App Showdown: TomTom vs. Navigon
Calendar16 Tue, 14 Dec 2010 17:50:12 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/14/2010 at 9:50am | by Matthew Tilmann As blizzards and the like bear down on the nation, sometimes traveling can get a little dicey, and it can be easy to lose where you're at.  Granted, you could probably just pull over and open a map, but why not let your iPhone do that for you?  We highlight two apps that are the leaders, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, and TomTom's U.S. & Canada app. Before we get going, when it comes to GPS apps, one of the largest questions most have is, "how much is this gonna cost me?" As of the time of this writing, Navigon and TomTom are both at $59.99 USD.  Let's get driving! When Navigon's app first came out, many were leery of it, because of the fact that Navigon's portable devices came to an abrupt halt in the US, so many wondered if the app would Read More
6 Tips for Turning Your iPhone into an Android Phone
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 13:50:47 UTC +00:00
href="http://digg.com/submit?url=http%3A//www.ismashphone.com/2010/12/turning-your-iphone-into-an-android-phone.html"> Right now much of the mobile world seems to be strongly divided between iOS and Android. Both are great mobile operating systems with their own unique features. There are areas where Android is ahead, and there are areas where iOS is ahead. Let’s take a look at some of the features that can make your iPhone feel more like an Android device: Non-Jailbreak 1) Google Voice Google Voice officially made its way to the iPhone last month. It combines your SMS messages, dialer and Google Voice mail messages within the App. Push notifications will alert you when someone sends a message to your Google voice number. 2) CoPilot This isn’t a Google application, but it’s a great navigation App for the iPhone. It works well and the price is reasonable at $19.99 if you already have an iPhone. Our recommendation? Make sure you have a car charger and somewhere to Read More

Posted 10/04/2010 at 12:36pm | by Andrew Hayward Each new iPhone has offered fresh and fantastical ways to improve your daily life, but the epic tag-team of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 deliver the greatest set of tools and features to date. With the introduction of FaceTime video calls, multitasking, and the high resolution Retina display, the iPhone 4 has moved even further away from being just a powerful phone and web-surfing device. Between the built-in features and the hundreds of thousands of options in the App Store, not to mention a few key accessories, the iPhone 4 can be figuratively formed and changed to fit your daily needs, whether you’re planning your daily commute, knocking out items on your to-do list, or simply looking to try a new restaurant. With this wide-ranging versatility in mind, we’ve come up Read More
ALK Technologies is launching ActiveTraffic, a real-time traffic service that integrates traffic flow information with CoPilot Live GPS navigation app. Developed in co-operation with INRIX (which we covered in the past), the CoPilot Live ActiveTraffic “intelligently calculates” the best route to avoid traffic congestion and provide an accurate estimated time of arrival (ETA). The software (actually it’s the INRIX’ servers) continuously monitors your route for delays as you drive and alerts you if a faster route is available. If it is available, CoPilot Live will indicate the estimated time you’ll save and provide an option to preview the new route. At a glance you can see the real-time traffic conditions along your route – sections where traffic is traveling freely are indicated green, those with moderate congestion in yellow and severe congestion in red. CoPilot Live, of course, takes all of this information into account to maintain a realistic estimated time Read More
Updated for iOS 4: Bing, CoPilot, Gowalla, Waze, Osfoora
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Jul 2010 15:44:05 UTC +00:00
By Allyson Kazmucha, Wednesday, Jul 7, 2010 | As you all know, we’ve been watching the App Store for iOS4 compatible updates. We’ve found a few we think are worthy of a postup, and as normal, if you guys find anything especially awesome, feel free to leave it in a comment or send it to me in an e-mail (ally (dot) kazmucha (at) tipb (dot) com) and if we think it’s awesome too, we’ll include it in our next roundup! Hit the jump to see what we found lurking in the App Store this time! Bing is relatively new to the search game, but it’s definitely holding it’s own. As far as search engines go, I’m a fan of how Bing is organized and how it now interacts with your social networks. Bing is now updated for iOS4 support (mainly multitasking). There was no talk of support for the retina display Read More

CoPilot Live adding free in-app search
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Feb 2010 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
The makers of CoPilot Live North America are including free search from within its iPhone app. Previously the search function was a premium add-on. CoPilot Live is $34.99 with most of the features users expect, like turn by turn voice directions, 2D and 3D driving views and U.S. plus Canada Maps. According to the company, CoPilot Live v8's integrated access to local search enables users to quickly and easily find whatever they are looking for, whether it's the nearest service, product, brand or shop. Search results are displayed in the on-screen map or as a list. The integrated search will be a free update for current customers, but the company has not given us a certain date for availability pending approval from Apple. We've looked at the app before, and found it pretty useful. Users at the App Store give it mixed ratings. It should be more competitive now with integrated Read More
