Social video browsing app Showyou just launched version 3.0 of its iPad application, a major update with a ton of new features. Competing in a hot space with competitors like Fanhattan, Shelby.tv, Squrl, Vodio and others, Showyou offers a grid-like view for browsing the videos your friends are sharing on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube and Vimeo. Once connected, you can watch any of the over 30 million videos indexed by the Showyou search engine. With version 3.0, four months in the making, the focus is offering users a better way to find content and new ways to drill down deeper into their favorite videos and topics. The Showyou application now pulls in over 5,000,000 videos retrieved from users’ Facebook and Twitter feeds per day, and includes nearly 700,000,000 “social signals” (data from tweets, other metadata) in its search index. According to founder Mark Hall, Showyou is now handling a video volume of Read More

But the app has come along way in a short time — migrating to the iPhone and adding new content — and the company is today announcing an update that offers up way more functionality and content, though it may not be the kind of content you’d expect. If you don’t already know, Fanhattan is an app that lets you discover new TV shows and movies that are available Read More
I’ve always enjoyed using the Fanhattan app. It’s smart, available on both iPhone and iPad, and just makes getting to what I want to watch easier. Period. But there was one small gripe I had. In fact, it’s not even a gripe. It’s just how we all feel about anything good: we want more. Fanhattan has this great Smart Browse system that lets you filter down content by genre, rating, release date, service providers, and then choose how you’d like that content to be sorted. The only problem is that the more filters you use, the fewer options you have left to choose from — sometimes, no options at all. But that’s about to change, with three new media partners joining the Fanhattan folds: Crackle, Lifetime, and PBS. Crackle has free movies and television shows both from today and yesteryear, including Snatch, A Few Good Men, Starship Troopers, All in the Read More

Fanhattan is a free iPad app that feeds you a gallery of available movies and TV shows from Netflix, Hulu Plus, iTunes Movies, Crackle, ABC iPad app, Amazon Video on Demand, BlockBuster Video, Cinema Now, Playstation Network, Vudu, and Zune into a single easy to browse app. Walt Mossberg called Fanhattan a “launchpad”. You just choose your favorite services from a list and Fanhattan shows you all the available content. The power is in having a single source so you can search for the entire set of movies and media that you have access to, but might not be aware of. Since the app is free you might be wondering how they make any money? They take a cut on the iTunes movies you rent, plus a commission on new Netflix signups they generate. Fanhattan does a wonderful job of suggesting shows and movies to you, so it will actually aid Read More

In this continuing series here on ReadWriteWeb, we round up some of our favorite new applications for smartphones each month, specifically for iPhone and Android devices. This spring edition includes some major new launches on Android, like Netflix and Google Music, as well as some incredible technology leaps on iPhone, like the app which identifies trees by their leaves! As a bonus for this month, we've added a section with notable app updates and another featuring new tablet apps. New Apps for iPhone LeafSnap: Possibly the most ground-breaking app released in recent days, LeafSnap lets you identify trees by taking a picture of their leaves. Created by researchers at Columbia University, University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institute, the app is like something you would see on TV, roll your eyes at and scoff, "as if that exists!" Well, technology moves fast - it exists! And, according to the app's description, Read More

Wow this app is so easy. After just a few minutes you just get how to navigate the screens. Great information and includes TV shows. How cool is that!

More options, please
dann bohn 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
This app has monstrous amounts of potential. I want a setting where I can browse only services I use EVERYWHERE not just the "smart browse" section. please consider an app-wide "services I use" option, thanks!
Great start
Vincent Ferlita 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
A little bit too much info in one. Hard to figure out what's what.
A somewhat unstable app w/ a lot of potential
Mystico1020 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I love the interface and the concept behind this app. I think it could become a huge part of where I get my entertainment. That being said, the app is plagued by lag, freezing up, and the rare but frustrating crashes that I've experienced. If the app can get past these small technical issues, however, it has potential to be one of the greatest iPad apps available.
Could be great. Isn't there yet
LMP-1 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
Hard to navigate. Doesn't show whats on HBO-Go for free (if you have HBO already) but does show you the expensive version to buy on iTunes. It's a good start but only gets a B- from me.
Absolutely blown away!
Mike Rocco 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This feels like it was designed as part of the OS. The navigation is effortless--and surprisingly fun. Maintains a beautiful look and feel even though it is aggregating through several sources.
Great!
Flyingfilly 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This is a terrific app. Take a couple of minutes to become familiar with the navigation and you'll be on your way to a central hub for entertainment.
Pretty, but confusing
MisterGoodman 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I think Fanhattan may be the most attractive and useful app I've ever given up on. They've clearly given the interface a lot of thought, but it's not particularly intuitive to anyone who isn't willing to commit an equal amount of thought. The television section in particular offers a tremendous amount of useful information, but getting to it is awkward. I'd like to be able to just swipe through the episode summaries, but instead I apparently have to bring up a thing that let's me click on individual episode numbers, and then I can see the information, but it's unpleasantly dimmed. More clicks just subjects me to more of their clumsy interface, and I can never quite get back to where I want to be despite using their strange swipe motion for "back". I've given up on the app, but I'm going to keep it hidden away on my iPad in case they ever overhaul the interface. (There's also a bug where I chose to filter by multiple popular genres, only to be told there was no content that matched that criteria. Really, no dramas, comedies OR family movies? They need to fix that.)
Fanhattan
Bordy99 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
When I go to open this it crashes What,s the deal?
No Rotation = No Use
HutchTech 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I'm weary of apps that refuse to rotate. This looks nice, but it will play second fiddle to the Aol. app...for now. Also, you can't read the text blurb on the right beyond the sentence or two visible. If you click to read the text it takes you into the episode, reviews, actors section.
Elevator pitch
Mobile CPA 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I tried it. It's deleted from my iPad after 10 minutes. I don't see the value of another movie/ tv viewer. Walt Mossberg must have been paid for his review. Sorry.
Don't Like
Elmerlike 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
