Remember The Fly? That's the one where Jeff Goldblum tries to teleport but instead gets his genes all mixed up with a fly. "[T]he Telepod computer, confused by the presence of two separate life-forms in the sending pod, merged him with the fly at the molecular-genetic level." Look at Lion/Mountain Lion and iOS; it's easy to see that the two operating systems are growing closer together, starting to converge. If you're willing to put on your crazy hat (tinfoil is optional), you might consider the following thought experiment. What if Apple consolidates the two into a dual-mode OS that supports both mobile and desktop use? Developers have seen OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion pick up numerous mobile features like Game Center, Reminders, and Notification Center. Apple is implementing an iOS-like sandboxing approach to application development with high levels of permission requirements. Apple is integrating share sheets (a UI metaphor that helps Read More
Appigo Notebook 2.0 for iPhone and iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 03 Feb 2012 20:02:33 UTC +00:00
Appigo’s Notebook is one of the first purchases I made on my iPhone 2G in 2008, and so it comes as a pleasant surprise that Notebook 2.0 has been released as a free update. The two major features of this update are a switch to the plain text (.txt) format for notes and very flexible Dropbox integration – both of which combine to make the notes you create on the iPhone or iPad versions of Notebook universally accessible. Of course, there are already a number of apps out there (Notesy, WriteRoom, Elements, etc.) that work beautifully with plain text files and sync with Dropbox, so what does Notebook really bring to the table? [Warning: Notebook turns out to be one of those apps that likes to rename your files for you if they use any characters deemed invalid by Windows. So if you keep a lot of text files with the Read More
Favorite Fifty: 148Apps Best Apps of 2011: 16 – 25
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Dec 2011 14:04:23 UTC +00:00
By Rob LeFebvre on December 27th, 2011 As 2011 winds down to a close, 148Apps takes a look back at some of the finest apps released this past year. In what was another fantastic year in the world of iOS apps & games, we are here to bring you the fifty titles that we, the staff of 148Apps, thought were the best of the year. Here are the app titles 16 – 25 in our Best Apps of 2011: iMovie- Video editing on the iPhone is revolutionary enough, but the extra screen space on the iPad makes this activity truly useful. Making movies is fun again, thanks in no small part to Apple’s attention to detail in this flagship app. $4.99 Released: 2010-06-24 :: Category: Photography Facebook – The wait was long for the iPad version but between its iconic look and intuitive menus systems, the official Facebook Universal app renders Read More
If writing on your iPad makes you go mad over it? What you are looking at is simplicity. Daedalus Touch is one such simple to use app that makes writing or editing document on the iPad a cinch with its simple text editor, simple design and intuitive user interface. For the first time you open Daedalus Touch, you may be wondering about the different layout and file management used in the app. But with the nice tutorial that is available when you first start the app, beginners can quickly get a hang of all the available features and controls. Daedalus Touch gives up the concept of document files and folders, rather it work gives your content an even natural look with stack view which is what we see when dealing with a bunch of papers in our day to day life. Similar to our natural motion of swiping or turning pages Read More
Daedalus Touch, the Dropbox text editor that I reviewed back in May, received a pretty major update earlier this week. The release notes should adequately describe most of the changes, but here are some of my favourite new features (and why I think they’re so awesome): Better synchronization – Daedalus Touch is capable of two way syncing with Dropbox and the soon-to-be obsolete MobileMe, but it is only in this latest version that the syncing has become good enough to be really usable . Uploads and downloads happen faster, and Daedalus Touch has become intelligent enough to sort out most file conflicts on its own. Customizable keyboard – Daedalus Touch did launch with its own extended keyboard , but I never really found the specialized keys all that useful for the kind of writing that I do. The developers have taken note of that and you are now free choose which Read More
Video App Demo: Daedalus Touch
Calendar16 Tue, 02 Aug 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Daedalus Touch is a text editor designed for iPad and engineered to be as simple and clutter-free as possible. From what I saw, it succeeds admirably. Granted, there are lots of text editors on the App Store, but Daedalus offers a clean interface with a few nice features, like modeless search. In modeless search you can search at any time across all documents and the presentation makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Of course, the best way to see this is to see it in action, so check out the video below to see Daedalus in action. Read More

iPad Only App $3.99 Our Review By Jennifer Allen on June 20th, 2011 Rating: :: PURE Daedalus Touch is a purist and minimalist's dream, providing straight to the point text editing. Developer: Price: $3.99 Version Reviewed: 1.0.3 Device Reviewed On: iPad 2 iPhone Integration Rating: User Interface Rating: Re-use Value Rating: Overall Rating: Simplicity is sometimes all that’s ever needed in an app, especially one that facilitates creativity. Daedalus Touch is one such app. While other text editors like to flood the user with a flurry of options and buttons, Daedalus Touch cuts it all back to the bare minimums ensuring that there are no distractions. It works pretty well too. Anyone with writer’s block knows how easy it is to be easily distracted or spend far too long fiddling around with the font when really they should just be getting on with the matter at hand. Daedalus Touch simply provides Read More

