Dictionary.com, a free dictionary app for your iPhone or iPod touch, has finally made its way to v2.0. It has been a very long time coming, as the app hasn’t seen any sort of update since June 2009. Dictionary.com is one of the better free dictionary apps available in the App Store thanks to its simplicity and ease of use. The app was recently updated with more than 500,000 new words and definitions, including the much-loved slang terms, pushing the total to nearly 1 million. All word definitions are available offline, which is a huge plus for iPod touch users. A connection is required, however, to access the Word of the Day, hear audio pronunciations, and view similarly spelled words. Dictionary.com v2.0 also features a nifty shake mechanic to view a randomly-selected word, Spanish Word of the Day, antonyms in the Thesaurus, and the ability to browse and edit recent activity. I apologize for dropping off the face of the Earth on Hidden Gems the last couple weeks, but now I’m back, and have some great apps to share! This app premiered for free and then quickly jumped up to 99 cents. It was a steal at free and in my opinion worth a dollar. It’s the perfect example of an app not possible pre-OS 3.0. Face The Music lets you play any of the music from your music library and then share what you’re listening to on Twitter or Facebook. It works very well and plays the music from the iPod on your iPhone or iPod Touch, so even if you close the app, it keeps playing. In a not so surprising turn of events, Apple has censored a recently released dictionary app titled Ninjawords Dictionary and somehow still managed to slap it with a rating of 17+. I am not going to go on a rant about App Store app approval inconsistencies at this point because they are already very well documented, so let’s just get right to the story. According to Daring Fireball, the approval process for Ninjawords Dictionary took exactly two months, and it was a rocky path to approval. The app got rejected for the very first time because it was crashing on the latest beta release of iPhone OS 3.0. The developer quickly fixed the issue, resubmitted the app, and that’s where the silliness begins. The app was rejected once again due to objectionable content showing up in the dictionary’s results. As a person that comes up with ideas for reviews/stories/articles all the time on the fly, I am sometimes left without a way to spell-check my work. There have been Dictionary apps before on the iPhone and iPod Touch, but none as easy to use as this one. The first and greatest thing you will notice about this app is that for the most part it doesn't need a connection to the internet. Fire it up, wait for the app to load, and start checking your spelling and whatnot. Only two functions of the program require you to be connected, but they aren't crucial to the app working smoothly. The database that it pulls from is based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, so it's not some fly by night dictionary that you have never heard of. As it stands, this app is tremendous. It provides the comprehensiveness of other dictionary apps that cost $20 to $30, except this app is free and has a thesaurus and word of the day built in as well. Just for your information, this app is based on the unabridged version of the Random House dictionary and ppears to be as comprehensive as another paid app that I have (American Heritage Fourth Edition).

This is a really wonderful app. A top 5 for sure. My favorite is the audio pronounciations. So helpful and keeps me from looking stupid when I try to expand my vocabulary. ;) I think the thesaurus is great too. I use the site all the time when writting my blog, now I can have it with me. I travel a ton and the ability to use this on an airplane is sooooo great because I don't need to connect to get definitions and synonyms. Great job D.com!!!

Disturbing "Other" memory use

Seems like a very nice dictionary, but despite its claimed ~40MB footprint, I couldn't install it on my phone even though I had > 80MB free. After deleting some music, I had roughly 230MB free and tried again. When it finally installed I noticed my "Other" memory use doubled from about 220MB to well over 400MB, and my free memory droped to 7MB. This happened whether I installed through iTunes or directly from the app store on the phone.

This app has it all! Dictionary, Thesaurus, Word of the Day and it has more definitions per word than any other app I've tried. Plus, it's free! All the other apps cost money. It does take a long time to synch and I can understand why people THINK it crashes, but it doesn't. Be patient, the app is big, remebmer all the content is offline so you can use it without an interent connection! Excellent!!!! 5 Stars!

Great App... I think there needs to be a few additions in future updates though. 1. Add a "back/forward button area," so when you're going back between words it's easier... 2. A recent update promised that the "Word of the Day" would have audio prenuciation... but today's didn't until I clicked on it's root word. Even w/o these minor changes it is still an App that EVERY iPhone/iPod Touch user should keep handy!! Thanks for a great App Dictionary.com!!!

Almost... Just one huge problem

I'm on my iPod touch 2G and this app was helpful and functional as I used it but when I plugged this in to sync some files, it would always get stuck at the dictionary and that causes issues. I tried deleting this app and syncing afterwards and it started working again. I notice that I'm not the first to be upset about this malfunction. Please fix and I would start using and recommending this app again. Thanks.

There is a bug in the application which prevents it from working properly in landscape view. You can switch to landscape view, but as soon as you type a single letter in the search field, the typing keys retract. Click again, type another letter and the keys disappear again. Also the landscape display puts the text at a very large point size, which cannot be scaled down, making it largely unusable.
