'Deadmans Run' Review – A Rough Racer
Calendar16 Mon, 21 May 2012 14:00:10 UTC +00:00
It seems as if ever since the iOS remake of [ $0.99 ] hit the scene over a year ago, we’ve had a resurgence of weapons-based racing titles gracing the platform. Deadmans Run [ $0.99 ] from Nightfall Interactive is another entry into the genre and attempts to model itself somewhat closely to Death Rally. While Deadmans Run does try to differentiate itself from the pack in some ways, you’re mostly left with a fairly average racer with controls that leave a bit to be desired. Deadmans Run offers a somewhat comprehensive campaign that has you racing across nine different levels across three “difficulty” levels, earning both cash and notoriety (essentially experience points). The cash is used to purchase permanent (engine, weapons, and armor) and temporary upgrades for your vehicles while the notoriety acts as a level-wall that restricts upgrades and car purchases until you've hit a certain level. Overall, the Read More

Remedy's 'Death Rally' is Free Again
Calendar16 Tue, 08 May 2012 17:00:10 UTC +00:00
Does the name ring a bell? They're the Finnish developers behind Alan Wake and Max Payne, but before all that, they released a top-down combat-centric MS-DOS Racer called Death Rally. (Oh, and, Max Payne [ $2.99 ] is also now available on the App Store, check out our review.) Anyway, a little over a year ago the greatly enhanced iOS remake of Death Rally hit the App Store. To create the game, Remedy partnered up with Mountain Sheep, who is likely best known around these parts for Minigore [$0.99 / $1.99 (HD)]. Minigore saw tons of updates, so, I'm not sure anyone was surprised when Death Rally got similar treatment. Since its initial release and our original review, they've added all sorts of unlockables, character tie-ins (such as a guest appearance from the one and only Duke Nukem) and even full online multiplayer. Yes, the game has been free before, and Read More
Death Rally 2.3 Brings the Duke to Multiplayer for Easter
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Apr 2012 15:30:59 UTC +00:00
Death Rally version 2.3 brings Duke Nukem to mulitplayer, Retina Display support to the new iPad, and discounted weapons, all in celebration of Easter! Remedy’s Death Rally is celebrating Easter with a semi-appropriate update, along with other features. To celebrate the holiday, Easter eggs providing battle modifiers are now spread throughout the game’s various multiplayer tracks. As well, daily play rewards have been added to this version 2.3 update, granting more free battle modifiers for the more consecutive days that a player plays. That’s not all! Did you buy the new iPad? Are you sick of seeing the game scaled from original iPad resolution? Be sick no more, as the game now is optimized for the iPad 3rd generation. A new Dukematch mode has been added to the multiplayer mode, adding a destruction derby arena where everyone has weapons, and all must try to take down the venerable Duke Nukem himself. Read More

The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More

Death Rally’s Campaign Goes Multiplayer
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Dec 2011 15:30:50 UTC +00:00
By Blake Grundman on December 21st, 2011 Ladies and gentlemen, start your vehicles of destruction! Fans of the combat racing game Death Rally already know that this is truly the game that keeps on giving.  After snagging tons of acclaim upon release, the title has seen a remarkable SEVEN free updates.  Move over Rovio, because Remedy Entertainment is gunning for the crown of best fan service. Here is a laundry list of some of the new features included in this well timed holiday present: Easily the most remarkable piece of this announcement is the addition of a complete campaign focused entirely on multiplayer content.  This kind of support, especially in the arena of multiplayer gaming, is rarely seen this far after a launch.  Plus, all of the added features such as the new ranking system and battle modifiers show an added dedication to keeping the game as balanced as possible. Racing games have long been one of the most successful genres for the iPhone. The motion of tilting the device left and right makes for a great simulation of a steering wheel. Of course, the App Store is home to more than just traditional racing games – there are plenty of titles that stretch the limits of the genre, and introduce new ways to race. Here are 10 of the best racing games for iOS. Read More
Death Rally gets big multiplayer update
Calendar16 Fri, 21 Oct 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Death Rally is a great iOS title from Remedy Entertainment, the makers of the Alan Wake game for the Xbox 360 a little while back. (Quick disclaimer: I, Mike Schramm, actually have a cameo in the game, for turning in a solid time at a press event. But I wasn't paid at all for my appearance, and I don't make anything from sales of the game. I legitimately think it's a great title, though.) The game has just gotten a big update that adds something players might be surprised by: multiplayer. Up to four people can now load up the game, and race against each other using the Shrieker car, on up to six different maps, including Eureka, which was previously only available via in-app purchase. The update also adds a new weapon, the flamethrower, available from an in-app purchase reward pack, as well as a new paint job for one Read More
Ten iOS Games for Nintendo Fans, Part Two
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jul 2011 16:03:36 UTC +00:00
We continue our countdown of ten iOS apps which bear a considerable similarity to some of Nintendo’s famous titles, seeing as the company isn’t planning on releasing the real things any time soon!  You can find Part One of the list here, and the final five below: Also known as Star Fox, this shooter was one of the first console titles to make good use of 3D filled polygon graphics.  Star Battalion and Galaxy on Fire 2 are your best bets for something similar on the iPhone, but they don’t quite capture the wonderful simplicity of Star Wing.  Still, they’re both brilliant games on their own, so you won’t regret buying either. Want Donkey Kong? Um… Another Nintendo property which needs no introduction, but desperately needs a presence in the App Store.  The choice is limited here, with Elevators being a rough-looking homage and um, that’s about it.  A clone named Read More