CoPilot Live now offers almost complete nav app for free
Calendar16 Wed, 20 Jan 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
ALK Technologies, the creators of CoPilot Live, have released a free version of their navigation app with some catches. The free version, called CoPilot Directions [iTunes link] has turn-by-turn navigation, trip planning and 2D maps. You can download the whole map database over Wi-Fi (not via iTunes) or you can download individual states or cities to save space on your iPhone. If you download the free version, you get a free, 30-day sample of the complete app, including voice navigation with street names, 3D views, and the ever important option to update to the full version. After 30 days users can opt to continue using premium voice-guided GPS navigation with a 12-month or 30-day subscription via in-app purchase ($19.99 and $2.99 respectively), or they can simply continue to enjoy free lifetime use of map-only, turn-by-turn directions. CoPilot Directions sits alongside a feature-complete version called CoPilot Live North America [iTunes link], which Read More
Cheap GPS: Gokivo app drops to 99 cents
Calendar16 Mon, 04 Jan 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Just to clarify, that 99 cents buys you 30 days' worth of navigation (complete with real-time traffic). After that, Gokivo will cost you $4.99 per month or $39.99 if you pay annually (a considerable savings). It will cost you more over the long haul than a flat-rate app like CoPilot or MobileNavigator, but Gokivo might be a more attractive option for infrequent drivers--since there's no contract, no commitment. If you're like me and only occasionally need turn-by-turn navigation assistance, you can, literally, pay as you go. Gokivo now supports in-app transactions, so if you're leaving for a road trip or happen to get lost somewhere, just tap out $4.99 and presto: You've got another month of GPS. If you want to learn about the app's navigation acumen, read Dong Ngo's recent comparison of Gokivo and MapQuest (another subscription-based solution). But I think with an entry point of just 99 cents and Read More
EA Games hits hard on December 22nd, bringing out a total of 24 games on sale, while the Appvent Calender offers up "Sponge Dude." Christmas is quickly approaching, and sadly, so is the end of many of these deals. But don’t despair yet, because the sales just keep rolling in. Namco just kicked off their “winter sale” yesterday, and EA is back in the game, too! At least this is a nice surprise from EA! EAMobile just sent out two tweets saying, “The following titles will be up to 50% off for the rest of the holiday season! Happy Holidays everyone! Boggle, Madden 10, NBA Live, Rock Band, Surviving High School, Wolfenstein RPG, American Idol, and more!” “And more?” Shockingly, that “and more” includes the likes of Scrabble, Tetris, and Need for Speed: Shift. Mysteriously, some titles that were supposed to stay at $0.99 ’til Christmas are now at higher prices Read More

Nav apps keep updating, adding features
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Dec 2009 21:15:00 UTC +00:00
Today it's CoPilot live, continuing a holiday sale price of U.S. $24.99 [iTunes link] through the end of December. We've had a look at the app before. It is good for a low-cost app, but the database seems a bit out of date and the POI list is limited. The new version adds live traffic, local search and fuel prices for an extra $19.95. The new features are for 12 months only, and then you would have to renew. The new features make up for the POI omissions, but it costs extra to solve the problem. As all these GPS apps race to add features and keep prices down, we all benefit. And of course, we're still holding our breath to see if the new Google Navigator app makes it through the Apple approval gauntlet. With word that Apple has bought a mapping technology company and wants to beef up mapping, Read More

ALK is dropping the price of CoPilot Live North America from $35 down to $20, starting tomorrow. Since CoPilot was already our favorite non-subscription budget GPS app, this is nice to hear. We're not sure when the sale ends—maybe ALK hasn't decided—but if you have at least a marginal interest in GPS apps for your iPhone or Android, it might be time to plunk down some cash for it. $20 ain't free, and CoPilot's looks sometimes verge on gaudy, but it's a competent, frequently updated app, and now a steal compared to even the cheapest subscription GPS app. [Android Version; iPhone Version; iTunes Link] Update: This offer is extended until 9am Eastern Time on Tuesday, December 1st. CoPilot Live for iPhone updates features and maps
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Nov 2009 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
