Ngmoco Hit With Layoffs
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Feb 2012 12:38:55 UTC +00:00
We've been covering the existence of ngmoco since the very beginning in mid-2008, back before they dropped the extra colon from their logo even. A month later, we were on top of their initial round of funding, and with the launch of nglabs and other amazing future promises, quite a few people (myself included) thought ngmoco was going to become the unquestionable king of iOS game development. It's been a long four years since then, and while we once knew ngmoco for releasing absolutely classic must-have games like Rolando [99¢], Rolando 2 [99¢], and Star Defense [99¢], they switched gears to championing the free to play game market in a major way in late 2009. We were blown away when it was announced that Eliminate [Free] was going to be free, and We Rule [Free] was equally popular around here as ngmoco made a splash on the App Store with one Read More
Vocal members of our community have long since written off ngmoco as a lost freemium cause, leaving us hardcore gamers in the dust as they move on to greener (and more casual) free to play pastures. The Rolando series seemed poised to become the Super Mario of the iOS platform when the original Rolando [99¢] hit in in late 2008. In July of 2009, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid [99¢] was released, and is better than the original in every way imaginable. Unfortunately, even though Rolando 3 was announced, poor sales of Rolando 2 combined with the wildly successful freemium-powered Eliminate [Free] seemed to be all ngmoco needed to seemingly give up on the Rolando franchise. Check out the trailer to see what Rolando 2 is all about: With a 99¢ price drop and a Retina Display update, I recommend everyone download Rolando 2, and you might as well Read More
If you liked Eliminate [Free] but wish it had more, um, Star Wars, you're in luck assuming you're a "Canadian" or an actual Canadian. Similar to all recent ngmoco freemium releases, Star Wars: Imperial Academy is currently only available on the Canadian App Store, and should filter out to other markets as soon as they make sure everything is working properly. The game was just released mere moments ago, and judging by the feature list on the ngmoco web site, Star Wars: Imperial Academy just seems to be Eliminate with a heavy layer of Star Wars plastered on top. If you enjoyed fragging on the go in Eliminate, Imperial Academy seems worth checking out. We'll post more details on the game once we spend more time with it and it's finally available somewhere other than Canada.   #5   Today, 03:52 AM Senior Member iPhone 4S, iOS 5.x Join Date: Sep Read More
If you're like us and have way more apps in your iTunes library than you can manage without a dedicated personal assistant on the job (Ahh, first world problems truly are the worst.) then you might have missed some of these updates that have hit the App Store recently. If you've grown tired of any of these games since you first downloaded them, mash the "update all" button and give them a go again. Archetype, $2.99 - We were blown away by Archetype as evident by our review. The game features gameplay similar to Eliminate [Free] in that it's an online first person shooter that's playable over everything from EDGE to broadband via WiFi. Archetype ups the ante significantly by providing 5v5 team-based deathmatches that are a ridiculous amount of fun, and the fact that it runs at Retina Display resolutions on the iPhone 4 is the proverbial cherry on top Read More

