After launching a brand new Windows Phone app, Facebook has once again updated its Android client. The new version brings several new features, including (from the change log): Moreover, I guess some bugs have been squashed under the hood to make for an overall more stable experience. All in all, you should update the Facebook app or in unlikely case you still don’t have it running on your smartphone, hit the link below to get it from the Android Market. Facebook, LinkedIn update their Android apps
Calendar16 Fri, 03 Feb 2012 10:24:57 UTC +00:00
Two of the largest social networks, Facebook and LinkedIn, updated their Android apps. First comes the new member of the stock exchange, which app got some handy new features, including: In comparison, LinkedIn’s app got a much smaller update, adding the ability to share profiles with anyone in your network or via email from any member profile. Additionally, there are some under the hood bug fixes that were affecting Android 4.0 users — i.e those of you with the Galaxy Nexus… Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. Google has just announced an “incremental” update to Ice Cream Sandwich that will now serve as the base version of the OS. From this point forward, manufacturers looking to update their handsets to ICS will be doing so with Android 4.0.3. According to the Android Developers blog, 4.0.3 will be rolling out to production phones and tablets “in the weeks ahead.” While this is a good sign that manufacturers are just about ready to start rolling out updates, not all developers are ready for the jump. The update to 4.0.3 isn’t exactly earth shattering compared to any other version of Android 4.0.x. There’s plenty of optimizations packed inside, as well as some big fixes, Bluetooth enhancements and graphic improvements. There’s also some new APIs for developers to play with that pertain to the camera, calendar and more. As badly as I’d like to see these changes brought to a device near Read More

Facebook Timeline hits Android app, iOS mobile site
Calendar16 Thu, 15 Dec 2011 20:25:40 UTC +00:00
Today the new Timeline Facebook layout has been rolled out to the general public to mixed reviews, and that launch includes mobile. The official Facebook app for Android now sports the new look, as well as the mobile site for iOS devices. This isn’t to say the iOS Facebook app won’t be getting Timeline at some point; in fact, the original launch showcased an iPhone running the feature just fine. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, the new layout offers a nice big banner image behind your profile picture, then blasts through your updates in a chronological order. The main idea is to present your whole life as a timeline, which in the long run actually makes a fair bit of sense, given how much people use Facebook. On Android in particular, Facebook has managed to compete with most of the preloaded Google apps for popularity. Of Read More

Android software
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Dec 2011 20:20:20 UTC +00:00
Lately I’ve been asked which Android software I’m using so I directed a friend to “my 30 essential Android apps,” the post I wrote about two months ago. However, not everyone likes my list – they want something more structured. Then I prepared the “must-have Android apps” list which goes through different kinds of Android software, helping people decided what they need for what purpose. I went into details in that article and that’s also not that cool for everyone – so here’s something in between, a structured list of apps divided by categories. By | 11 days ago I was recently in a bookstore and came across a couple books I was excited to check out right away. However, I didn’t grab them and run to the register as I would have a couple years ago…instead I pulled out my evernote app on my iPhone jotted down the title and author. Then as I walked out, I pulled up Amazon and purchased them with 1-click for my Kindle app. Within approximately 90 seconds I had the books in my hand, and for cheaper than the bookstore price. Mobile apps…are my best friend for a person who’s on the go constantly and wants everything easily accessible from a simple and easy to use device. Nowadays the saying “there’s an app for that” goes without saying. However, is the app really that great? Is it inexpensive? Quick to download? Easy to use? Have an intuitive interface? Read More
Today Facebook announced that it is launching an update to its Android app that it is "two times faster than previous Android apps." This update looks a lot like the Facebook iPad app, all the way down to the Nearby option, which was previously called Places and, previous to that, Check-In. Messages and notifications start at the top of the screen, which should make navigation around the app much simpler. The menu is now located on the left-hand side of the app. Users don't have to switch back-and-forth from the Home screen just to see events, news feed and messages and other features. Now everything is located in one space. Slowly but surely, the world's biggest social network is beginning to converge its platform UIs. The big question is, will users like the new UI? Historically, Facebook has been slow to update its Android apps. When it finally does, it packs Read More