We're seeing a lot of updates to navigation applications, and the latest is for the CoPilot Live app [iTunes link] for the iPhone. As promised, the company has updated the map data to fix mistakes or omissions that were reported by users. The latest update also adds iPod controls within the app, which many users were requesting. The update fixes a reported address search issue, improves GPS reception and makes some improvements to the user interface. The previous version of the U.S. $34.99 app added text to speech and a better method of text entry. As we've mentioned before, the competition in nav apps is going to get very interesting if Apple allows the Google nav app into the app store. It will be free, and has a host of features that are not currently available in the paid apps that are shipping for the iPhone now. With the FCC watching Read More
Video App Review: CoPilot Live GPS
Calendar16 Mon, 19 Oct 2009 15:51:29 UTC +00:00
Rating: 8 out of 10Pros: A tremendous amount of options including the unique “Live” feature.  Accurate, nice layout and user interface, extremely affordable compared to some other GPS applications.Cons: Sometimes it will bring route you a direction you would never think of, for example, instead of taking all highways it will route you through some back roads and I know the area and it is not the fastest route.  All options are not active as of yet but should be in later versions.  With all the options it could be confusing for the novice GPS user.Overall: CoPliot Live for iPhone is a very detailed GPS app.  It has a ton of options and the “Live Services” feature is extremely unique.  With clean maps and a large POI database CoPilot is one of the best GPS apps for iPhone.  There are a few issues I would like to see addressed: CoPilot advertises Read More
It's uncanny. When known software gets repackaged for iPhones and iPod Touches and passes through the hallowed gates of the App Store, something happens: Almost invariably, it gets cheaper. Waaay cheaper. Good right? Well, not always. The App Store is a strange new place for developers. Veterans and newcomers engage in bareknuckle combat, driving prices down to levels people wouldn't have imagined charging just a few years ago. Margins drop to razor-thin levels while customers expect apps to get cheaper and cheaper, but with ever increasing quality and depth. For developers, for other software platforms and potentially for the increasingly fickle customers themselves, it's uncharted, and treacherous, territory. But the most bizarre thing of all is—in an effort to keep people in the App Store, and to prevent competitors from getting a toehold in the mobile app business—Apple's charting a course straight into it. "The App Store is a very competitive Read More
CoPilot Live navigates to more features
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Sep 2009 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
CoPilot Live [iTunes link] for North American roads is becoming the little engine that could. At only US$34.99 it is quickly adding new features, and in this latest update has added the coveted text to speech capability. For drivers, that means the nav app will say "turn left on Elm street" instead of "turn left just ahead". Other new features include adding an iPhone-standard keyboard for entering destinations, instead of the one designed for the app (which was clunky). The maps have been updated, and the developer says there is better integration of the address book from the iPhone. I took CoPilot for a drive. It acquired the GPS signal quickly and I was on my way. It looks like the POI database has been improved, and the text to speech worked as anticipated. It is a great addition, and even the TomTom still doesn't have that feature. Navigon and AT&T Read More
GPS Summary – Comparison of all iPhone GPS applications
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Sep 2009 16:35:28 UTC +00:00
Last week, I worked my way through all of the currently available iPhone on-board GPS applications. I stuck with just the applications that held all of the maps on-board — meaning that you didn’t need to have a network connection to use the maps or routing. CoPilot came out as our winner as it has the best features, though some very confusing, for it’s price. But we thought it would be a good idea to do a re-cap and compare all 5 of the GPS I looked at last week and include the first iPhone GPS application, G-Map. Odds and Ends Click, Ignore, Repeat Taking a look at some of the odds and ends, some of the things that you don’t usually think of when thinking about GPS applications, these features can really add to or detract from the value of a GPS application on the iPhone. One example, the annoying Read More

Our Saturday review of CoPilot Live [iTunes Link] raised some interesting questions among users of the US$34.99 app. TUAW reader Jeremy sent us an email this morning wondering why the Live Local Search feature of the app is now a paid feature, when it was free on the first version that was released. This clever feature used an internet connection to find nearby points of interest, even though the maps and bulk of the POI database are on the app itself. It was a great way to keep the app up to date, using a blend of static maps and info with an internet supplement. With the latest update to the app (version 8.0.0.096) that feature is now part of a US$19.99 annual update that also adds real time traffic updates and gas price searches. At first blush, it seems like features should not be taken away in an update. I Read More
