Chris Parsons’ most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011
Calendar16 Sat, 31 Dec 2011 03:50:50 UTC +00:00
By Chris Parsons, Friday, Dec 30, 2011 | Given that I spread my device usage across many different platforms such as iOS, Android and yes, even BlackBerry — I find I have a few standard apps that I like to use. There is of course an exception when it comes to iOS, because I’m not overly fond of the native Twitter client on any OS but for the most part — my most used apps all revolve around productivity for me and getting things done when I really need to. Read on for my selections As mentioned, I have a real distaste for Twitter for iPhone — especially after their most recent update. With that in mind, for Tweeting on the go I make use of Tweetbot. The layout is perfect for me, and it’s nice and fast in comparison to other Twitter clients out there. I find with most Twitter Read More

Skitch Image Editor Now Available on the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Dec 2011 23:30:48 UTC +00:00
I used Skitch on my Mac about a year ago when it was really popular, but the image editing tool fell off my radar after I started using more robust apps, like Pixelmator. A lot has happened to Skitch in the past year. The app has actually been bought by Evernote. Skitch has entered the iOS world today with an official iPad app. The tool lets you edit and annotate images on the iPad with your finger. Skitch is the amazingly fun and surprisingly powerful way to move your ideas and projects forward using fewer words. With Skitch, annotate and draw on just about anything that you see, whether it’s a new or existing photo, a webpage, screenshot, map, or a blank canvas. Then, share your work with friends, colleagues or save it all to Evernote. It couldn’t be simpler. The iPad app lets you import photos from your Camera Roll Read More

Holiday Gift Guide: iPad apps & accessories for business
Calendar16 Sat, 17 Dec 2011 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
From one-person shops to giant enterprises, if businesses agree on anything right now it's "iPad Yay." The Apple tablet hasn't even reached the terrible twos yet, but it's clearly making its presence felt across countless verticals and different industries. For at least a couple of mobile professional writers (who might have been termed "ink-stained wretches" in times gone by), the iPad's capability as a writing tool has led it to largely replace their laptops for day-to-day work. While consumers may be the drivers behind most iPad sales, chances are that the iPad-toting professional on your gift list is using his or her iPad for a combination of personal enjoyment and work tasks, so why not find a gift that supports and extends the biz savvy of everyone's favorite quasi-computer? Here's our brief list of gift ideas that you could conceivably write off on your taxes. Cloudy Days If your business iPad Read More
Favorite Four iPhone Utilities
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 18:30:41 UTC +00:00
By Lisa Caplan on November 30th, 2011 A look at our favorite four classic iPhone utilities for everyday use. It’s surprising sometimes, after accumulating so many apps, to see what we actually use on a regular basis. While setting up so many new iPhones recently, we really had to think – in a post iOS 5 world that rendered many staples obsolete – which of the dozens of utility apps we’ve stockpiled we still actually use. Here are our favorite four “classics” that we can’t get through most days without. Flashlight If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with a front-facing camera, no flashlight app we have seen is better or simpler than this one. The app uses the LED camera flash and a simple slider as a switch to provide bright reliable illumination in dark parking lots, while stumbling for door keys after a late night, or when trying Read More
Evernote – one of the very best and most powerful notes apps for iOS – has been updated again this week, to Version 4.1.6. The two big items in the change list are the ability to stop sharing notes and a new rich text editor for iPads running iOS 5. I’ve been trying out the new iPad editor over recent days and it’s looking quite nice. It’s still a much more crowded interface than some of the crisp, clean writing-focused text editor apps – but if you’re looking for lots of powerful formatting options Evernote is becoming quite a strong option. There’s no more messing around with ‘appending’ and losing formatting when you edit any note on the iPad, and you can even insert images into notes easily. The only other item on the change list for this update is assorted bug fixes. Evernote has been an outstanding iOS app since Read More