A couple weeks ago we first caught wind of Archetype, an online first person shooter by iPhone developer MunkyFun which is comprised of veterans of LucasArts and the creators of both Shift [99¢] and Ivory Tiles [99¢] for the iPhone. Much like ngmoco's Eliminate [Free], Archetype is said to work over WiFi, 3G, and also EDGE connections. Players will rank up as they play, earning experience and winning medals along the way. The main differentiator between Archetype and other similar online shooters is that Archetype will be playable with up to ten players at once, in teams of five, with an assortment of six different weapons to choose from. We're anxious to see how the game works, and likely won't have to wait too long as per the Archetype web site the game is launching in "early July" for $2.99. NGMoco Announces We Farm, We City
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Jun 2010 15:40:19 UTC +00:00
NGMoco, the acclaimed iPhone developer behind the awesome We Rule and Eliminate Pro have announced a couple of upcoming games, which both seem to be different takes on the kingdom-building formula of We Rule.  Here are a couple of screenshots, it’ll be interesting to see how these games differ from We Rule, since the games look like they must be based on the same engine. We City – a Sim-city type game that utilizes the same building systems from We Rule We Farm – Again, it looks much like We Rule, but this time focuses entirely on the farming aspect Read More
Today is the day that all the wonderful things we heard about during the WWDC keynote regarding the future of the iPhone OS, now officially dubbed iOS 4, are available to everyone. This update is completely free, and only requires you to plug your device in to the computer you usually sync with then waiting for it to download and install in iTunes. There are over 100 new features in iOS 4 according to Apple, but so far my favorite two are folders and multitasking. With folders, you can now have up to 2160 apps on your device, and multitasking now allows for apps like Pandora Radio [Free] to continue playing in the background. For a listing of the other features, take a peek at the Apple iOS 4 Software Update page. One unfortunate thing to come out of this update is that first generation iPhone and iPod touch users are Read More
iPad: The First Real Family Computer
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 15:38:13 UTC +00:00
With the iPad's arrival this weekend, a holiday weekend for many Americans, this new iPad owner had the chance to see the device in action. In fact, "see" is the operative word here. Not, "play with myself," as is the case with most new tech gadgets I purchase. Instead, I simply watched from a distance as, over the course of the day, the iPad found its way into the hands of nearly every family member from ages 4 months to 87 years old. The incredible thing? No one walked away confused, frustrated or disappointed. It did precisely what they wanted it to do and with such ease that my tech support was not required - not even once - allowing me to sit back and relax...with an old-fashioned, paper-based magazine. After hearing the hoopla from the iPad launch, the crowd of "not-so-early" adopters has likely been left wondering if this is Read More
GDC 2010: Ngmoco justifies the freemium model
Calendar16 Wed, 10 Mar 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
We have a lot of questions for the company, and we'll be asking even more of them coming later this week. But first things first: we cornered Ngmoco producer Allen Ma here in their suite at GDC 2010 and asked him to try and tell us why Ngmoco is so insistent on "freemium," and how they feel about some of the adverse customer reactions to their model. Read on to hear why free-to-play, pay-to-play-more is the model that they're betting their business on. When we post about Ngmoco, the first comment on the post is often "Here's Ngmoco trying to steal our money again." What do you think when you see a reaction like that? It's very, very odd because it's strange to see those moments when our goal as a company is that we want to give you a full game experience for free. That's really what Eliminate is. You Read More

Posted 02/23/2010 at 7:41am | by J.R. Bookwalter Ladies and gentlemen, the consolidation of iPhone gaming companies has begun! Will startup ngmoco be the Godzilla of App Store gaming? TechCrunch is reporting that iPhone game startup ngmoco has raised a $25 million series C round and taken its first step toward dominance in the App Store by acquiring Freeverse, creator of such popular games as Moto Chaser, Flick Bowling and Flick Fishing. The financing round was led by Institutional Venture Partners, with existing shareholders Kleiner Perkins, Norwest Venture Partners and Maples Investments also participating. That brings ngmoco’s total capital raised to $40.6 million -- which yet again proves that iPhone gaming is indeed nothing to sneeze at. ngmoco CEO Neil Young (not to be confused with the performer of the same name) claims that he wants to “amass enough scale to accelerate away from the pack,” and the swallowing up of Read More

The 53 Best iPhone Games [IPhone Apps]
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jan 2010 00:40:00 UTC +00:00
Scouring the App Store for the best games is a full time job. Luckily, it's a job held by the guys over at Touch Arcade. Here are their picks for the best games—and only games—available on the iPhone. While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is Read More