App Review: Death Rally
Calendar16 Tue, 31 May 2011 02:39:01 UTC +00:00
posted by Joe Rossignol on Monday, May 30, 2011 at 7:39 pm.   Remedy Entertainment may not sound like a familiar company to most people, but they sounded familiar to me for some odd reason. Based in Finland, and having fifteen years of game development under their belt, Remedy decided to venture into the iOS game market with their first ever iOS game called Death Rally. Death Rally was originally developed in 1996 by Remedy for the PC platform. Remedy decided to update the game for the current age and release it for the iPhone. Death Rally is a racing game, so it has to compete with much bigger titles like Need for Speed, Real Racing, Asphalt, and other huge hits from much bigger companies. Not knowing if their games were quality, I went in and made a one dollar investment to see what it was like. Death Rally offers exciting Read More

Quick Look: Death Rally for iPhone and iPad
Calendar16 Sat, 14 May 2011 19:59:43 UTC +00:00
Death Rally (normally $2.99, currently $0.99) looks to be exactly what I was looking for this weekend. It’s a lighthearted six-car rally racer with heavy duty weaponry, which gives me two ways to get into pole position: through actual racing or by punching bullet-shaped holes into enemy cars until they’re nothing more than smoking slag. There is a back story to this crazy racing game, and here it is: you’re an outlaw who is being forced to participate in Death Rally to lure a bigger, badder outlaw into the open. Since you’re a relatively small fish, you’ll start out with a crappy car and nothing more than an automatic (read: weak-ass) machine gun mounted to your side. It is possible to kill with this weapon, but it’s so slow and requires such precision that you’re actually better off racing (hah!). I thought that was crap, so I spent the first few Read More
Three great iOS games got big updates this week. First up, the excellent and popular pirate simulator Plunderland got a whole new campaign to play through with new graphics, new sounds, new enemies to fight and new weapons to play with. The app is US$2.99, and it's well worth the purchase -- the depth of the game will likely surprise you. Death Rally also got a new update. I haven't really been able to say much about this game because I'm actually in it (there's an achievement for killing me, so have fun with that), but the latest patch features a new track, lots of bug fixes and the ability to save player information to Game Center. And finally, Hothead Games' Bunny the Zombie Slayer picked up a big patch, with new modes to play, support for the Retina Display and Game Center support (which is one of the quibbles I Read More
New Update For Death Rally Adds A New Track And More
Calendar16 Tue, 10 May 2011 13:01:52 UTC +00:00
Death Rally updated to include a slippery new track as well as some other great extras. There’s a second update ahoy for owners of top down street racer, Death Rally, and it brings with it some great new features. Besides the usual mixture of bug fixes and minor improvements, there’s a new track, Eureka, which offers slippery thrills galore with an icy theme and unique camera to boot. You can now collect track parts in order to unlock new levels which makes for a great touch. There’s an in-app purchase on offer too with the ‘Shadow Man’ out to help your progress. Most interestingly of all is that of the new backup system which means you can restore your game progress based upon your Game Center information. It’s the kind of feature I, and no doubt many others, would like to see in more titles ensuring you can continue your game Read More
Death Rally Update Hits App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Apr 2011 14:30:53 UTC +00:00
By Robert Corra on April 14th, 2011 The first Death Rally update arrives quickly with new, free content... Remedy Entertainment, best known for the Max Payne series of videogames and Alan Wake, recently unleashed Death Rally to the app store. Death Rally is a top-down, combat racing game, and is actually a remake of the company’s first title from 1996. It features a single-player career mode where you can earn money to upgrade vehicles and their accompanying weapons. The core goal is to win races by any means necessary, including wrecking your opponents. There are a few cameo appearances along the way by John Gore of Minigore fame, Barry Wheeler from Alan Wake, and videogame legend Duke Nukem himself, all as boss racers. From the onset, Remedy released Death Rally as a universal app, and has promised regular, free updates. It has since quickly climbed the app store charts, and the Read More

