My Favorite Little Features in Mac and iOS Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 23 May 2012 20:00:43 UTC +00:00
Andrew, the developer behind the fantastic Alfred productivity app on the Mac, posted a small peek at a new feature coming in v1.2.1: tapping shift to preview an item. The idea there is that it’s easy to navigate Alfred with the up and down arrow keys by using the index and middle fingers, whilst the ring finger can quickly tap shift to preview files as needed. The feature is dead simple and I admire how transparent Andrew is about how he makes Alfred both comfortable and easy to use. Andrew’s post also got me thinking about a few other examples of apps that win some major usability points: I simply meant for this post to be a quick thumbs-up to Andrew on the excellent Alfred development we’ve been seeing, but there are so many great little touches in my favourite Mac and iOS apps that I couldn’t just stop there. Why the iPad Works for Writing
Calendar16 Wed, 16 May 2012 15:02:00 UTC +00:00
When the first iPad launched in 2010, critics were quick to lampoon the device for being geared too heavily toward content consumption. The criticisms weren't entirely without merit, especially considering that the first-generation iPad didn't even have a camera, and external media slots are still nowhere to be found.  Over time, the iPad has evolved into something that's much more creation-friendly. It still doesn't compare to a desktop or laptop computer for many things, but it's great for quite a few others. Writing is one of them.  I happen to write things for a living, but the practice is far from limited to those who earn a paycheck by doing it. Some of us just enjoy emptying the thoughts from our heads, while many others have a professional obligation to be good at communicating with words. Whatever one's purpose - journaling, drafting stories or composing work-related documents - the iPad is Read More

It's Mother's Day here in the US and in a handful of other countries around the world. To celebrate this holiday, I've compiled a list of five outstanding apps that are perfect for all the iPhone-toting mothers out there. These titles will help Mom get organized, share memorable moments and have some fun. If you have any suggestions not on this list, please add them in the comments. Apple showcases apps ready for the retina iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:15:32 UTC +00:00
Apple wants you to enjoy that brand new retina iPad and has compiled a list of apps that are ready for the high-resolution display. It includes many of the big-name apps that were quick to get their app updated after Apple’s iPad announcement last week. The list includes entertainment apps, productivity apps, games, and more. Kelly spent the last three years covering mobile technology at places like BGR, Gizmodo and The Unofficial Apple Weblog. Before writing, she spent a few years working with and teaching others how to use Adobe Flash and Macromedia Director. Even earlier than that, she spent six years working on her Ph.D in Microbiology. When she's not writing, she can be found fishing the lakes and hiking the mountains of Western Maine with her husband and children. Read More
Roundup of retina-ready apps for the new iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 13:45:00 UTC +00:00
It's iPad day and many of you are looking for the best Retina-capable apps to install on your new Apple tablet. Apple's got you covered with a section of the iTunes app store dedicated to apps updated to support the iPad's new retina display. Apple's list will get you started, but it isn't exhaustive and only includes major apps like Tweetbot and Evernote. There are many other retina-ready apps that are not being showcased by Apple. We won't be able to list every single retina app in the App Store, but we will cover some of our favorites below. If there are any that we have missed, please let us know in the comments! And here is the list from Apple: Read More

Apparently Walmart will be selling them in just a few short hours, well before Apple itself does tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, the first direct-to-consumer shipments should be hitting anytime now. Long story short, a lot of people are going to be getting the new Retina display iPad over the next several hours. Unsurprisingly, the Retina-ready apps are already flowing in. Day One ($1.99), the king of journaling apps on iOS, was updated once again late last week. The app icon has been given a very nice overhaul and looks fantastic on both the iPhone and iPad. The new icon is less reminiscent of a traditional journal, but the preservation of the white bookmark is a nice, classy nod to the app’s design roots. The general browsing experience in Day One has improved in this update, thanks to a new scrolling mechanic that allows you to navigate between entries once you reach the end of the screen. A quick pull at the top or bottom of a given entry will switch you to the next or previous one, making it much easier to simply meander through old memories. The new sound effects added to both the iPad and iPhone versions also help make the apps feel more responsive, or at the very least, Read More
Have you ever kept a journal or diary? For writers, it's almost a given that you're going to keep a personal log of what you do during each day, how you feel, or interesting things that might create that prize-winning book some day. For others, it's a way to keep track of health issues, emotions, relationships, the growth of a child or the decline of an aged parent. Day One (US$9.99 for Mac, $1.99 for iOS) is a well-designed and implemented journal app for Mac OS X and iOS. First, let me describe the Mac app. It's available through the Mac App Store and loads quickly. When launched, Day One recognizes whether or not you have Dropbox installed, and asks if you wish to use that service for syncing with the iOS app. Day One also supports iCloud for syncing -- it's easily enabled through the app preferences. As a video platform, Vimeo has always played second fiddle to YouTube. Yet, Vimeo does attract a more professional grade of videographer and often the contents of Vimeo are much more polished than the much uploaded to YouTube from millions of would-be Internet stars. Vimeo finally has a new app for iOS and Android and it is everything you would expect from the platform in terms of quality video and performance. Users can view videos, manage their accounts and upload all from one app. The Android version of Vimeo requires 2.3 Gingerbread or above. Producteev (Free - iOS, Android) Talk about cross-platform. Review: Day One, a Journal App for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Aug 2011 19:04:28 UTC +00:00
