iSource Picks of the Year
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 04:33:04 UTC +00:00
This week we are changing things up a little.  We wanted to make this a special post where we pay tribute to 2011 by selecting that one app, accessory, piece of hardware, etc that we couldn’t live without.  Hopefully many of our favorite items will also be yours. However, if they’re not, please feel free to comment on our selections, and suggest picks of your own. Check out this year’s picks after the break. iOS 5.0 My Pick of the Year is iOS5.  After long and careful consideration I’ve decided that this piece of software is the thing that most delighted my iLife this year. Although I do not each feature or app daily and despite the fact that many things are still a work in progress (iMessage I’m looking at you!) this is thing that Apple can be most proud of birthing this year (yes even above iPad2 and Lion). Mittler zwischen zwei Welten: ‘DropboxAutomator’
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:04:09 UTC +00:00

Best of 2011 nominations: iPhone productivity apps
Calendar16 Mon, 19 Dec 2011 04:00:00 UTC +00:00

The winner in each category receives the highly-coveted title of TUAW Best of 2011. Today's category for TUAW Best of 2011 nominations is iPhone productivity apps. Well, according to the App Store on the evening of December 18, 2011, there were a total of 6,464 apps in the productivity category. Will Apple's Pages ($9.99), Numbers ($9.99), or Keynote ($9.99) take the prize? Evernote (free) works on the iPhone as well, and it was Read More
Mac OS X Hints has discovered that Macs running OS X Lion and registered with iCloud have a hidden "drop box" in the user's Library folder that allows for easy document and file syncing between Macs. A folder within ~/Library (which Lion hides by default) called "Mobile Documents" contains iWork documents synced with iOS devices via iCloud (something our own Erica Sadun discovered quite a while ago.) "What is of use is that any files put into the ~/Library/Mobile Documents folder will automatically upload to iCloud and push to any other Mac you have that is signed in to the same iCloud account and has the 'Document & Data' iCloud preference checked," says Mac OS X Hints member CHM. "Lion even notifies you of version conflicts and allows you to resolve them when you open the document." This functionality is broadly similar to the third-party file syncing service Dropbox, but having Read More
By Seth Clifford, Wednesday, Oct 26, 2011 | Since I began using smartphones in 2004, they’ve become an indispensable part of my daily workflow. When I bought my first iPhone (a 3G in 2008), that workflow changed immensely, and for the better. The wide variety of apps available for the platform and the connected nature of the tools Apple provides make iOS a very compelling choice for managing many aspects of our business. At Nickelfish, I do a lot of different things, but a large part of my daily routine is maintenance of all our systems, both user desktops and laptops as well as our online accounts, backups, and services. I use a combination of apps to manage all of this easily. 1Password syncing to Dropbox means I have all the information for everyone’s accounts as well as software licenses and secure notes at my fingertips. I use Screens to monitor Read More

Homescreens – Oktober 2011 (iPhone + iPad)
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Oct 2011 09:09:11 UTC +00:00
Außerdem verstecken sich in Read More
Great Apps for College Students
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Sep 2011 17:30:48 UTC +00:00
By Bonnie Eisenman on September 12th, 2011 As a college student, my iPod goes with me everywhere. Here are some apps sure to help any college student with their busy life. From textbook apps to alarm clocks, iPhones and iPads can change the way students live and study. iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads abound on college campuses, and for good reason. iOS devices are great anyway, but for college students, there are myriad ways in which an iOS device can make life easier. When it comes to studying textbooks, taking notes in lecture, or even waking up to start the day—chances are there’s an app for that. There are far too many useful apps to count, but here I’d like to list just a few apps sure to help college students manage their busy lives. Textbooks Paper textbooks may still be king, but e-readers are increasingly creating a presence in college Read More
7notes is a note-taking/handwriting recognition app for the iPad. It costs US$8.99; there is also a $4.99 iPhone version, along with feature-limited free versions. I spent several hours using the iPad paid version (7notes Premium) and found it did an excellent job of recognizing both my cursive words and individual letters, all done with my finger on the iPad screen. Handwriting recognition is not a trivial task, and 7notes has a very smart recognition engine. The app also has a predictive engine which worked quite well, figuring out my scrawl and giving me some words that matched the context of what I was writing. When there is more than one guess, you just tap the word you want. As you write, you can also add freehand graphics, with some choice of color and thickness of the stroke. I was able to easily add arrows and other simple symbols or diagrams. You Read More
App for That: How to send videos to the cloud