I took a look at CoPilot Live [iTunes link] almost exactly a month ago, and it was a pretty good, inexpensive nav program, but it had quite a few rough edges. Those rough edges aren't so rough now, and the app is certainly competitive at a price of US$34.99. Improvements from the last version include: As in my previous drive around, GPS acquisition was rapid. The maps look fine. The 'voice' was clear, and directions were concise. Although the company claims maps were updated for this release, there seemed to be a lot missing in my neck of the woods, and reports from users of the new version are not positive in that regard. As I tried to navigate to my house, CoPilot Live could find the street but not any house numbers, even though my street has had houses on it for at least a decade. Continue reading for more Read More
If you haven’t heard, the iPhone now supports turn by turn navigation apps. These apps essentially turn your iPhone into one of those portable navigational devices which people refer to as “my navi” or “my GPS”. Overall, the apps are quite good. They work well, they look great, and having a turn by turn navigational system on your cell phone is highly convenient. The Palm Pre, unlike the iPhone which requires purchasing an app from the App Store, comes equipped with one of these apps, and it’s free with the Sprint service plan. The Pre’s app, “Telenav By Sprint”, is quite frankly the perfect turn by turn navigational app for a cell phone, and we compared the 5 most popular American navigational iPhone apps to the Pre app.  Look below for a detailed table comparing the applications on 20 different parameters. Note: For these applications you will 100% need a car charger Read More

Needs Plenty of Work
digiprod 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I own Navigon, G-Map, xGPS (Cydia) on my iPhones and I tried AT&T, Gokiva and Sygic. I also own a Garmin and a factory installed Navigation in my Toyota. So I am a bit of a GPS junkie.
Lots of Features Nice interface Great Price but it has significant bugs
David in Norfolk 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
Has a great price and every feature I could ask (except for the voice stating the names of the streets - that would be nice). It has a nicer user interface than my $170 Garmin Nuvi. However, this app just came out and as such it has some bugs.
Wrong maps, wrong directions, wrong prompts in California
lelitsch 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I really liked this app: nice UI, nice looking maps, good voices. But then I took it on a test drive in the East Bay and couldn't be more disappointed. Just some of the problems:
Best Value Of All!!!
EvenStephen2000 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I've only used this on three tested routes around town but let me say that I'm extremely impressed, so far! This is an excellent value for what you get. By "What you get", I mean you get everything the other GPS apps offer at literally HALF the price. I also have Navigon, Sygic and X-Road. I like them all but this one is, by far, the best value of all. I don't have the IGO app because I don't know enough about them to shell out $80 when I can get this for $35. They need to think about their pricing. Back to this app: I did a preliminary feature comparison and while there's more I need to check out, I highly recommend just buying the dang thing! The features seem to be endless and there's even a live service which I'll have to check out. The look is really nice and I was very impressed with the menu layout and logic. The signal locked in more quickly than any of the other ones. I don't know why, since it's actually the iPhone that does that. I just know it got signal much faster than the rest. Really! Glad I found this one! I'll update this review after I check out more of the features. No, I'm not a relative or family member. I'm just someone who is hooked on the GPS apps!
Horribly out of date street database
BosephusIV 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
Although there are certainly some good things about this app (covered nicely in other reviews), a GPS can be no better than its database - and this database is the worst I have ever used. Our street is 15 years old and is not in the database! We have family members who live in six different homes within 20 miles of us - these homes are on streets that are from four to ten years old - none of the streets are in the CoPilot database! If CoPilot's manufacturer cannot provide a more complete database in an update, this app will continue to be virtually worthless to me and will go in the trash.
Most Readable GPS Yet, but Misleading Sales and Buggy
BearMarkH 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
This is the first iPhone GPS that I can read well from the dashboard mount that I use. Most of the colors provide good contrast so that you can actually see roads and read the names. The zoom buttons are an exception... can barely tell what they are, but once you know, then it's no problem. My main gripe is that the site lists features like "lane assist" as a feature, but you don't find out until you buy that it's actually an add-on that you'll need a license for at an unspecified price. There are many of these "premium" features that aren't represented as add-ons in the app description, except for real-time traffic updates. Some of these include display of speed limits, off board routing, various real-time traffic subscriptions, premium POIs, landmarks, etc. They should be more up front about this. The current description makes it appear as if all features will be included, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Good value but buggy
ufotofu 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
This looks like a program released before it was ripe, but it does do the main things a basic nav program should do.