Best iPhone Games November 2009
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Dec 2009 18:21:00 UTC +00:00
Our November game ratings are in place now, and here are the top of the heap. Our monthly "best of" round-up summarizes the top rated games that we looked at in the previous month. Each game reviewed receives a 1-5 star rating relative to the other games from that month. Generally, a 3 or higher is considered a "good" rating. Our final scores are not the product of any traditionally objective measures such as graphics or sound, but simply reflect the games we would most recommend to others. November was a great month for iPhone game releases, and our expanded list reflects that activity. November's "Best iPhone Games" are highlighted here: Jet Car Stunts - A remarkably fun jet car racer/platformer that had us coming back again and again due to its great controls, fresh visual style and mind boggling levels. The first person shooter from ngmoco is currently the 22nd most profitable app in the App Store, without costing users anything to download and play the game. Described as a “freemium” app, Eliminate Pro lets you earn points to buy new gear in the game as you play for a limited period of time. When that runs out, you can keep playing for free, or purchase blocks of time to earn more points in $1, $10 and $30 dollar increments. Now that in-app purchasing for free apps has been live for a few weeks in the iTunes App Store, and Apple is now ranking the top-grossing apps, whether they start out as free or paid, we have some initial data on what kinds of apps are pulling in the most money from in-app purchases. (In-app purchases allow apps to offer a free version and then make money by requiring consumers to pay for additional features or content). Today, Distimo put out a report (download it here) which breaks down the top 40 grossing in-app purchasing titles by category (see chart below). Games, social networking, and book apps are doing the best job upselling consumers from free apps to paid enhancements. Music, news, and finance apps, not so much. Weekly App Store Picks: November 7, 2009

It’s time to delve in to the App Store and take a look at a select few releases that could find a happy home on your iPhone. This week I’ve selected four games that I’ll be zoning out with this weekend. Of course there are scores of games out for the iPhone, but we’ve been lucky enough to have a few really excellent titles released in the past week or so. My top pick for this week is 8-bit rhythm-action game Ninja Honda Karate. Plus, I’ve also been looking at Eliminate Pro, Horror Racing and Minima. Amongst the endless generic game clones constantly arriving at the App Store, Ninja Honda Karate is a true breath of fresh air. It takes 8-bit video-games, Japanese culture, chip music and rhythm action gameplay, mashing it all together into a multicolor milieu of awesome. The game premise just barely makes sense. Quick Look: ngmoco’s Eliminate Pro for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Nov 2009 23:36:38 UTC +00:00
If you play action games on the iPhone, then you’ve probably heard the whispers about Eliminate. It’s the first multiplayer FPS to come out on the iPhone – and it’s free to boot! The game features 4-player deathmatching with a match-making system and an RPG-ish  weapon and armour upgrade component as well. I logged about half an hour with the game and despite the fact that the in-app purchases might be a little overpriced, I think that Eliminate Pro is one of the coolest iPhone titles I’ve seen in a while. Think Different DLC Killing enemies in online matches will yield credits that you can use to upgrade your weapons and armour, or buy new goodies to use and abuse. The catch is that you can only collect credits when you have energy. A full energy meter holds enough for three matches (3-4 mins in length) and takes four hours to Read More
Eliminate Breaks Into The Top 100 Grossing Apps List
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Nov 2009 18:41:05 UTC +00:00
Not too long ago, Freeverse decided to take a look at how in-app purchases affect the App Store’s Top Grossing Apps list.  After comparing the income and units sold of two of their top 100 apps, Flick Fishing and Top Gun, they were able to conclude that the Top Grossing Apps list does indeed take in-app purchases into account.  But if you were looking for more proof that the Top Grossing Apps list is serving its purpose, ngmoco has it for you.  Eliminate, the developer’s massively hyped first-person shooter for the iPhone and iPod touch, has entered the App Store’s Top Grossing Apps list even though it is available for free. Eliminate uses in-app purchases in a very unique way.  Instead of charging players for armor or weapon upgrades for their characters, they charge players for their time.  But players don’t have to pay to play, they can simply sit back Read More

ngmoco‘s highly anticipated FULL online multiplayer FPS was first released October 30 in Canada alone for some server testing. Yesterday we posted some tips on how to download the game for FREE by being a fake Canadian. Well you don’t have to go through loops and holes to be a fake Canadian because clicking this Eliminate Pro (FREE), you’ll be able to download the game from anywhere! Now I can talk freely about the game, I’d like to tell you that the controls, graphics and overall online implementation work perfectly for the game. There’s one thing that I’m put off though and to no surprise… in-app purchasing. How It Works? The game does a great job of presenting the controls to you. I highly recommend playing through the accessible practice room where you can get yourself familiarize with the game. Basically you get a directional left dpad while eyesight can be Read More