However, I’m only going to take my 16GB iPhone (and clothes and stuff), so was wondering if there was an app that would let me store the videos when I ran out of room, as I can’t put it on a computer or anything. Dropbox Updates with Bulk Photo and Video Uploading
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Apr 2011 18:01:22 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 11:01 am.   Dropbox, the de facto cross-platform file syncing utility, has received a much-needed update on the App Store. Version 1.4 adds the ability to batch upload photos and videos, as well as the option to upload files from Mail and other outside applications. A dedicated “Uploads” tab has been added to the interface to keep track of uploaded files, and non-English speakers will be glad to know that Dropbox now supports a few additional languages. What’s New in Version 1.4 ● Support for Spanish, French, German, and Japanese ● Return to tab-based interface for simpler app navigation experience ● Improved file uploading experience: ● New dedicated Uploads tab ● Bulk upload photos and videos ● Import files from Mail and other apps for upload to Dropbox ● Numerous bug fixes Read More
Yes, yes, yes! Finally, the DropBox app for the iPhone is actually useful! We don’t usually make it a habit of covering app updates on iDB, because if we did, we’d spend all day talking about them. But this is too exciting of an update for me to ignore; this is something that I’ve been wanting since DropBox’s inception on the App Store. The new ability to bulk upload photos and videos, takes what was in my opinion a novelty iPhone app, and instantly turns it into an absolute must have… Prior to this update, using DropBox as a method of sharing photos was an extremely laborious process. You had to select a file to upload, wait for it to upload, select your next file to upload, wait for it to upload, rinse, wash, and repeat. This serial method of sharing photos was not only time consuming, it was in effect Read More
Dropbox app updated as the service hits 25 million users
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Apr 2011 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
Dropbox has quickly become the must-have app and service for many people. Launched in 2007, about the same time as the original iPhone, Dropbox is a wonderful way to synchronize files between computers of all types. According to Michael Arrington at TechCrunch, the company is announcing that Dropbox now has 25 million users, up from just 4 million a year ago. The numbers are astounding -- over 200 million files are saved to Dropbox daily, about a million every five minutes. Concurrent with the announcement of this user milestone, Dropbox has updated its self-named app to version 1.4. Part of the update brings the action buttons (Dropbox, Favorites, Uploads, Settings) back to the bottom of the user interface in a tabbed fashion, but the new version of the app improves on the way that uploads from the iOS app are handled. It's now possible to upload many photos and videos from Read More

Dropbox in v1.4 mit Massen-Upload
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Apr 2011 14:14:56 UTC +00:00

10 Things You Never Knew You Could Do On Your iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 08 Apr 2011 18:40:32 UTC +00:00
What is usually the first thing everyone that gets a new iPad wants to know? Which apps to get. But there are still some cool things that you can do with your iPad, even without buying a single app.  I’m not talking about well-known features like Multitasking, Folders, Airplay, Airprint, or even the new HD Mirroring capability of the iPad 2. Instead, here are ten, hidden in plain sight, secret features of the iPad 2. You maybe aware of one or two, but let’s see if you knew about all ten. There are several ways you can access your media collection from your iPad.  The first and easiest is to sync your library from iTunes.  However, if you have enabled Home Sharing in iTunes on your Mac, you can also access your entire iTunes Library on your Mac while connected to the same Wi-Fi network.  To access your Home Sharing library from the iPad Read More
Wither iPad? A Testimonial On Its Usefulness
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Mar 2011 17:45:00 UTC +00:00
(image source: Apple, Inc) With the release of the iPad 2, there has been a lot of commentary on the overall usefulness of the iPad. Even amongst the iSource staff, there is some debate as to whether or not the iPad is a truly useful device, or merely an expensive toy. Here’s my take. When the iPad was announced a year ago, I had no plans at all to buy it. Like many others, I concluded that it was little more than a large iPod Touch; and I simply didn’t see a need for one, especially considering that I had a perfectly usable iPhone. When my friend Mike got one, I played around with it a bit; but ultimately, I came to the same conclusion – a big iPod. Much later, when I started traveling for work again, I finally realized how useful the iPad could be and decided to take Read More

For Mac users, the desktop file download size has been reduced by 20 percent and the user interface has been vastly improved.  Dropbox also asserts that the computer memory allocation has been reduced by 50 percent.  Most significantly, users are now offered the option of Selective Sync.  Each platform linked to the Dropbox account now has its own preference pane, allowing the user to designate which files are synced on each selected computer.  Work files may be synced with work computers while other files, such as music or games, may be synced with more recreationally geared devices. Dropbox is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile devices including the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android.  2 GB of storage is free, and users can Read More

Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)
Calendar16 Sat, 11 Dec 2010 10:35:56 UTC +00:00
Außerdem verstecken sich innerhalb der Ordner folgende Apps*: Amazon.de (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Convertbot (1.59 €; App Store-Link), AnalyticsPro (5.49 €; App Store-Link), Delivery Status touch (3.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), Dropbox (kostenlos; universal; App Store-Link), iCabMobile (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Skype (kostenlos; App Store-Link), WeatherPro (2.99 €; App Store-Link), Pastebot (2.99 €; App Store-Link), LogMeIn (23.99 €; universal; App Store-Link), OffMaps (1.59 €; universal; App Store-Link), Kik (kostenlos; App Store-Link), PayPal (kostenlos; App Store-Link), Linkie (0.79 Read More
Free App Friday: Living in the Cloud

