By Rob LeFebvre on August 11th, 2010 Most folks get in shape before the summer and bathing suit weather hits. Why not get a head start on next year's perfect body with four great apps to help you start, maintain and track your healthy new habit? Couch to 5K – The popular Couch To 5 K (C25K) Program was originally designed at CoolRunning.com to help new runners ease into the sport, allowing thousands of runners to participate and enjoy one of the most basic human activities without injury or pain. This is one of the more well designed C25K apps in the App Store, having been designed by Felt Tip, Inc. (experienced Mac and iPhone developers). Use this app to train yourself across 9 weeks, starting with very short activities and getting to 5K. You can use it with your own music playlists and it even integrates with Nike+. Review: Griffin Streamline for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Jul 2009 17:46:30 UTC +00:00
By Chad Garrett, Wednesday, Jul 8, 2009 | The Griffin Streamline is available from The iPhone Blog Store for $19.95. If you are looking for a running/workout case that is lean and comfortable, then look no further than the Griffin Streamline! Let’s see how it measure up after the break! The Griffin Streamline is made of a plastic outer rim, a neoprene “sleeve” that holds the iPhone/iPod Touch and an elastic armband; simple. There is a clear plastic cover in the front of the device to protect the screen. This clear cover still gives you the ability to touch and interact with your Apple device. I have been using the “Couch to 5K” app [iTunes Link] for a while now. for the most part I have been holding my device while I walked/ran. However this case has changed that! Not only is it comfortable and lightweight, but it protects the iPhone Read More

Arrgh!
Waxhaw5 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a super idea but execution needs work. When the screen goes black (as it does after 30 seconds or so) the app runs in the background but the sounds are disabled, meaning that you miss the general point since you can't hear your "coach" tell you when to start walking or running! I used it today and essentially had to babysit by touching the screen frequently so it wouldn't go to black. Doesn't make for a quality workout when you spend the entire time staring at your phone.
10k?
Giants42 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Is there a Couch to 10k or even for marathons? If not you should make one for people that finish this app.
Great!
Uncle Jubba 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Ran my first workout today and it worked well.
Great if you are watching the screen the whole time
Mundra 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
the commands to run do not work the entire time and it doesn't tell you to run when your music is playing
Best app I've bought so far.
NewJogger 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I'm 30 & haven't worked out much for 10 years. I've tried to pick up running, but I always push myself too hard or too little when I start, leading me to give up before establishing a rhythm. This app has helped me run just hard enough to provide a good workout, but not too much so that I get burned out. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to get in shape.
App is awesome!
iChadmanRants 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
My friend and I use this As a workout tool. Only thing missing is GPS to track distance/location!
"Lawsuit invitingly" loud sirens
Davshirley 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Those ear piercing sirens have to go. Great, your legs and heart are in shape but you are deaf. At least put a volume control on it.
Pretty much perfect
crips ahoy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've never been a good runner but I have tried numerous times. I had heard great things about couch to 5k and this app looked good. This app IS good. I do wish there were options other than sirens but they aren't that bad. Volume control on the sirens would be an improvement. Just remember to turn the screenlock off and turn your music on before you start. This app has really helped me improve my running. I hope there's a 10k version coming soon!!
Great app
Pinkpirates 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
As someone who has run 5ks in the past, this app is a wonderful training tool!!! Easy to use and a great motivator! Others have written that the sirens are way too loud. They are only as loud as the volume in your headphones. I love the sirens :) You gotta get this app!!!
Great app
Lizzie230 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I don't understand all of these complaints because I'm not experiencing any of those problems. The app works great
Excellent App
Midiexpert 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
After using this for 3 weeks now, I am very pleased with this app. It has helped me get started running again after many years of being a couch potato, and I like the structure of it, because I tend to overdo workouts in the beginning and eventually get hurt or quit. I like the way it prompts you while you listen to music, so it keeps me energized with my workout music while getting me to keep working out. I've had no real problems at all with the app, and I appreciate the stretching diagrams, although they could be a bit bigger or integrated into the voice prompts (this is a very minor quibble, not even that important). All in all, great job. My request? Build a similar app that takes up where this leaves off, perhaps leading to 10K runs.