Facebook for Android has historically been rather poor compared to its iPhone counterpart, so we’re glad to see that the app is receiving a makeover. Today we’re launching an updated Facebook app for Android. It’s now quicker and easier to view photos, get messages and navigate around the app. The update is being pushed out to the Market today, so keep an eye out! Read More
Facebook Android App Gets Faster, Easier
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Dec 2011 20:31:26 UTC +00:00
by Facebook unveiled an updated Android app Wednesday — one with a new menu, improved photo capabilities and re-positioned buttons. The tweaks make photos and albums “up to two times faster,” according to Facebook’s product manager Keith Peiris in blog post. It also simplifies the way users share pics, edit captions and read comments. Facebook also introduced a new left-hand menu so users won’t have to back peddle to the main menu. In addition, Facebook moved the buttons for notifications and messages to the top of the app instead of just on the main menu. The update will be available on soon in the Android Market. While Facebook’s announcement doesn’t mention a standalone Places app called Nearby, rumor has it that one will eventually be released. The social network already has a standalone app for sending messages and texts called Facebook Messenger, which came out in August after Facebook acquired group-messaging Read More
Widgets for Android - the essential list
Calendar16 Fri, 11 Nov 2011 18:25:26 UTC +00:00
So you want to install some widgets on your Android smartphone but are not sure which ones will help you out and which ones will, well, just occupy the precious screen estate. I’ve been testing so many options and here’s my definite list of must have widgets followed by the “optional stuff,” which I don’t use but know some people who love ‘em. Without further ado, let’s roll… One of the reasons I’m using an Android smartphone rather than the iPhone is that the latter doesn’t allow me to see my tasks without starting some app. With GTasks, you get to see all of your upcoming tasks at glance, right on the homescreen. Tasks are, as expected, synchronized with Google Tasks, allowing you to manage them from your computer. I also use GTasks as my shopping list. This tiny widget shows few of your upcoming calendar entries. You can choose which Read More

Worth Reading? -1 [1 votes] The fine folks at Nielsen over at Nielsen Wire have done some calculating and have found a couple of interesting statistics. First, and perhaps most obviously, from what Nielsen Smartphone Analytics have come up with after metering thousands of Android smartphones, the average Android smartphone user spends 67% of their on-device time, or 56 minutes per day, on apps, while 33% of their smartphone time is spent on the mobile web. This is of course an average person who only spends about an hour and a half on their device a day, a figure I’m sure all of you trump before breakfast is over. Then comes the information on the apps. What’s interesting here is that the top 10 apps in the Android Market do really appear to hold sway over the device market with a steel grip. The public eye’s been turned to Android security in recent months, but it’s nothing new for Google. The matter of data collection and privacy standards has been re-visited with the Wall Street Journal’s latest expose, revealing Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) partaking in controversial methods of gathering consumer information. The Journal points out Google’s differentiated method of data collection, saying that location data appears to be transmitted regardless of whether an app is running. Android’s safety has been questioned tirelessly as of late, but the discussion around Google’s data collection methods isn’t a new one. Google found itself defending the Street Views initiative, which collected hyper-local photo and Wi-Fi data. The proliferation of Internet-capable phones has greatly increased the opportunities and use cases for Google to collect and calculate data. While Google uses this data for things like traffic maps, street-level map views and local search recommendations, the true power behind Read More
Facebook's Android app just got a little bit better as the social giant has pushed an update that adds in the ability to tag your friends in posts from within the app. Previously, you would have to load up the full website to get that functionality. As a reminder, to tag a friend you start by typing the "@" symbol and immediately start typing out the person's name. A box showing the most likely results pops up below the text entry field and you can close in on the person you want by typing more of their name.  Other features of version 1.5.3 include a "Find Friends" feature and the ability to add your phone number to your profile plus a smattering of bug fixes. Apps Look Better On iOS Or Android?
Calendar16 Mon, 11 Apr 2011 14:43:35 UTC +00:00
Increasingly, many developers are producing the same apps for both iOS and Android. However, according to, these like apps look better on iOS devices. Is this really true? And if so, why? First, some clarification: It goes without saying that Android Gripes is anti-Android. After all, the title of the blog itself gives that away. In fact, according to the writer’s blog page, he says, “I admit that I am a “fanboy,” if you really want to use that word.” Therefore, the entire premise of his argument is biased, at best. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Android Gripes compares three apps, Meebo IM, Facebook, and Speedtest.net. Each is available on both platforms and are produced by the same company. Blame it on SXSW, but social networking apps were all the rage this week, topping the charts in the Android Market. A fresh update from Facebook enhanced photo uploads for group and wall sharing, while group chat tools like GroupMe helped friends stay connected during one of the largest geek fests of the year. GroupMe gained some traction at SXSW this year, an app offering free group messaging with all your friends. Group phone contacts accordingly, and send messages direct or via SMS. You can attach media files, start conference calls and see your group members’ location on a map. The free Android app is a great way to centralize communications, especially at large-scale events. Your official Android Facebook app ought to be updating itself right about now, with the new version (v1.5.1) including support for what Facebook is calling “Facebook Deals”. Here’s the official line on the changes from Facebook: Everybody loves a deal. Now you to can get access to Facebook Deals with the new Facebook for Android v1.5.1 – available free from the Android Market today. This update also fixes a number of bugs and includes all the goodness of Chat and push notifications (for 2.2+ devices) that was in v1.5. This updated Android app actually launched late last week, but only today has the Facebook Deals service launched in the UK. So you should be able to use it. But we don’t get any Facebook Deals because we live in the country, where there aren’t any places to “check in” to. You might see some Facebook Deals on your Android app if Read More