Posted 12/10/2010 at 2:46pm | by Florence Ion Here at Mac|Life, we really do love free apps. We love loading up our iOS devices with seriously utilitarian apps that live in the cloud, too. Here's a look at some of our favorite cloud applications that work across ALL platforms--Mac, iPhone and iPad. If you're not a part of drop box, you are seriously missing out on one of the most helpful services we've ever used. The service plants a folder on your hard drive that syncs across all computers using the service. The mobile app lets you view your documents and even play a song on the go. If you've got MobileMe, there's no reason not to access it on your iOS device. iDisk lets you view and share your MobileMe files, as well as view iWork, Office, Quicktime and PDF files. Among the 16 iPhone updates that greeted me this morning was version 1.3.1 of the free Dropbox app, which adds improved photo support and a number of bug fixes. A quick jog through the release notes shows that iOS 4.2 compatibility was a major contributor to the update, particularly since it is expected that the new OS will arrive shortly. Photos are now handled differently than they have been in earlier versions. There is persistent photo caching, which means that standard image file formats (not PDFs) are cached on the device for quick viewing of photos even after leaving the app and returning. Previously, PNG and GIF images were JPEG compressed when they were viewed on the device -- the update turns off the compression for better image quality. On devices with Retina displays, thumbnails of images are now much higher quality. One of the features listed is "improved scroll bar Read More

9 iPhone Apps for Managing the Recruiting Process
Calendar16 Tue, 02 Nov 2010 14:30:45 UTC +00:00
This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Typically when businesses decide they need to hire someone, they want to hire as soon as possible. So, time is of the essence in getting the position filled (with the right person, of course). When a single open job listing can yield hundreds of candidates, being able to manage the recruiting process becomes key. Neither companies nor candidates want to be burdened with a bunch of administration. Instead of creating new processes or downloading a bunch of new apps, here are some iPhone apps you might already have that can help you manage the recruiting process. Let us know in the comments below which mobile apps you use to streamline your company’s recruiting process. You’re at a networking event and meet someone who might be a good Read More

The truth is that the iPad, or any other iOS device for that matter, can be used for fun, but more importantly you will probably find a use for them at any job. Therefore, after many queries and questions about apps that I use for work, I thought it might be a good time to share some of them with you. So this week, I'll give you four app recommendations that will show you how to add a second display to your Mac, access computers remotely, store and access your data in the cloud, manage and view files of all kinds, Read More

Dropbox introduces App Directory, adds caching to iOS app

We'll spare you the raves about Dropbox being the perfect cross-platform cloud storage solution and cut right to the latest updates that make it even more awesome. Dropbox has just introduced an App Directory, listing apps on all platforms that play nicely with Dropbox. This includes everything from password storage solution 1Password to Android's UiA contact backup app to ... BlackBerry apps?! Okay, there are only two BlackBerry apps in the directory so far, but it's still amazing how versatile Dropbox is. Meanwhile, the iPhone/iPad version of Dropbox just received a crucial update that includes caching of downloaded files, so you don't have to burn your bandwidth redownloading that 50-meg PDF every time you want to view it. File transfers also work in the background now, which makes the app twice as useful. Note: Please don't put Dropbox referral links in the comments. Dropbox updates iOS apps, announces App Directory
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Sep 2010 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
The Dropbox app for iPhone and iPad has been updated recently. There's a UI redesign in there now that takes full advantage of the Retina Display, so your shared files will look better than ever. The iPad version has gained a landscape view, and the app will now finish uploads and downloads in the background. Dropbox also allows file caching now, so once you've viewed a file, you won't have to go back and in and re-download it again. I presume that means only while the app is running -- if you have to actually close the app for any reason, . [Update: No, cached files remain accessible even without network access. –Ed.] But you can find out for yourself because the Dropbox app is free (as long as you sign up for a free account with their excellent service). The company has also released something called the App Directory, which Read More

Calendar16 Thu, 05 Aug 2010 15:50:41 UTC +00:00
The iPad should be number one on every college student’s wish list. It’s pretty light weight and easy to carry, and with the diverse selection of apps available, you can really get more out of it than carrying your laptop to class. Our last feature in the 2010 Back to School Buyer’s Guide series is a look at some great accessories for the iPad. $69, Apple Store Touch screens are great, but extended periods of typing on them can be problematic. The Apple Keyboard and Dock is a great solution to help display your iPad while you type notes. If you have a different stand preference, you can buy the Apple Wireless Keyboard separately (for the same price) and use it with your iPad or any other Bluetooth-enabled Mac. $29, Apple Store These two adapters will allow you to plug your SD card or USB camera directly into your iPad and Read More

