Commodore 64
Calendar16 Thu, 05 Jan 2012 05:59:28 UTC +00:00
The Commodore 64 is a legendary home computer system best known for the effect it had on the then-fledgling gaming industry. Today, the Commodore 64 and its massive software library live on through emulation. One such emulator is the Commodore 64 app for the iPhone and iPod touch developed by Manomio, an innovative software studio who specialize in retro gaming for iOS and Android. In the App Store, Commodore 64 sells for $4.99. For the purposes of this review, we played it primarily on the iPad 2, but we also compared it briefly as an iPhone app on the iPhone 4S. We did not, however, try the application on the iPod touch, and we found the iPhone screen to be a little small for playback. Even these 8-bit graphics benefited greatly from the ample 2x display of the iPad. The neatest thing about the Commodore 64 app is that it’s a Read More
Arcade emulator iMAME punted out of App Store
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Dec 2011 18:55:00 UTC +00:00
Fans of vintage arcade games know that the popular and free emulation tool MAME (stands for "Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator") can be used to recreate the experience of classic coin-op and console videogames on PCs, Macs and jailbroken iOS devices. The catch, of course, is that in order to run the old games you need a copy of the game ROM code; said copies are essentially unavailable via legitimate licensing (except for a few Exidy games). The other catch is that full-scale emulators aren't particularly welcome on the iOS App Store; the ones that have made it through the review process are careful to lock down the ability to run arbitrary third-party programs. That's why it was more than a little bit surprising to see iMAME show up in the App Store this week. The game emulator (which, if you judge it by its splash screen, seems to be a straight-up Read More
Get It Before It's Gone: 'iMAME' Hits the App Store
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Dec 2011 21:12:58 UTC +00:00
Emulators have had an interesting history on the App Store, to say the least. There are a few emulator apps that have received Apple's blessing, namely Manomio's Commodore 64 [$4.99] and a choice group of similar emulators. More often than not though, they randomly appear, having slipped through the Apple approval system, then are quickly pulled. Right now we've got no clue which side of the fence iMAME [Free] is sitting on, but it's free, so there's absolutely no reason not to download it just to have it. iMame comes preloaded with nine less than stellar ROMs to play, but the real interesting part is going to be whether or not it's possible to side load other ROM files into the app. I've been tinkering around with various tricks to load other ROMs into the app that have worked in other instances of similar emulators on to the App Store, and Read More
Indie development studio Manomio, whose proud motto is "in retro we trust," first grabbed our attention last summer when their Commodore 64 for iPhone [link] emulation app was rejected by Apple, putting some of the App Store's boundaries under the spotlight. Happily, though, C64 eventually got the green light and has been warming the hearts of retro gaming enthusiasts for just over a year, now. It's beautifully executed and is a favorite here at Touch Arcade. Early this year, Manomio let us know that they had a whole lot more retro heart warming in store and shared details of their upcoming Amiga emulation system, now known as iAmiga, that would allow them to license and release various classic Amiga titles to be faithfully rendered on your iPhone screen. On hearing this we were -- readers and editors alike -- thrilled at the prospect of enjoying some of the true gaming gems Read More
Di seguito vi proponiamo il video realizzato dai ragazzi di TouchArcade nel quale vengono eseguiti 10 giochi classici come esempio: Tra i 10 giochi troviamo anche: Defender of the Crown, Battle Squadron, International Karate +, R-Type, R-Type II, Speedball, Stunt Car Racer, Shadow of the Beast, Virus, and Xenon 2: Megablast. Ancora non è stata annunciata la data di rilascio, ma penso che ci vorrà ancora del tempo, l’unica Read More