Day One is a handsome little app that encourages you to record all of your daily dealings inside of its cool blue interface. Granted, plenty of other apps already offer a similar digital journaling experience, but Day One takes it a step further by providing a standalone Mac app ($10) and a universal app for the iPhone and iPad ($2) so that you really can record your thoughts wherever and whenever the mood strikes you. Dropbox synchronization makes Day One’s multi-platform support even sweeter by letting you keep all of your thoughts flowing seamlessly. Entries tend to sync right as the app loads, as well as right after you finish editing an entry, so you never have to worry about the thoughts that you recorded on your iPhone not being available on your Mac. As far as I know, Day One is the first app of its kind that really Read More

Simple, clean and everywhere I want it
mountainboy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've tried several journals and tracking apps, and though each has it's merits, I was never satisfied and would soon lose interest in posting updates. A few things make day one different. First is the desktop app: having a simple menubar item to make quick posts is crucial. I've found that instead of longer entries, I am making several granular entries throughout the day. Second is dropbox sync: having my data on my phone and Mac in a portable format is wonderful, instant, and full of potential. Third: it's good looking and uncluttered, leaving room to post, and get back to living the lives that us journalers so willingly document. There is room for improvement. Like many others, I see search as being hugely important as we have more data. Tags, labels, or a means to group items will be equally important. It would be great if the iPhone app supported reminders as the desktop app does, particularly if reminders are in a schedule synchronized. Lastly, though the user interface is beautiful, there are some aspects of the experience and flow that would make using day one more efficient and simple, and I expect that these details will be improved as day one matures. I look forward to future updates, and to day one evolving both on my Mac and iOS devices.
A man's first Journal.
2turntables 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I resisted buying any other journal app (Mac or iOS) because none of them felt right. This app is extremely simple, with all the features you could NEED to document everyday thoughts, inspirations, & brainstorms. The look is very slick. It will coincide with your current & future iOS & Mac OS. Don't sleep any longer! Start building your brain database for future inquiring & endeavors.
Finally
RowB 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Been looking for a journaling app that works with Dropbox for a while. Love the fact I can keep the desktop and iPhone version of this app in sync as well. Simple & clean - works great.

jlewism 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thanks to this simplicity of this app I'm inspired to begin my personal journal again. Great design and focus. I cannot wait to sync with the Day One Mac app.
Love it
iMeadows 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Thank you for the password lock and landscape view!
Great update
Clemfam 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Thanks for the update. Good to have password and landscape, etc. Look forward to the Mac version update as well. I'm really enjoying this app!!
Waste of money
balddirtdog 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Too simple. What a joke if an app. It has the dropbox thingy and well that's about it. The Apple note pad does more. How about choices if fonts? Not with Day One. How about a search function? Not with Day One. How about a Mac app? Yep and it's almost $10. Meh. Next.
Exactly what I was looking for
MoabMan77 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is fast, simple and beautiful. At the end of a long day, the last thing I want to do is deal with a feature-heavy, clumsy app when I want to write a journal entry. Kudos to the developer for keeping it clean. This app is awesome!!!
Excellent/Simple
mdcosby 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Life should be as clutter free as this application. Looking forward to landscape mode.
Beautiful Simplicity
Pilateschick87 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I just created my first journal entry in decades. Your beautiful and simple app just invited me to write something. Let's see if I can turn this into a habit. Thanks for doing this!
Sweet and Simple
WilsonRS 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love how clean this app feels. It's simple without losing functionality. Syncing with Dropbox makes it even better. If you journal or are a serious note taker this app is a must have!
Great App
TIMMY Productions 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app helps me review my day. At night before I go to bed, I open this app and write a few lines about something that happened that day that stood out to me. I don't write that much, just a small excerpt of the day. It's helpful though. I'm sure lots of new features will be coming, too.
Best app I have
Tech24073 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I have been looking for a quick and easy way to keep "day to day" notes and history. This app is PERFECT. When Ever I add anything on the desktop version, the iPad is updated through DropBox in seconds. Easy interface, VERY simple and easy "basic" information with out the over complication. By far my favorite app. If you need an easy, simple way to track things, like phone logs, employee sick calls, contact logs, anything it is great! The ONLY thing that would be helpful, is to be able use tags, so I could sort by category. This is no way hinders the current usefulness, but would put this app over the top.
Awesome
Veryy nice! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Simply Amazing!
Simple Excellence
Peytwan 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Very happy with this app, especially with the passcode added. (I would like to see encryption as a next step though.) It's simple and gets out of your way for journaling. The syncing with Dropbox makes me confident that if my phone died, my journal would not die with it. One odd request for the developer is to add optional geotagging. Would be cool to have that when traveling.
Cool
earthbrown8 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Very cool app for journaling on iPhone. Works great with iPhone 4 and now new passcode update I can really use it. Links to drop box. Recommend this one.