Finding stellar Android apps isn't the easiest task, but that certainly doesn't mean they don't exist. Here's the cream of the crop. Twitter: The official Twitter app is good enough for almost everyone. Along with giving you a clean, easy way to keep track of your timeline and updating your status, Twitter for Android also has a snazzy swipe down to refresh feature. Free. Facebook: Facebook is finally decent on Android and now actually brings some unique features, namely the front page side-scroll of friend's recent photos and a pull up notification window. Free. Google+: It's Google's big soiree into social "sharing". The app has it all: a stream that shows what your friends are talking about (like Facebook), Huddle which is an easy to set up group chats (like GroupMe) and will even automatically upload the pictures you take on your phone to the cloud (like iCloud). Once you get Read More
By: Tina Chubb | January 28, 2011 | We have some great news now for those of you who own an Android device and currently use the Facebook for Android app to access the popular social networking website. We’ve just learned that Facebook has recently released an update for the app, which is said to have added the Deals feature. As Eric M. Zeman over on the phonescoop.com website recently reported, the new Deals feature allows Android users who check into certain venues via the Facebook app to see and access any special deals that may be available. The updated version of the app does require Android 2.2 or later. According to Chloe Albanesius from pcmag.com, version 1.5.1 – which is available to download for free from the Android Market – is also aimed at fixing a number of bugs that users had previously reported. Some of you Android users out there may have noticed that the Facebook application has been updated in the Market. What new features does it include? Well, push notifications for when you get a new wall post or direct messsage, and real-time chat with your friends who are online. Chat is a huge addition, and long-awaited by many users; now that both iPhone and Android have official Facebook chat support, one can only hope that BlackBerry isn’t far behind.  The last significant update to this particular client was the introduction of the Places check-in service which leaves me wondering what else there is to add to the app. Anything you’re really hurting for? Location-based check-ins are becoming the new “it” thing for a small subset of the population.  The two biggest names (for now) Foursquare and Gowalla have seen some impressive growth over the last year.  Foursquare has 4 million users up from merely 170,000 at the end of 2009 (source), and Gowalla has over 500,000 users (source).  There is also the lesser known SCVNGR who is really beginning to gain momentum of it’s own, which as of November had half a million members, though it was not confirmed how many were active users (source).  Each of these LBSN (Location Based Social Networks) has it’s own personality and options. Foursquare, has the largest number of users, offers Specials for either checking in, or if you are Mayor of a spot. Gowalla offers Pins, kind of like stamps in a passport; as well as Trips – a list of locations grouped together by either geographic Read More