Dropbox 1.2.3. for iPhone: local document export on iOS 4

Dropbox can now export files to iPhone apps that support them (wow, vague much, Thomas?). This mean that you can tap on a PDF in Dropbox, bring up the context menu (bottom right), and then export said PDF to Stanza or iBooks (does that clear things up?!). iPad Office Suites: Quickoffice or Documents To Go
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:03:10 UTC +00:00
When the iPad was announced, Steve touted the virtues of how wonderful it would be to have iWork on your iPad. We at TheAppleBlog were unimpressed with Pages, Numbers and Keynote. You can read the full reviews for details, but our primary complaints revolved around the difficulty of getting documents on and off the iPad and syncing with the cloud. If all you want is iWork files primarily on your iPad, no need to look beyond the iWork Suite for the iPad. However, iPhone users have been working with their spreadsheets, documents, and presentations in the cloud for a while with the iPhone versions of Documents To Go and Quickoffice and got used to not being locked into the iWork file format. Now that the iPad versions of these apps are finally out, which one is right for you? Let’s review the features first. Documents to Go for the iPhone was Read More
The Best iOS 4-Ready Apps So Far
Calendar16 Sat, 19 Jun 2010 23:14:14 UTC +00:00
We all know that the iPhone 4 launches this coming Thursday. But on Monday, current iPhone users get an early treat in the form of iOS 4, the new iPhone operating system (formerly known as iPhone OS 4). It comes with several enhancements, but the ones people seem most excited about involve multitasking (or background tasks). A little over a week ago, Apple began urging developers to submit their iOS 4-ready app, and a number of them have. And actually, some have already been approved, or will be shortly. The component that all of these apps share is the ability to do fast app switching. What you may traditionally think of as multitasking isn’t the same on iOS 4. Multiple apps aren’t running all of their functions in the background at once — obviously, this would take up resources and eat up battery life. Instead, Apple allows third-party apps to do Read More

Dropbox Leads the Charge for iOS 4 Compatible Updates

Posted 06/17/2010 at 6:27am | by J.R. Bookwalter Monday, June 21 is coming up in a few days, and with it Apple will bring the iOS 4 update for existing iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod touch (second & third generation only) devices. That means that iOS 4 compatible updates are starting to appear in the App Store, and among them is Dropbox, now at 1.2.2. If you’re already a fan of Dropbox, the easiest way to sync and share your files online and across computers or iDevices, the new about iOS 4 compatibility will be no doubt most welcome. Whether you’re updating your existing iPhone 3G or 3GS or iPod touch (second or third generation) to iOS 4 on Monday when Apple makes it available or holding off for your swanky new iPhone 4 to arrive in one week, Dropbox is ready for you. Eerste iOS 4-applicaties in de App Store verschenen
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Jun 2010 19:56:00 UTC +00:00
Read More

MobileDL uses Simplenote to download files to your Mac
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Jun 2010 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you've ever been on your iPhone and wished you could save a file to your Mac, your wish just came true thanks to Scott Jackson and MobileDL. Saving files to your Mac from your iPhone/iPad is now as easy as copying the URL and pasting it into Simplenote iPhone/iPad app (free) or a Simplenote web account (also free). MobileDL runs on your Mac's menu bar and periodically (default is every 10 minutes) checks a note in your Simplenote account called "MobileDL Downloads" and downloads any file listed there. If the note isn't there, MobileDL automatically creates it for you. One URL per line of any kind of file: ".mp4, .mov, .mp3, .zip, .dmg, .app, .pdf, if it's a file on the web, MobileDL can download it." Even HD YouTube videos are supported. There is a short screencast available which shows how it works. I went into MobileDL's "Advanced" preferences and Read More
TinyGrab for iPhone helps you share pics over the cloud
Calendar16 Fri, 28 May 2010 17:01:05 UTC +00:00
TinyGrab started off as a simple image sharing cloud service for Windows and Mac OSX, but now it, too, has an iPhone app. It’s only $1.99 and requires no subscription to use, but I can’t, for the life of me, think of any reason to use it. TinyGrab specializes in taking your pictures, uploading them to the cloud, and then providing you with a tiny URL for sharing purposes. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Twitter apps, the Dropbox iPhone app, Pastebot, and Evernote can already accomplish something similar. I use Pastebot for throwing pictures from my iPhone to my Mac, Dropbox or Twitter for quickly sharing pictures through Tiny URLs, and Evernote for saving important pictures of receipts. I feel a little bad about passing the app up, since I was able to grab a free Pro account through one of the MacHeists, but it’s offering something I simply don’t Read More
The iPad Is Da/Arrivé/Here/Qui – Here Is How To Start

There you go, Apple has officially launched the iPad in 9 new countries today. Well, the iPad actually didn’t wait on Apple to go around the world, and one in four iPads bought in the US has already flown the country by now. Also, an important amount of pre-orders has already been delivered early throughout the week, so the launch is not really that much of a massive event. Anyway, for our international readers who just got their iPad, here is some help for you. Short after unpacking and starting the device, you’re going to feel like you don’t know what to do with it. This feeling is not going to leave right away as it takes a couple days to get used to this new toy. What you’re going to need are apps, and that’s where the fun starts: I would tell you to start with some free apps, so you Read More
One district attorney's journey to iPad happiness
Calendar16 Fri, 21 May 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Let's face it. Apple and the legal profession have not always enjoyed a terribly close relationship. Since the advent of the word processor, being a lawyer practically required a PC. Lawyers' slavish dedication to Corel's Word Perfect, long after everybody else had stopped using it, is the stuff of legend. Database management programs were typically proprietary things, all requiring networks of PCs. Using a Mac in this environment required, at best, many workarounds, and, at worst, a separate PC to access various schedulers, run conflict checks and access documents. Recently, e-filing and the need to share and trade digital documents allowed for greater platform-independence. Macs, iPhones and now iPads claim their share of diehard legal adherents; you can get stories from the front lines of Apple integration in law from sites like The Mac Lawyer, MacAttorney, EsquireMac, the Disability Law Blog and the MacLaw mailing list. The legal world's growing acceptance Read More