iDOS hit the Apple app store late Monday night and was gone before it even got started thanks to Apple’s on again-off again policy for App Store approvals. The DOS emulator was chock full of goodies from the early days of computing including playable versions of Ms. PacMan and Dig Dug. Once news hit the wire that the app was available, nostalgic techies descended upon the app and managed to get  Warcraft II, Space Quest, and even Windows 3.0 running on the emulator. For those dying to know, Solitaire for Windows apparently works quite well on the iPad. The emulator was a derivation of DOSbox, a popular open source DOS emulator and ran on both the iPhone and the iPad. Beautifully designed, the application featured an aging terminal with a floppy drive (remember those?), a de facto standard keyboard with coiled cable, and  a few obligatory sticky notes which were used Read More
The Little Emulator That Could: The Rise and Fall of iDOS
Calendar16 Tue, 26 Oct 2010 22:05:32 UTC +00:00
Posted 10/26/2010 at 2:05pm | by J.R. Bookwalter (Image courtesy of touchArcade) It’s a sadly familiar tale: A cool app gets approved into Apple’s App Store and less than 24 hours, it’s gone -- the victim of a mysterious approval that probably should never have been. Such is the case with iDOS, an emulator app that plenty of folks were having fun with, right up until Apple yanked the rug out from under the rest of us. touchArcade is reporting on iDOS, a nifty little 99-cent open source DOS emulator that hit the App Store on Monday night, only to be yanked from sale Tuesday afternoon. Based on DOSbox, the emulator was a universal app with PC keyboard support, mouse support and multiple screen modes -- and an awful lot of folks were having fun with it before Apple decided to rain on the parade. iDOS wasn’t the first emulator to Read More
Ever since Apple eased up their App Store approval guidelines, all kinds of crazy things have been getting released like the fabled GV Mobile+ [$2.99] and other apps that have been stuck in approval purgatory for months (or even years). Some emulators slipped through the cracks either by appeasing Apple's wishes such as Commodore 64 [$4.99] and others that were inexplicably approved, then immediately pulled like Nescaline. Late last night iDOS [99¢] was released. Based on DOSbox, an open source DOS emulator, iDOS is a universal app that has PC keyboard support, mouse support, multiple screen modes, and more. Forum member Menneisyys posted the following two screenshots of iDOS running Spellcasting 101 both on his iPad and on his 4th generation iPod touch (Yes, it even runs at Retina Display resolution.): Currently we've got a fairly active thread on our forums with people trying various games running in the emulator and Read More
'C64' v2.0 with BASIC Now Available, What's Next Details
Calendar16 Sat, 18 Sep 2010 16:37:22 UTC +00:00
Last week we reported that, thanks to Apple recently relaxing its iOS SDK agreement, Manomio submitted a major 2.0 update of Commodore 64, their C64 emulator / game system, to the App Store with BASIC reenabled (and fingers crossed). We're happy to report that the app has been approved and is now available for download [link]. I had a chat with developer Stuart Carnie yesterday, shortly after he received word from Apple that Commodore 64 v2.0 was approved, during which he shared further details concerning this notable update. With BASIC back, so too is the full C64 keyboard. Carnie is excited about the prospect of users having full and complete access to every game presented, which, in some games, can only happen when a full keyboard is available. And, while it's here in v2.0, the keyboard hasn't gotten any attention since it was removed back in November and, as such, a Read More
Update to 'C64 for iPhone' Now Available in App Store
Calendar16 Tue, 17 Aug 2010 07:56:13 UTC +00:00
Earlier this month, we detailed an update for the Commodore 64 iPhone app that developer Manomio had been busy working on for the past several months. This update would bring some much needed control optimizations both to the overall functionality of games and added flexibility for specific titles that would need more than a standard control stick and button setup. And of course, a nice selection of new downloadable titles would be included in this update as well. As of earlier today, the update has gone live in the App Store. Here is the list of features from the App Store description: I've given the update a spin and can really tell the improvement in controls across all of the games that I tried. I'm especially fond of being able to adjust the dead zone of the control stick, as that has been a point of frustration for me when playing Read More