Canadian iPhone and iPod touch gamers got a bit of a head start on the rest of the world by being allowed to play ngmoco’s highly anticipated FPS shooter Eliminate over the weekend as sort of a large beta test group, but today is our day folks.  ngmoco has finally released Eliminate to the rest of the world. Eliminate is a first-person shooter for the iPhone and iPod touch that is focused on online multiplayer.  Eliminate can be played online via both Wi-Fi or 3G connections against anyone on the planet thanks to ngmoco’s solid matchmaking system.  The game features tons of different weapons, armor variations, maps, and Plus+ connectivity to keep you coming back for more. Besides the online multiplayer, the game’s biggest upside is its price.  Eliminate is available in the App Store free of charge, at least technically speaking.  ngmoco has chosen to employ in-app purchases to recoup Read More

Ngmoco's Online FPS 'Eliminate' Released Globally
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Nov 2009 18:51:28 UTC +00:00
Eliminate [App Store] has been somewhat of a sensation on our forums since its initial release in Canada. Our Canadian members (as well as quite a few "Canadians") have really enjoyed having early access to the game, and aside from the somewhat expected reactions towards the energy system and in-game microtransactions, it seems like everyone is having a lot of fun. We extensively previewed Eliminate last month, and very little has changed since then short of some tweaking of the energy system and increasing the recharge time. Still, as mentioned in the preview, you can play Eliminate for as long as you'd like to without paying a penny-- Your character advancement will just be slowed as you will only earn credits (the in-game currency used to level up and buy equipment) while you're energized. I highly recommend downloading Eliminate. It's free, you've got nothing to lose. Regardless of how you feel Read More
Ughhhhh!

Great game, but please ngmoco, purchasing energy cells? That's retarded! Why can't we just use credits to buy the cells? I wasted $5.00 just for the cells, and now they're almost out. Wow, this is a total scam. And cmon if you don't buy the cells, you have to wait for 256.32 (for me) minutes for your suit to recharge? Wow you guys, cmon. Please make it so we can use credits for energy cells, not actual iTunes money. Or even how bout just making it that there is now energy. To me, the whole energy thing is a big scam. Until you update I'm going to tell all my friends to not get this game, or write 1-star reviews. I'm also not changing my rating until you update.
The energy costs are frickin' ridiculous
hey mr dentist 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
What is up with the energy costs?! Seriously this is ridiculous! $1 for 20 power cells. That is only 5 sessions! The other upgrade packages don't help your budget much either. I mean if the packages were better I would consider buying them. If I could get 100 sessions (400 power cells) for $1 I'd pay. But 5 sessions?!!! Are you kidding me? Ngmoco, if you want my money, improve the frickin' energy packages. Right now they're stupid. And improve the damn suit recharge time. I'd like to see the energy be recharged fully for free 3 times a day. And none of this recharge-4-out-of-12 bars at a time! I want 12 out of 12 done 3 times a day! And make your packages divisible by 4 if your are going to take 4 energy bars a session. I mean it's great you get 30 power cell off the bat but I can't play 7.5 sessions. What are the remaining 2 power cells for? I mean when I see an option for 975 cells for $30 I think you guys are dumb as hell. Oh boy I get to pay $30 for 243.75 sessions!! That's only $0.13 a session (at the cheapest) for less than 5 minutes of play. In those 5 minutes, at least as a beginner, you might get 80 credits if you play well and win. At that rate you need to play 62.5 games to get enough credits for the Elite armor design. That's roughly 1/4 of the $30 you pay for 243.75 sessions which equates to $7.5 for a stupid suit design. The $7.5-suit design costs more than most full-fledged games in the App store! Make the prices cheaper!
Amazing Game, Horrible Planning.
Raiter13 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is great. The graphics are good, framerate is good, gameplay is good, upgrades are good. Although, I must mention the controls don't really work until you buy the first unlockable weapon. However, the one star review obviously has a reason. In the hopes of making more money (in light of the free apps with downloadable content) and making sure enough people would play the game, ngmoco made it free. To compensate for this obvious loss in cash, they decided to "let you make donations." If you want to play, you can any time. If you actually want to level up and get better equipment...well, that's another story. Ngmoco decided that they needed a source of income. Thus, they created the energy system. To earn money when playing, you must have energy. Unfortunately, you only get enough energy for ONE game (in which you earn money), every FOUR AND A HALF HOURS. Now, again, you can play without earning money, but there is no sense of accomplishment or reward. In one case, I had ten kills and only two deaths, yet since I was not energized I earned NOTHING. Ngmoco conveniently gives you the key to eternal happiness---MONEY. For only a dollar, you can play two and a half games (WTF?). Personally, I would rather have paid like ten bucks FLAT. Then played constantly or at least have a shorter charge time.
Lame