Weekend Project: iPad Productivity in the Cloud
Calendar16 Sun, 09 May 2010 16:00:04 UTC +00:00
As a heavy user of Google Docs, both for work and personal activities, I was initially disappointed to see a lack of iPad support for the cloud-based productivity suite. Given the connectivity options of Wi-Fi or 3G, the large but portable display of the Apple’s device appears perfectly suited for light editing of Google Docs. Unfortunately, Google has been slow to add edit capabilities in mobile browsers, and those it has added are fairly limited. So not long after my iPad arrived, I began my search for a Google Docs editor — after all, there’s an app for that, right? As a matter of fact, there is. I stumbled across an app called Office2 Pro and although the software had some initial shortcomings, it indeed allows for Google Docs editing directly on an iPad, and with recent updates, is a solid tool. Using it, I can connect to Google Docs via both Read More

Dropbox Gets Mobile API, Android and iPad Clients
Calendar16 Thu, 06 May 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
The team at file-sharing, syncing and storage service Dropbox have unveiled new native clients for Android and the iPad to complement the existing iPhone app. The Android client has been available as a beta for a few months now — Kevin over at jkOnTheRun liked it when he took it for a test drive. A BlackBerry client was also announced, which will be released “quite soon.” The company also announced a new API, “Dropbox Anywhere,” that will enable developers to integrate Dropbox’s functionality into their own mobile apps. This is significant in that it proposes to make it easier for developers to get documents onto and off of mobile devices like the iPad, replacing clunky workarounds like having to email files to yourself. You can expect to see more cloud sharing/storage functionality popping up in your mobile apps soon (and if you’re interested in cloud computing, check out our Structure conference Read More
By: Clint Boulton 2010-05-06 Article Rating: / 3 Cloud file storage startup Dropbox broadened its reach May 4 by adding support for Google's Android, Apple's iPad and Research In Motion's BlackBerry mobile platforms. Dropbox already supports Apple's iPhone. The latest offering is couched in Dropbox Anywhere, new mobile apps and APIs geared to help users access their files on most computing devices or mobile applications. Anywhere provides native support for accessing, viewing and sharing documents and files stored in Dropbox directly from Android and BlackBerry smartphones, as well as Apple's popular iPad tablet. Dropbox is tailored to match each of the devices. For example, users may capture, upload and share photos and video on Android, or enjoy a full-screen reading experience on the iPad tablet, which has sold more than 1 million units in less than a month. ReadWriteWeb has a glowing report on Dropbox for the iPad here. Dropbox for Android and Read More
If you don't have Dropbox yet, where have you been? We've raved about this awesome cloud-based storage service before, and now Dropbox's mobile offerings are expanding in a big way. The Dropbox Mobile API was just released, along with apps for Android and iPad. This new push is called Dropbox Anywhere, and it's great news for users. With the new mobile API, developers will be able to write apps that access your Dropbox files, meaning you won't have to keep the files stored on your mobile device. Sure, you can complain that Dropbox doesn't have apps for enough devices yet, or that there's no automatic syncing for the Android app, but what Dropbox has built so far is a pretty big deal, and it's still a work in progress. Blackberry users, take note: a Dropbox app is coming to your device soon (probably this summer!). Read More
Online storage service Dropbox this week released a new set of mobile apps and an API. The offering, dubbed Dropbox Anywhere, will allow users to access their files on more smartphones and allow developers to create apps that access Dropbox content. Users can now access Dropbox data on the iPad and Android-based phones. Android devices, Dropbox said, will let users capture, upload, and share photos and video on Android, while the iPad will provide a full screen reading experience, the company said. All data will be synched between devices. The iPad and Android app, as well as the existing iPhone app, are available for download now at dropbox.com/anywhere. A BlackBerry app is expected this summer. The API, meanwhile, will let developers create apps that access the content of Dropbox users' accounts. More information is available at developers.dropbox.com. "With the innovation and growth in mobile computing, the industry is shifting from a Read More
Dropbox is getting more serious about its efforts to bring its cloud storage solution to mobile devices. On Tuesday the company is announcing a mobile API for developers to build ties to Dropbox's servers into their own apps, as well as formally launching first-party applications for the iPad and Android and BlackBerry devices. The new mobile API is something Dropbox is calling "Dropbox Anywhere." The company has worked with a number of developers to integrate their apps into the new data pipeline. These include Fuze's FuzeMeeting app, Dictamus, Air Sharing, GoodReader, QuickOffice and Sprite Mobile's backup tool. All of these apps are able to tap into a user's Dropbox storage to fetch data, and save it back without needing to use any of that device's local data. Now any developer will be able to do the same with their own mobile software. Competitor Box.net rolled out something very similar back in Read More
The Dropbox team updated the Dropbox app today with full iPad compatibility and the option to choose which app will open a document. It's a very welcome refresh for an application that many users (myself included) depend on. As usual, the app is free. Let's look at the improvements. First of all, the cosmetic changes. While in the landscape orientation, Dropbox offers the same split view that Mail and several others use. Pictures and documents look great and legible on the large screen. Across the toolbar are icons to jump to your favorites, adjust your account settings, email a public link to a file (or copy it to the clipboard), mark a file as a favorite and finally choose an app to open a file. In portrait orientation the sidebar disappears and you're left with a full-screen view of your document and a few icons at the top. It looks super. Read More