Homescreens – Oktober 2011 (iPhone + iPad)
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Oct 2011 09:09:11 UTC +00:00
Außerdem verstecken sich in Read More
Evernote doesn’t waste time at all. Evernote’s blog post ends with a promise that additional updates will be released in the near future, making our favorite note-taking service even better. Can’t wait for the next Android app update. By Bonnie Eisenman on September 12th, 2011 As a college student, my iPod goes with me everywhere. Here are some apps sure to help any college student with their busy life. From textbook apps to alarm clocks, iPhones and iPads can change the way students live and study. iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads abound on college campuses, and for good reason. iOS devices are great anyway, but for college students, there are myriad ways in which an iOS device can make life easier. When it comes to studying textbooks, taking notes in lecture, or even waking up to start the day—chances are there’s an app for that. There are far too many useful apps to count, but here I’d like to list just a few apps sure to help college students manage their busy lives. Evernote hits for the cycle with iOS and OS X updates
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Aug 2011 18:33:18 UTC +00:00
Evernote, the popular note-taking app, recently updated its clients on both Mac OS X  and iOS, and though there are highs and lows, overall each update brings appreciated improvements. The changes could even upgrade Evernote from bench-warmer to starting player in my daily workflow. I’m becoming convinced Full Screen mode is to OS X what 3-D is to movies: it seems like a great idea until you use it a lot. I raved about it when Lion launched, but my usage has since waned. With Pages, Safari, and Mail I’ll use full screen, but that’s more for easy switching or creating a distraction-free workspace. Evernote has introduced Full Screen mode and I doubt I’ll ever use it. For me, Evenote is an app I’m likely to have running behind my active window for reference and for quickly dropping links into. Still, it might be useful for taking notes during a lecture. Read More
7notes is a note-taking/handwriting recognition app for the iPad. It costs US$8.99; there is also a $4.99 iPhone version, along with feature-limited free versions. I spent several hours using the iPad paid version (7notes Premium) and found it did an excellent job of recognizing both my cursive words and individual letters, all done with my finger on the iPad screen. Handwriting recognition is not a trivial task, and 7notes has a very smart recognition engine. The app also has a predictive engine which worked quite well, figuring out my scrawl and giving me some words that matched the context of what I was writing. When there is more than one guess, you just tap the word you want. As you write, you can also add freehand graphics, with some choice of color and thickness of the stroke. I was able to easily add arrows and other simple symbols or diagrams. You Read More
Evernote Receives a Huge iOS Update
Calendar16 Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:05:21 UTC +00:00
A new update to Evernote has been released and it turns out that it’s far more than just an update to the iPad UI. I have included a screenshot of the release notes that details all of the changes, but I’ll discuss just a few of my favorites now. One of the biggest changes in this newest version of Evernote is the addition of rich text editing capabilities. The desktop versions of Evernote have long been able to bold, underline, and strikethrough text. The iPad and iPhone versions of the app could see these rich text styles, but could not actually edit them, only append plain text to the end of the note. Until now. Loading either version of the mobile Evernote app now allows users to edit and create their own rich text notes through a great new set of toolbars at the top of the screen. There are a Read More

Major Evernote iOS update adds rich text, iPad redesign
Calendar16 Mon, 22 Aug 2011 19:00:15 UTC +00:00
Evernote has just pushed out a major update for its iOS app and this includes a redesigned iPad version and a host of new features. The iPad redesign of the Evernote app is probably one of the most notable features of this update, as it gives you an easy-to-manage view of all your notes with a bit from each note. As you would expect, this does make better usage of the larger screen and it features pinch to zoom features, as well as the ability to quickly share notes. Here’s what it looks like: Another cool new feature of the Evernote iOS app is the ability to add rich text support like bold and italics to your notes. I know that seems like a relatively minor thing but Evernote says this was actually a “doozy to implement,” so go ahead and go nuts with it. You can also look forward to Read More
The folks at Evernote rolled out a pretty significant update to its iOS app today that includes rich text support, shared notebooks, a redesigned iPad interface and more. Andrew Sinkov said on Evernote's blog that implementing rich text was "a doozy." Users can stylize text, add highlights and URLs, create headers and make lists. This also involved overhauling a bit of the iPhone app to work in the features. In addition to creating new rich-text messages, existing ones can be edited. However, you still can't create checkboxes without using the desktop version of Evernote. The feature I've looked forward to most is accessing any notebook that's shared with you from any iOS device. When the shared notebooks are accessed, they also are stored locally. Users can now search within a particular note as well. Other additions include: The Evernote update is available now via the App Store. Read More

Using smartphone for travel
Calendar16 Tue, 14 Jun 2011 09:52:05 UTC +00:00
A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7. Pulse News app now saves and syncs
Calendar16 Fri, 03 Jun 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
Pulse News app for the iPhone and iPad received a nice update today allowing selected stories to be saved and automatically synced to other Pulse News apps you have or retrieved via the web. Sign-up for the service is free and can be done from within the Pulse News app. All that's required is a user-name and a password. When you see a story you want to save, click on the star symbol. If, for example, you did that on your iPhone, you can pick up your iPad and the saved story will be there too, assuming you have a web connection. The story is also accessible from the Pulse.me website. Saved stories can also be sent to Instapaper, Evernote or Read It Later. If you import newsfeeds from Google Reader, marked stories will also mark them in Google Reader. After some difficulty with iTunes this morning, I was able to Read More
Evernote for Honeycomb to rock rich text editor
Calendar16 Wed, 18 May 2011 08:48:03 UTC +00:00
During the recent Google I/O conference, Evernote demoed its upcoming app for Honeycomb tablets. We don’t have all the details, but from what we’ve heard – it’s going to be an awesome app. As you can see from the image above, Evernote for Android Honeycomb tablets comes with a UI which is very similar to the updated web version of the service, taking advantage of the high resolution displays to show more data on a single screen. As a result, browsing and searching for notes is easier and faster. But wait, there’s more. Probably the single most important feature of the upcoming application is the rich text editor. That’s right, you will be able to format text before syncing it with the Evernote cloud. And it’s not just the pure basics like bold, italic and underline – lists are also supported and so are images. Love it. Unfortunately, the release date Read More
Top 5 task management apps for iPhone