Android social networkers on the go can now enjoy an updated Facebook app that adds Groups and Places—features added to the PC version over the course of the last few months—as well as an improved notification system. It isn't a radical departure from the version that came before it, but Groups and Places give users new toys to play with, and the new notifications (which are now integrated into the app itself, instead of sending users to Facebook's mobile site) brings much-need cohesiveness. Interface Once you've download and launched the app, you're treated to an easy-on-the-eyes blue-and-white color scheme with a layout that's very similar to the Apple iPad version—the app features three rows of icons that let you quickly access News Feed, Profile, Friends, Messages, Events, Photos, and Requests (oddly, Chat, which has been a staple of the iPhone version is still, sadly, absent here). Beneath the main icons is Read More

Facebook Android App Gets Places, Groups | Android Apps

For those who are not aware, Facebook Places works similar to Foursquare and other location-based social networking apps. It’s really Facebook’s take on the flourishing location-aware market. And since other apps are letting you share your check-ins with your Facebook anyways, so might as well have the Places feature on the Facebook mobile app as well. The other new feature of the Facebook Android app has something to do with Facebook Groups. The app now lets you message a group of friends using the mobile app. You can create groups right inside the app while using your Android phone and message your friends right there and then. Another new feature that was added, although just a minor one is the refreshed notification feature. This time, the app will no longer send you off to the browser but will take you to the appropriate destination with the app itself. Please wait... Please Read More
Facebook Updates Its Android and iPhone Apps
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Nov 2010 16:18:13 UTC +00:00
At Facebook's Mobile Event this morning in Palo Alto, Mark Zuckerberg announced that among the various location- and mobile-oriented updates the company was making today, that updates to its Android and iPhone apps are now available. And that's great news for Android users, as Zuckerberg admitted that the Android app has always "been a little behind." Until today, Android users didn't have access to Places or Groups via the Facebook app (although the latter was unavailable on the iPhone app as well). But it's Places in particular, particularly after today's big push for "mobile, social, and local" at Facebook's event, that will be a crucial addition for Android users. Today's updated version of the Android app adds Places and Groups, as well as improves the Notifications from within the app. The Android app still lacks the Chat feature, something iPhone users can still gloat about. But today's release brings the Android Read More
No, Facebook did not announce their own phone, but they did reveal that their Android app is getting a refresh. The update should be available in the Android Market soon and it adds new features like places, groups, and improved notifications. The focus of Facebook’s mobile event were several new key features for developers including single sign-on, an updated location API, and their deals platform. These new services create what Facebook calls a true horizontal platform and will allow developers to create new types of applications and experiences across all the mobile operating systems. It looks like the update just went live so I’m going to go play with it and report on it later. What do you think of the new Facebook app for Android? What other features would you like them to add? Facebook has updated it’s Android app today in attempt to achieve “feature-for-feature” parity with that other mobile platform. After CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained why Facebook for Android has been so lackluster, the company has released a new update that may quell some of the bickering from displeased Android users. Support for Facebook Places and Groups headlines the latest edition of Facebook for Android. Users can now access Places within the app rather than having to visit the mobile website to check-in or see their friends’ locations. Facebook revealed today that partners like Groupon, The Palms Casino, and other developers will soon be able to use Places as a way to offer deals and incentives to customers, but that will be limited to members in the U.S. My personal highlight of this update is that Facebook no longer relies on the browser for viewing notifications or photos. Android's official Facebook app just got a pretty major upgrade in Version 1.3.0. You'll immediate notice the difference in the user interface, with a photo reel at the bottom that lets you quickly flip through your friends' recent photos and videos. And see that notifications bar at the bottom? Drag it up for the list of recent notifications.  There's also one-tap access to post a status update or search for friends, video playback withing the app using H.264 encoding, support for Facebook events (review, see details, RSVP) within the app, and respond to friend requests. We can't help but wonder how much of a hand Erick Tseng had in this, given that the former senior Android product manager left Android for Facebook just a few short months ago. by Android users, rejoice! Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg will now be forced to feel your pain. The Android app for Facebook could be charitably described as less functional than the iPhone app. We’re sure there are good reasons for this, the greatest of which is likely market share. With iOS-running phones composing more than half of all smartphones, according to recent research, it’s in Facebook’s best interest to focus on this segment first. Still, for the ever-growing number of Android device users who also would like a little Facebook mobile action, the pared-down feature set of Facebook for Android makes us feel neglected — the redheaded stepchildren of Facebook mobile users. But now that “Zuck” is one of us, all that’s about to change… right? Historically, Facebook has made fairly few gestures toward the Android platform. It launched its official Android app last fall and rolled out an SDK Read More