Dropbox Comes to iPad

Dropbox, the file storage, sharing and sync service, is now available for the iPad. With an early morning update to the company's iPhone application, the free Dropbox app is now a "universal" app, a term that describes single apps that resize and reformat themselves to function properly on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. With the updated version of Dropbox installed, iPad users can access all their stored files and folders without having to sync files via iTunes first, as is necessary with Apple's own iWork suite of office applications. Those files can then be viewed in Dropbox itself or opened using third-party software programs . Dropbox has been a favorite app of ours for years. Way back in 2008, we named it one of our top five favorite online storage services, and, unlike a few others on that early list, this app has withstood the test of time. For those Read More

This is just a quick update to inform other JotNot users that the app now properly interfaces with Dropbox, the cloud-based folder syncing service for your Mac or PC. The news came directly from someone at Dropbox and I can confirm that I was able to log right into my account. All you need to do is enter your username (e-mail address) and password once and then throw your scanned document into the Dropbox folder of your choice. You can’t create new folders from within JotNot, but there’s always the free, official Dropbox app for that. This latest update brings the number of services that JotNot can interface with up to five: Evernote, Box.net. WebDAV/iDisk, Google Docs, and Dropbox. Very cool. Read More

As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch, and soon… iPad!) related, they’re fair game. Confession: in all the iPad hubbub last week, Rene didn’t get around to posting everyone’s pick. Bright side, you get almost twice as many this week! So who’s on deck this double-dose and what are our picks? Find out after the break! Apple’s new MobileMe Gallery app is awesome. Yet another use for Dropbox: USB cable
Calendar16 Fri, 11 Dec 2009 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
As a seasoned world traveler and Apple geek, I'm always fascinated to see how others in the Mac and iPhone community make lemonade from lemons when they encounter difficulties on the road. The Mac Observer's Jeff Gamet was recently in Italy (and may still be there) and from the sound of a recent post, he must have arrived well before part of his luggage did. The result? He had a lot of photos on his iPhone that needed to be moved to his Mac, and didn't have a USB cable to link the two. His solution? Use Dropbox and the hotel's Wi-Fi connection instead of emailing photos and then saving the attached photos to a folder on your Mac. The simple answer involves making sure that you have a Dropbox account (doesn't everybody?), the Dropbox iPhone app [Free, iTunes Link], and access to a Wi-Fi network. Within the Dropbox app, tap Read More

Now thatwould be a holiday miracle. We're used to an iPhone dock being something that sits on your desk and keeps your iPhone charged and connected to your Mac for syncing. Dexim's P-Flip Foldable Power Dock does that, but it also has a built-in rechargeable 2000mAh backup battery, so you can take the whole dock with you -- it folds up nicely, too -- and use it either way. Dropbox Launches Free iPhone App
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Nov 2009 15:00:37 UTC +00:00
Received an email this morning from the good folks at Dropbox. The news? They’ve released a Dropbox iPhone app… Cool! The app is of course free, and offers access to your Dropbox while you’re on-the-go. Access, view and download your files right from your iPhone for offline viewing. Take new photos or videos and sync them to your Dropbox… Or even share links to files in your Dropbox, all from the convenience of your iPhone. In case you’ve never heard of Dropbox before, here’s the official skinny: Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers. Put your files into your Dropbox on one computer, and they’ll be instantly available on any of your other computers that you’ve installed Dropbox on (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!) Because a copy of your files are stored on Dropbox’s secure servers, you can also access them from any computer or mobile Read More

Dropbox App Updated – Now Compatible with iPhone OS 3.0
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Oct 2009 19:14:50 UTC +00:00
From the Dropbox Blog: Big announcement:  the iPhone app is now available for 3.0! Go get it Other stuff: We initially opted for 3.1 because API methods related to saving videos were not available on 3.0. This meant that videos taken within the app would be permanently lost in the event of a flaky/slow internet connection. This happened to us enough in testing that we felt it wasn ‘t a risk we wanted to expose to our users. That said, Will, the maestro of our iPhone app, deftly crafted a solution for this problem. The result is what you see in the app store today! Will also says that there will be plenty of bug fixes to come in the future, as well as a huge feature push when 1.5 arrives. Good stuff. If the lack of 3.0 support was preventing you from getting some Dropbox goodness on your iPhone, this Read More
[tipp] Automatischer Datei-Sync für Online-Abruf
Calendar16 Tue, 06 Oct 2009 14:14:55 UTC +00:00
Read More