Major 'C64 for iPhone' Update Announced, Amiga Game Update
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Aug 2010 23:27:25 UTC +00:00
Retro overlord Stuart Carnie of Manomio contacted Touch Arcade to let us know that after months of work, the C64 for iPhone v1.7 update will shortly be arriving in the App Store. This is a major update that brings numerous enhancements as well as a nice list of additional games available through the app's integrated game store. Control Improvements: Updates Fixes: Usability Improvements: 14 New Games: Stuart indicates that, despite this major update, C64 is not the studio's only focus, by any means. Their brainteaser-style game -- a NinjaDoodle license that's been played over 22 million times -- will be complete and out the door in the next few weeks, and then it's all focus on the Amiga games. We hope to have some early ad hoc builds of a few Amiga classic nicely packaged up for the iPhone in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!   #11   Today, 10:58 AM Read More
Posted 04/20/2010 at 4:34am | by J.R. Bookwalter If you didn’t get enough of an ‘80s flashback with the C64 (aka Commodore 64) emulator app for the iPhone, prepare to really go back to the past all over again. TUAW is reporting that Manomio LLC, the developers of the licensed C64 emulator which is now available free of charge, intend to expand their success with that nostalgic app and are currently working on two new ones -- one for the classic Atari 2600 and another for the Commodore Amiga 500. This is exciting news to those of us at a certain age who grew up with the Atari 2600 as our first home video game console and then later snubbed their nose at the Windows-based PC and even the Macintosh in favor of the Amiga 500, a powerful early competitor to Apple on the hardware and software front that ultimately was Read More
Apr 20th 2010 at 8:00AM I need ScummVM. The problem with the C64 app is that there is a very limited library of supported titles and you basically need to pay for any games you want to add. It's absurd because many titles from this era have been placed into the public domain. I'd love to see an Amiga emulator (the screen resolution on the iPad would be ideal for ports) but not if every single public domain title is going to cost money to run. Actually, very few C64 titles are in the public domain, and those that are are gradually being added as free apps by Manomio. Most C64 titles are still fiercely protected by IP owners, or the ownership is under dispute, or the ownership is unknown (but not 'freeware'). Given the iPhone OS 4.0 restrictions on code being written in Objective-C and these games obviously being 6502 Read More
Back in February we reported that, in an interview with Retro Gamer magazine, Stuart Carnie of Manomio (who brought us C64 for iPhone [App Store]) indicated that he was currently in the process of readying an Amiga emulation system for the iPhone to be used to wrap licensed Amiga games for release as individual iPhone game titles in the App Store, the emulation layer being invisible to the user. Manomio has just released a video demonstrating the system that shows the Amiga games International Karate + and Turrican running quite smoothly in an alpha version of their emulation environment on an iPhone 3GS. This morning, I spoke at length with Stuart regarding his Amiga emulation system. He indicates that his hand-coded 68000 emulator (the Amiga's CPU) was well worth the effort in terms of performance and that the iPhone 3GS is a perfect platform for playing Amiga games in this fashion. Atari 2600 Emulator for iPhone Caught on Video
Calendar16 Mon, 19 Apr 2010 15:08:51 UTC +00:00
Time for some retro crazy-cool gaming action… all on the iPhone. If you grew up in the late 70′s or early 80′s, chances are this will pull at your heart-strings… that is, if you were into gaming back then. Remember the Atari 2600? Well, it turns out that Manomio (the folks that put together the C64 iPhone app) have put together an Atari 2600 emulator for iPhone. Very cool. The video above details the app, which, unfortunately for now is only a demo. No release date or pricing details have been announced… heck, we don’t even know if this is going to be submitted to the App Store or not… But one thing is for sure, i LOVE it when retro gaming options are released to the public. The world would be a better place if we all just chilled and played a game of Frogger together. Note: The C64 App Read More

