Four websites that need iPad apps
Calendar16 Sat, 03 Sep 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
The iPad is an amazing device for surfing the web. Its large screen and multitouch gestures make it feel like you're actually holding a web page in your hands. Web browsing on the iPad is going to get even better with the release of iOS 5. That's when Safari on iPad gains Reading List and Reader functionality and the all-important tabbed browsing. However, as good as the iPad is at handling web browsing, some websites would clearly benefit from a dedicated iPad app. When viewed on an iPad, these sites lack key features that they show off to full effect when used with desktop browsers. Other websites have a high amount of interactivity that may work on an iPad, but that interactivity doesn't translate well to a touch interface. I realize that any website could be made into an iPad app. Most websites, however, don't need them. Here at TUAW, for Read More

Bringing Your New iPad 2 to Work
Calendar16 Fri, 18 Mar 2011 22:20:33 UTC +00:00
As most companies have looked to cut costs any way they could, the result has been a workforce equipped with underpowered devices, plastic enclosures and an outdated mobile paradigm that require most users to carry around a mouse and power cord to be of any real use.  Most business users have simply had enough, and for a very affordable price, are starting to fund their own IT revolution by bringing their new iPads to the workplace. Here’s how you can do the same. Getting a new iPad 2 is only half the battle.  Once you’re at work, before you can reclaim the time you once lost to reboots or hunting for the one free power outlet in the conference room, you realize you need to get connected to the corporate network.  For the most part, establishing a new connection to your place of work’s wireless network is quite easy.  If you’re Read More
Office App Showdown: Round Three: Presentations
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Feb 2011 14:21:38 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/23/2011 at 6:21am | by J Keirn-Swanson We've seen what Apple could dish up when it came to word processing, and we've seen the competitors bring occasionally impressive functionality to this realm.  We've even seen word processing on the iPhone, which, while not glamorous or particularly easy, is still nice. Spreadsheets were likewise a solid contender for data crunching even if there were some major shortcomings in the apps which sought to dethrone Numbers from its rightful place. The third and final installment is at last at hand. Presentations, the scourge of corporate meetings.   It's almost as if DocsToGo realized the near impossibility of its task -- how to create a universal app that also manages flexibility and creativity -- threw up their hands and gave up. Sure, you can open PowerPoint files, save them, share them, etc., but creation? Creation is an ugly process that gives no pleasure Read More
Office App Showdown: Round One: Word Processing
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 14:42:33 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/09/2011 at 6:42am | by J Keirn-Swanson Back when it was just the iPhone, there wasn't  much demand for mobile word processing, but when the iPad came along, people expected full computer functionality. Apple heeded the call with mobile versions of iWork, but Microsoft Office still remains king of document software. The popular .doc is still the number one format with a bullet, and a variety of office-based software has arisen to handle it. In our special cage-match office productivity App Showdown, we'll go three rounds to find out who is the undisputed master of the mobile domain, Apple or its competitors.     Documents to Go Premium ($16.99, universal)One of the bigger players in the market, Documents to Go by DataViz, Inc., brings word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations under one umbrella. Plus, the app developers rock it out as a universal, so even iPhone users can hook themselves up. Read More
iWork vs Documents to Go — Which one should you use?
