'Doodle Army 2' Storms the App Store

I'll be the first to fully admit that I don't really get what made people so crazy about the original Doodle Army [99¢ / Free]. Regardless, the game spawned one of our most popular threads ever which has nearly 12,000 posts in it as of this writing. Its sequel, Doodle Army 2 [Free] hit the App Store last night, and once again, I still don't get it. (This still hasn't stopped the new thread from similarly exploding.) The second installment of Doodle Army has evolved quite a bit from its predecessor. Instead of just being side scrolling shooter type game, you have complete freedom of movement in two axises thanks to a handy limited-used rechargeable rocket boots. The buttons of the original have been replacement by a pair of virtual joysticks, one that handles your movement in any direction while another handles your shooting. Doodle Army 2 is the product of Read More

Finally the sequel to the great game, Doodle Army, is released, but this time with MULTIPLAYER! It's well worth the download and even the IAP which gives you the advantage in multiplayer with the sniper and rocket launcher. The controls are easy to use, and the game looks great. The survival mode is pretty good, but won't last that long without getting boring. My suggestions would be a campaign, retina support, and an avatar creator.
Good

I like it a lot.
Game is quite solid, needs a few more tweaks to take it up to Appstore classic.

Quick review: this game is a must download for arcade and multiplayer fans, and I'm sure it's gonna shoot to the top of the charts quickly. It's pretty much the next evolution of DinoRush online, for those that remember that game. Right now it's pretty fun, and I'm sure in time the developers will improve the game via updates. The boost mechanic and the right analog stick aiming mechanic is both thoughtful AND fun, shooting and aiming feel natural and the presentation is charming if not overly refined. That said, here's a few points I'll mention that I think could be taken into account with future updates. - I like the right analog mechanic. if you move it around a little within the small circle, you simply aim about, if you move it further out, you actually shoot while aiming. It's a neat idea. I wish you could adjust how far you need to push outside the small circle to shoot, cause I find myself having to stray a bit far. - picking up weapons and using items is a hassle. The icons are in the center of the screen, which is hard for thumbs to reach. Remember playing iDracula back in the day and struggling to change weapons in the middle of a fight? It's like that. And if you're right handed like me, the placement of the grenade icon near the left stick is a nightmare. They should be positioned closer to the thumbs, or at least the sides of the screen where I can reach them. Better yet, have them customizable so you can place them precisely where you want, like Gameloft controls. - get rid of either the melee or grenade icon, and relegate that function to tapping the empty screen. Essential take Gameloft's "swipe screen to move camera" mechanic, and instead have tapping the screen perform a function. It will lessen interface clutter. Personally, I like tapping the right hand side of the screen to melee. - Running over items like weapons should let you automatically pick them up, tapping the top icon to pick them up is an unnecessary step. - 10 seconds respawn time is WAY TOO LONG, especially for a mobile game where you want to get back quickly into the fight. Nova and Modern Combat has shorter respawn times. Seriously, reswpan times are shorter in HALO - think about that for a sec. 3-4 seconds is long enough. - needs ability to swap virtual stick positions for left handed players, ala Gameloft. - definitely needs a retina update. On my iPod Touch 4 it's a blurry mess. I'm gonna let the gameplay soak in for another day before I comment on it, but right now it's a 4/5 game. Good job.
Great Start!

I hate to leave out a Star but the aim/fire button to me could use a little tweaking. It's not a game-breaker but it's taking me a while to get use to it. I guess I've just become accustomed to the other 100+ Dual-Stick shooters I have. I wasn't so sure I'd like it playing the tutorial in the free version but with a little practice and determination, it turned out to be pretty awesome!! I love the corkiness of the characters and the cartoonish landscape. I really, really, really love how you can jet around. Reminds me of an old Star Wars game back when I had an N-64. I think it was "Shadows of the Empire". All in all the aim/fire needs some tweaking or I need to get used to the controls before I can give ***** 5 Stars

This game has everything that a game needs to play greatly. The online multiplayer is extremely fun and survival will test your skills at the game while preparing you for the online mayhem. More is sure to come in future updates, so dont think that you will be finished with new things in the game any time soon!