Great app
runmom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I love this application. First time was tough- I wasn't used to running/jobbing. Just finished week one and can't wait to start week two. Love the stretches that it shows too! I currently use on treadmill, but will be doing outside soon. Love that I can listen to my music and even when it sleeps the alarm still goes off to tell me to switch over.
Outstanding in every way!
TheShackMan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I am in to week 3 and loving this app. It's just what it says it is. I have tried a number of methods to get my butt off the couch and this has done it. The workouts seem to know "me" - pushes my limits without killing me. I've signed up for a couple of 5ks later this year as incentive. I've had a few glitches, like the sounds not playing initially. But not a big deal. One suggestion would be a voice prompt for the current workout ("week 2 workout 1"). I peeked ahead and forgot to set it back and nearly died running until the prompt before I realized what happened! I have found the sirens to be loud, but not too loud. Love that it tracks when you complete each workout. Thank you for this app! I too want to request a 5k to 10k app!
I highly recommend this app
Just Swim 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
My wife started on the C25K about a month ago and really loved the program. So much she talked me into doing it (err... Just Swim... and Run?). For her it was a pain keeping track what time interval she was on, etc., until she found a few Podcasts that covered beeped. I was not a fan of the offerings, so I went looking for an app and came across this one. I only have completed the second workout of the first week, but I am very happy.
Excellent
Reref 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The best app. Nobody should getting it. I don't get the other complaint. Works with music and sound on my itouch is on full blast and NO compaints at all. 5 star app GET IT. Wish a 10k will come when I'm done with the 5k! Love it!
Makes it easy to start running!
thejokell 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I haven't run a 5k in over a year, so I bought this app to start up again. It's been fantastic so far. No issues running it with Nike+ in the background.
Sweet and Simple
herbdiva 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
What more could you want? Straight and to the point. The "sirens" aren't bothersome at all. This does just what I want it to do.
Awesome sauce!
Lyrapuppy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app is seriously sweet. I've had no problems keeping up with it and have had hardly any after workout aches. But don't listen to your music at top volume! The prompt warning you to run or walk is much louder than your music Would seriously pay for a 5k to 10k app!
Just What I Was Looking For!
FifthFox 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I hadn't run in quite a while (I hike a lot though) and wanted to do more cardio training. Distance was no problem, but not at any kind of running speed. I read an article about interval training, and I thought "that would make a great app." So I looked for one, and found Couchto5K. I'm 43 and had thought I could never get back to running (I had tried but ended up queasy and out of breath). I'm on week 4, and though I may have to go back and repeat this week, I am definitely making progress. Sweating? Yes. Constantly gasping for breath? No. The audio appears to be a bit too quiet on my iPod Touch 1G with any but very calm music. I may need to repeat the whole sequence with emphasis on increasing speed. User will need to find a starting pace that works for them on week one and then stick to that pace (focus on heartrate not speed). Could use some refinement, but this app may just be a life-changing experience for me.
Perfect for getting me off the couch
foresmac 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Couch to 5K is a great implementation of the Couch to 5K training program for iPhone OS. Nice little additions like the vibration when sound is turned off, the "halfway point" notification, and stretching guide really add to the basic functionality. The check-off after each session also makes Couch to 5K like a game—and encourages me to keep with the program to "beat" the game.
Great training tool for beginners
cougarfan75 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've been using this for over a week now and I am noticing a difference in my endurance. I'll be back to finish my review after 9 weeks. So far it's everything it's promised to be.
A great way to start running
Brucesmith79 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I couldn't run before this program. As long as you stick to it and follow the ques, you'll be running in no time.
Just what I was looking for
AnomieX 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I was about to break down and learn how to program apps just to create one like this. But no need, great jobs guys. It does exactly what I need it to do.