Bringing Your New iPad 2 to Work
Calendar16 Fri, 18 Mar 2011 22:20:33 UTC +00:00
As most companies have looked to cut costs any way they could, the result has been a workforce equipped with underpowered devices, plastic enclosures and an outdated mobile paradigm that require most users to carry around a mouse and power cord to be of any real use.  Most business users have simply had enough, and for a very affordable price, are starting to fund their own IT revolution by bringing their new iPads to the workplace. Here’s how you can do the same. Getting a new iPad 2 is only half the battle.  Once you’re at work, before you can reclaim the time you once lost to reboots or hunting for the one free power outlet in the conference room, you realize you need to get connected to the corporate network.  For the most part, establishing a new connection to your place of work’s wireless network is quite easy.  If you’re Read More
Extra review: Evernote 4.0 for iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Mar 2011 15:23:46 UTC +00:00
It’s been quite a while since I last used Evernote (free) as my main note-taking app on the iPhone, but something about this latest re-design of the app really caught my eye. I know that Patrick covered the major changes earlier this week, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and suppose that you won’t mind reading another take on this superb note-taking service. Patrick’s was really an overview and mini-review of the new features, so I’ve written this review from the perspective of a big note-taking fanatic’s return to the Great Green Elephant. OF COPYING AND PASTING (CORRECTLY) One of the main reasons I left Evernote a while back is because of how badly it treated plain text. Evernote CEO Phil Libin has always preached, especially on the awesome Evernote podcast, that the vision behind the service is to give you full control over your data. In other words, what Read More

Favorite 4 – Note Taking Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Mar 2011 18:30:46 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on March 2nd, 2011 Favorite 4 note taking apps. Simpler than Simplenote. – Simplenote, for one reason or another, is always a crowd favorite for simple note taking. Ridding itself of all the bells and whistles, Simplenote does a great job of creating searchable lists very quickly, with an added bonus of having instant syncing between your notes on your device and the internet. Also exciting is that Simplenote syncs with a few different desktop apps, which allows users to pick and choose the desktop interface they like best. Some people will be turned off by the lack of an official desktop app, but the WinAmp generation of PC’s past will appreciate the option to choose something different. There are limitations to Simplenote that users should be aware of, though. Unlike the rest of the feature-packed note apps, Simplenote doesn’t allow drawing or images of any kind. No Read More
Evernote hüpft am iPhone auf Version 4
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Mar 2011 11:02:08 UTC +00:00
Das Read More
Evernote for iPhone Gets a Monster Update, to Version 4.0

With that in mind, we went back to the drawing board and reconsidered every single aspect of Evernote for iPhone. We think you’re going to love the changes. With that, we give you Read More
Evernote for iPhone Gets a Facelift
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Mar 2011 15:45:48 UTC +00:00
by The team at Evernote released Tuesday a brand new version of Evernote for iPhone and iPod touch. Evernote 4 [iTunes link] is available in the App Store and it sports a complete redesign. The new design retains all the functionality of the old app while presenting a more streamlined and modern view. Looking at the app, we are struck by how many modern app design trends have made their way into Evernote 4. The app looks great and we love the new Snippet View on the Notes page and the redesigned New Note panel. The New Note panel mimics Twitter for iPhone, a design decision that works quite well for the app. The Evernote team has also added in niceties like the ability to select multiple camera roll images at once or to quickly remove attachments. Check out this video that shows off the new app: On its blog, Evernote Read More
Evernote for iPhone, which is almost two and a half years old, has been completely overhauled. The new version, Evernote 4 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, is free, and available from the App Store. In the blog post launching the new version, Evernote says that the new version is based on its findings from the last two and a half years. "[...] Users want faster access, easier note creation, better browsing and more ways to find what they're looking for" -- and, with Evernote 4, that's exactly what you get. The New Note screen now looks completely different, and now features much easier access to every kind of notetaking functionality (audio recording, camera snapshot, etc.) Browsing by notebooks and tags has been made significantly easier, too. As always, it's better to just download the new version and try it out. Or, if you prefer, watch the video after the break, Read More

Evernote for iPhone launched with the Apple App Store, and the app has ungone a number of evolutionary steps in the years since. Today Evernote is unveiling version 4 of their iPhone app and the changes, while maybe not revolutionary, are certainly substantial. The home screen, for example, is completely revamped to show snippets of notes making the app useful as soon as you launch it. The changes to the home screen look great. Most of the time when I launched Evernote I wanted to look at a note I had previously made, so being able to access this information immediately is a huge time saver. Creating a new note in Evernote version 4 has been upgraded, too. You can type text as normal, but from the same screen you can now embed images from your photo roll, take new pictures, and record audio. Multiple media types can be added to Read More
Evernote Totally Redesigns Its iPhone App