Awesome
NonstopRug 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
But 4 hours to recharge for enough energy for 1 game is insane.
? Are we made of money ?
BBK357 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great game, pay to play is bull$hit. I would rather pay $20 for this than the way it is set up now!
Great but...
julielttu 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can understand that MMO servers are hard and expensive to run but the way you get money is kind of stupid I mean come on? I don't have an iTunes card or any iTunes cash right now so I can't buy the energy so I have no powerups but some rich basturd comes along and he's got the "laser gun" that kills me in like four shots because he bought the battery thing that just makes me mad... But besides that one issue the game is perfect ngmoco PLEASE try to figure out a better way to make money that's not a serious disadvantage to us poor folks...
The best game from ngmoco yet
SgtBlue 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
ngmoco has released quite a few games on the iTunes App Store, but Eliminate is by far my favorite. Gameplay is fun and fast paced, and while the controls may take some adjusting to because of the lack of traditional FPS input devices for a touchscreen-only input device like the iPhone, optional features such as auto-fire make adjusting easier.
WOW!

Nearly perfect

and I still want my money back. This game is comically imbalanced. It's like a Greek tragedy of imbalanced games. The matchmaking system does not work. Noobs stand no chance. They will likely quit within minutes. This game has no chance at all of attracting a casual fanbase. The controls are far too clumsy, clunky, and cumbersome in the beginning. The learning curve is too steep. Casual gamers make up the majority of the idevice's ownership base. This game will fly completely over the head of many, many iPhone users. The pricing structure is ridiculous. It is utterly uncompetitive within the appstore marketplace. Much like iMech, this game is doomed. A decent effort from Gameloft on either NOVA or MC will serve as the final nail in Eliminate's coffin. Even without competition, it will likely die out anyway, for it has completely shot itself in the foot. The entire infrastructure of Eliminate reeks of amatuer hour. Infinity Ward would laugh themselves to death if they saw this. The udgrade system and the leveled weapons, each weapon more powerful then the last, obliterates any hope of maintaining a level playing field, where ideally skill would win out over equipment. Competitive balance is Irreparably damaged and the experience is crippled for all but those the most hardcore of gamers. I cannot believe that Ngmoco failed to grasp this most basic of concepts. Let alone the fact that he who pays more gains more credits and more upgrades.
WOW

