Best apps for the Super Bowl
Calendar16 Fri, 03 Feb 2012 17:37:10 UTC +00:00
The Big Game is just a few days away and whether you’re a Giants fan or a Patriots fan, it likely will be a great time filled with adult beverages, tasty snacks, funny commercials (including one from Samsung) and great football. Research shows that many of you will be using a smartphone or tablet during the game, so let’s take a look at some great apps which will help you enjoy the Super Bowl even more. One of my favorite parts of the Super Bowl is that it gives you an excuse to eat all sorts of delicious food that’s probably not good for you but let’s step our games up folks and create bites that are better than your average feedbag. I really like the iCookbook app on the iPad because not only does it have thousands of recipes, it has voice controls in it so you don’t have to Read More

There are over 500,000 applications for the iPhone and iPad, 300,000+ on Android and thousands more on other platforms. The average user has 65 apps installed on their phone . Many of us have more. Entire businesses have been built to solve the problem of “app discovery” – that is, a way to supplement the limited app search mechanisms built into the vendors’ own application stores. This is primarily to benefit mobile app developers, who can’t get their apps found. The end results of these products are pitched to consumers as tools to “find new, cool apps,” “find apps your friends like,” or “find the best apps that do X.” While these efforts are appreciated by app developers and end users alike, they don’t solve what is increasingly becoming a real problem: finding the apps you already have installed on your phone. Free App Friday -- Don't Get Stressed About the Holidays
Calendar16 Fri, 09 Dec 2011 22:35:53 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/09/2011 at 2:35pm | by Florence Ion The holidays are always the most stressful time for me. If I could measure my holiday stress with buckets for my tears, there'd be enough water for a full-functioning well. I learned that the best way to curb my anxiety about getting everything done is to get organized and use tools that help increase efficiency. And fortunately, with the world we live in today where smartphones are our saviors, there are a heaping of apps in the iTunes App Store that can aid in getting it together. In this week's Free App Friday, I try to solve your holiday stress issues -- and, well, mine -- with a list of helpful apps. The app is an absolute necessity if you're spending some time in the kitchen this holiday season. In addition to giving you access to thousands of online recipes, it lets you Read More

The apps on Delta's iPads at LaGuardia airport in New York
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
A few weeks ago I got stuck for many hours at LaGuardia airport in New York (shocking, I realize, given how smooth air travel is these days). While at the Delta terminal I saw dozens of iPads installed next to small booths, designed for travelers to recharge and possibly play a game or order some food. We knew this was coming, but I was surprised to see them there nonetheless. While the iPads were physically locked down, iOS was pretty much just stock, with the apps Delta wants you to use on one screen, and all the stock iOS apps (Mail, Safari, etc.) on the other screen. I didn't see anyone swipe to the second screen while I was at the terminal. As you can see in the screenshot below, the apps Delta has added to the iPad are: Epicurious, Google Earth, SportsTap, Checkers Free HD, CNBC Real-Time for iPad, USA Read More

