A Voice App Unapologetically Unlike Siri
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Mar 2012 11:49:40 UTC +00:00
Siri is perfectly lovely bit of artificial intelligence, but she isn’t always cooperative. Ask Siri to book airplane tickets, make a dinner reservation or find a song on Pandora, and she politely declines. This is where Dragon Go comes in. It’s a less personable but more capable app for people who like to speak instructions to the phone. Dragon Go works differently from Siri. For one thing, it doesn’t talk back. You issue instructions and it carries them out. The other is that it tells you where it is getting its information. So if you ask it to book a table at a restaurant, it returns results from OpenTable, which you know because of what’s indicated in a tab at the top of the screen. Try asking Siri to book you a table at a specific restaurant, and the best you’ll get is a map with an unattributed star rating or, Read More

Dragon Go! for iPhone gets smarter by adding more services
Calendar16 Tue, 21 Feb 2012 13:10:00 UTC +00:00
Dragon Go! fron Nuance was already a great way to find information by voice on the iPhone. It's free, and I often used it as a demo to show what the iPhone could do. Then, along came Siri and it got the Lion's share of attention from users and the press. With a new version of Dragon Go!, released today, the app has gotten smarter and does a few things Siri can't do. The app has added one big source of travel information, Expedia. which gives it a competitive edge against Siri and newcomer Evi. As an example, I asked each app to find flights between Seattle and Las Vegas. Dragon Go! came up with the options quickly. Siri responded "I can't help you with flights. Sorry." Evi referred me to the web and provided a link, but couldn't get me there directly. Asking Dragon Go! to book a dinner reservation Read More
Alternative Apps to Siri for iPhone and iPod touch
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Feb 2012 00:30:37 UTC +00:00
Want Siri on your non-iPhone 4S device? Take a look at these alternatives in the App Store. Siri is amazing! It works flawlessly and since it was created by Apple, has full access to the iOS. This means it can do really powerful things like creating new reminders or sending out emails to contacts. Siri is also capable of carrying seemingly natural conversations with you. If you don’t have an iPhone 4S yet, there are a few iPhone and iPod touch apps popping out in the App Store to serve as alternatives for the time being. These apps try to duplicate and or imitate the features of the native Siri app on the iPhone 4S, although none of them come even close to being as effective. We’ve reviewed the 6 top voice recognition apps in the App Store that offer assistant like functionality, including SpeakToIt Assistant, Evi, Dragon Go, Vlingo, Voice Read More
It was a bit of a shock to learn yesterday that the terrific Siri app, now owned by Apple, will get pulled from the app store. It's being done, I'm sure, to encourage people to get the Siri technology built into the new iPhone 4S. Although an interview with the co-founder of Siri indicated that they had to cut some corners to get the app to work on "older" hardware. Still, it seems, shall we say, small of Apple to kill an app that seemed to work just fine, and did some of the tasks that the new incarnation of Siri will do on the iPhone 4S. One bright spot for those sticking with their current phones are the Dragon apps from Nuance. Dragon Dictation will take your voice and turn it into text for a note, an email, or a text message. Dragon Go!, which we have reviewed very positively, Read More
Dragon Go for iPhone gets smarter
Calendar16 Thu, 29 Sep 2011 14:30:00 UTC +00:00
Dragon Go!, the all-purpose voice recognition search app from Nuance, is getting a significant upgrade today. In fact, it's almost a preview of some of the functionality we suspect will be in iOS5. The free app lets you speak conversationally with your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Say things like "What's the best steakhouse in Kansas City", or "Find me some pictures of Lady Gaga", and the app will parse what you said and nearly always return useable results. The update, which should hit the App Store today, adds many more options, including the ability to launch popular movie and TV streaming services; get direct access to more of the most popular names in mobile content, like Spotify; get answers to the toughest of questions from Wolfram|Alpha and Ask.com; and, find friends on Google+. I tried some of the new functions, and was impressed. For instance, I said "Watch Mad Men Read More
The company behind the Dragon speech recognition applications for computers and iOS devices has announced a new developer program that will allow software to access Dragon Voice technology at no charge. It could result in a tidal wave of apps that harness the power of the Nuance speech recognition and text to speech technologies. Many of our readers have no doubt used Nuance tech in apps like Siri, and Dragon Go. I talked with Kenneth Harper, Senior Product Manager for Nuance, who says opening up the technology is a way to help Nuance become an even bigger standard in voice technology, as well as introduce developers to the company. Harper says that the free developer service, called NDEV Silver, will apply to about 90% of the app developers for iOS. Developers will also have free access to Nuance's connected text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities in over 30 languages, bringing natural sounding text-to-speech in Read More