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Jan 2011 15:49:10 UTC +00:00
By Chad Garrett, Friday, Jan 28, 2011 | When it comes to document editing and creation on the iPad, two solutions really stand out: Apple’s iWork Suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) and DataViz’s Documents to Go app. Which is better? Well, I wish the decision was that easy. Both apps (or set of apps in iWork’s case — you can buy each separately) allow you to edit and create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. iWork also has the advantage of using Apple’s iWork format and Office format as well and is beautifully designed. Documents to Go does a stellar job of rendering and editing Microsoft’s Office format. Let’s begin by looking at each app a little more in-depth. I will focus primarily on the differences of how each application handles their word processing since this is the number one reason people would use these apps and, you probably don’t want a mini-novel Read More

Seven essential apps for your iPad
Calendar16 Mon, 04 Oct 2010 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Like every modern mobile device, the iPad is only as good as the apps you have running on it. Sure, Apple's entry into the tablet market comes packing a decent Web browser, mail client, and photo viewer, but with apps at your side, the iPad can be transformed from an expensive couch-browser into a truly useful tool. So, for those of you who've just bagged yourself a shiny new iPad, or if you're just looking for some decent apps, I've got a few gems to pass your way. Instapaper (Universal) - $4.99 [iTunes] Reeder for iPad - $4.99 [iTunes] Twitter (Universal) - Free [iTunes] Dropbox (Universal) - Free [iTunes] IMDb (Universal) - Free [iTunes] Adobe Ideas for iPad - Free [iTunes] Documents To Go (Universal) - $9.99 [iTunes] Documents To Go Premium (Universal) - $16.99 [iTunes] That's your lot for now, but if you know of an absolutely iPad app that Read More
Just because they are in the process of being acquired by RIM, DataViz doesn’t want to abandon iOS users. As a matter of fact, the company launched the new version of its popular mobile office suite, Documents To Go, for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Version 4.0 brings two important feature upgrades: In addition, Documents To Go 4.0 got some under the hood improvements to enhance the overall speed of the application; Sheet To Go now supports freeze panes and the ability to sort to round out, while Word To Go adds extensive paragraph formatting such as left and right indent, strike out, and a variety of bullet styles. Documents To Go and Documents To Go Premium are available for $9.99 and $16.99 respectively from the two links below… Documents To Go ($9.99) [iTunes link] Documents To Go Premium ($16.99) [iTunes link] Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction Read More
Although the iPad was never designed to be a laptop replacement, iWork for iPad was featured as one of the platform's star programs. If you're happy with the simplistic iWork format -- and want to pay $9.99 each for Pages, Keynote and Numbers -- then stick with it. However, for a few dollars more than the cost of just one iWork for iPad app, you can purchase either Documents To Go or Quickoffice and get all of the apps rolled into one. A recent update to Documents To Go got rid of a lot of the bugs that annoyed me when I reviewed the iPhone version in 2009. For the first time, typing did not lag as I wrote a script for a friend. The toolbar has been greatly simplified, with a lot of functions now appearing under pop-up menus. You get numerous document styling features that make the word processing Read More

[app] Elements – Dropbox Powered Text Editor
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Aug 2010 05:34:09 UTC +00:00
Dropbox + text editing = Droptext
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Most of the bloggers here at TUAW are huge fans of Dropbox, the free cloud storage service. Since you can share documents with all of your iDevices, wouldn't it be nice to be able to edit your files from any of them as well? There are actually several solutions for cross-platform on-the-go Dropbox file editing, like Documents To Go Premium (US$14.99) for both iPhone and iPad. However, if your need is just for plain vanilla text file editing for iOS, you might want to take a look at Droptext ($0.99) from developer Kevin Smith. Any type of file with a MIME type of TEXT can be opened from Dropbox and edited in Droptext. Those files types include .txt, .php, HTML, CSS, and many source code types. Smith promises to add the ability to add your own file extensions in a future version of Droptext. Editable file types appear with a text Read More
iPad Office Suites: Quickoffice or Documents To Go
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:03:10 UTC +00:00
When the iPad was announced, Steve touted the virtues of how wonderful it would be to have iWork on your iPad. We at TheAppleBlog were unimpressed with Pages, Numbers and Keynote. You can read the full reviews for details, but our primary complaints revolved around the difficulty of getting documents on and off the iPad and syncing with the cloud. If all you want is iWork files primarily on your iPad, no need to look beyond the iWork Suite for the iPad. However, iPhone users have been working with their spreadsheets, documents, and presentations in the cloud for a while with the iPhone versions of Documents To Go and Quickoffice and got used to not being locked into the iWork file format. Now that the iPad versions of these apps are finally out, which one is right for you? Let’s review the features first. Documents to Go for the iPhone was Read More