one word...greatness
Horrible!!!
Vintager 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is horrible! Play for 5 min and after that you have to wait for 4 hours ???? What the hell?? This is totally wasting of money on buying credits! I will never buy them and never again buy anything from ng moco :) !!!
Sweet game
fastball1945 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Cool game, but PLEASE, PLEASE respect the iPhones silent mode. I have my phone on vibrate for a reason.
10/10
Loves2spoon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
My only complaint is the energy packs cost too much... Other than that the gameplay is excellent! Add me on plus+ Loves2spoon.
Exactly what I expected
im-unarmed 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The game is awefull, when you look around whith your right thumb the camera keeps going like it is floating making it impossible to aim at anything. I had every intention of not even trying this game but it was free and now I know why. I knew it was going to be bad and now it's confirmed.
Good game, bad model.
AMesenbrink 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a fun arena based FPS. The controles are OK, almost as good as Wolf3D and Doom. Player matching is really fast. First to 10 deathmatch is the only mode and the matches go quick. There is an offline bot match to train with, although the AI is a little slow. In game purchase of "energy" is required to continue leveling of your character. Granted you can play without energy, your character just has progression locked. I personally don't like the pay to play model, if this game was $5 - $6 that would be fine. I don't like seeing a sales pitch every time I play.
Why are you reading this... It's free
Videotape_ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is more full featured than most consle fps's... It will blow your mind
fantastic!
drewyoshida 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
finally a good fps hits the appstore!
Great game, dirty business tactic.
Otter X 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Absolutely fantastic game, BUT I would have preferred to pay like $6.99 and not have limits on my upgrades. I will not pay to have energy refilled for upgrades. This is a cheap move on the developer's part. This would have been a 5 star game, but they're forcing you to pay real money if you want to have any chance of keeping up with the competition. Everyone, rate this 1 star until they change this. This is a bad sign for the future of microtransactions.
Yawn
tennOtennO 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This just makes me yearn for DOOM multiplayer.
Pay to play
Applegeek24 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Stupid strategy ngmoco, you fail.
Incredible potential ruined by price structure
dmbfan2911 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is amazing, but please let us pick up bonus credits without energy. I understand that you want us to buy power cells but when I'm running around picking up credits and I don't get to keep them, it gets ridiculous. Will change to five stars when this is implemented.
Cells
Ohseeya30 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Those cells are really expensive! Please get ride of the price!!!!
Graphically impressive, but severely flawed.
Insert31990 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
First off, the way a first person shooter works just can't be converted to the iPhone properly, no matter how good the developer. For that reason alone this game is just not fun; the controls are sluggish and annoying to use. The charging and credit mechanic is good money for the developer, but a rip off for the user. There are two possitives this game has to offer: graphically it's impressive and the sounds (sans the grunting) are satisfying.
Not as fun as I thought it would be
bweb22 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well, what do you expect for a free game? The controls in this game are awful... the d-pad is shoddy, the gun never fires when I want it to, and the multiplayer battles are pretty much just four guys standing in four corners of the room shooting at each other. Not very fun, not to mention the singleplayer is just as bad. I've always been a fan of ngmoco's games, but this one just didn't live up to my expectations. Maybe some updates will make it better, but for now, Eliminate does not deserve a spot on my iPhone.
No inverted controls
Givn2fly 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Seems that this could be good but without inverted controls, it's unplayable for me.

They should have an option when you can choose if u want to fight as a team
Too good to be free.
Techfreakansh 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
First of all, the controls are not bad, they are just a bit different. Secondly, people complaining about the powercells, cannot look at the better side of it. It's for these powercells, that you are not getting highly adddicted to this awesome game. So stop complaining & get a life! Great work Ngmoco, add me. -techfreakansh
Amazing

Compared to all the free apps out there, this game beats them all.
Sell
Toximan2008 ( my YouTube account name =^} ) 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I wish fir an option to sell unwanted guns, armor, etc. Then it will be the BEST mobile game ever! Remember, sell for CREDITS, not power cells! Thank you. :D
Meh
Peta B. 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good game but needing to purchase powercells to progress kills gameplay. Powercells need to last longer because it only takes three matches to deplete your energy to zero.
Be happy with this!!!!!

I have modern combat sandstorm and it's 4.99$ and a piece of crap!!!!! So stop complaining about power cells and stuff! This is a FREE GAME so your not getting ripped off if you don't like it!