Beautiful journaling app
jptravis4 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Simplicity is a virtue. Great app for clutter-free journaling. Seamless cloud sync with the equally great Mac client. Desperately needs an iPad companion to make it perfect, but supposedly that's on the way.
Simple it is
SchrockFamily 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I guess my bigger dissappointment is that there are other apps (free) that do more that this. It would be nice to be able to have folders. I know it goes by dates, and that is a highlight of this app. For $10.98 (including the desktop app), I guess I expected more. Syncing with the desktop app is useful but that is all that I can see paying money for. My concern is that there are cheaper versions that work just as well. Things that would make it worth the money: - The ability to use folders - The ability to use italics, bold and underline. - Some way to use "tab" on the iPhone - The ability to change Font colors. And whatever else you would deem worthy. :-) If the first two on the list are added, I will be glad to change this to five stars.
Too Simple
alte weisen 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
No search function?
Wait for promised updates before buying...
Do It Now 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The ugly: A journal app without landscape mode and password security is like a television without a remote. Also missing is an iPad version. It feels like their apps were released prematurely. Hopefully these developers follow through quickly with their promises of delivering these indispensable features. Until then I would take their recommendation and wait before buying this journal app. The beautiful: this app has so much potential. The Mac version of will be brilliant when it gets: search ability, tags, and password protection. It syncs easily with its iPhone brethren and motivates me to finally keep a journal. We've been let down with other developers who promise coming features only to have them break their promises. Hopefully this developer promptly and regularly improves their apps.
Nice Interface, But Still a Bit Rough
dpaint4 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The visual styling of the app is a highlight; it's also very responsive. I was looking forward to the Dropbox functionality, but it's not currently working for me. Using my usual login that works with the official Dropbox app, Day One showers me with a never-ending stream of "unable to connect to Dropbox" errors, making me force-quit the app in order to use my iPod Touch again. I'll be waiting for updates that clean that part up.
Better than Mac Journal
IndigoBlu 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautiful interface and works great. Very easy to use for keeping personal journal.
Better than Mac Journal
IndigoBlu 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautiful interface and works great. Very easy to use for keeping personal journal. When they add landscape mode, I'll give it 5 stars.
One Improvement
bdtennessee 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
I would like to request the improvement for the journal to actually sync more often than the weekly or biweekly sync period. I think that it would be useful when using more than one device to be able to read back thorugh what has been journaled sooner than is allowed by the sync. I know that reading my entries sooner than the one week period allows me to see where I was at in the past and make judgements on if I have improved or not simply by reading my entires.
Don't install latest updates!!! Content loss, loss of cloud syncing
InRainyWeather 1.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
Finally got the darn thing to work via syncing issues with cloud, etc. although performance is about 60/40. I contacted the developer the first time who was helpful at first then so unpleasant (I was the only customer in nearly 1000 who had the particular issues I was describing. And I should "take it up with iTunes if I wanted a refund." I didn't/don't want a refund: I want your app to work, and that, sir, is your job. Look, if Apple makes you app of the week, hold your head up and live up to the honor. I'm submitting this review now because enough is enough: I just installed the updates for both iPhone & iPad & yes, but syncing across one device to another records a date and recognizes an entry, but it has no content. You'll see for example, you have 40 entries on iPhone & 40 on iPad, but only the device on which the entry was written has the content. In other words, this app is shooting blanks. Do NOT do the upgrade!!! Turning the device on & off & re-booting is the developer's answer to a fix. O-tay! Let me get ruby shoes and click my heels 3 times while I wait for Mr. Apple to appear back on my screen... Wishing... And waiting for you wizards behind the curtain. Who ARE you people? Stand behind your product, and stop dragging us all into your own personal Oz. That is, please.
Photo And voice entries
MrsD1124 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
I'm waiting on photos and I think it would be cool to have voice or video journal entries!!! I would love to dictate entries on the iPhone.
Photos Please!!!
MARCIO Baptista 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
App is great! Just missing the ability to include pictures that would make it a 5* app for sure...
Fantastic (as usual) :)
Caroline McMillan 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
Day one sets the bar (and sets it high) for journaling apps as far as I'm concerned. The new update is great. Although I do miss the "ping" sound that used to play whenever I inlocked my journal.
Great app, best journal app in app store
jefftk1 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
Simple and easy to use. iCloud makes it even better. The promised features that are on the way are a bonus and will keep it on top of the journal apps.
Awesome!!
Nrsczar 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
Great app.
Love it!!!
muzicismahlife! 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
It's a really great tool for the iPad or iPhone from jotting down some ideas to keep a journal of your life. I love how you can lock it in case it's private.
Very good
glo10 4.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
Love the ability to dictate my entries on the new iPad. Photos would make it great.
Beautifully simplistic UI
Brian Schroeder 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.7
This app is truly amazing. The user interface is so clean and simple. It's extremely easy to use. I love the sound effects that it makes when you tap any button or add new journal entries. I've tried several journaling apps and this is clearly the best. I find that I write down my thoughts more often because using the app is just so much fun. Five stars all the way!
