Exitium: Saviors of Vardonia (iPad review)
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Aug 2011 19:57:58 UTC +00:00
Exitium is a good RPG for iPad and iPhone from Minoraxis in which you assume the roll of one of 4 characters as a hero in the war raging in Vardonia. It is not a new idea as a game type, but you get to select from a beserker, a paladin, a priestess and a mage, covering both ranged and close quarter fighting. Each character brings with it special skills and powers, so you can play the game in a few different ways. You will need to make your way through missions with plenty of sub-missions along the way, and you can gain more and better weapons and potions as you go along. The story and maps are vast, and you will have to in and out of various mapped locations as you go ahead, and luckily there are two options for saving your progress. I found that the virtual controller Read More
In a lot of ways, if you've played one Korean RPG, you've played them all, and if you've played one 16-bit inspired action-RPG, you know exactly what to expect from another -- but Minoraxis' Exitium: Saviors of Vardonia [$1.99] hopes its ideas about multiple narratives and play styles is enough to separate it from the abundance of action-RPGs in the App Store. The majority of the gameplay elements are going to be familiar -- the hack, slash, then loot formula is here in abundance as is the need to grind through respawning enemies to get enough experience and goods to tackle the next area. The game controls exactly like you expect, but the iPad offers enough screen real estate to keep the fully customizable interface from being overbearing. The thing with the controls is, they feel weird -- even after several hours, it never clicks in the way you want it Read More

Finally, but not without flaws
Xantarnet 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Finally a action rpg with high res art, not just zoomed way out, or blurry (inotia 3). Also the UI is fairly minimal(unlike across age). Having 4 character story lines allows for replays even with the same world map. Now with all that said there are some flaws. 4 way movement is a major problem, I did not like Across Age's 8 way movement, but it at least allowed for diagonal movement. This movement scheme does not. The skill tree for the berserker class is nearly non-existent and (as far as I know) no clear reference for the in game achievements that also grant stat changes. I would have preferred the ability to distribute. Attributes after each level, which the game seems to take care of for you. All in all it is a pretty good game, does it beat other games in it's field? Sort of, it's UI is nice. Quite better than some others. It is honestly retina/iPad resolution(unlike inotia 3). The art style is .... Well it is on par with other Korean mobile RPGs. As I have not completed it yet, I cannot know for sure. But, I have a suspicion that the game really is 4 intros and 2 real story lines. With the outside chance that the real evil is a universal bad guy = 1 true boss.So at it's release price, grab it. But beware of some control issues and a crash issue with auction house items in the mail box o iPad 2 ios 4.3.4
Brilliant
Malodorus 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Well done! Animations are seamlessly fluid, well thought out storyline, gorgeous environments, and I love the hidden missions which can be very rewarding. I must say the only thing that isn't fantastic is the music, it doesn't feel as engaging as the rest of the game, but nonetheless an altogether great title.
The controls
Oakshay 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This looks awesome and I want to dive in, but the controls are something like out of control. Can you please smooth the controls and make the movement better?
Fantastic? Oh Hell Yeah
dreadnok 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Lets break it downt his game has it all great graphics, its a visual feast for your eyes the art when people talk is great, smooth gameplay, you can trade online with other players , the IAP is not really needed since you earn coins with achivements, great weapon and item drops so you can actually find some of the really good weapons without buying speaking of which you can combine items to create better weapons plus jewels for weapons Four I said four characters to play with each with a different story line that cross paths, that four different chances to like this game so mega replay value you can even trade weapons between your characters and the world is huge I found it a steel for that price team Mage all the way

The best ARPG on iOS So Far!

This game is great for gameplay and graphics. Has four characters for four different play through gonna be a long game!
Everything you want in an rpg "ON IPOD"
EternalPenSword 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It has fast paced realtime gameplay, multi-tale story, equipment control, simplicity, challenge and a great interface as far as handhelds go this is a fantastic rpg, though I haven't played far I can see the polish put into this game. This should be a eye opener to other developers.
Pretty, with poor design decisions.
Lewis Giles 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The game is pretty, but there were some serious red flags as far as design goes early on. First the mage's basic attack doesn't cost mana at the first level, which is good because his melee attack is suicide. But after it improves to skill level 2 it suddenly becomes a 1 mana attack and requires constant consumption of potions. Add his mana shield and the Mage basically needs a potion I.V. to survive. The priestess gets an MP regen skill, why not the Mage? It does not benefit the player. Also the melee attack causing the screen to shake is senseless and distracting. The animations are fluid, but the speed of the game is very uneven, speeding up and slowing down. And the dialogue is poorly translated at best. Games like Reccetear for the PC have recently showcased that even indie titles can receive a quality localization. The four way movement hardly seems a far thing to complain about because it is a major problem in EVERY iOS game in this genre. But there it is, horrible, unnatural four way movement- just like every other poorly made action rpg on the app store. Solomon's Keep and Boneyard are just about the only games to get it right in this genre. This game is pretty I suppose, and well animated. And there is a decent scenario hidden under the poor translation. But I'm afraid some very novice design flaws are going to prevent me from ever finishing it.