Review: Daedalus Touch for iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 31 May 2011 16:22:29 UTC +00:00
This piece is going to fulfill your meta quota of the day because I’m typing this review of Daedalus Touch from right within Daedalus Touch (incredibly trippy, I know). But before I go on, let me quickly get this disclaimer out of the way: Yes, this is another one of those iPad writing apps and yes, its interface is minimal like those of so many others. It does sync manually with Dropbox and MobileMe and it does allow you to tap in the margins to move the insertion point easily through your text. However, that’s probably where Daedalus’ similarity to most other writing apps ends. In fact, if I had to find an app with which to compare Daedalus, it would be Reeder, my favourite RSS reader on the iPad. Both Reeder and Daedalus are navigated by gestures and swipes, and both tend to favour metaphors for interfaces. Instead of folders, Daedalus Read More

Kind of buggy - Not Anymore

Every time I go to rename a new stack to start work, it crashes. Beautiful app, maybe better off waiting until the bugs are worked out.UPDATE: the update fixed the crashing problem. App works great now. I'm quite happy with it.
Synopsis: Coverflow and Stacks interface meets notepad, but with deep UX.

Update: much, much better, great responsible devs with progressive updates, 5 stars for that support. Daedalus is my go to brain dump; gotta love the UX of text heaven.2011-05-26 Thu updated Daedalus to v1.02 still no crashes but got a dialog "Cannot Open Page" NSURLErrorDomain error -999 when opening the built in browser 2011-05-25 Wed updated Daedalus to v1.01 and so far no more crashes, did a reset just before install as a precaution. Updated to 5 stars, right now Daedalus is a pleasure to use. Developer has a forum and responsive to emails. 2011-05-21 Sat old v1 reviewSo the Dvorak waltz and slick UX demo got the best of me and I fell for a version 1 of this next generation text editor. The premise is simple. So Apple UX like: type text and keep the organizing metaphor of pages and stacks. Why hasn't anyone thought of that? The 'Winning'-est method for my messy mind of loosely tended pieces and bits of ephemera would be something like this: capture, repeat. The idea is one thing, but execution is another. Will Daedalus Touch (DT) meet the challenge? The app provides a great tutorial even for a user experience so familiar to Mac users: scroll through pages with left and right swipes, pinch to move through page and stack levels. Edit, edit, edit in between.Uhhh, movement from page to stack is just so slick that the interface doesn't distract you with clutter. There are quiet unobtrustive little, but enormous refreshing features throughout DT that aid the writer.Fine cursor movement: marking a point in the text and holding down that position moves the cursor one character at a time to that point and will accelerate to movement by word. Tap and tap and hold brings the usual magnifier that most text editors use.SEARCH: in your face right at the tip of the page. Your query is highlighted in yellow in page view. The real brilliance shines, however in the stack where mother of holies, your results are highlight by word and page. You gotta see it to believe it.Text stats are posted in realtime at the top menu bar. Web lookup: a built in browser allows you to lookup words or ideas from the web and you can add more sites besides the default Google, Wikipedia or dict.ccThemes: change to 3 fonts or backgrounds, minimalist and paper like, just like we like them.Autocorrection and TextExpander support: just in case you need to add a hard coded snippet or date time stamp Nice to have: Maybe a wider margin? Er, for the text.Maybe a different icon or method to delete a sheet?Deleting a page is found under the sharing icon or at least what most apps use to indicate export or share.Developers note that may be done differently in an update.Hey, I'm getting ancient, can we get an option to make the font size BIGGER? Encryption by note or app password would be shooting for the stars, but other apps like TrunkNotes has this. What's the end result: Daedalus Touch has been a pleasure to write this review with save for a couple of crashes, this is the text editor to beat at a 4 buck sale. FYI I also have reviewed: SoundPaper, TrunkNotes, default Notes, WriteRoom, iA Writer, MobileOrg, Nebulous, Textastic, ThinkBook

Finally a writing app that works the way I think. I am really enjoying the way you guys focused on the functionality of the app. While I won't be using the app for any Great American Novel, it will help me with Project Related work I tackle on a day to day basis. You guys really thought about things in the right way for Daedalus. I really love the Stacks metaphor, I love your choice of typography and I love that you've made it easy to sync and export your content. Writing is now a pleasure. Looking forward to growing with the app. Congrats on a winning writing masterpiece.

Bought this app yesterday, and I can't even count the number of times it has crashed. If you are working on anything important (i.e. for money) don't use this app or you might lose everything you've written with it. It not only crashes but there have been times when using Dropbox when it refuses to allow you to sync. Where do I get a refund? Apple, are you listening?P.S.I had to give it one star in order to submit this review. Frankly, it doesn't even deserve one star.