5 iPad Apps That Changed My Mind
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Jun 2010 21:00:13 UTC +00:00
I was not optimistic about the future of the iPad prior to its release. It seemed a unicorn among horses in the tech world, something precious and therefore expensive, but without any real tangible benefit over its brethren in terms of functionality, at least for the average person. Clearly, I was wrong. But what convinced me that I truly was wrong about the iPad and its prospects for the future weren’t the reports coming in about its tremendous retail success. That could still be accounted for by initial fervor for a new product by Apple, which, few will argue, has become the “it” company of late. No, it was a few select apps that convinced me that the iPad was here to stay, and that that was a good thing. Below are those apps, along with why I think they’re serious game-changers. Documents To Go Premium 3.3 sings along the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Jun 2010 09:30:23 UTC +00:00
DataViz has released a new version of Documents To Go Premium in the AppStore. The main new thing is… drums please… the iPad support! As expected, the huge screen estate is well used when displaying documents, and the updated application can also sing along iTunes File Sharing for moving files between your iPad and computer. Moreover, inter-application document sharing is enabled, hence now the email app can open supported attachments in Documents To Go. In addition to playing well on Apple’s tablet, Documents To Go Premium 3.3 supports two additional cloud services – Mobile Me iDisk and SugarSync (that’s in addition to Google Docs, Dropbox and Box.net); and is now available in French, Italian, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. Finally, the update (3.3) is coming to the regular, non-Premium version and should be available shortly (UPDATE: It’s available now). That version, however, doesn’t work with cloud-based services and email attachments and Read More
Documents to Go for iPad- app review
Calendar16 Sun, 06 Jun 2010 23:46:58 UTC +00:00
By Chad Garrett, Sunday, Jun 6, 2010 | As a user of Dataviz’s Documents to Go product for years, I was ecstatic for the iPhone release and now even more so for the universal binary for iPad. Documents to Go is a mobile office productivity suite that allows you to create and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint formatted documents and file types on your iPad. Let’s first look at how we can access our documents, there are a few different ways. First, you can create documents on the iPad. Next, you can sync with your desktop (PC or Mac). You can install a free desktop sync tool. This allows you to pick a folder on your computer and sync those documents to the iPad, or use the built-in iTunes sync if that is your preference. Last but not least you can connect to a few different web services in the Read More
Documents To Go now available on iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 04 Jun 2010 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
Many years ago, I used Documents To Go with my Palm IIIe.* Now, the productivity suite for handhelds is available for the iPad. Just like that old version, this universal app lets you view and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents (including those in the Office 2007/2008/2010 XML format). Unlike Docs To Go on the Palm, it's got the iPad's big, beautiful screen to work with. It also takes advantage of iTunes file sharing and apps that use the "Open in..." feature. For example, you can send an email attachment directly to Docs To Go from within Mail. You can also open iWork files and access documents in your Dropbox, Google Docs, Box.net, iDisk, or SugarSync accounts. It's definitely nice to see the majority of a spreadsheet or an entire Word document at once, and desktop sync over Wi-Fi (separate desktop app required) is quite handy. We've only had time to Read More
DataViz has rolled out an update for both the Premium and non-Premium version of their Documents To Go app. The update brings both versions up to 3.3 and adds universal support. In other words — these are now both iPad friendly. Additionally, the Premium version has also added support for SugarSync and the MobileMe iDisk. Also important to note is that both of these apps are listed as being on sale with a 20% savings and that sale will end on June 4th. Finally, for those currently using the non-Premium version, there is an in-app option available to upgrade for $4.99. Read More

Documents To Go Universal Update Released