It will be interesting to see if the application evolves as a result of his usage.  Don't forget that lead Google/Android developer Erick Tseng recently bolted for Facebook which could also indicate a better, more robust app is on the way. by Don Reisinger Google Goggles, which is available for free in the Android Market, is a must-have for any Droid X owner. The service allows users to perform visual searches from their phones. The app then analyzes the photo and delivers Google Search results based on that image. It works quite well in most cases, but it should be noted that it's still a work in progress. Over the past couple of months, Google’s Android mobile operating system has made significant headway, both in the public and in the tech world, with reports showing Android sales catching up to the iPhone. Yet we’ve also seen multiple sources note that Android has not succeeded on Facebook. That judgment has been based on the stats for Facebook’s Android smartphone app. At right, you can see Facebook’s own monthly active user measurement for Android, which led to the confusion. By appearances, the Facebook for Android app has only 68 monthly active users. We’ve checked in with Facebook about the Android app, and gotten the real story: the mobile app has over six million MAU. Big brands have recognized the power of social media marketing, and that’s extended to the mobile realm as well.  iPhone apps for some of the most recognized brands such as Starbucks (, ) and MasterCardhave created a direct channel for communication between the company and its customers. Recent launches of mobile apps on other platforms have extended the reach of big brands, with more and more moving to Android devices as part of their overall branding efforts.  Progressive’s new Android app took a jab at Geico, who’s recent mobile push didn’t include an Android app.  While you can receive quotes from competitors on Progressive’s free Android app, existing customers can also file claims, complete with photos and GPS locales of accidents. Bank of America is one of the few financial institutions with a secure and official presence in the Android Market.  The free Android app offers access to your bank account for paying bills and Read More
When Facebook first launched its Android application in 2009, one complaint was the lack of a messaging inbox. On Friday, the company introduced version 1.2, which includes that long-awaited feature. The upgrade also adds multitouch in the photo viewer, though that upgrade is not advertised. Regardless, the addition of these two new features now makes the Android app feel competitive with the iPhone application. The upgrade is available now in the Android Market. This post originally appeared on AppScout. Read More
Facebook has announced an update to its "Facebook for Android" application. The update, which enabled the application to graduate to version 1.2, endows it with the much sought after messaging support. You can now view and send messages and updates to your buddies and to the pages that you subscribe to. The application supports threaded messaging as well. The application can be downloaded from the Android Market and like the previous version, it is absolutely free. It was back in September 2009 that Facebook first announced its official Android application. Back then, it was a barebones application and all you could do using it was to view your wall, read your news feed, update your status and comment or "like" posts on your news feed.  Users also complained about the lack of support for Facebook chat - which incidentally is missing even in this update. We can only hope the application Read More
Android's Facebook app got an update yesterday, bringing it to Version 1.2 and bringing native inbox support along with it. In exchange, you lose the option to take and upload a picture from within the main page you see above, but that's not really a big deal given how easy it is to do from the native Android or Sense (or Motoblur or whatever) camera apps, and you can do it from the news page. We'd still like to see Facebook chat, and maybe less reliance on the mobile site, but it's still a welcome update. If you haven't updated yet, take a gander in the Android Market downloads section. Thanks to everyone who sent this in. Read More
Facebook Android App gets Inbox support - Gajeto

Any Android users will have to agree that the native client for Facebook is a bit dull, you can't create an event, you can't use Facebook chat and you can't even see your inbox. You will get notified though if there's a new message on your inbox, but if you tap the notification bubble, it will brings you to mobile Facebook via browser. But that ends today, Facebook for Android is finally got a new update, while the update does not include the Facebook chat or managing an Event, the update however, brings the Inbox feature that many users has been wanting. The Inbox page has three tabs for your new received messages, a new subscription updates and also for the sent messages. You can even compose the message and send it to one or even more of your friends. Other than the new Inbox feature, I haven't noticed anything different, Read More