Maps need updating
cabbie219 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
Some years ago, I used CoPilot with my PDA and although responsive, the map data was incomplete with entire neighborhoods that have been around for years not included. I was hopeful that after all these years the map data would have caught up to the present. Sadly, they have not. However, the app is very responsive and could be greatly improved if alternate routes could be made by the user instead of by the app. There have been some trips I've entered where the 'green' line and yellow arrows did not appear, which required that I re-enter my destination. Even with its shortcomings, this is currently the best navigation app available for the iPhone. And for the difference between the prices of the upcoming TomTom app, this app can't be beat. For those areas not included in the map, I still have my Google maps. Looking forward to the updates...
Maps are over 6 years old
Madscott 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I entered addresses that have been there for over 6 Years and they don't exist on these maps.
Excellent GPS program
Jfurball 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I have wanted copilot GPS for awhile. This is the first version of the program so it needs to have some updates, but for the price it is perfect!! As soon as I had started the app for the first time I had an immediate GPS lock. I use the GPS in my car through the kenwood BT unit, the only problem I see is there is no separate volume control for this programs voices. I am looking forward to getting lane assist and traffic updates. Keep up the good work ALK!!!
Third best sat nav program for iPhone right now
nodis 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
Compared to Navigon and iGO May Way, I'd rank CoPilot Live third. On the pro side, it seems stable, the map colors are good, and it looks like there will be plenty of configurability when all the greyed-out features are implemented. The UI is responsive.
No address recognition :(
Jmiah.com 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I downloaded, updated, and set up... tried to do my home address, it could NOT find my road. I tried my first destination... it could NOT find my road... first impresion... NOT IMPRESSED yet :(
Needs major update
Good hndz 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I have lived in my subdivision for 6 years and this APP does not even show my street properly (my street is a complete 1/2 mile loop and program only shows a 1/4 mile straight line that isn't even labeled correctly). All other NAV apps I own display area correctly. Also, does not allow me to save my home address as the map is not current. In fact, based on missing streets, the maps are at least 4-6 years old! Update the map and I'll be happy to revisit my rating. Great start here...I foresee blowing Navigon and the higher higher priced nav apps away once you work the bugs and UPDATE THE MAPS.
Good features, Bad function
Optimus Prune 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
Installed on 3G without issue. I also have Navigon app so using that as a comp. Pros: 1. Quick bootup and GPS lock is robust. 2. Lots of options. Automatic day/night. Map colors. Voices. Display customization. 3. Price. Cons: 1. Byzantine maps. Streets and businesses that have been around for nearly 10 years are not here. By far the biggest weakness of the app. Ancient. 2. Contacts function does not work if the contact was saved from Google Maps app, which for most people will be 80%-90% of the time. Copilot just sits there and does nothing. 3. Small glitches mentioned elsewhere in these reviews. E.g. lack if qwerty keyboard. Copilot shows a lot of promise, but it will remain a distant competitor until it updates the maps. After all, what could be more important to a GPS app?
Great app - IF you can get it to install.
rosencrantz 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I don't know if its because its 1.4gb app - but I had a terribly hard time to get this to install. Twice itunes just froze half way thru and I was to restart the phone. I tried it on my 3gs and my wife's 3g and same thing. I finally did get it to install but I live in fear of when an update comes out! Once installed, its a very very good app - very feature rich and the price is fantastic.
LOVE THIS APP HANDS DOWN!!!
tonytech 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
So far this is a great app, I love the UI and all the features it has. It is reasonably priced. I only hope they add Voice Recognition and I would be on top of the world… Keep up the good work ALK.
Needs a lot of Bug Fixing
nashby 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I just bought it yesterday as I could not wait any longer for Tom Tom and the price was also affordable, But I think this app seriously needs some big fixes. On my first 15 mile trip it lost GPS signal atleast 6 times and sometimes the voice would not work at all when it is supposed to. Had to power down my iphone for it to work properly. I hope they would fix these issues and add Text to speech so you would not be looking at the screen while on the highways that has multiple crossroads. I also found out the maps are outdated as it did not recognize local roads that were there for 2 years. Until these are fixed, I would leave my rating at 1.