By Jeff Scott on June 1st, 2010 Documents To Go Premium updated to support the iPad at full resolution! Documents To Go is a portable office suite that includes viewers and editors for word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentation files. It offers full Microsoft Office compatibility on the go, and now on the iPad! Dataviz today released an update to their Documents To Go Premium that supports the full resolution of the iPad. The update was released as a Universal update meaning that it works on both the iPhone and iPad — and you only need to buy one copy to use it on both devices. The update also brings MobileMe and SugarSync support to the device allowing you to read and store files on those cloud services. The iPad update also supports syncing documents to the app via iTunes File Sync. But honestly, that’s the least attractive way to get Read More

Documents To Go was voted as our AppAwards “Best Document Creation App” back in July, and at that time it certainly was one of if not the best of its kind for the iPhone and iPod touch.  However, over the last couple of months, Quickoffice had gained some momentum by offering the ability to create, open, and edit Microsoft Excel spreadsheet files.  Dataviz finally decided enough was enough and pushed an update to Documents To Go out that adds these same abilities to their document creation app in an attempt to reclaim its throne. Documents To Go already featured the ability to create, edit, and view Microsoft Word files, and view Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, and Apple iWork files.  It even allowed you to keep your files in sync with a free companion application that works on both Macs and PCs via Wi-Fi.  The biggest piece of the puzzle left out, Read More
Quickoffice v1.4 Gives Word And Excel Files Some Love

Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite is a solid document creation and editing app for those of you who travel a lot for business purposes or need a quick fix for your school assignments.  It recently received an update that adds the ability to create, open, and edit Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 files, which should make it your go-to business app. Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite consists of three different apps that can be purchased separately, but together they make the ultimate app.  It allows you to edit Word and Excel documents, transfer desktop files via Wi-Fi, remotely access MobileMe, email files, and even mount your device as a drive. Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite is priced relatively high for an iPhone app at $14.99, which is technically its sale price, but it offers so many features that it’s tough to even compare.  Its direct competitor, Documents To Go, is priced at $9.99 and Read More
Five Apps for the lawyer
Calendar16 Thu, 06 Aug 2009 14:30:00 UTC +00:00
It's official. The iPhone has come into its own in the legal world. It took a little time, and lawyers are notorious Luddites (you can pry the WordPerfect out of their cold, dead hands) but they do like Bright Shiny Objects, and nothing fills the lapel pocket like an iPhone. The iPhone finally cracked the law-firm standards stranglehold by virtue of its compatibility with Microsoft Exchange, which freed lawyers from the non-choice of "would you like a Blackberry, or a Blackberry?" Granted, the Blackberry still seems to have a better handle on business needs, but for some, the iPhone is worth getting to know. It should go without saying -- I will say it, though -- many of the productivity apps that are useful to everybody are useful to lawyers, so two of these apps are not strictly law-related. (See if you can spot them! It's a brain teaser and a Read More

This is exactly what I was waiting for. If I could only be able to see attachments and send attachments from the app by using gmail or other emails, that would be great. Then it would really be, not a 5 start, but a 7 star app. Please don't limit this to Microsoft exchange attachments, if you like to expand your business. Being able to view and store (and even edit) attachments is what millions of iphone users are lacking currently. Limiting the access to Microsoft exchange, does not help to solve this problem for most of us. But, in any case, this is well done app, and you deserve way more than the 9.99.
Disappointed...but hopeful
Bifocal Man 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I waited, and waited, and waited...for Documents To Go to arrive on the iPhone. Now that it is here, I'm disappointed. I used DTG on my old Palm system, and was very pleased with that version. On the iPhone, I'm going to continue using QuickOffice because it works much better. I can upload and download files more easily with QuickOffice into preorganized folders using a convenient Web browser. With DTG, the desktop link app is awkward and more difficult to use, although auto sync if changed documents is good. But you have to duplicate the linked files in DTG and move them to a folder that isn't linked to use the files when the laptop isn't linked. I can type quickly on the QuickOffice keyboard because it doesn't lag the way DTG does. And most importantly, I can use Excel in QuickOffice NOW, and month it two. Can't do that yet in DTG. I'll keep checking back with DTG, and if the updates make it meet my needs, I may switch. But for now, DTG falls way short of my requirements. I just discovered that Documents to Go does not sync when you are running VPN on the iPhone and Mac laptop even if both are connected to the same wireless network. The same thing happens in Quickoffice.