Evernote is releasing a completely redesigned app for iPhone and iPod Touch today (iTunes link). Noting that its iPhone app was first released the same day as Apple launched the iTunes App Store, Evernote says it's learned a lot about what it takes to make a great app. And equipped with two years worth of feedback, the notetaking and storage platform says it's gone "back to the drawing board and reconsidered every single aspect of Evernote for iPhone. The changes are pretty impressive, and if you're reliant on Evernote for your mobile device you'll find the app faster and the interface more intuitive - all making the app a lot easier for not just note-taking but for note retrieval. Evernote has changed the home screen, so the changes are apparent right when you open the app. Browsing and note creation are unified there, and you can see a Snippet View of Read More

Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)

App Store Focuses on Hall of Fame Apps

As it turns out, you don’t have to wonder any longer -- Apple has created a section dedicated to what they consider the best 50 apps. Opinions may vary from user to user as to what constitutes the best iOS apps, but Apple has some ideas of their own and they’ve created a new page of the best 50 in their opinion which they call the App Store Essentials Hall of Fame. It’s a great place for first-time users to immerse themselves in their new iOS device purchase with what many of us would consider the best apps ever made. “More than two years since launch, we’re many apps wiser,” Apple’s gold-hued banner (seen above) reads. “Presenting our ongoing collection of the very best of the best.” Read More
By – Debate over the top gadget of 2010 is inevitable. PCWorld’s list shows the 100 top gadgets according to the editors of PC World. Android showed some amazing growth this year and powers a lot of devices, but we are actually surprised that it came in just above the iPad. That said, we are kind of surprised that Apple TV made the list at all. It’s cool, but we didn’t know it was top gadget material. The iPhone 4 placed in at number 13, despite the issues that came with the release. Also notable is Adobe’s grossly overpriced creative suite and Gmail. One of our favorites? Evernote, which is at number 71 (you can download it here), but is one of the most awesome applications we have used in a long time. Here’s a glimpse: The rest of the list is available here. Evernote launches in Japan, updated for iOS 4.0
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Jun 2010 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
Mac & iPhone-friendly memory service Evernote has announced this morning that it's launching in Japan -- a new subsidiary called Evernote Japan will be headquartered in Tokyo. While a Japanese version of Evernote launched a while ago, it's become the company's second largest market, taking up fifteen percent of the daily traffic on the service. What this means for non-Japanese users is that the main app will now also support Japanese character recognition -- while handwritten characters still probably won't work with the service, we're told, printed Japanese characters can be read by the app from photographs and scans. Additionally, the iOS 4.0 version of Evernote already came out on the App Store, featuring multitasking support, as well as improved synchronization. Both the iPad and iPhone versions of Evernote are free, of course, and you can sign up for the service on their website. Sounds like things are growing in leaps Read More
More iOS4 Compatible Apps Hit the App Store

The Best iOS 4-Ready Apps So Far
Calendar16 Sat, 19 Jun 2010 23:14:14 UTC +00:00
We all know that the iPhone 4 launches this coming Thursday. But on Monday, current iPhone users get an early treat in the form of iOS 4, the new iPhone operating system (formerly known as iPhone OS 4). It comes with several enhancements, but the ones people seem most excited about involve multitasking (or background tasks). A little over a week ago, Apple began urging developers to submit their iOS 4-ready app, and a number of them have. And actually, some have already been approved, or will be shortly. The component that all of these apps share is the ability to do fast app switching. What you may traditionally think of as multitasking isn’t the same on iOS 4. Multiple apps aren’t running all of their functions in the background at once — obviously, this would take up resources and eat up battery life. Instead, Apple allows third-party apps to do Read More
Popular cloud-based notetaking app Evernote was just updated to work with iOS4. Specifically, this update adds support for the new fast app switching feature. Evernote is a very popular free notetaking and cataloging service. With Evernote you can store and access content through this iOS4 app,  as well as an OSX app, Windows app, browser plug-in, and through their web site from any browser. You can do text notes, voice notes and photo notes. All notes can be tagged and put in folders as well as their contents fully indexed to make them easily searchable. Pictures added to Evernote are automatically run through an optical character recognition program and any recognizable text is also added to the index. This means that if you take pictures of your store receipts, then later you can search Evernote and easily find the receipt where you bought Gigli on Bluray. Now, with the latest update Read More

TinyGrab for iPhone helps you share pics over the cloud
Calendar16 Fri, 28 May 2010 17:01:05 UTC +00:00
TinyGrab started off as a simple image sharing cloud service for Windows and Mac OSX, but now it, too, has an iPhone app. It’s only $1.99 and requires no subscription to use, but I can’t, for the life of me, think of any reason to use it. TinyGrab specializes in taking your pictures, uploading them to the cloud, and then providing you with a tiny URL for sharing purposes. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Twitter apps, the Dropbox iPhone app, Pastebot, and Evernote can already accomplish something similar. I use Pastebot for throwing pictures from my iPhone to my Mac, Dropbox or Twitter for quickly sharing pictures through Tiny URLs, and Evernote for saving important pictures of receipts. I feel a little bad about passing the app up, since I was able to grab a free Pro account through one of the MacHeists, but it’s offering something I simply don’t Read More

Quick Review: Evernote for iPad

By Chad Garrett, Friday, Apr 9, 2010 | I am a huge fan of Evernote [Free- iTunes Link]. I knew they were working on an iPad version of their software, but I had no idea what to expect. Needless to say I am pleased with their design decisions and love the completely new layout for iPad. Evernote for iPad gives you several new and fun ways to view and organize your notes. First, you can view them by thumbnail or details. I think thumbnails work best with pictures. I tend to have more text notes, so details works best for me.