Can't Get A GPS Fix?
Fitzy2004 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
From the time I downloaded this (two days go) till now I can't get the gps to fix to my location. It Just keeps trying to find the current position i am in but it never finds it. I tested it 5x in NJ yesterday and 3x in Philadelphia and not once could it find me. Major cities. Mean while the built in maps application found me every time in seconds. Am I doing something wrong? I've restarted the phone multiple times. It's getting pretty annoying having bought an app I can't get to work.
Not worth the money
SerpicoLugNut 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
Where to begin? First, it's buggy. Click on nearby restaurants, and you get Hotels. The modules that show your current speed aren't enabled. The app eschews the built in iPhone keyboard for it's own - a non qwert, alphabetized keyboard! The worst thing is that it doesn't have accurate data. My neighborhood, which is over 10 years old, doesn't exist in it's database. My friends house, which is over 50 years old, isn't in it either. Unacceptable for a GPS app. Save your money for TomTom or Navigon. This app isn't worth it.
Can't find gps signal in las vegas
Ajmcferrin 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem but the app is always telling me " determining location" so it never gives me a starting location. Plus my home is 3 years old and it doesn't even have the street in the database. Wondering how I can get my money back
A Great Start, from a Great Company, with a Great History!
Albuquerque? 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I've used CoPilot on my laptop and Windows Mobile devices/phones since it was released. This is, by far, the best iteration yet and clearly promises more. Losing CoPilot was the only thing that kept me from moving to iPhone in the first place and the only thing I've missed since I made the switch. I can't wait to see the promised improvements, and am so excited to having my faithful traveling companion back!
Good Start for sure ... needs some tweaks to make it Big!!
kingalric 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I have been using this App for the past day or so on my iPhone 3GS. I drove to a few places I felt were on the interior roads, some drives on the highway and did some driving to places (post office 10 mi away, dunkin donuts etc). I think this App comes with a good user interface. The maps are clear to read when I hold the phone around an arm's distance or even a bit more. The GPS lock-in was really quick. The voice instructions were clear to understand (you have 2 options - male or female, as almost all GPS devices do). Both are good and easy to understand. You can set how often you want the instructions (in terms of how many miles before a particular turn etc). The UI presents a lot of options on how to use this App (car, RV, walk, motorcycle, local weather). As a whole, it is good and the directions are just as good as any other navigation unit or even better.
I really want to like this app
marcw911 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
There are a lot of configurable options in this app which is kinda cool but this does make the UI seem a little complicated and cluttered. The Navigon is simpler but this app has a planning mode which is important to me. I'm still testing the gps routing accuracy and logic. I will say this app is way better than g-maps and ATT navigator.
Wow F,ing amazing
Will2099 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I work at the back of LAX and the app took me there somthing both my Mio and Garvin gps can't do at this price this app is a steal sory Tom Tom you took to long
Real road signs
Pigsnot 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
This is not anywhere as graphical as Navigon. Neither choose the most logical route. Navigon had real roadsigns. This just looks clunky. There also are a lot of grayed out menu choices. Having said that I'll keep CoPilot.
CoPilot NA vs MobileNavigator NA
rodneyck4u 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I now own both CoPilot NA and MobileNavigator NA, and together the combined price closely matches the TomTom (which I have not tried and probably will not given its mediocre reviews.)
Great application
LA_CoPilot 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I used Copilot for years on a pocket PC before buying a TomTom all-in-one GPS system. I prefer CoPilot and was very happy to see it in the App store at this price point. I have not tried the TomTom app, but I can't imagine its any better than this. The only reason it does not get 5 stars is because the keyboard is horrible! Allow me to use the standard iPhone keyboard and add affordable traffic routing and the app will be perfect!
Good start, worth buying needs update
SkyFalcon 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I have used ALK products before and I have loved it. Overall this is a good product. Please ALK fix or add the following issues and features. - "Text-to-speech" is essential. Driver safety issue. - "one way" road signs are not shown in map. - Better keyboard is needed. - Need a way to import address from iPhone contact. - UPDATE outdated maps
If I could I'd give this program zero stars, I Would

GFA(Goodlooking Far Away) but, when you get up close, it's a ugly heifer. I was so excited to get this program. Then I took my iphone with me to help my husband find a place for a job interview that should have been a breeze for this to find. The address wasn't even in the program. Ooooh wait but it get's better.......none of the addresses where in there. I work for a computer company so, it wasn't that I can't find my way around a electronic device. Look people save yourself the money.....especially in this economy.