Outstanding application that supports email attachments
Palmsolo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
To be useful for work, I need to be able to receive email attachments, view and/or edit them, and then send them back out and Documents To Go provides this with my Exchange server. The application works extremely well and has all the features and functions I need for working with Word documents on the go, at an incredibly low price. I can't wait for their Excel spreadsheet program and am pleased it will be given to DTG buyers for free. Great job and keep up the excellent work.
My iPhone is Now Complete!
Qramirez 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow! Been waiting for DocsToGo to hit my iPhone. Only thing i've missed since my old Palm! The sync works even better than I remember on the Palm version. And, now I can actually do something with my Outlook attachments. Not sure what this will be priced at later, but i know these guys have always charged me $20 or more for upgrades alone. God Bless the AppStore and DataViz!
JUNK JUNK JUNK
Goerg1 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app was released one day before the iphone 3.0 upgrade just so they wouldn't have to be 3.0 compliant per the apple requirement for new apps and guess what? they're not! not even the new cut and paste work on this piece of crap! Also there's no way of e'mailing the documents!!! C'mon even free apps can email stuff THIS APP IS A BIG RIP OFF. OH and there's no excel anything
Better than QuickOffice
msproductions 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
After having bought QuickOffice at double the price & while .xls isn't editable yet in this version, I still thnk it is better with the editing of the attachments. I still think that the handling of attachments could be better somewhat like ReaddleDocs does it! Personally not being able to edit documents on the go (without syncing with your desktop) I think is a FAIL. So having that capabilty is a step in the right direction.
DataViz jumped the gun...
cabrillo24 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I believe DataViz jumped the gun too soon on this application as it doesn't integrate with the iPhone 3.0 software. Even though the app has it's own copy and paste function, it's not neccessary on the 3.0 software, and with them being developers they've had access to it for months. They should have waited until the O/S 3.0 release for that.
Not yet ready for primetime
T.A.B. 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been using Dataviz products for twenty years from Laplink to Maclink to Palm Docs To Go -- and now to this. Based on my long history with them, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt in future updates. However, this version is not quite there, yet. I downloaded this application 24 hours ago. In that time I have devoted a good three full hours trying to get it to work. I was randomly successful in transferring a document one time only.. Generally the application times out or the desktop app freezes and needs a restart. Very, very frustrating. I have three other apps that sync thru wireless with no problem (bookpedia, stanza and SplashID). So I know the feature should be able to work with this application. But it's hit and miss -- mostly miss. And the Exchange version won't recognize my MS Exchange server. Also frustrating. Documentation is abysmal and support pretty much non-existant at this point. Again, I have high hopes and fingers are crossed. But early adopters beware!
Nice....very nice!
Wolf Cookie 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The iPhone app is very cool. But where is the companion desktop app? I can't find anything on their web page yet...?
Lag
Ang3l12 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The keyboard lags in portrait and landscape. Too much lag to use it in my opinion. Desktop sync works great though, that's why it got one star. I will keep using quickoffice though until they resolve the lag issue
Ouch!!!!!
Avid Dataviz Fan 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been a long time user of the Dataviz suite of tools on the Palm Treo and was waiting anxiously for this release on the Iphone. I must say I was very dissapointed with the lack of functionality for all of the office products and in particular when I tried to load a Powerpoint presentation my Iphone locked up several times. In addition, the lack of support info is very poor. Not what I have experienced from Dataviz in the past. I'm hoping this is a short term problem.
Halfway works
markgillis 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The desktop-to-iPhone portion works as advertised. What does not seem to work is Exchange. Cryptic error messages, referring one to a page on their website which returns a 404 (not found). I created a support case, but the only response I can get via that route is advise which seems to pertain to Blackberries, not to iPhones, and has nothing to do with Exchange. Nothing more frustrating than answering a question I didn't ask and ignoring the question I did ask.