The Facebook Android app may be good, but it’s been lacking one key feature that has kept it from being as functional as the full Facebook website. Until today, the app has been missing support for Facebook’s threaded messages – a key component to the social network – that iPhone users have been playing with for a while. Today, Facebook has updated it’s Android app with a messaging feature that will allow users to read and send messages to others in their network. Anyone with an Android phone can find the updated Facebook app sitting in the Android Market. The app is free, as is the update, so it’s not going to cost you anything to download and install. What’s new? Well, from the looks of it, just the messaging feature. The app now supports threaded message view, shows send messages and subscription updates, and even allows you to send messages Read More
While you can register many complaints about Facebook’s native Android app, the fact that new message and friend request notifications bumped you to the mobile Facebook site is high up on my list of reasons why the app just missed the mark. Now Facebook, amid all of their site announcements and updates over the past week, has released an updated version of Facebook for Android featuring — you guessed it — inbox support. They eliminated the option to open up your phone’s camera for snapping and uploading pics to your Facebook profile (I don’t see it being missed very much) in order to add room for the Inbox icon, and you now have direct access to all of your messages (sent and received) and page updates. A big improvement for sure. A warning: some users are reporting the new update has been force-closing on many devices. So far I have not experienced Read More

UPDATE: Yesterday, there were some questions about about whether this was the real Facebook app. Despite the Gmail address associated with the app and the Facebook app page saying that this was not created by Facebook, I believe this is the official app. The official developer listed in the Android Market is “Facebook,” a registered trademark that would be pretty stupid for a third-party to violate. As others have pointed out in the comments section, this app doesn’t require authorization, something ALL third-party apps have done quite annoying in the past. Until Facebook comes out and says otherwise, this is the official Facebook Android app in my eyes. —————————- The official Facebook.com Android application has finally entered the Android Market. After months of openly ignoring Android and leaking info that it would eventually appear, the world’s most popular social networking website has released an official client for the Android platform. Thanks to the xda-developers forums, or more specifically Twitter for pointing me to the post, I am soon going to be checking out the updated Facebook app. Of course, by updated Facebook app, I am referring to the version that was released with the Motorola Droid. As to what exactly has changed, or has been added as compared to the Market version. Honestly that is a good question, and so far the best I can come up with is that “the new facebook app is so much better than the original.” Now, I realize that is a pretty sad answer, and normally I would not run out and just take the word like that, but figure anything would be an improvement over the current Market version. That said, if you are feeling like being a guinea pig, hit the link below to get your own copy of the APK to install. Read More

Facebook for Android

Posted by Comments Facebook for Android™ makes it easy to stay connected and share information with friends. You can share status updates from your home screen, check out your news feed, look at your friends’ walls and user info, upload photos and share links. Price: Free Pros Cons The app that dupped us all into thinking it was the official Facebook app for Android, yet a 3rd party developed Facebook app. The app is pretty limited in features in comparison to top apps like Babbler and Bloo. Upload photos, take a pic and upload, view your Feed, read/write to your Wall, Comment on Friends Wall, Like and Dislike comments. Facebook apps have such a high demand because so many people use the social network. The app is intuitive and easy to use. Possibly multiple times daily. The user interface resembles what could come from Facebook’s brand. Clean, organized, and mobile optimised. Read More

Still I would wish Facebook developed better for Android instead of paying all attention to iPhone. Still, glad they're slowly making this app better.

I hate it. the phone i have came with an app for facebook already but it got deleted somehow , so when i got this i thought it would do good. Nope.
tom 3.0 stars
I hate how it goes from app to web. It should just stay in the app.
Mark 4.0 stars
It'd not bad, but it's not perfect. A lot of the time it's just redirecting you to touch.facebook.com, and you're not really in the app anymore.

I recommend FriendCaster instead. After so many up and down days with this app, I just got rid of it, if you are looking for an alternative, friend caster is the best fb I've seen.

Why do you need to read, edit and send my SMS and MMS messages?! No thanks, I'm not updating with these unnecessary permissions!

Allow tablets like mine to update. Have the Archos 70 and stuck with 1.5.4. But with the mostly bad feedback maybe Im better off with it.

Terrible. Its actually ridiculous how bad this app is. Its slow, unresponisive, and had numerous bugs. The ios version is infinitely better.