C64 to stay free, KaleidoVid also free
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Apr 2010 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
A little while back, the C64 app in the App Store (a C64 emulator with officially licensed code from some old Commodore 64 games) announced that it was going free for a day with the Free App a Day promotion. That was a few weeks ago, and you might have noticed that the app is still free in the store. We contacted Manomio's CTO Stuart Carnie to ask him if the app was still free, and he confirmed that yes, C64 is staying a free download. The reasoning is pretty interesting -- the way the app works is that you do get some games for free, and then you can buy more using in-app purchases. Carnie tells us that when the app went free, they saw a spike in games being bought -- twenty times what they were selling previously. Making the app free also vastly increased their user base, and Read More

Commodore Amiga Games Coming from Manomio
Calendar16 Wed, 10 Feb 2010 01:11:57 UTC +00:00
Retro gaming fans can add another item to their "things in life to be excited for" list, as we just got word that Manomio, who brought us the [App Store] emulator, is currently working on bringing an Amiga emulator to the App Store. Retro Gamer magazine recently talked with the developer and Manomio CTO Stuart Carnie, who indicates that games will likely be distributed as individual, packaged apps to keep the Amiga operating system hidden, allowing the player to focus only on the games themselves. There's not much information right now as to just which Amiga games we'll be seeing on the iPhone, but Retro Gamer indicates that, among the games on the way, is Archer MacLean's classic fighter . "We've ported an Amiga system and have secured some great games," says Stuart. "It runs at full speed on a 3GS and similar hardware and at a respectable frame rate for Read More
Believe It: Sega Ultimate Genesis Emulator for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 20 Jan 2010 15:42:45 UTC +00:00
Posted 01/20/2010 at 7:42am | by J.R. Bookwalter Old-school gamers look back fondly on consoles such as the Sega Genesis, which launched the esteemed careers of such characters as Sonic the Hedgehog. Very soon, you can relive those bygone gaming days on your very own iPhone. While Apple has been fairly hardcore about denying emulators a place at the App Store table, Gizmodo is reporting that Sega is about to unleash an official, approved app called Ultimate Genesis in early February. Of course, Sega is no stranger to the App Store, having already released a handful of titles, including Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and the aforementioned hedgehog. Those releases were technically emulated, meaning the apps were emulators with the official ROMs packaged inside -- great for gamers since they were faithful adaptations, although they were a little slow on anything prior to an iPhone 3GS. Thanks to the App Store’s Read More
As the year comes to a close, we were blessed with a good amount of retro titles from the AppStore.  Some of which were garbage retreaded, others were masterpieces.  As you know I am the oldest of the bunch here at a young 37. I have played some of remixed titles in their glory days for sure. Either in a pizza joint or a three story arcade, it was there I cut my teeth on the classics. Have I known how addicting those were back then I could have saved up a boatload of quarters and bought myself something useful like a home console, whatever was the latest at the time.  Even through college I tend to take a “study” break and play some vids. And again as a married man, with two girls, I still play these games in any form they come. Lately it’s my iPhone being plugged in Read More
iPhone Games 2009: A Retro Gamer's Heaven

One of the most surprising things about the App Store is just how big a draw it has been for us old timey gamers like Blake and myself. Being in our mid 30's, we remember the days when processor megahertz were measured in the single digits and having most of these games on your home computer would have been amazing, much less on your a mobile device. That's not to say you have to be over 30 to appreciate these titles. Anyone who has been gaming at all in the past 10 years is sure to find something that appeals to them. Unfortunately, there have been some disappointments along the way, but here's a list of some good retro ports that we've run across in 2009. The Oregon Trail - This isn't quite the same game you'll remember playing in grade school, but it's close enough. The core gameplay was preserved, Read More

iPhone Gaming: Looking Back on 2009 and Forward to 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 20:20:34 UTC +00:00
With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform Read More

C64 Review: It’s A Good Retro Start, Needs MORE Games
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 22:45:02 UTC +00:00
This game has a decent start with the slick interface, but now we need more household titles added to it. I’m a fan of retro gaming and emulators, at least to an extent. Apparently not this Commodore 64 much. I grew up with this machine, but I don’t really remember the graphics being so bad. Also, I don’t recall a single one of the games that comes with the pack-in lineup. At least the interface looks pretty slick. Presentation The overall interface is nicely done. Your available games are laid out in a bookshelf format, with each game occupying a shelf. The main game play screen is divided up into two parts. The top half looks somewhat like a C64 monitor and is where the game is displayed. The bottom half is broken up into a button on the left and a virtual joystick on the right. Black Friday 2009 App Store Sale Extravaganza
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Nov 2009 05:45:08 UTC +00:00
I had planned on settling in tonight, sifting through the tons of emails we've received from developers who are planning to or have put their games on sale, and forming some kind of massive list... Only to discover that TouchArcade forum superstar and all around cool dude Djflippy had completely one-upped me, not only posting a thread with a remarkably comprehensive list, but also alphabetizing said list. All of these games are either on sale currently or either have prices that are currently being modified or will be changed shortly. If something you're looking for isn't the price that we've published, just check back later: There are some serious bargains to be had in that list, and most of these sales are only going to last through the day with some of them extending over the weekend. It's probably not a good idea to wait on downloading any of these games Read More