Very nice!
tmk12v 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great start and I look forward to editing excel files but what I would like to see added is SMB file sharing so I can pull files off my network servers as well as the email attachments and sync software. It would also be nice to have just webdav and or FTP file sharing without the sync software.
No gmail
Csilver 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is app is great. The editing capabilities are awesome. The only down side is support for my gmail account.
Do u care
T-MAN 504 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
An update better include being able to edit exel doc. Not that data viz is even going to read this...(terrable rep with customers) At least QuickOffice hears what there customers have to say. What does this say about there biz when they submit some half baked piece of sh*t that 'uses iPhones def. Viewer'-For it's "supported formats"
Desktop Sync Doesn't Work
Evlar77 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I jumped on this app right away as I use my iPhone for work a lot and was really looking forward to the document sync with my desktop computer. Unfortunately, the sync did not work... even after help from tech support. They are going to get back to me, hopefully. I also noticed that the navigation through the program has some minor lag to include typing. Had no problems syncing with my webmail however. I will be happy with the $9.99 spent on this app if and when they fix the document sync. Until then, use your best judgement.
Enable documents sync with iDisk
bluehornZ 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Pls made possible to download n upload documents from MobileMe iDisk. Much greatly appreciated.
Really another one!
The best? 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Exchange account, really? Can't we have more options than this one? The two biggest services for email are gmail and MobileMe. Don't restrict differs t services for email attachment capabilities. This seems to be just a glorified version of dropbox. Except for dropbox I don't need my iPhone on the same wifi network to see the docs. Allow the ability to create a new excel and ppt doc. Link it any server syncing, then it would be a five star app. I can't believe we waited a month extra for this copycat app.
Slick, but needs alot of work
SkydiverTilt 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Without Microsoft Exchange, this app is pretty worthless. I have this and Quickoffice, I'm going to stick with Quickoffice as my primary until an update comes out. I do like the interface and the intro price though. I'm sure they will hash out the kinks and add features soon enough...although it will probably cost $20 by then ;)
Good start but was expecting more
Pjg8867 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
After the long wait, was dissapointed that only editing word docs was supported. Used Docs to Go on my palm for years and was expecting the same product. I do use MS Exchange and works as advertised. Viewing ppt and xls works well also. Hoping to see updates soon for editing other types of files.
Will get you out when in a pinch
Pinchinchopupuso 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was really excited when this was finally released. Don't get me wrong, I was not expecting this to replace my laptop's word processor, and it will get you out when in a pinch, but it would be nice to have these features added or fixed: Exchange didn't work with my Gmail account, paragraph/page formatting, and header & footer notes. Not a deal breaker at all: UI could use a face lift and this app is slugish on my 1st gen iPhone.
Disapointing Support
TomSC 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was having an issue where a word document was not displaying correctly and I was told by support "The file may not display correctly with certain items because it is not supported by Documents To Go." I honestly thought Dataviz stated they were compatable with Word 97, 2000, X, XP, 2003, 2007 for Windows. I did not notice a footnote for that statement. We will see what they do in the future. Maybe then I will increase my rating.
Useless Mac software.
Joel Carlton 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fail. Cant get any mac software working. I have installed on a macbook pro, mac pro, and mac mini running server. All 10.5.7. Software wont even open on the mac book pro; it just quits. Software will open on my mac mini and my mac pro but it will not detect my phone. I am on the same wifi network and have no firewall issues and yet its like my phone does not even exist. If I cant even find my device what good is this whole thing. I hope Data Viz does not stay one of these companies with crappy service and products. Only supporting windows or having windows ahead of the mac is old school. In this market and day and the mac is real competition and developers should be making apps that run just as good on a mac as on a pc. In my books this is a pc company.
terrible experience
Richard Chen 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't transfer my files to ipod touch because DTG desktop encounters error every time when I add device to it, even more, I can't find any resolution of this problem from dataviz's web site, but uppermost, I can't get any support from dataviz via e-mail and telephone, What a terrible thing it is!