Dropbox has been one of those extremely useful online tools for me over the past couple years and keeps getting better as time goes on. For those of you who aren\'t familiar with the program, it basically is a file sharing app. Once installed onto a couple computers, it then creates a folder on each user\'s system and syncs any files that are added into the folder. So basically it\'s like you have a shared folder only over the internet. Well now the team has brought the app to the iPhone so you can easily view all your files and even send files into it as well right from your phone. I personally use it to share pictures with my girlfriend or to get files to my brother that don\'t want to take the time to send an email for. With it now on the iPhone, I can view all my Read More

I can ‘t think of a better way to describe Dropbox than that.  It really is the best and easiest to use sync / backup tool I ‘ve ever seen.  I love using it on the Mac, and now it has come to the iPhone. The iPhone app follows the simple and elegant theme pretty well, and works like a charm for me so far.  Sync between my Mac and iPhone is virtually instant. Up to now, I have used Dropbox on the Mac primarily for backup “ so I didn ‘t have an awful lot of files that I would need to view on the iPhone.  Now that I have the iPhone app though, I may well use it as a quick sharing method for photos / docs between the two.  It offers a simpler, quicker way to flash files back and forth from iPhone to Mac (or PC) than Read More
Dropbox released for the iPhone

The extremely popular document sync/sharing service Dropbox has released its awaited iPhone application into the App Store for free. The app also interestingly requires iPhone OS 3.1, and offers users quite a bit of on-the-go access to accounts and syncing content while on the move. App features from the app listing: * Access your Dropbox on the go * View your files * Download files for offline viewing * Take photos and videos and sync them to your Dropbox * Share links to files in your Dropbox * Photo galleries * Sync downloaded files so they’re up-to-date Dropbox has 3 levels or ‘tiers’ of service, each with increasing amounts of space: Basic (2 GB, Free), Pro 50 (50 GB, $9.99/month), and Pro 100 (100 GB, $19.99/month). We anticipate 2GB to be plenty for many average people. Posted on Oct 1st, 2009 by Maggie Mills in iPhone Apps | No Comments Related Read More
Three ways to stream movies to your iPhone

MSpot's new Mobile Movies service works in the iPhone's browser--no app required. Sure, you can now download movies straight from iTunes to your iPhone, but those cost money and consume valuable storage space. Sometimes it's faster, cheaper, and more convenient to stream them, whether from your own PC, online storage, or even an on-demand service. Here's a look at three such options for streaming the big screen to your small screen: So, what do you think of these solutions? Obviously they're no good for watching movies on airplanes, but what about on trains? In a car? In a bar? With a cat or on a mat? Of course, if you know of a better way to stream feature-length video to your iPhone, let's hear it! Read More

There are a lot of file-sharing and file-storage services out there offering complementary iPhone apps to help you keep tabs on your cloud-stored media. But, none of them are as good as Dropbox. The popular online storage service has just launched a new iPhone app that not only keeps you connected to your media, but also lets you stream your music and videos to the iPhone! Dropbox (iTunes link), for those of you not yet in-the-know, is one of the more popular cloud-based file storage and sharing services on the web. Dropbox: Now Native On Your iPhone

Of all the file syncing solutions available, one of the most popular is Dropbox. As one of the solutions that is also cross-platform compatible, many Mac users have embraced Dropbox as a more reliable and robust solution than other alternatives, like MobileMe’s iDisk. Diehard Dropbox users can now rejoice as the Dropbox team is at it once again with the release of a native iPhone app, allowing users to access their dropbox on the go. For a while, Dropbox has provided users with an iPhone-optimized web site for accessing their contents on the go, but that left many users desiring more. Dropbox the iPhone app has dropped

If you've been waiting patiently for the Dropbox app [iTunes link] to hit the App Store, your wait is over. The app has arrived, and brings with it the simplicity that Dropbox users have come to know and love. Since Dropbox itself is a free service, it's a pleasant surprise to see a simple, easy method for creating a new Dropbox account right off the bat if you don't happen to already have one. The app just asks for a name, e-mail address and password, prompts you to accept the terms of service, and creates the account. During my testing, I did encounter a problem where I would receive a nondescript "Account creation failed (null). Please try again." message, which I'm guessing may be due to high load on their servers. Still, this is not an encouraging encounter for new users. Once logged in, everything worked pretty smoothly. This is an amazing addition to the iPhone. Simple incredible. I've been a user of getDropbox.com for about a month now and have found the online/computer solution invaluable. Now, this iPhone app has just extended its capabilities. I've gotten into the habit of saving files to my Dropbox... for example, I'm about to board a plane, so I printed my itinerary as a PDF and saved it directly to my Dropbox. It *immediately* was on my iPhone (and viewable.) Genius. A wonderful app, and a wonderfully free service. I highly recommend signing up.