C64 emulator returns to App Store sans BASIC
Calendar16 Thu, 12 Nov 2009 22:03:00 UTC +00:00
The Commodore 64 emulator application for iPhone was pulled from the App Store by Apple in September for leaving its BASIC interpreter intact and accessible via a backdoor hack. This week, the app has returned after some major rework by its creator, Manomio. C64 no longer contains the BASIC interpreter and Commodore 64 ROM files, since Apple originally rejected the app for these reasons. As a result, the emulator no longer lets you run your own BASIC code inside the app. However, it will still run classic Commodore 64 games, and it now comes with a total of eight free games (with more to come later via in-app purchasing). We tested the new release of C64, and confirmed that the app successfully emulates the venerable Commodore 64 sound and graphics. It includes some modern gaming features, too, such as auto-save and the option to play games full screen in portrait or Read More

Nov 10th 2009 at 10:30PM can't say as i remember any of the included games..... but, man, if this bring us closer to getting some Jet Set Willy action on my iPhone, i'm all about it. The latest version of Frodo in CVS on cebix is under GPL; however, Manomio did acquire a non-transferrable commercial license of Frodo from the author, Christian Bauer. So... What exactly is the license state of Frodo on which this is based? Frodo isn't GPL, according to the source available on http://frodo.cebix.net/ . An extract from the license is: "It may not - not even in parts - used for commercial purposes without explicit written permission by the author. Permission to use it for non-commercial purposes is hereby granted als long as my copyright notice remains in the program. You are not allowed to use the source to create and distribute a modified version of Frodo." Read More

November 9th, 2009 Daniel Silva After quite a roller coaster and drama, the C64 Emulator from Manomio lives on and returns to the AppStore. In case you missed it, Manomio created a C64 emulator that was fully licensed. At first it was rejected by Apple, and after some while was finally approved by Apple… until they got a little naughty and put something in the game they shouldn’t have… It was approved but without the BASIC interpreter. Turns out this was disabled and not removed and it could easily by enabled. And with this, Apple pulled the plug. But enough with the drama. After a long wait it is now back in the store (iTunes Link). This time with the BASIC interpreter removed so Apple won’t cry. We’ll take a closer look at it shortly. You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site. Read More

Manomio’s Commodore 64 Emulator Is Back In The App Store
Calendar16 Mon, 09 Nov 2009 23:00:41 UTC +00:00
Manomio’s Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone and iPod touch has had its fair share of issues, including originally being rejected by Apple way back in June of this year and being pulled from the App Store because Manomio decided to leave the BASIC interpreter intact, but sometimes the best things in life are the most difficult to obtain.  Today, C64 v1.1 has landed safely back in the App Store, and let’s just hope it is here to stay. C64 is a fully licensed Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone and iPod touch. Manomio really went above and beyond to capture the essence of the classic 8-bit home computer system, so hopefully those of you who were already gaming in the early ’80s will feel right at home. C64 v1.1 features everything v1.0 did, minus the BASIC interpreter we assume, but it also sports a few improvements and additions.  It now Read More

Great Start!
goatsrkids2 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fantastic Emulator, comes with great games. Only needs BASIC to make the Commodore experiance complete. Great start though, worth the five dollars for sure.
Amazing, it's finally here!!!
Hiway49 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've waited for this to come for quite awhile, glad it's finally here! Let's face it, this is a must have for any Commodore 64 fan who wants a legal C64 emulator on the go. Is a touch screen joystick the perfect way to play these games? No. Is it usable and passable though? Yes. The presentation is top notch, from the classic blue screen to the cool little shelf your games rest on. More game packs to come, so LETS ALL HOPE JUMPMAN COMES REAL SOON *wink*
Loving this

Neat.