Universal iPhone/iPad Apps Surface in App Store

While the various news outlets of the web may have gotten readers a bit too ecstatic when hyping out the iPhone 5, truth is, there was no iPhone 5 come Apple’s annual press conference. One source says that next year’s iPhone, unofficially and presumably dubbed iPhone 5, will be a It seems that Apple decided to go ahead and give the go to iOS 5.0.1 earlier than we had initially thought. Releasing today, the update brings along multiple new minor features, the most significant, however, being the highly anticipated iPhone 4S battery patch. You’ll first dive into Junk Jack without a clue of what you’re supposed to be doing – running around, tapping on random blocks. Then when night falls, the monsters devour you, and by this time you’re frustrated. What's a "Universal" iPad App and How Do You Use It?
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 16:52:14 UTC +00:00
Do you already own an iPhone or iPod Touch and are planning on buying an iPad, too? Then you need to know about the new "universal" applications now available in the iTunes App Store. These combo apps for Apple's line of mobile devices are basically "buy one, get one free" deals except for one small difference - both apps are bundled into one download. When you run the universal application on a small-screened device, you'll see the iPhone version and when you run the app on your iPad, you'll see the larger, iPad-only version. And these won't just be blown up, oversized iPhone apps either - they'll be custom designed apps made specifically for the iPad. When searching through the application store, you can identify the universal apps by the small plus sign that appears to the left of the application's price in the search results. Or, if viewing the description Read More
Desert Island Apps – Number 10, with Brian Bothwell
Calendar16 Sat, 27 Mar 2010 14:52:16 UTC +00:00
Today we ‘re continuing our series called Desert Island Apps.  It ‘s based on a very long-running and brilliant BBC Radio show called ‘Desert Island Discs ‘.  The premise of Desert Island Discs is simple and wonderful “ a guest is invited to choose the eight musical pieces (originally records) they would take with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In our case of course we ‘re not interested in our guests ‘ choice of music.  What we want to know is which six iPhone apps they would take with them if stranded on an island. In the past we’ve left the field wide open on this, and even let guests assume they’ve got WiFi and full connectivity on their island.  This time round the stakes are raised – as our guest has decided he wants to inaugurate the ‘Hardcore‘ version of Desert Island Apps, as you’ll Read More
Scanner Pro updated, still powerful, still complex
Calendar16 Tue, 23 Mar 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Scanner Pro is a US$6.99 iPhone app by Readdle which will let you easily take a picture with your iPhone. We've looked at Scanner Pro before and now a new 2.0 version has been released with page edge detection, image stabilization, and German, Spanish, French, and Italian localizations. Unfortunately, it doesn't do much to address the UI issues that Erica pointed out in her original review. The UI is complicated, and it took me several attempts to even figure out how to take a picture. The screen shot at the right shows the "workflow" for creating a new document (tap the icons at the bottom, working left-to-right, to step through the process). After I took a picture of a page of text, another menu offered to let me "crop" the scan down to particular sizes. it took a bit of effort to get the margins lined up, and eventually I just Read More

En unos cuantos clic Read More
version 1.0 There are more and more good-looking iPhone apps coming out, and that’s certainly not a complaint. I think it’s actually one of the major advantages of the platform (really sexy apps!), but as more and more of these gorgeous designs hit the App Store, it becomes even more important to have a solid, functional UI underneath all the gloss. Synotes from Syncode is a shiny new note app that feels very much like a version 1.0. It features a good-looking interface and free, automatic-syncing with the online Synotes web app. Unfortunately, Synotes still has a bit of catching up to do when it comes to the basics, and it pales in comparison to other similar offerings such as Evernote and Simplenote. List View There are basically two screens you’ll be using in Synotes, the first of which is the list view. This shows all of your notes in the Read More
wow, I melded the Pastebot and Evernote logos - how clever. Post-CES coverage is coming out now, and Gear Diary and Cult of Mac have some good stories to share. Dan Cohen of Gear Diary is a full-on Evernote evangelist, and he got a chance to speak with Phil Libon, CEO of Evernote last week. His interview talks about how the company has come this far (over two million users!) and where they’re going next. You can check that out here. Craig Grannell of Cult of Mac also conducted an interview (although this one probably isn’t CES-related) with Paul Haddad and Mark Jardine, the two halves of iPhone app development team, Tapbots. They’re the makers of some of my favourite iPhone apps: Convertbot and Pastebot. The interview discusses how they came to be, the inspiration behind the “bot” theme of each app, and what they’ve got planned for 2010. Definitely worth Read More