More than what I had expected
SCARZ99 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is perfect! Being able to browse all of my files and open most of them is great. Been using Dropbox since it launched and loving every new feature.
Won't install on 3.0.1
Bay sail 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can upgrade to 3.1 beacuse of Exchange mail issues. Seems like a great idea for an APP I just wish I could use it.
Why do I need 3.1?
dustinporchia.com 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I didn't know you needed 3.1 for this. It's a great web service but have no idea why they are shutting out everyone who doesn't have the latest update for the iphone/ipod. I'll change the rating if they ever correct this.
NOT 3.0??!!
Gabituuuuuu 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
To my surprise this app only runs on fw 3.1, does someone undertands this???
Loved the app but cant use on 3.0 is a BS...
Swapnilsa 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I dont have 3.1 and so I cant use it!!!.... I am not sure if dropbox decided to do this or its Apple's issue as this is my second app to do that after Yelp....
3.1 Only
Minute Dreamer 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Dropbox requires OS 3.1. There's no reason for this. Support 3.0!
NOO!!!!
Sanctif 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not 3.1!! 3.1 is crap.. :( I was so excited to use this app... till ti says I need 3.1! :(
ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! DROPBOX IS AWESOME BUT WHY IS 3.1 REQUIRED!!!
nupr 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Dropbox requires 3.1? There are reasons I can't download 3.1 and I've been checking everyday for Dropbox because I love it, but to require 3.1? Guys, change this please!
Only for 3.1
Just Bob Pro 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I want this app on my phone so bad. I would even check for it a few times a week. Now that it's here I can't use it. It needs to support at least 3.0 if not 2.1.1 for iTouch users that don't want to pay $ to Apple for the upgrade.
Needs 3.0
Boy with a large toy 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This would be great on 3.0. 3.1 is crapola
Need prior OS version support
harvster 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
requiring 3.1 is BS
Why 3.1?
3gs User CA 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
We were all excited that Drop Box would be available for iPhones, but that hope became a total disappointment. Why does a firm introduces its application with a 3.1 firmware requirement? What if I don't want to upgrade to 3.1?
Dropbox for iPhone: A Good Start
David Vasquez 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
After using this app for a brief time, I have found myself wanting to go back to the web interface - and for only one main reason. Photo thumbnails. There don't seem to be any! Unfortunately for me, someone who takes a large number of photos and stores them in his dropbox, this poses a problem which the web interface doesn't have. The ability to view image thumbnails seems like a no-brainer to me. I'm really disappointed that this functionality appears to be missing.
The missing piece of the puzzle
gecko68 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Dropbox for the iPhone is the missing piece of the puzzle. Now I can sync 3 computers and have access via my iPhone. It's fast (even on a Generation 1 iPhone) It's perfect to keep documents and other files you need on the go, handy.
Leave a little to be desired
Magif 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for this app for a long time. Dropbox is just amazing, it one of those rare apps that just works. But this versio leaves a little to be desired. I'm sure the developers will add them as it is updated. My suggestions are the following
Wonderful
bdawg923 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Thanks for 3.0 compatibility. This app lacks a few features of the desktop versions but it's a great first release anyway. Please add: push notifications for changed files.
Almost perfect.
Just Bob Pro 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Just added 3.0 support. I also just found out that when you favorite a file, it stores it locally. This is the best of both worlds cause you can use Dropbox to store more content available to your iPhone and only keep the ones you want on the actual phone.
Probably the best productivity tool
Mografi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Dropbox has changed the way I work, as I work from many different places. It always works amazingly smooth/fast, even when offline (unlike .mac) ...and somehow it's free!
One flaw
nasa geek 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
This is a great app except for one glaring flaw, I can't zoom into photos! It would be nice to have this functionality. THANK YOU SO MUCH: 1.1.1 has brought photo zooming to Dropbox!! This is truly a beautiful app
Editing capability
jeffpease 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Love Dropbox. I'll give it a perfect 5 stars when, if, they add the ability to edit files. I'd even pay for a premium version.
Good improvements but could do more
bronsonelliott 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's great that there is iPad support but it seems to be limited to editing files in supporting apps (Pages, etc). The missing feature is a way to save the files back to your Dropbox. If it's supported then I haven't figured out how to use it. Even if Dropbox allowed you to upload files via email that would work for me.
Amazing
BoZs13 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Amazing app and service. Dropbox makes my life easier every day. iPhone integration is just stellar.
Gotta love Dropbox
coliver87 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've always loved Dropbox. I have a shared folder with a friend that's living in Korea right now, and I love that can take a picture on my iPhone and sync it to her computer instantly. I can't wait for more features. The most important feature needed is the ability to rename, move, and delete files and folders. I would also like Recent Events notifications like there are on the web app, but I would like to be able to customize them so that I only have notifications for events made by other people in my shared folders. I don't really need notifications for what I do myself (the same is true for the web app). The only other feature I would like is the ability to view and possibly edit as many more file types as possible.
Never a dissapointment!!
Stu77 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This App was at the top of my list once the iPad came out! And it has all the features (+ more) that I was hoping for :D The guys over at Dropbox are the best! The ability to open a file in a 3rd party app is the best!!! Keep up the good work.
Great app from a great service.
tsuehpsyde 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Highly recommended if you're a dropbox user.
Great!
A Ryzzle 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1

Thanks!
Enzo65 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Thanks for iPad support. It's great and Dropbox overall is great. Please add the ability to save documents and photos to Dropbox from the iPad and the ability to hide the file list when in landscape orientation. Keep up the good work!