Do not waste your money
rkenn 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
While the UI is pretty, that's about as far as this app goes. The sales information is misleading when it comes to included features, and the maps.... The maps are so bad I would hardly call this a GPS system. It can not find 50% of my contacts addresses in a major city like Atlanta. Most of those on streets that are 10+ years old. Pretty does not cut it for gps when it get's you lost constantly. This app has caused me to seek a refund from the store for the first time.
Not perfect, but a perfectly good value
trecho 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.331
I own both a TomTom and a Garmin. My TomTom has led me onto a farmer's dirt road through his field, and my Garmin has led me in circles through an established neighborhood in search of a non-existent street. My Garmin has turned a 45 minute trip into a 2 hour trip for my wife. My Garmin has told me to turn around for 12 miles on a freeway where I know the much shorter way was to keep going to the next exit. SO - I take any GPS directions with a grain of salt, looking at a regular or Google map to make sure the route makes sense.
Getting closer but certainly good enough!
Toadmanlive 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.396
When I downloaded this app a few weeks ago I felt torn. It was like the pretty, but ditzy, shallow dream girl from high school. The application looks beautiful alright but once I used it, the appearance did not matter. Route mistakes, poor POI, non-standard keyboard and on and on. Now, with the updates things are much improved on all fronts. The POI list is clearly better as is the routing. I have used it for two days now along paths I know well and it is using better routing logic. Here is my summary:
Lack of map data
The_RB 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
The user interface is great. The route optimization function is great. Then why such a low rating? Lack of map data.
Getting better all the time
muecker 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
I'm rewriting my previous review and adding a star as CoPilot Live continues to receive updates and continues to improve. This makes two updates in the short amount of time I have owned it. This type of dedication by the developer will win my support every time. The latest update includes yet another map update as well as Text to Speech and the ability for the app to download map updates. There are many other features such as lots of customization, clear maps, restarting where you left off (added after the previous update), automatic day/night mode, gas prices, weather, POI (with some issues), trip planning, etc. CoPilot is the cheapest of the GPS apps that provide turn-by-turn navigation and downloaded maps but has most (if not all) of the features of the expensive programs like Navigon and Tom Tom. Earlier tonight I ran a demo of the route from my house to work.

Great GPS App - Very responsive with updates
vinnybear 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
Obviously ALK is paying attention to customer feedback. The original release was perhaps only 2 or 3 star worthy, but with the new additions of in app updates, native iphone keyboard, map updates (which are pretty good I have found), text to speech* and the responsiveness the release updates that care for known issues or that improve the overall GPS experience, CoPilot looks to be the best GPS app out there, and all that with the best price tag!

Great Nav App
Htownuser 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
I have been using this app since Aug when it first come out. The original version was adequate as a nav tool at least in Houston area and in several places I traveled to in Texas. The latest update made this app the de facto choice for Nav on iPhone based on the ample features offered and the great price for a replacement of a stand-alone GPS device. By adding monthly map update free of charge would no doubt make this app even better in the future. The features I would love to have in the future are integrated iPod control, lane assists, speed warning, and live-traffic (even fee-based). Overall I am very satisfied with the latest version and would recommend to anyone who wants to have a very good and affordable Nav app for their iPhone . Great job and keep up the good work!
It's getting better all the time....
Toadmanlive 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
I have used the last several versions of this software and am pleased to see the developer respond so quickly and frequently to improve the application. The TTS is great as is the improved keyboard. I have found the maps and POI database to be fine for me. I really like the ability to select a poi on the map and have it bring up the option to navigate or dial to it. This is a great application and value. Keep the map updates coming! Glad I did not pay double the price for the alternatives!

My street isn't even in the database!
Art Harrington 3.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
I like the app. It works well but when your own street doesn't appear in the apps database then it really makes the app kinda worthless! I've also found other streets that I can't find! And by the way my neighborhood has been around for a few years!
Impessive!
Bhlane 4.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.421
For the price, this app is very impressive. Easy to use, easy to understand, and comparable to many stand- alone navigators 3x the cost. My recommendation would be to allow music to be played while in use, incorporating a mute function when the voice prompts are audible, and provide map updates regularly.