iPad Apps That Provide Recipes and Avoid Strife
Calendar16 Fri, 12 Nov 2010 23:22:29 UTC +00:00
Anyone who has prepared a Thanksgiving family dinner knows that the emotional minefield is laid long before the turkey goes in the oven. I speak of the annual quandary over whose recipe to use. Is it going to be Mom’s pumpkin pie or your mother-in-law’s? Either way, you risk offending half the family. That’s reason to give thanks for apps like Allrecipes and Epicurious, which offer terrific recipes and bring a Swiss-like neutrality to the Thanksgiving kitchen. Of course, neutrality isn’t the best reason to use these apps; there are the crowd-pleasing recipes they contain and and the fact that both apps having been reworked for the iPad, which, aside from the stove and refrigerator, may be the best device in the kitchen. Certainly you can print recipes off the Internet, or use these apps on your iPhone, but I’d say the iPad is the superior kitchen companion. It won’t curl Read More
New Yorker, Gourmet iPad apps debut
Calendar16 Mon, 27 Sep 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Two highly-anticipated iPad app releases have finally hit the App Store, and they're both magazines: The New Yorker and Gourmet Live. The New Yorker (free for the app, US$4.99 per issue) joins Gourmet Live as the latest magazine apps from publisher Condé Nast. The navigation is simple: tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the controls. You can quickly move between sections and articles with the scrubber or table of contents. For more leisurely reading, swipe between pages. One unique feature is how the magazine's famous cartoons are handled. Tap anyone to bring up a scrollable cartoon gallery. Plus, you can enter the regular caption contest right from within the app. It looks great, and we're eager to try it out. Meanwhile, ill-fated Gourmet Magazine has been reborn as the iPad app Gourmet Live (the current issue is free; there's no word of future pricing). As John Gruber points out, Read More
Review: Epicurious for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Jun 2010 12:17:40 UTC +00:00
For those of us iPhone owners that love to cook, the device has become a convenient way to find recipes and make grocery lists.  I used to use the “Everyday Food” app from Martha Stewart Living, however I recently discovered Epicurious, and since then it has turned into my one place to get recipes and make my weekly shopping list.  Although both the Martha Stewart app and Epicurious both offer many of the same features and functionality, Epicurious is free (and still better), whereas Martha’s Everyday Food is 99 cents. I love going through my Mom’s dusty old cookbooks (the Betty Crocker one is the best!), but if I ever do find a recipe I want to make, I have to write down all the ingredients on a paper grocery list.  Fortunately, Epicurious is now saving me that trouble (and some trees).  With one click you can add any recipe’s ingredients Read More
The iPad Is Da/Arrivé/Here/Qui – Here Is How To Start
Calendar16 Fri, 28 May 2010 12:30:14 UTC +00:00
There you go, Apple has officially launched the iPad in 9 new countries today. Well, the iPad actually didn’t wait on Apple to go around the world, and one in four iPads bought in the US has already flown the country by now. Also, an important amount of pre-orders has already been delivered early throughout the week, so the launch is not really that much of a massive event. Anyway, for our international readers who just got their iPad, here is some help for you. Short after unpacking and starting the device, you’re going to feel like you don’t know what to do with it. This feeling is not going to leave right away as it takes a couple days to get used to this new toy. What you’re going to need are apps, and that’s where the fun starts: I would tell you to start with some free apps, so you Read More
Found Footage: an iPad in a kitchen cabinet

While some TUAW bloggers use their iPads in the kitchen, TUAW reader Alan Daly has gone a step further and has built an his kitchen. In the video above and also in a Flickr photostream he's created, Alan shows the simple wooden mount that he used to embed the iPad into a kitchen cabinet. The iPad can be easily removed by unplugging it and then sliding it up and out of the mount. Alan demonstrates the iPad being used for many important kitchen tasks, such as using the Epicurious app, reading and watching news sites, and checking out TUAW. Alan commented in an email that "My wife thought I was nuts - until she saw the finished product ..." He bought a replacement cabinet door and cut that one in case things went bad, cut the hole with a jigsaw, and then used a Dremel tool to get the edges smooth Read More
Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime, Read More

It’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good. But back to those commercials. All three highlight popular and unique iPhone apps, some of which have already been featured in previous commercials. Let’s take a look at the apps featured in each commercial. The first ad is called Dine and features a smattering of apps covering a range of different topics, including travel, dining, working and shopping. Here’s a breakdown of the apps featured. TripCase (Free) — Flight tracking, info and travel itinerary management app. Quite a few not so great reviews on this one, but it is free. Were you watching the two-hour season premiere of House last night on Fox? Maybe you were watching one of the other prime-time shows, but if you had your eyes on the screen during some of the commercial breaks, you probably saw at least one of the three new iPhone ads that hit the airwaves last night. Each of the new ads highlights a total of six apps, up from the three that were formerly the focus of the older ads. The first ad I saw last night, "Dine," looks at Zagat to Go, QuickOffice, TripCase, New York Subway 09, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, and Gap Style Mixer. While I’ve featured some cool apps in this column, for one reason or another, not all of them have stayed on my phone. This week, all these apps will likely be staying on my phone and one will actually make it to the home screen. Just last week I mentioned I failed Algebra II in high school and this week I’m left wondering whether that would have happened if I had an iPhone and this app. That said, because I did fail Algebra II, I couldn’t put this app through its paces when it comes to nasty equations. But, here, just take a look at this: Wow, that looks like some crazy math. Well, honestly, it just looks like a bunch weird symbols to me. If you know what’s going on above, good for you for passing Algebra II. Just because I don’t need that serious math, however, doesn’t mean I Read More

Downloaded on the way to whole foods, spent five minutes sitting in the store cafe picking recipes and found plenty to acommodate my dairy allergy using the "vegan" sorter. 45 mins later I was out of the store with all the ingredients from my epicuruous shopping list. Made 2 of the dishes tonight--turned out great!! This is now a top-3 favorite app for me.
Been waiting a while for this!