Solid application
BigBrass111 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Simple and clean - it got a fat guy like me off the couch. You will complete each session and this software is simple to follow so put on some music and follow each step. You will be better for it.
I haven't jogged in years
Mauizzz 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This app got me out of bed in the morning. I haven't jogged in years! How about an app to train for a 1st time marathon?
Great App
River Styx 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Exactly what I needed to get me going after all these years. Keeps you honest in your workouts, wish Nike+ had of thought of it but hey $2 and I have it now
Good but useless
faubelgobble 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I loved this app until I found the RunKeeperPro. You can do all the same training and much much more. Same great voice prompts as Couch to 5k too. But if don't have the iphone gps, this is great app.
Finally
hollerbackatya 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This is a great app. Love the interface. I have always hated fussing with my watch and setting the intervals every time you changed levels on couch to 5k. Now I don't even need a watch. This is just the perfect app for this running program.
I love it!!
princess_m 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I have been using this for three weeks and it is great. It has gradually increased my strength and endurance without ever leaving me feeling like it is too hard. I am fat and out of shape and it has been 15 years since I last tried to run, now I am losing weight and feeling strong. I especially like that I can do a particular day over again if I don't feel ready to bump up.
Everybody needs this!
Not a running lover... 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I have NEVER run a 5k, or let's be honest, a mile. This app gets you motivated. I hate running and I can do this. The program is every other day and only half an hour. I'm moving through week three right now and am noticing more endurance from week one when running for one minute almost killed me. Each week is a new regimen; just when your comfortable and thinking that "this isn't that bad," you push the envelope a little bit more, but definitely not in a bad way. It's very motivating to use with Nike+ and hear that you beat your mile time (when it happens). My favorite part is knowing that the next time I can cut a few more seconds off my mile time. GREAT APP!!!! UPDATE: I'm on week six and loooving this app. Never in my life have I looked forward to the running days more! I'm always like 'i'll never make that," and when I do it's a great feeling! UBER UPDATE: Tonight was my last night of the program! I'm running a 5k this weekend. Not quite at a ten minute mile yet (11:30) but can run 3 straight miles now! It is also worth mentioning that i weigh 314.4 lbs. If i can do it, ANYBODY can!!!!
great
kvanh 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
really helps you keep track of your progress on the couch to 5k plan, both the plan overall and during the actual workout.
Love it!
gsdfmly 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Love it!!! I am not a runner, yet, and I wanted to run a 5k. I am active, but didn't really know how to train for the 5k, this is my solution. I am on week 4 and have found it very easy to use, I can run and it tells me how to progress through my workout! Amazing!!
At last! my personal trainer
G )))) 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I have tried many times to enjoy jogging without success. I've always felt that I needed someone to push me. Couch to 5k does that. It also helps that I have found great podcasts, but this little app makes running less painful.
Thanks!!!
Kijnek1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
This app has helped me to really enjoy running. It has helped me to stick with a program that helps me to reach goals and I'm psyched that I'm getting in shape and really feeling good about my progress. This is coming from a guy that has never ran before. Thanks for such a great app!!!
It worked!
blackhawkmath 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I ran my first ever 5K race at 47 years old using this program. I took just 8 weeks instead of 9, and I got a time of just over thirty minutes. It works with Nike+, you just have to make sure you turn on Nike+ first, and to "Basic Workout". Thanks to the developers, I lost ten pounds and feel in better shape. Now if I could only control my eating better...
Best $2 I've spent ever in Apple Store
enature 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I am on my 5th week. While no application can make you run, Coach 5K is exactly that last drop that can make a difference between sticking to running or abandoning it after the first week. It's my personal couch. The program nicely complements Nike +, which runs on iPhone in background. Nike + is a delayed couch, it collects data during the run and then displays later online. And Couch 5K is right there with me when I run to give me a balanced blend of walking and running for steady progress. This, hands down, is the most benefitial $2 I spent in Apple Store. Looking forward to Couch 10K.