With well over 100,000 apps in the iPhone App Store now, it ‘s pretty rare to find that ‘there ‘s not an app for that ‘ when you think of things you need to do on the iPhone, or even in life in general.  It is common though to find many apps that offer to do the same thing, and to struggle to find the one or ones that work best for you and your own habits and preferences. Santa Brings Huge Evernote For iPhone Update
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 15:30:20 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/24/2009 at 7:30am | by J.R. Bookwalter Apple’s App Store elves have been busy pushing out last-minute updates for Christmas, and one of the coolest is a big Evernote for iPhone refresh. Evernote, you may recall, is the excellent “second brain” service that offers you a free (with paid options available) depository for ideas, web snippets and basically, anything you don’t want to deal with right now but might want to deal with later. In addition to client software for the Mac or Windows as well as a web-based version you can access from anywhere, Evernote was one of the original iPhone apps to hit the App Store when it launched last year. So what can iPhone users uncover with the new Evernote 3.2 update? How about offline notebooks for Premium users? Speed improvements? Better note editing? Longer audio recording? Or even the ability to upgrade to the Premium version Read More
by Last night, Christmas came early for Evernote iPhone users. The popular omni-purpose note service released version 3.2 of their iPhone app [iTunes link], putting some of their new money to work by making major improvements under the hood and adding in a few nifty features. Evernote for iPhone is speedier than ever and now supports offline notebooks and local note caching, includes enhanced note editing, boasts offline search, supports lengthier audio notes, and includes premium purchase options from within the app. Perhaps the most notable change is the addition of offline notebooks. It’s a premium feature designed for those Evernote users who can’t live without their notes when they’re not online. From the Sync tab, scroll down to select Settings -> Offline Notebooks. You’ll see a list of your notebooks, allowing you to select all or individual notebooks, which will be fully downloaded to your phone for access — regardless Read More
In my almost standard morning ritual of hitting that “Check for Updates” link in the applications section of iTunes, I was greeted with a nice surprise this time. The Evernote app has been updated. This update has brought the version up to 3.2.0 and with that comes quite a few new features. And as a Premium Evernote subscriber, this update was specially nice for me. The new addition that I was most excited about was the addition of offline notebooks. Which means that premium subscribers can now “download and store any/all of your notebooks, making them available offline.” But that is not to say the update is not worthy of those who are not premium subscribers because that is just the first of many improvements that were made. Additionally, the app also was given; And finally, for anyone that may be on the fence about becoming a Premium subscriber — you Read More
Evernote for iPhone [Free, iTunes Link] has received a major update to version 3.2.0, which went live late this evening in the App Store and should be arriving in App Store updates soon. According to our contacts at Evernote, the new app is much faster, with speed improvements in launching, searching, syncing, creating new notes, and browsing. As TUAW heard during a November interview with Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, the updated app provides local caching and searching. Any note that is created or viewed on the iPhone is cached locally for viewing and searching, even when offline. Premium users can choose to have any or all of the notebooks they've created fully downloaded to their devices, once again enabling offline usability. Rich text notes can be converted to plain text for editing, and a copy of the original note is moved into the trash for future recovery. Other new features Read More

Seven iPhone Tools for the Screen Writer

Writing a script is rarely a case of sitting down and knocking out 120 pages in one go, it takes time, patience and innumerable re-writes before it’s ready, therefore always having it with you for editing or adding ideas makes a lot of sense.  Of course, carrying a pen and pencil can be a pain, let alone an entire manuscript – but we always have our phone! Whether you’re a budding screenwriter or an old hand, these iPhone apps could prove invaluable. Thanks to a recent update, the first iPhone script writing app that was, could now be considered the best way to write and edit a script on the move.  Key to this is the simple interface and easy navigation to different scenes, plus the addition of Final Draft compatibility.  If the option to import Celtx scripts is added in a future update – as not all script writers are Read More

Phil Libin on the past, present, and future of Evernote

It must be nice to be Evernote CEO Phil Libin right now. His company's product / service, Evernote, is about to break 2 million customers, they're past the days of initial development and beta testing, and the future is looking bright. I had a chance to chat with Mr. Libin last Friday about Evernote, the service that acts as a cloud-based repository for all of the information in your life. Last year during the closed beta test of the service, TUAW's Brett Terpstra interviewed Libin, who called Evernote "universal human memory extension." Whatever information you want to put into the Evernote cloud -- text, photos, voice memos -- is available for searching and viewing from your Mac, PC, or iPhone. Handwritten or printed text runs through a recognition routine that makes it searchable text, something that I've found incredibly useful when storing my business cards in Evernote. Useful educational iPhone apps for students
Calendar16 Tue, 06 Oct 2009 22:46:00 UTC +00:00
If the student in your life has an iPhone, they're probably text messaging, surfing the Web, checking e-mail, and using apps. And although the phone can be a distraction in the classroom, it can also be a viable companion for students. There are several great iPhone applications designed specifically for students. These apps all aim to make the student in your life just a little more productive in their educational endeavors. Since many college students use BlackBoard to access class information, BlackBoard Learn seems like an ideal choice for those students. BlackBoard Learn, a free app, allows students to access all the information they normally would find on their unique online account. They need only to download the app, input their username, and they will be able to access all their class information. Everything from teacher announcements to new assignments are available. They can even check their grades. It's a free Read More