I've never owned one, nor was i alive when these were made, but I like old electronics/game systems, and to those that are yapping about hou it does not have "Basic" should read the last 2 screenshots AND in the app that states that it will be in a future update,The value I put on this app to me is $8-$10
Nice

Cool interface. Will improve as better, more popular games become available. For those of us relatively new to C64: Needs instructions for each game.
Cool, but waiting for better games
retroplayer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
BTW - Basic is easily accesible. Just start a game ( I like Lemans ). When the game starts, then switch to the keyboard and hit the RESET button. You will get the READY prompt right away :)
Nice, but needs more games and instructions
Seditional 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded thos game based off a website and I must admit it is pretty good. I do wish there were a few more games. I will make this 5, once they add more games. Very well designed though and good controls. One thing that is needed is instructions.
Back to the 80's!!

Awesome emulator. I'm glad Apple has finally approved this great App. If you liked the C64 - then you will like this emulator. Looking forward to more games...Ghostbusters, International Karate, Spy vs. Spy
Such Fun!

So retro.

MassSantiago 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The controls are great. The games are fun and it's like owning a classic computer on the iPhone. Glad that 5 games were included with puchase.
Limited and not worth the $5 dollars at the moment, but has potential
LordHog 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I didn't see anywhere in the description column that the C64 did not include BASIC, though it elludes to this fact from stating "We have also included five amazing games for free - just to get you started". One of the screen shots does indicate "Basic is disabled in this version", technically they have informed the public at larget, but it should have been stated in the Application Description. Also, if no games were included then this app would be worthless. The games included are not AAA titles from back in the day, but they are fair. As it stands, the C64 is promising, but at $5 dollars with a few games it over priced. Lost five dollars to nostalgia and not reading what they exactly does. I hope BASIC is enabled in a future update, but I am not holding my breath based upon Apple's past decisions. If they are able to include BASIC then it will be a five star app, but until they give a proper application description and some additional games, it gets a two
Not bad

Aaauuugh 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thanks, Retro. To see the keyboard during a game, go to advanced, and turn on "always show keyboard", then follow Retro's instructions to get to basic. Very basic program - include line numbers: 10 print "hello world" 20 goto 10 Run Love the app! Now to spend hours typing in those games from c64 magazine.

Revbeej 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A saw a video of this app a few months ago and was disappointed that it probably wasn't going to be released. Then today a friend of mine that I went to junior high with many years ago sent me the link. Very cool! It says BASIC is coming. I sure hope so. That would make this the ultimate emulator, IMO. :) Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Space Taxi!
Edit Dude 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Definite potential. I echo the earlier review: an enthusiastic set of crossed fingers for Space Taxi which was my hands-down favorite Commodore game.
Not the same as version shown.
Fototravis 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a cool app and takes me back to the Commodore days. Thanks Retroplayer for the BASIC enable tip! The version is BASIC V2 not X2, I know it's a typo but to keep it genuine. Also, could you guys make the whole screen fit, including the border. It cuts off the READY and the border. Also I hope you guys can buy the rights to Raid Over Moscow from Access Software. Loved that game!!
So far so good...
•ThomasP• 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well I would surely rate this higher but the games that come with this app aren't anything to go crazy about. The developers should have picked perhaps a few more "hits" from the old days. Archon, Space Taxi, IK Karate, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Way of the exploding fist, Ninja, Ghost'n'Goblins and such are sure worth it and I would have expected some of those in this app.
To all the brats with bad ratings...
Jak1249 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
Oh.My.God. Hard to learn controls? It's 1 button and a joystick. Sorry there isn't a million buttons with different uses. Sorry technology wasn't as good as it is now. Sorry your parents have to raise you brats. I'm 16 and I appreciate these games. Hail nostalgia!!
Should be age restricted for very different reasons
Mark McLaughlin 3.0 stars Version: 1.6
If you're of a certain age (I'm looking at me, and the rest of the 30-somethings), you'll appreciate the detail and effort that's gone into this emulator. The faux-reflection is a bit offputting, but the scanline and other monitor overscan effects are great. It's a shame that the set of games is quite limited right now, and the touch-screen controls aren't ideal; it's a good candidate for external Bluetooth keyboard support in OS 4, and an iPad version would be even better again. However - a word of warning, if you're younger and never used a C64, don't understand what LOAD "*",8,1 means, don't know what a floppy disk is (outside of an icon in Microsoft Word) and never had to reset a computer with a paperclip in a serial port then seriously, you'll only be disappointed and frustrated at how backwards this all feels.