An hour and a half to update

Worth $20
Aanadil 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.512
I originally gave this app 4 stars but am reducing it to 2 stars now. Reason being that I have used the app for 6 days now in San Diego,CA. POIs are just okay. My first search for San Diego State University stated the campus was located in Los Angeles!!! give me a break. It now has several listings just for SDSU now. The maps work but its ALK maps in the USA, in Europe they get NAVTEQ along with more features in the app. My biggest gripe is the live services. We have to pay $19.99 per year for live search, live traffic and live gas prices. Out of the three, only live traffic should be an option to buy. Navigon's next update includes Google Local Search FOR FREE. Even though I only spent $20 for this, I would rather have Navigon at $69.99 with the NAVTEQ maps, better iPod integration, and live search. If you bought CoPilot for $35 plus live services for $19.99 well guess what? In the long run, Navigon is cheaper. I am disappointed in my purchase. I would rather much check for traffic and do a live search with Google Maps. Your in-app purchase will be useless without a cellular signal and Google is still a better option. We can't even copy and paste an address and even if we could, there is no guarantee that CoPilot will have it in its ALK map.
Quality Product
Deerpark007 5.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.469
I have had this app for a few months now. Prior to purchasing this app I had bought and used G Maps E and Navigon. My frustration with G Maps has been well documented by others before they pulled it from the app store. With Navigon I found it very difficult to read the street information displayed plus there is no route planning functions and as a bus driver I found it far too limiting. Co-Pilot has a comprehensive route planning format allowing me to detour/avoid roads of my choosing as well as stops on the way. The software offers sensible alternatives in these situations and works very well! The UI is very well put together in comparing it to Navigon and G Maps. I have just completed a vacation from VA to FL and it performed admirably even with phone call interruptions. I am surprised at the sley of average ratings that I've just reviewed. Most have to do with outdated maps which I found in my experience in VA and in FL while vacationing not to be the case. The update version that I have just added has the intergrated Ipod vehicle which is most welcome. I am slightly disappointed that they didn't include the options of controlling what happens when direction is spoken. It really would assist to have the music either "duck" or mute when spoken direction is given. Also Speed Limits need to be added because as I found on my trip down to FL there are too many roads that aren't adequately posted and it would be wonderful to not have to be worrying about your speed all the time. Much has been said about live traffic and live POI and I'm one of the hopefuls for it to be added later on. Finally the voices speaking Text to Speech are too robotic in sound but are clear and well articulated. This app gets 5 stars from me not because it's perfect. The developer has been very responsive to my e-mails. It gets 5 stars because this $40 app is delightful to use, functional and solid. Having used the other 2 apps I previously mentioned I have to say that this app ROCKS!! The customization is endless. My money is on Co-Pilot. To the developers I say keep up the good work!!

If you don't have a turn-by-turn GPS this is an awesome value for you if you have an iPhone. If you already have a GPS but have considered getting a app for travel, this will work great for you too.
VERY poor addres parsing!
tabaks 1.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.469
This has been a problem from the day one and hasn't been corrected yet. The address parser is as unintuitive as it can only be. Even a single period (.) where app doesn't like it completely renders it dumb. Like, (Rd.) isn't recognized by the app as an abreviation for (Road). How ridiculous is that? Also, I can browse the map to Flagg Creek in wide area Chicago, IL but it is NOT recognized as part of the address I constructed by looking from the map the app supplies! WHAT???!!! If I could give 1/2 star, I would!
Updated Maps
Wow fans 2.0 stars Version: 8.0.0.469
I really want to like this as it has a great interface and many options. However, a GPS APP is only as good as its map. Yes it comes with MAPSURE, but why should I need to input every address in my contact book and hope it gets updated in 45 days. The maps are apparently very very outdated and makes this app pretty much useless. It has a good POI database, but even some of the ones that were in there the maps were not updated enough to get me to where I needed to go. I put in the POI it got me near where it was supposed to be and told me to take a right straight into the woods. Of course, everything was on the left hand side of the road and there was absolutely nothing to the right. I blame that on the maps, because all of the roards around the POI were not in the app. It does not have my address in there which is 3 years old and a local mall that has many side roads. I could not take me to my brothers house (which my TomTom stand alone could take me with no problem) because the streen name did not exist. I tried quite a few contacts and only a few could it locate.