Do you remember Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan when the Reliant ambushes the Enterprise? There is a moment from that nail-biting sequence that seems rather befitting for this article. Just to take you back, the Reliant is slowly, silently, closing the distance between itself and the Enterprise. Lieutenant Saavik turns to Admiral Kirk and begins quoting Starfleet Regulations concerning communication protocol between starships, but she is reprimanded by Captain Spock with “The Admiral is well aware of the regulations.” Moments later, the Enterprise gets pounded by the Reliant…which they discover has been hijacked by Khan. (Great scene!) My point is that no matter how much you think you know a subject or topic of discussion, you’d better do your research. It was a hard lesson learned from my first novel. 3 Hidden Gems You Have To Pay For
Calendar16 Thu, 27 Aug 2009 16:51:32 UTC +00:00
Many of the apps featured in this column week after week are free. This is done for a couple reasons. For one, most people are not rich and cannot test out every paid app thrown their way. For another, apps that may be useful to me may not be as useful to you. While I don’t want to waste my money, it’s more important I don’t convince you to waste yours on something that doesn’t quite fit your needs. This week, however, it’s time to pay up. I’m going to do my best to convince you to pay for three apps – Mover+, Simplenote and Newsstand. Based on John Gruber’s recommendation, I gave Simplenote a buy. In short, he’s right. Previously, I recommended Evernote. It’s a great app especially if you’re on an iPhone 3GS. It has some great features that are impossible to match. Chief among the features unique to Read More
Back to School: Top 10 iPhone Apps for Students

Academic Appeal: Five Apps for the iPhone-toting Student
Calendar16 Thu, 13 Aug 2009 21:00:02 UTC +00:00
With the academic year about to begin, and having already tackled the important issues of iWork vs. Office, it’s time to turn our attentions to the iPhone. With over 65,000 apps on the App Store, even subtracting all the iFart and iTip applications there are five I feel are indispensable for any college student’s life. These apps range from the practical to the whimsy — all school and no play makes for a grumpy Crumpy. Evernote has quickly become the dumping ground for any information I come across on the Internet. I don’t even bother bookmarking anything anymore; I just clip it into Evernote. It’s very useful when I’m researching a paper — I’ll just tag an entry with the name of the paper, or create a notebook just for that class. Since Evernote keeps the URL for all clipped pieces, it’s very convenient when I go back to cite the Read More

Works OK, but has two main pitfalls: Can't edit notes once submitted, and, more importantly, the notes are not stored locally, limiting it's use on the Touch.
Like It, Don't Love It
FalconBrad 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
OK, here's the deal. I love Evernote, and use it on both my Mac and PC, and I thought the Evernote webapp was alright. I was hoping for the ability to edit notes, for example. But I have little doubt that future versions will address these issues.
Love this!
oldmanindie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I am new to Evernote so I was very pleased with this app. I signed up for a free account, downloaded the free desktop app and downloaded the iphone app. I am completely addicted. Evernote is like to-dos and notes on steroids. Being able to access my account and view my notes from my phone, computer and the web is incredible - very much like a free missing feature in a mobileme account. I've seen people complain about not being able to edit notes via the phone but so far that hasn't been an issue for me. I enjoy the ability to take notes from the phone and I edit them if need be the next time I'm at my computer. I highly suggest using evernote and downloading this app!
Cool Application on its own and interacts with the desktop version
songnotsung 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
One cool thing about the iTunes Application store, is that in searching the offerings here, I am becoming aware of some great programs that are also available for the MAC desktop.
Very pleased
5 out of 5!! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I'm giving this 5 out of 5 because they have just announced a feature that will make this app perfect...editing! Forget all of those task managers and text notepads, this does it all and syncs it all online for you to be accessed anywhere. A brilliant idea.
Perfect
Jason from VA 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is should be the model for what iPhone apps should look and function like. It's beautiful, intuitive and all-around a perfect implementation of Evernote for the iPhone.
Just for capture
TomKu 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This might be a great tool for capturing information. The tiny font make is completely unuseable for reading your notes, though. The web app is much better in this respect. I'd rather not bother and wait for the next release.
Good start, waiting for update
Jragon 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am in love with this company, so this was one of the first apps I got. It has cool features but the polish isn't yet what I expect from evernote. I'm sure it'll be there very soon and I'll be first in line to grab it.
Very Nice!
esoffron 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I used to use the multi-step process of taking pictures and then emailing them to my Evernote account, but this app has built-in compatibility with the iPhone's camera. The search for existing notes is very nice as well.
Too powerful for its own good
VicDiesel 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
This app wants to do too much, and in the process falls flat on its face. It takes ages to start up. Twice it lost an hour's worth of note taking because I briefly switched to Safari. When I came back, my note didn't exist anymore. I should have saved? Well, that has its own problems: it takes a ludicrous 6 taps (or more) to get back to editing the note you were just working on. That's right, hit save, then tap 6 different buttons or fields to get back to where you were.
A must have
newmarek 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't just give out stars and this app earns all five. I love this app and I wish more people knew about it. Evernote for the Mac Pc or web was amazing but the iPhone takes it to a new level. Keep up the good work.
Evolving app
zagom 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Evernote is not perfect, but at least it is getting better. The 1.01 update has fixed pending note, and viewing note issues I used to have. Evernote makes archiving thoughts, webpages, images, etc easier then any other program I have used.
2 stars for not living up to potential
nm3lin 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I really hate to do this, because I use evernote on iphone regularly. The problem is I want to use it all the time but improvement is needed! Among other irritating design decisions, The latest update is what has earned 2 stars from me. Evernotes "offline" viewing and syncing that so many customers have been asking for is finally here. And it is a joke. A completely useless feature at this point. We have all been waiting. Get your act together and give us real syncing, and my rating will go way up along with your customer satisfaction. Update: With the "2.0" update I have lowered my rating to 1 star. This update is another unbelievable dissapointment. Not becuase the program is no good, but because evernote has been ignoring user input entirely. This update claims to improve offline access. In reality, the offline access implementation continues to be a complete joke. This version in no way deserves a 2.0 version number. There are very few improvements, only one new feature (that users have shown no interest in) and evernote staff shows no intention of fulfilling customer needs.