Die Steuerung fällt anfangs gewöhnungsbedürftig Read More
'Death Rally' Drops to $2.99
Calendar16 Mon, 11 Apr 2011 17:33:30 UTC +00:00
We've been shoveling heaps of praise on Death Rally [$2.99] lately between our glowing review and the announcement of the recent update. Well, the update is out now and along with it comes a price drop to $2.99. I've still got my fingers (and toes) crossed for some kind of online multiplayer eventually, but a new car, new weapons, and the new game mode included in this update is a great start. Death Rally is a remake of the classic topdown racer with the same title. Made by Remedy, the creators of Max Payne and Alan Wake, on top of being universal Death Rally is also one of the few games out there right now that is fully optimized for the iPad 2. With a steady stream of updates on the way, one already dropped, and a recent sale, there's really no reason to not grab this game. Snap Trap is Read More
Does the name Timo Vihola ring a bell? If you're a card carrying member of the cult of Minigore [99¢ / HD] you're surely familiar, otherwise, he's the artist and co-creator responsible for the Minigore phenomenon as well as a game designer for the recently released Death Rally [$4.99]. In its day, Minigore had an absolutely ridiculous amount of tie-ins with playable characters from other similarly popular games, so it's not much of a surprise to find that John Gore himself is making an appearance in the below video showing off impending Death Rally update. All of the features of this new update are detailed in our forums, but it basically amounts to a new car, two new weapons, a new challenge mode, as well as oodles of tweaks and bug fixes. The update is currently "in review" and Timo is expecting it to drop at any moment. Also, the second Read More

Death Rally is a universal app for iOS devices. Meaning, it’s compatible with iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod touch 3G, iPad 1 and most especially on the recently released iPad 2. This awesome game was made available in collaboration with two of the leading iOS developers, Cornfox and Bros and Mountain Sheep, and it was specifically developed for Apple’s technology, both in terms of visuals and gameplay mechanics. Here’s the official description of Death Rally app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch: “You choose how you win, NO TRICK IS TOO DIRTY! Arguably, the best looking racing game for the iPhone and iPad. Race against incredible boss drivers like DUKE NUKEM. The gameplay is addictive, intense, explosive fun, with racing + weapons = awesome! Lock and load and enter the Death Rally, humiliate and destroy your opponents or sabotage the race.” Some of the notable features include: • Awesome Read More
If you’ve been playing Reckless Racing but wish your top-down racing game had more guns and violence, then you’ll be happy to hear that Remedy Entertainment has just released an iOS version of the PC classic, Death Rally, onto the App Store. If you haven’t had the pleasure of playing Death Rally when it was released back in 1996, then here’s a short rundown of what the game is about. You’re a racer who is dropped in the middle of vehicular death matches as you battle your way to the top while attempting to avoid enemies’ bullets, missiles, and other weapons that will blow up your car real good. The game has received a number of updates to take advantage of iOS, especially the iPad 2. Players start off with a clunker vehicle called “Vagabond.” It may not be the fastest, strongest, and it might have one too many stains in the Read More
Back in January we learned that Remedy Entertainment, developers of Max Payne and Alan Wake, would be resurrecting their first ever PC game Death Rally for an iOS remake. Today, that new version of Death Rally [$4.99] went live in the App Store. I never played Death Rally when it came out in 1996, so my opinion of this remade version won’t be colored with knowledge of the original. Approaching it as strictly a new iOS title, Death Rally is one of the finest top-down racers in the App Store. Death Rally isn’t perfect mind you, but it’s an absolutely gorgeous title with satisfying combat-heavy racing and an engaging upgrade system. The thing that sets Death Rally apart from most racers is its focus on combat. Each vehicle is equipped with a standard machine gun and a second stronger weapon of your choosing. These weapons, along with the vehicles beyond the Read More

IT WAS A CLASSIC BACK IN 1996 BUT A LEGEND IN 2011
ScottySauce 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm so excited to see this game is back and bigger and better than ever. I have been waiting for it's release for so long and now i'm a very happy camper. I love this game alot and I know it's going to be a huge hit for sure. This is a game with some help from Remedy and I'm excited about that as well. You may know of Remedy if you ever played Max Payne and Max Payne 2. This game is simply stunning all around and I'm already having alot of fun playing this one. The textures are clear and bright, and the gameplay is very solid. There are five cars to start (with more coming later), and each of them handles differently, from a huge van down to a muscle car. The weapons are also very different, and all of them are upgradeable. Spending money earned after every race can be used to improve your car's stats or push your weapons up to the next level. As you race, you also unlock various challenges, like racing against just one opponent or going around a reversed track, that mix up the gameplay. I particularly liked the little extras -- you can use your own music library on the iPod version of the game's universal build, there's full Game Center integration included, and there are a few nice IOS cameos as well. John Gore from Minigore will be one of the celebrity drivers, as will Duke Nukem and Alan Wake's Barry Wheeler. Angry Birds' Mighty Eagle is even making an appearance; if you happen to have bought that character, you can ask him to "soar in and attack other cars" for you. I'm really looking forward to the future updates with more cars, tracks, weapons and even an online multiplayer mode out very soon. YOUR GOING TO LOVE THIS ONE!