whila 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
This is really one of the best apps in the itunes store if you really enjoy old games!
Nice: addition of Basic!
Flowtiel 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
Adding Basic was a fantastic idea! But one important thing remains missing: A virtual Floppy 1541 drive! One needs to be able to save the little programs one writes. Otherwise the whole re-adding of basic is pointless. I doubt anyone wants to write a little basic program if it gets deleted again. So until the possibility of being able to save ones work is added, the addition of basic is pretty much useless. Also, games should never cost more than $.99, especially since they can all be downloaded for free on the pc. [P.S. I would like to see Defender of the Crown added] Last but not least: Thanks for your efforts of keeping the legacy of C-64 alive!!!
Fun
Mr. Rubbertoe 4.0 stars Version: 1.6
Nice app... good to play some of the forgotten titles that a lot of us consider classics. App suggestions: Rocketball, Frantic Freddy... also, while I don't need faux screen reflection, I think it'd be nice for an option to have an animated fake LOAD "*",8,1 then LOADING RUN type screen for a second or two. Also, FYI to others: no voice synth in Space Taxi as of this time.
Pretty kool..
DA king is a best!!! 4.0 stars Version: 1.6
It is ok but needs more "fun" games.
Loads of free games
BM13z 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
it has some good free games, I've only played Mancopter, B. Lee and the racing game but it's awesome, I got #3 score in Mancopter on my first play!! Pros: cubic buttloads of awesome FREE games has in game manuals no glitches/bugs/crashes yet :D high scores for most games classic 80's feeling Cons: it's so addicting that I played it until my iPod touch's battery was at 20% :)
Great

IAmEchoBravo 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
I LOVE IT! Thank you (and Apple?) for re-enabling BASIC functionality. That alone increased the value and enjoyment of this app TENFOLD!! I agree with Eric, I'd love to see LOAD/SAVE capability, even as an in-app purchase. I'd also be interested in paying for an importing utility. Even at $9.99, a tool that would allow me to use all my current games and magazine-on-disk subscriptions would be WELL worth it! P.S. - This is NOT the place to post bug reports, nor should you ever rate ANY app based on a bug. This developer is VERY responsive and updates C64 frequently. You should use the "Report A Problem" button for bug reports, watch for the update, then return here to give this app the rating it deserves. (4-5 stars at least!)
Oh my gosh....

Controls need tweaked. Badly.
jackal27 2.0 stars Version: 1.4
Hey guys, I'm really loving this app and I bought every game. I never had a commodore 64, so this is all new to me and I like it. However, the virtual joystick is just SO clunky!! I can barely control the games I'm playing. With these iPhone touch-screen joysticks it's all too important to make them work well and this one does not. I think that one way to fix this would be in make the joystick feel more like joysticks in other games. This one just jumps from direction to direction. Another way could be to possible have a D-Pad option. I know it's not like the C64 had a d-pad, but c'mon. If you improve the controls, I promise to buy more of your games a change my review to 5 stars.
fantastic vintage gaming without the wait
JeepSurfer 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Did I hate that tape recorder, the waits, the fails, but this is epic. Worth it for Int'l tennis, int'l soccer and Bruce Lee alone, There is some excellent stuff in the free games to justify this purchase, and the in app shop keeps growing. And how about attack of the mutant camels? It was like playing the Empire Strikes back on your TV! Glorious gaming for retro-fans.

I spent a large part of my teen years attached to my C64. I still have fond memories of it. The emulator seems to do a pretty good job of running the games. The graphics and sound look correct. My gripes with this app: 1. I think the games you can buy cost too much. I wouldn't mind paying $1 for 3 games, but $1 per? 2. There are a lot of games not available for purchase. 3. The joystick control doesn't work that well for me. I've tried to get used to it, but it just doesn't cut it.
