Calendar16 Tue, 02 Mar 2010 11:48:37 UTC +00:00
Read More
"Cry Translator" App Translates Babies' Screams

I don't have any way of testing this myself, but it's not April 1 so I'm going to assume it's legit. Wired Gadget Lab today put up a feature on Biloop Technologic's "Cry Translator" app, which supposedly listens to the pitch, volume, tone and inflection of a child's cries and analyzes it to determine if the child is in one of five states: hungry, sleepy, stressed, annoyed or bored. The app seems ready-made for ridicule (really? you need "an app for that?" really? consider a dog instead), though Wired makes a reasonable point: the app is of value to both new parents and caregivers - like babysitters - who haven't had experience in interpreting the cries of an infant. The developer, Biloop Technologic, claims that clinical tests have proven the app to be accurate 96% of the time. A spokesperson, Lori McKnight, said that the sounds a baby makes are innate Read More

The Baby Won’t Stop Yelling? There Is An App For That!

For those of you who still believe that there is a scientific way to interpret babies then you should give a look at Biloop Technologic’s new app. Cry translator is a voice analyzer that interprets babies’ cries. By pointing your iPhone’s microphone to the kid it will provide you with feedback as to what he wants. It seems like Biloop has done some serious investigating on the topic as the possible interpretations are hungry, sleepy, annoyed, stressed or bored. They also feel very strongly about their app, here is what they announce : According to clinical research conducted in a pediatric hospital in Spain, 96% of babies ceased crying after applying the suggestions displayed by the Cry Translator®. The 4% of cases that did not respond to the suggestions, may have been affected by external noise or issues not related to the five types of crying the Cry Translator deciphers. It’s Read More
Why is baby crying? This app translates

Much like Stanza identifies songs, Cry Translator identifies cries. In the classic Simpsons episode "Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?", Homer's long-lost brother Herb invents a baby translator. The baby cries, the machine announces its meaning (in Danny DeVito's inimitable voice) in plain English. Seventeen years later, there's an app for that. Cry Translator promises to identify the "five distinct cries" made by infants. In other words, you no longer have to wonder if your ankle-biter is tired, hungry, mad, stressed, or just bored. It's like Stanza for crybabies. My first reaction: That's cheating! My second reaction: Why wasn't this around nine years ago when I needed it? And finally: No way does this actually work. Unfortunately, I'm fresh out of babies on which to test it. So I'll throw this out to anyone willing to invest $9.99 on the promise of easier parenting. Put the app to the test, then Read More