Glad to have it finally. Walking around the grocery store with it open in Safari was a pain in the butt! Thanks Epicurious!
Almost awesome

This application is almost perfect, gorgeous layout, brilliant recipe search, I only wish I could link this app to my recipe box, folders and all.
Very good app.

I just downloaded this app for the shopping list feature, but I can't find the recipes that are in my recipe box from my Ipod. I'm not sure what the function of the app is if it does not give you what you want from the website. Can someone explain if I am doing something wrong? Thanks!
Finally a good recipe App!

I was using big oven for a while. I'm starting to like this better. I can email the recipe, not a just a link. Good work.
Good start

I've been waiting for an official Epicurious app for a long time and I'm glad it's finally here, but I wish it included more of the functions from the website. It would be so great if it let you sign in and view your saved recipe box from the website instead of having to find your favorites all over again. Also I find it annoying that you have to flick through results one at a time instead of seeing a list. Good things: The whole epi database is available in the app and the recipes themselves are formatted very well, so it's a solid start for a great app.
Excellent!

Nicer and more functional than other similar apps and the recipes are great.

I just dowloafed this app after making New Haven style clam pizza this evening and having used Epicurious on the web in the morning. How much more fun is doing the research on the iPhone by the side of the dough and perched on your kitchen counter or pizza peel. This app looks really promising. The shopping list is great. Wonder if it will ever dovetail with supermarket delivery services such as Peapod In Boston. Keep the good job.
Great!

I love epicurious.com, so I was thrilled to try this app. I'm very happy with it, love the search functions, and the bookmark feature is helpful. Search by ingredients is super helpful if you have an ingredient but are looking for ideas.
Superb!

I love their website. Now I can have it in my iPhone too. Tiny glitches. I still think it gets 4 stars.
Surprising

I'm not a fan of this app. I expected more from Epicurious. It's a little glitchy and weird. I just don't get it.
GREAT APP!!
chocolatierelite 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is just what I've been waiting for! Super clever and conceptually fits everything I could ever think of. In the next update you should be able to save your search so once you add to favorites you can go back to where you left off!
Thrilled!

Nice app!
Dzanda 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Since I practically live on Epicurious.com, I was thrilled to see this become available. All in all, it's a pretty polished and very usable app, especially for a v1.0.
Basically good, but shopping list needs a little tweaking
VirtualJohn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Generally speaking, I like this application but the shopping list function could use some improvement.
Good start, but...

Best recipe app!
Molar30 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have a lot a app's downloaded and this is the only one I felt I needed to submit a review. Best recipe app out there by far! Lots of ways to search for recipes and save to fav list or shopping list. Good work epi!
Nice application but wish it did a bit more
dingwah 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
In general its a nice easy to use application and I'd recommend it but I just wish it allowed me to connect to my account on epicurious.com. There I have already built up a list of favorite recipes, I have a profile and a network yet none of it is accessible in this app. Hopefully it'll come later
First Impressions - Nice!
MediaScot 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just got this and played with it for a few. What I like - access to the Conde Nast recipe library; shopping list is intuitive. What I don't like but will tolerate - ads, but the app's free and they have to finance it somehow. People pay for worse apps, so if you like to cook, check it out.
Shopping list is fantastic
Tjmeehan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great app! Its cool to scroll through options during the day and create a shopping list so easily. Not sure that I'd use such an expensive - and fragile - recipe holder in the kitchen, but the planning - shopping thing is great.
Awesome - but hate the ads.
Gordon in PDX 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love epicurious.com. Love having a mobile app with all those recipes. But the ads make me sad.
:(
Ho-hum 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Totally froze as soon as it installed...buttons don't seem to function well slow in reaction time
App crashes immediately upon opening
HC83 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was never actually able to use the app because when I tried to open it as soon as it got to the home page it immediately closed before I was able to do anything. Hoping for an updated app that doesn't crash.
Why can't I log in?
You Can Call Me Nanerpus 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The reason I downloaded this is to sync my account with my iPhone. I want to see all of the recipes that I've already spent hours poring over on the website. I need to see my saved recipes.
Good Start
Sumb1else 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The program is a great start, it's good looking and fairly intuitive. Seems a little glitchy with forward and back buttons not working, but i'm sure they'll work on that.
Fantastic!
Labecq 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
great app - easy and fun to use, and the recipes are top- notch. This beats the other recipe apps out there, imho
Looks good, a few quirks...
Cazz75 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The depth and breadth of this app is very impressive. I have a odd quirk were the email button does nothing. Like there is no code driving it yet.
Amazing
Matthew Encinas 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