Dragon Go! Makes iOS a Breeze
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Jul 2011 19:30:12 UTC +00:00
The app that I have been dreaming about for far too long. Have you ever been firing up your iPhone and felt so lazy that it seemed like drudgery to just fire up a necessary application?  For those us us that like to provide the least amount of effort necessary for every task, I present to you Dragon Go! Imagine being able to find the showtimes for the most recent Harry Potter flick by simply asking the iPhone “Harry Potter Showtimes.”  Dragon Go! is just that smart.  All you need to do is use a few keywords for the application, plus have a constantly connected 3G connection, and the tool handles all the rest. Gone are the days of the finger press, because this is the app I have been dreaming of for far too long.  On the other side of the effort coin this must also be a godsend for Read More
Best Free iPhone App of the Week: Dragon Go!
Calendar16 Sun, 17 Jul 2011 18:56:48 UTC +00:00
Dragon Go! for the iPhone (and iPod Touch) is a superb voice control app that lets you qucikly search for just about anything via voice. It’s a bit like Siri (which is also powered by Nuance) but it feels much faster and broader in its scope to me. Just the listing of sources it will show you instant results from is impressive in its own right, and includes: Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, Twitter, Yelp, CNN and other major news outlets, and more. The range of things you can say to get back excellent, spot-on relevant results is hugely impressive as well.  You can use it to search for apps, books, nearby businesses (with a single tap to call on the results list) events, maps and directions, movies, music, news, photos, restaurants, people on social networks, and more. Results are extremely intelligent and tend to nearly always get it right in terms of Read More

Dragon Go brings voice-powered search to iOS
Calendar16 Fri, 15 Jul 2011 17:54:18 UTC +00:00
The free Dragon Go app provides a wealth of relevant results from its voice-powered searches. For Nuance's next trick, Dragon Go turns your voice into a search engine. Just tap the Record button, say what you're looking for, and presto: the app runs a search. Wait a minute, doesn't the Google app do exactly the same thing? It does, but with decidedly Google-style results: Web, Images, Places, etc. Dragon Go incorporates a wide range of mobile sites. Thus, a search for singer Brendan Benson produces results from not only Google, but also Amazon, Pandora, Twitter, Wikipedia, YouTube, and even LiveNation. Search for a movie and you won't get LiveNation, but instead an IMDb entry and showtimes from Fandango. Restaurant searches give you Yelp listings, and so on. Wait a minute, doesn't the Bing app do exactly the same thing? Yes and no. Although it offers voice-powered search, the results are listed Read More

Beh, Dragon Go! scoverà in quali negozi nelle vostre vicinanze è in vendita e a quale prezzo. Il tutto con la solita precisione e affidabilità del voice-recognition di Nuance. Secondo l’opinione di molti, questo potrebbe essere un assaggio di quello che probabilmente accadrà grazie alla collaborazione tra Read More
Dragon Go! is a must-have voice search app for your iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jul 2011 06:40:00 UTC +00:00
Like the proverbial genie in the bottle, you can ask a lot of Dragon Go! and have a pretty good chance of the app granting your wish. Dragon Go! is the latest free app from Nuance, creators of Dragon Dictate for the Mac and Dragon Dictation for iOS devices. In this latest app, Nuance has delivered what they consider the next generation of voice search, and after several days of testing I have no reason to doubt it. Here's the deal. Speak just about anything to Dragon Go! and it will try to parse your meaning and bring up the right set of tools to complete your search. Ask for news about Libya, or news about Libya from the New York Times and the app complies. Ask for reservations for 2 at a favorite restaurant and Open Table is queried. Directions from your current location to the nearest hospital will launch Read More
