Distant Suns (Lite): Astronomy, the universe and stars, oh my!
FREE
Description
In 1987 Distant Suns first put the universe on your desktop. In 2009 it puts the universe in your shirt pocket. First released for the Commodore Amiga, Distant Suns is one of most venerable software titles around.
Sporting a database of thousands of stars, nebula and galaxies, Distant Suns has earned the reputation of both having one of the most realistic displays of the night sky, while being one of the easiest to use astronomy programs available for the most casual sky watcher and
serious telescope jockey alike.
Here's what people said about the original DIstant Suns:
•5 Stars from ituneappreview.com, http://www.ituneappreviews.com/2008/11/12/distant-suns.htm
•5 Stars in iphoneapplicationlist.com
• 4 Stars from AppVee.co: http://www.appvee.com/t/distant-suns
•A "million bazillion stars" from my girlfriend.
Features include:
•Best tech support in this and parallel universes
•Thousands of pinpoint stars scintillating like diamond dust in the palm of your hand (but not nearly as scratchy)
•Realistic ghostly band of the Milky Way
•All 88 constellations with articles on their mythology
•All 9 planets (yes, we feel that little Pluto got a bad rap so in the Distant Suns universe it is still a planet)
•Sun and Moon
•GPS aware
•What's Up? Gives a quick snapshot overview of where all of the important stuff is
•Easy one-handed operation.
•Point and Identify mode reveals the hidden data for each of those star-things.
•Planetary data and information
•IM the author with astronomical questions. And he may answer if he's not napping. AIM Handle: lazyastronomer. Also on twitter at distantsuns.
What this doesn't have that you will find in the full version:
•The ability to change date/time and accelerate time to study the heavenly motions
•Additional landscape images
•Third toolbar for ease of navigation
• Extra in-depth data about each object
The Universe just got, well...uh..."smaller."

Distant Suns 2: Unleash your inner astronaut — Judging by the number of pocket planetariums and other astronomy apps in the App Store’s inventory, stargazing is not just for fans of Star Wars or astronomy nerds like me. My astronomy app of choice is Vito Technology’s Star Walk, a wo...

A great astronomy app for the novice. Clearly a labor of love from the developer, it is amazing how much info is packed in here.

It contains so much info that it puts the other free apps like it to shame. One issue I found, the info screen for the sun will not update once the location updates. In order for it to update you need to restart the app. Thank you and keep up the good work dev.
Great Astronomy App for Novice to Intermediate

The app was so good and useful in the lite version that I went ahead and purchased the full version on sale (Moon landing sale)... Nice price, great app, but needs more user control.
To the guy below
Even though pluto has offically been considered a "dwarf planet" many scientists still call pluto a planet. This is not suffisiant(misspell) information to rate this app low and say it is "outdated". I have not checked the app out yet myself but it's free so what can it hurt??
INACCURATE!

I don't care how detailed this application is... the author considers pluto a planet. Because of this it is NOT up-to-date and should NOT be considered accurate. The IAU demoted Pluto, upsetting as that may be, to a dwarf planet and is NO LONGER part of out solar system. DO NOT DOWNLOAD.
Free version better than Starmap

I found this lite version of Distant Suns to be better than the $12 version of Starmap. As an amateur astronomer, I found that this program contains the fundamentals and is much more intuitive than the wildly expensive alternatives.
So informative & fun

I can't believe it's free... I've told all my friends, especially those with kids. Definitely worth trying out; you will love it, especially if you are a little nerdy like me.
Beautiful job!
Distant Suns is a classic

I've enjoyed this application since my Amiga days, through several Mac versions. This is a rare instance where the perfect platform and a well-seasoned, mature program come together as if they had been meant for each other all along. Grab a pair of binoculars and your iPhone. Go outside on a dark night and enjoy the splendor above you.
Spectacular app

It's great that you can carry this anywhere! If you're really interested in astronomy, I suggest you look into the Starry Night software for the computer.
Good app

As a longtime user of Distant Suns on the Amiga then Windows, the port to the iPod Touch/iPhone platform is well done. It's fairly intuitive and easy to navigate.

Yes, this was one of my best softwares on the Atari, a long time ago, in another galaxy !
Excellent app - esp for free.
Why pay the outrageous fees asked by others? This has the basics covered.

Loveittt
Like it a lot!
Please put the paid version on sale. I'm so impressed with the free version that I would upgrade immediately if you'd drop the price. I bet a lot of other folks would too. Looking forward to the next version. Highly recommended.
Sweet

This is a top-tier app. Absolutely wonderful. A lot of fun and genuinely educational w/o being dull or boring. I don't know how the full featured app could be better but as soon as I'm comfortable with this lite version I intend to find out! At the moment, this and Pandora are my best apps.
Some apps aren't worth downloading even for free. This one is the other end of the spectrum - Definitely worth the time to d/l and learn to use!!
what's the difference between the lite & full versions?
Not at all obvious from the description, unless there's a line or two difference somewhere in the long description. I do see a sentence about it on the website but it should be clearer in the descriptions in the App Store.
Well worth the download

For everything this app does it is amazing it is free. Download it now and learn about the sky above. Great job!!!
Local sidereal time
LST time is glitchy when using gps, but OK when using a city. Shows accurate coordinates, but miscomputes LST.
Fun!
