Latest 'Dark Meadow' Update Is Basically A Reset
Calendar16 Tue, 10 Apr 2012 14:40:10 UTC +00:00
Today's Dark Meadow [$5.99] update smells like damage control, but that's not a bad thing for the folks expecting the premium title to stay premium. With the latest update, all the costs of weapons and amulets have been converted back into gold from Sun Coins, robbing the incentive to buy the weapons with real-world currency. Also, creator Phosphor Games has tweaked loot drops to "be more generous" and has tooled around with health drops. As explained on our message board, this is a permanent shift for the app. Back in March, Phosphor caught wind that free-to-play was The New Thing and planned to update its offering with F2P mechanics. Fans weren't pleased, and so Phosphor decided to release a free version of the game instead. Oddly, it then decided to stick all of those elements into the paid one anyway, which didn't make people happy, either. But, hey, now the app Read More
The Dark Meadow is now available in a new free-to-play version as well as its standard premium version. Phosphor Games’ visually-stunning, Unreal Engine-powered game The Dark Meadow has gotten a new free-to-play version, Dark Meadow: The Pact. This is the same game as the full Dark Meadow released last October, but now designed to be free-to-play, with gold and Sun coins available for in-app purchase, that can be spent on equipment, health kits, and bombs. Originally, the full version of the game was going to just transition from its current $5.99 price to free-to-play, but there was user backlash to this move. However, the plan was apparently for those who had purchased the game to get the Premium pack of items, which disables ads, grants 5 health kits, 13 bombs, 15,000 gold, 150 Sun coins, and disables ads for free. Now, the two versions are split, with the Premium pack gifted Read More

Games for the weekend: Dark Meadow
Calendar16 Fri, 25 Nov 2011 20:00:01 UTC +00:00
Games for the Weekend is a weekly feature aimed at helping you avoid doing something constructive with your downtime. Each Friday we’ll be recommending a game for Mac, iPhone or iPad that we think is awesome enough to keep you busy until Monday, at least. One of the first computer games I ever played at home was Zork.  It was a text-based game that guided the player through a narrative of obstacles and challenges. Then came PC/Mac games like Myst and more recently Silent Hill, a visually stunning variation on the same storytelling theme that also included the mouse and visuals. Now, there’s on iOS (on sale for $0.99, normally $5.99). With Dark Meadow, the genre of story-based games heads to a new level with touch controls. The graphics are visually stunning, and there’s something about actually holding the whole game in your hand that somehow psychologically connects you more personally to the story. Read More

Dark Meadow
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Nov 2011 20:22:40 UTC +00:00
Dark Meadow is a first-person game for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) that mixes RPG and action elements. The app starts with you, the protagonist, waking up in a dilapidated hospital. Your character is unsure of how he got there, and is warned of a witch who roams the halls. From there, your quest begins. You start exploring the hospital, fighting different monsters and piecing together clues to figure out what is going on. Read on to learn more about how it holds up. Let’s start with the controls. Given the fact that Dark Meadow is a first-person experience on a touch device, I was a little weary. I’ve play FPS games on both iOS and Android devices that were simply unplayable. They use touch buttons and touch control sticks that just don’t work well because you can’t actually feel them. I was relieved to find out that Dark Meadow is Read More
The Top Ten Scariest iOS Games of All Time
Calendar16 Mon, 31 Oct 2011 20:37:35 UTC +00:00
It's Halloween night, and while you're sitting on the couch waiting for trick-or-treaters to show, why not curl up with one of these terrifying iOS games? A lot of games feature friendly monsters and zombies, but we've picked our favorite creepy, dark, and freaky iPhone and iPad games to make your evening a little scarier. 10. Contract Killer: Zombies Glu's latest freemium first-person sniper game has a few notable improvements over Contract Killer. For one, you're sniping undead zombies instead of mafioso, and two, the gore factor is upped in a big way. Some missions even have you defending a human ally while they're surrounded by zombies-- a scary position to be in. Our Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a bloody shooter with busty undead blondes and shotgun fun, how can you say no? 9. Dead Escape In this adventure game, you have to combine items to puzzle your way Read More
'The Dark Meadow' Sees Halloween Price Reduction, Update
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Oct 2011 16:00:15 UTC +00:00
'Tis the season for Halloween-themed updates, and you betcha' that Phosphor Games decided to celebrate the spookiest of days with a free update to its horror game, The Dark Meadow [$2.99]. The biggest game-changing tweak we've seen is the increased level cap, which has been bumped to 50 from its previous high of 40. This update also packs in optimization for the iPhone 4S, a few more save slots, some notable bug fixes, a new game+ mode, and lowered creature spawning inside the level "Montclair Hospital." Oh! And the game is now cheaper. Until October 31, you'll be able to grab it at $2.99 instead of its premium-ish price of $5.99. That's quite a savings for a game we liked a lot. You can read our criticisms and praise in our full review right here. Just for fun, here's a, uh… decidedly uncreepy shot of the game. Chew on this: The Read More
Daily iPhone App: Dark Meadow
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Oct 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
Dark Meadow isn't really my kind of app -- it's a little too scary for my tastes, and I tend to gravitate away from scary games in general. But we did mention it as a quality app in our recent Halloween roundup, and a new update for the app increases the game's level cap, adds a New Game+ option so you can go back into the fray after completing the game for the first time, and optimizes the game for iPhone 4S users. The game is sort of an RPG, though it's basically just an excuse for you to explore the location and story of a mysterious hospital, all rendered in beautiful Unreal Engine 3 graphics. As you can see above, the game looks great, All of your actions are gesture-based, sort of like Infinity Blade. The game's probably not all that scary for you hardcore game players, but I hear Read More
Spooky fun: iOS apps for Halloween
Calendar16 Fri, 21 Oct 2011 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
I love Halloween. As kids we anticipated the night we'd canvas the neighborhood in plastic costumes, visiting house after house. Especially that one crazy lady who dressed as a witch and tried her best to scare us. We had fun, but we didn't have iPhones. Today a slew of digital treats lurk inside the App Store. Here's a selection of our favorites. There are prerequisites to Halloween fun. You've got to choose a costume, carve a pumpkin and set a creepy mood. Here are some apps to get you started (all prices are USD). Costume Decider (Free) Can't decide on a costume? Let your iPhone help. This app from GS Design features two "wheels" for you to spin; one features adjectives such as "super" and "Vulcan" while the other offers nouns like "nurse" or "granny." The combination of Epic Games’ Unreal Technology and the iOS platform has been a match made in heaven ever since we first caught a glimpse of it through a tech demo app called Epic Citadel, which dropped a jaw or two after its release. Then, Epic Games published Infinity Blade, which a year after release could easily be one game I don’t hesitate to recommend to any new iOS gamer. Now a new game has been released that uses the Unreal Technology that takes a lot of its inspiration from Infinity Blade, but it offers a completely different environment and intriguing story that will certainly keep you on your toes. The Dark Meadow starts off with the you waking up in a room in an abandoned hospital. You have no idea how you got there, but an old man in a wheelchair greets you once you get up. After a short introduction, Read More

This is such a great game! Solid piece of work! Beautiful graphics, eerie settings & the music is perfect. Only complaint I can find is what I had also read about on a review online-- You need to take the level ups after each fight outta the game. It takes away from the tone & feel when it pauses and shows ur stats like u were playing SF4 or something. Maybe just show ur power ups on the top of the screen or something. Other than that, solid game! Keep it up!