Not worth the $9.99
scrappinmom66 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am so disappointed with this app and DataViz. I was so looking forward to this app after using docs to go in my Palm Treo. Like others have said, this app uses the iphone reader. It would be nice to be able to open files from other email accounts, like gmail. I'm very sorry I wasted my money on this. Maybe I should have taken a hint from the slow response from Apple when approving this app.
New version is great!
iPhone 3G fanatic 5.0 stars
Version 1.1 has some definite advantages over Quickoffice. I own both and love the integration with MS Exchange. I wish these apps could Bluetooth sync instead of requiring WiFi.
Great app, needs Write to Excel
xiape 4.0 stars
I love Docs to Go. It came installed on my old Palm & was fantastic - easy to use, simple to understand, portable & powerful. My only complaint here so far is that even with the update to 1.1 DataViz still hasn't added support to create & edit iWork or Excel spreadsheets, which is disappointing to say the least. I used to use my Palm to accurately track my mileage & gasoline expenses for work, using formulas in Excel to do all the heavy lifting for me. Now, I've got an iPhone with 10-times the power of my old Palm but can't manage a spreadsheet. The price is definitely right on Docs to Go, but if they don't correct this inadequacy soon, I might begin to wonder if I made the right choice in going with DataViz. I'll update this review if/when these features become aailable. Until then, my mark for the app is four stars rather than five.
E-mail sync
Jim Leszczynski 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Why on earth would you release an update for the less expensive (non-exchange) version that allowed for non-exchange email to be used. One would think that with the purchase you should have ALL the features included in the $4.99 version as you do in the $9.99. Perhaps we don't want to be forced to use our exchange account... and don't feel like paying for another version... This is just poor marketing.
Gosh, DavaViz - I am disappointed
Globalnat 2.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I have used DataViz products since 1985 when their first Mac-PC file translator product was released. I used later Docs-to-Go (DTG) on the Palm and their Windows Mobile product. I was so excited when I hear DTG was coming for the iPhone. I expected a word processor, a spread sheet and an editable slide presentation program that at least synchronized with Mac's iWorks suite and maybe with Office. Boy was I disappointed. First, the word processor works only with Microsoft Word - not Pages. To use the DTG word processor, I need to save my Pages documents as a ".doc." Then I discovered that there is no spell checker. Spell check is a significant reason that I bought the product. By the way, all Word's headers, footers and page numbers are lost. Then, it does not have a working spread sheet. It uses the native application built in to the iPhone to read spreadsheets and and slide presentations. Wow - deficient to say the very least. Finally, it does this weird thing with Exchange. It downloads only those files with attachments. These files are already stored in your mail program, so these are all duplicates. It would be better by far if DTG simply looked at my email stored in my email program and found the attachments it understood. So it gets 2 stars from me. I would wait to buy DTG. Let's see if the DataViz team decides to make this product for the iPhone work even half as well as their product for the Palm.
PLEASE listen & DON'T waste money!!
Fyzics 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
OK, so it's cool that you can do the whole WiFi thing; it makes it easy and quick to put documents on your iPhone. BUT!!! This App DOES NOT support Office 2007, that means NO .docx. SO when you open your files on your phone, they come out all messed up. Not only that, but it runs WAY too slow, trying to edit anything is just TOO slow! Yes, it's cheap, but you will waist your money and just have to spend it on buying another, better app. Those are my thoughts; hopefully you listen and save your money for something better!!!! Haven't used it since purchase; worthless app!!!
Docs to Go with Exchange attachments is AWFUL

Awful!!! Do NOT buy. Sync does not work and after three days of run around with DataViz tech & much time wasted, it still does not work. DataViz will not refund. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!!!!

But after I signed up for the desktop app and gave you guys my email adress, I suddenly got crappy emails from companys wanting to sell me something or have me go to thier site to take some stupid quiz...."I am very dissapointed in you guys"...now am going to have to delete all of this spam from my inbox!