Okay, I'm becoming part of the world rave for EVERNOTE.
Buggy
Groovy Amusement 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am unable to sync my notes to the server. Ok maybe they've been overwhelmed by all the new users, but that's a problem.
Buggy
kgpsyched 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This program is still VERY buggy. All of the photo notes I've created with this program are permanently "pending" and won't sync, and can't be searched. Recommend waiting for the next update of this app before downloading.
The best iPhone app yet!
EclipseEmpire 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you use Evernote, you have to get this app.
Have to be connected to wifi...
LordMeg 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
I like the app and the concept but since you have to be connected to the net to use it, it's pretty much worthless half the time on my Touch. I also don't like the idea of my notes being stored on a remote server instead of on my Touch. I don't put anything creepy on there but it just makes me a little uncomfortable. I'm removing it until there is an option to use it when not connected to wifi.
Great app, DESPERATELY needs one feature
daneel123 3.0 stars Version: 3.0
I won't go over all it's plus points because everyone's mentioned them enough already. I will say that it is hands down the best notes app in the app store and you can't beat the price. But I am sure that almost everyone who uses this app agrees with me when I say that this app needs true offline access to notes and it has unacceptably access times at the moment. I don't even see this is a feature request. The absence of proper offline access (which every other notes app in the app store implements by default btw) is a massive and glaring omission - a bug that needs to be fixed right away.
A great note system for the iPhone
Stephen431 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using Evernote through their beta and really like the implementation. This native app brings the needed offline access that was missing from the web app.
Two Issues...
Aladfar 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a happy Evernote user and have gone ahead an paid for the premium membership. The ability to take snapshot notes (whiteboards, books I want to buy, wine labels) is nearly indispensable.
Almost perfect
Pselus 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
If Evernote had a Due Date option it would be amazing. This app is pretty incredible though. It is like multiple apps in one.
MAY HAVE CRASHED MY IPHONE!??
Johnny Appleseed Fan 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
Ok, so several Apps are known to be "buggy" and/or cause crashes, freezes, and the dreaded "bricking" or white apple logo of death. I was hoping Evernote would not be one of them.... I was using the program for a bit when I tried the PhotoNote feature thing-- the App snapped a photo with the camera then FROZE and FROZE and FROZE; eventually the phone just re-set itself. When it re-started, NO App would boot up (I am still trying to fix the problem as I type) and I lost all iTunes directory info on the phone too -- so weird. The music still is there according to the Get Info (space free on phone) feature and also in the desktop iTunes but the phone things there is NO music in there! Somehow it wiped a directory or two?? Dang.
Account "freezes" for 30 days due to "bandwith" useage; won't open most file types

What is evernote?
I would like my notes available on my iPhone - All the time...
tonycspc 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I would like my notes available on my iPhone - All the time... Which includes being on an airplane. Why would I use a tool that won't provide me with the ability to access the information I need when I need it. And the lack of sub-notebook capability is a slap in the face to anyone who dares not use the almighty "tagging" system. Evernote, please stop telling me "how" to work and instead "help" me work.
Phenomenal tool...
Riginal_Zin 5.0 stars Version: 3.1.2
I purchased the Daylite Suite (desktop and iPhone app) with high hopes. After six months and about $250 invested, the recurring costs and ridiculous learning curve overwhelmed me. Sadly, I deleted it all. :( Then I found Evernote, reQall, and SmartTime. Amazing! Everything syncs together, and with my Google calendar. Evernote pics are text searchable, and with DocScanner I can scan any document, receipt, etc., and have it available on my phone. I also use CJournal as CCR... Yes, I know it seems to be a lot, but they work incredibly well together. I've maintained a small business (wine tastings), and full-time studies (an Econ major with a 4.0) with this combination. Oh, and all of these apps are intuitive; no learning curve! :)
