Developer Spotlight: Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns
Calendar16 Tue, 30 Aug 2011 16:31:00 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 30, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Mike Smithwick of Distant Suns. What’s your name? Mike Smithwick What’s your company’s name? First Light Design, LLC, I was hoping to name it something like “Apple,” I know, dumb name, but someone already had it. Where are you located? San Jose, CA. Within walking distance of Cisco (really!), Intel, eBay, and only a few miles always from the Mother Ship. What’s your website address? www.distantsuns.com What’s your Twitter name? @distantsuns for any hot breaking news about, uh, Distant Suns (duh!). And @lazyastronomer for general space and astronomy geek stuff. Why @lazyastronomer? When people ask me why I wanted to write Read More
Distant Suns 2 Puts Space in Your Pocket

12.15.09        App Score: 8/10    Distant Suns 2: Unleash your inner astronaut — Judging by the number of pocket planetariums and other astronomy apps in the App Store’s inventory, stargazing is not just for fans of Star Wars or astronomy nerds like me. My astronomy app of choice is Vito Technology’s Star Walk, a wonderfully entertaining and educational app tapped by Apple as one of the best apps of 2009. If you want to know what’s going on in the skies around you, that is a must-have app. I recently had some time to try First Light’s Distant Suns 2: Unleash your inner astronaut, which is another astronomy app with similar features. I had high hopes that Distant Suns 2 would also take up space on my iPhone 3GS. Distant Suns has an extensive pedigree in astronomy. The original Distant Suns was written in 1985 for the Commodore Amiga, Read More

Reviews

what's the difference between the lite & full versions?
Bob(OH) 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not at all obvious from the description, unless there's a line or two difference somewhere in the long description. I do see a sentence about it on the website but it should be clearer in the descriptions in the App Store.
Well worth the download
Thorough Review 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
For everything this app does it is amazing it is free. Download it now and learn about the sky above. Great job!!!
Local sidereal time
Cgbjr 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
LST time is glitchy when using gps, but OK when using a city. Shows accurate coordinates, but miscomputes LST.
Fun!
All thumbs. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This a great app. Takes me back to boyhood looking at the sky with chart in hand. I'm thrilled.
Wonderful ! ! !
Bizebyrd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very nice, Thank You very much. Anyone interested in looking up into the sky and wondering what you are looking at, should get this app.

SirKeithD 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a top-tier app. Absolutely wonderful. A lot of fun and genuinely educational w/o being dull or boring. I don't know how the full featured app could be better but as soon as I'm comfortable with this lite version I intend to find out! At the moment, this and Pandora are my best apps. Some apps aren't worth downloading even for free. This one is the other end of the spectrum - Definitely worth the time to d/l and learn to use!!

Augustaace 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I visit the beach frequently and have used other apps to tell me what's in the sky. This app is perfect, the best yet. Thanks.
Like it a lot!
+180V 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Please put the paid version on sale. I'm so impressed with the free version that I would upgrade immediately if you'd drop the price. I bet a lot of other folks would too. Looking forward to the next version. Highly recommended.
Sweet

Jfantomaster 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Yes, this was one of my best softwares on the Atari, a long time ago, in another galaxy !
Excellent app - esp for free.
e1237m 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Why pay the outrageous fees asked by others? This has the basics covered.

Top notch app!
Olde Astronomer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
As a longtime user of Distant Suns on the Amiga then Windows, the port to the iPod Touch/iPhone platform is well done. It's fairly intuitive and easy to navigate.
Spectacular app
mommabubblebutt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's great that you can carry this anywhere! If you're really interested in astronomy, I suggest you look into the Starry Night software for the computer.
Distant Suns is a classic
Astergawker 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've enjoyed this application since my Amiga days, through several Mac versions. This is a rare instance where the perfect platform and a well-seasoned, mature program come together as if they had been meant for each other all along. Grab a pair of binoculars and your iPhone. Go outside on a dark night and enjoy the splendor above you.
So informative & fun
Uncle Vinny 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I can't believe it's free... I've told all my friends, especially those with kids. Definitely worth trying out; you will love it, especially if you are a little nerdy like me. Beautiful job!
Free version better than Starmap
e1237m 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I found this lite version of Distant Suns to be better than the $12 version of Starmap. As an amateur astronomer, I found that this program contains the fundamentals and is much more intuitive than the wildly expensive alternatives.
INACCURATE!
kcarderoe 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I don't care how detailed this application is... the author considers pluto a planet. Because of this it is NOT up-to-date and should NOT be considered accurate. The IAU demoted Pluto, upsetting as that may be, to a dwarf planet and is NO LONGER part of out solar system. DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
To the guy below
*•* 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Even though pluto has offically been considered a "dwarf planet" many scientists still call pluto a planet. This is not suffisiant(misspell) information to rate this app low and say it is "outdated". I have not checked the app out yet myself but it's free so what can it hurt??
Great Astronomy App for Novice to Intermediate
Acedian 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The app was so good and useful in the lite version that I went ahead and purchased the full version on sale (Moon landing sale)... Nice price, great app, but needs more user control.
Best Free Astronomy App
Leodavinci0 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It contains so much info that it puts the other free apps like it to shame. One issue I found, the info screen for the sun will not update once the location updates. In order for it to update you need to restart the app. Thank you and keep up the good work dev.
A great app!
Montag 451 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
A great astronomy app for the novice. Clearly a labor of love from the developer, it is amazing how much info is packed in here.
Animekid360x 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