Rediculous!!! They put out a new update and it STILL does not support .docx sure it says that it "supports" .docx but when you add the file the format gets all messed up!!! Save your money!!! Very useful-Worth the price
Skycop542 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Still waiting on Excel editing features. Other than that I am very pleased. I use it daily and it speeds up my workday. I would like to see some of the goofy issues resolved that occur with the format of every Word doc being skewed on the iPhone. It's a real pain having to try to turn the phone and/or resize the image just to try to find the sweet spot, and ultimately guess, how the author of the original had it layed out. It makes it very difficult to know how the document will be layed out after you edit it and send it back out-usually it's a mess if you aren't careful. Also some more info in the help section or a how-to tutorial that's easily accessed would be helpful. I still give it 4 stars for now-5 when Excel Edit comes alive!!
Needs some work for better functionality
Ahikanana 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Great app, BUT there are 2 basic things I think needs work: 1) It needs a text finder for ALL file types. Right now I can search *.doc & *.txt files. I saw the preview for the Excel update & see that a text finder is also planned, but right now searching text in *.xls & *.pdf files is not possible. 2) In the file types where editing text is not currently possible including *.xls, *.pdf (haven't tried other file types yet) also prominently displays the horizontal status bars & it seems like you can't hide them like you can when working with *.doc & *.txt files. The reason why they're annoying is because in landscape mode they take up almost half the screen.
Finally Usable
deadstroke 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
When I first bought the 1.0 version I was really annoyed at how limited it was. The exchange server didn't work, no copying and paste outside of app and the horizontal orientation lag made this application absolutely worthless. I had to stick with lamo Quickoffice. A few days after purchasing I got a nice little email saying that they were going to give it a copy and paste update. I trust them way more than those crooks and Quickoffice so I gave the app a chance. I went to mail2go.com and bought an exchange compatible email for $4 a month (free for two months) and waited about a month and a half for the update. Boy was it worth the wait. With the Copy and Paste I can now copy things from Safari. They finally fixed the stupid lag so I can actually use it and the new layout design is very intuitive. This is the first time I have used this program and its very good. Add Excel editing and I will delete my Quickoffice program for good. I have two suggestions though: (1) the idea of a syncing app was cute in 1999 but get with the program no one uses desktop companions anymore it defeats the purpose of it being portable. If your on Wifi anyway turn it into a portable drive and unlock the USB option in a next update so you can use the desktop version without Wifi. (2) Another suggestion would be to allow POP mail access instead of exchange. If they can do that well I can just put away my computer for good. (3) Add system font support aside from Roman font. I hope this review was helpful.
Excel Editing's Here!!!

Good, but not perfect
Pelicanbeach 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
This app has strong points and weak points. I'm comparing it to Quickoffice--which also has its pros and cons. (I initially paid virtually no attention to Documents to Go as I had to have full Excel functionality. Once Excel became available, I purchased the app.) If the two apps would look at each other and copy all the strong points from the other, that would be the ideal Office app for the iPhone. The strong points for Documents to Go are it's speed and the user interface. I initially purchased Quickoffice and found the UI a bit clunky and the speed of loading (e.g., long Word docs) quite slow. Documents to Go is definitely a better perfomer in this regard. Docs load quickly, and I like the "go to" icon which allows you to quickly get to the start, middle or end of a document (rather than having to flick, flick, flick your way back to the top or bottom). All in all, the menu bar at the bottom of Docs to Go is slick and handy.
V.2 is great, still needs Gmail support!!
SteveinSC 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
Excellent update. Excel editor is really good. Really good. This is getting better and better. Don't listen to those claiming that D2G doesn't support DOCX. It absolutely does. I use it daily, and it is flawless. The formatting retention is genius! Only gripe - Now that Google is pushing email via Exchange server, PLEASE make D2G compatible so we can access atachments from Gmail!! I get "Error 501" - unsupported function from server. Please fix this!!!

Great update; finally, we can edit Excel spreadsheets; only flaw for me is the linking of cells between spreadsheets; Linked spreadsheets show #REF! in the specific cell linked to another spreadsheet; please correct in the next update. Easy to edit cells makes this the Perfect app; no need to shop for alternatives.
