I'll update my review once the app is fixed. I'm good about updating my reviews.

I am giving this five stars because it is still my favorite app for comics and everyone should have it. But I bought version 4 today to upgrade for my new iPad. But when I synced my comics to version 4 I noticed no difference at all from using the older version at 2x. I think this is because the comic zeal sync program shrinks the cbr jpegs to iPhone screen size. So whether on your iPad you blow it up twice size via the 2x if you are using the old version or via native 2x is using the version the resolution stays the same. They need to add an iPad choice to the comic zeal sync program that would only shrink the cbrs half as much.

Beta version, big problems...

This is a great "Beta" application. It works as advertised and makes reading comics fantastic, but there are major problems. iTunes syncing alone makes this iPad app worth it, but that is where the real satisfaction ends. After a usb import the iPad will take about one minute (per issue) to process. This means that transferring 20 issues would take at least 20 minutes, and that is a deal breaker. Page turning is another issue that is immediately noticeable. It takes a lot of movement to slide a page off screen to read the next page. This page turning worked fine on the iPhone, but the iPad is huge. Taping on the right side of the screen to go to the next page would be the best and easiest solution. If these two issues are fixed this would EASILY be a 5 star app! Buy this with confidence, because Bitolithic updates frequently, and this app will surely rock in the near future.

Excellent iPad reader for the iPad

This review is based on use on an iPad. ComicZeal4 is an extremely polished and professionally done comic reader. I purchased this after trying ComicReaderMobi out and was less than impressed. The one very annoying think about ComicZeal is you have to use their tool (OS X/Windows) to convert your CBZ, CBR, etc. files to a CBI format and then you have to sync these files to your iPad using the same tool. Alittle confusing and very cumbersome. Despite the annoyance of converting your comic book files and syncing using their tool, this is the way to go if you want a quality comic reading experience on your iPad, no questions asked.

I was skeptical about the syncing, as I have a lot of comics in CBR format, and the idea of converting them to a middle-man format seemed kind of strange. Still, I only got the 32gb iPad, and if I were to upload my whole 20GB CBR comic format, I wouldn't have any room for videos or photos really, so it is kind of nice to have the comics stripped down to a smaller size. It's a 4 star and not a 5 star because the file syncing is still a little unweildy, and I had to get help from an internet forum for support, rather than their site or e-mail address, which was unresponsive. NOTE: I was completely having problems with the sync, and then a commenter on gizmodo gave me a tip that I want to share: turn off bluetooth on your iPad before you sync; there is some bug that makes bluetooth potentially interrupt the file transfers. Once I turned that off, the syncing was perfect.

It was with much anticipation that I re-purchased Comic Zeal for the iPad. The sync feature is an absolute disaster. Frequent timing out issues were impossible to deal with until a very helpful reviewer here led us on to the gizmodo article citing the bluetooth incompatibility. Once that was exposed, everything went WONDERFULLY again. This really is a GREAT app despite that one little flaw. Fix the bluetooth, or better yet, make it an itunes sharing app and this is the best app the iPad has, bar none.
