Tons of apps on sale to kick off Memorial Day weekend
Calendar16 Fri, 25 May 2012 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
It seems like it's been a while since we had a big holiday weekend full of app sales, but the wait is over: Memorial Day is coming up in just a few days, and app developers are bringing down prices all over the store to celebrate! Man oh man that's a lot of great, really cheap games. Especially that Because We May sale -- seriously, go look at it, both for iOS and Steam. Read More
Fieldrunners 2 coming next month
Calendar16 Tue, 22 May 2012 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
Subatomic Studios, the makers of one of the iPhone's biggest early titles, Fieldrunners, have announced that a sequel is headed our way as soon as next month. The popular tower defense title is being updated with twenty new hand-painted levels, twenty towers (including a Link tower, which seems to be two towers with a deadly attack between them, as well as both a Nuke and a Railgun tower, for AoE or sniper damage, respectively). And there are two new game modes, to go along with the standard survival and time trial maps, there are now puzzle and sudden death maps to play as well. It sounds like a great title -- if you've been playing iPhone games since the beginning, you'll probably have fond memories of Fieldrunners. Fieldrunners 2 will arrive on the iPhone at the end of June, with an iPad version coming soon after. Read More
Frequent updates to Fieldrunners [$2.99 / HD] over the past few years has kept the tower defense title feeling fresh despite its age, but its upcoming sequel looks like the kind of continuation we've been dying for. Dozens new towers, new skills, new maps, new modes and new enemies are all part of Fieldrunners 2, which is due out on iPhone later this June and iPad "shortly after" this initial release. The original Fieldrunners was an excellent tower defense game that managed to stick out because of some really sharp twists. From what we've seen so far, Fieldrunners 2 is going to push that bar even further, and that's really exciting. When I think about possible themes for tower defense games, a tale about space pirates attacking a futuristic Earth in search of highly sought after ‘Spice’ is probably the last thing I’d think of. Yet, that’s exactly the premise of Spice Invaders [Free], a new freemium title from Chillingo. While the game itself is a nice take on tower defense, the bulk of the conversation unfortunately turns to its freemium elements which distract greatly from the actual game. As a tower defense game, Spice Invaders plays similarly to Fieldrunners [$2.99 / HD]. Players are charged with defending one (or more) bases in open-field maps. Enemies come in waves from a variety of different entrances, forcing you to build towers in such a way as to prevent them from taking out your base. Since the maps are open (with some featuring random barriers littered throughout the map), you can do this by Read More
There is no way to beat around the bush, so let's just get this out of the way from the start: Com2uS trademarking "tower defense," for Tower Defense: Lost Earth [$2.99 / HD] is a little bonkers, like if Call of Duty was granted a trademark and changed its name to First Person Shooter. Not only does it peeve off a bunch of developers caught in the legal crossfire, it also gives players incredibly lofty expectations for the final product when it's branded as the "officially trademarked" game of tower defense. Thankfully, it delivers, albeit through a kitchen sink approach more than an innovative one. This is in fact a tower defense game and you'll get every single tower defense trope you've ever run into. The core campaign takes the preset route approach, where you'll set up your units on a grid and the enemies will take a predestined path. There are, however, seven Read More
Pardon the messiness with this one. Earlier, Subatomic Games sent us word that it pushed a new update for both versions of Fieldrunners [$2.99 / HD] to Apple. We're still not sure what's in the iPhone / iPod update, but we do know the contents of the iPad update, which is live and has been, apparently, for more than 24 hours. So what's in it? As the headline so boldly states, new maps, new towers, and a new same-screen multiplayer component have been added. Specifically, the update adds a total of five maps, three of which are single-player only. The other two maps (which are takes on the added maps) support versus and cooperative, same-screen multiplayer. Each of the single-player maps adds a new tower to the mix. Subatomic shot us a list of all of these: Plasma Tower -- creates combo attacks when used with other plasma towers! Shotgun Tower -- fires Read More

Favorite Four – Tower Defense Games
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Aug 2010 18:04:46 UTC +00:00
By Rob LeFebvre on August 18th, 2010 Helping you sort through the mountain of Tower Defense games with four of our favorites. Hello there! It’s time once again for our Favorite Four, handpicked from the iTunes App Store just for you. This week, we’re looking at Tower Defense games. The genre is well worn across all gaming consoles, but perhaps no where as much as on the iOS itself (two full icon pages of iPhone game apps alone – try a search on ‘tower defense’). The concept is simple, yet addictive: place towers across a fixed or grid-defined path to keep bad guys, or creeps, from getting to your base or tower. The upside of so many these kinds of games is that you can find the ones that most appeal to YOU. Here are four of the ones that work for me. Zombie Attack This is one of the original Read More
So You Just Got an iPhone 4 – An App Store Gaming Guide
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Jun 2010 08:20:31 UTC +00:00
If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. In the interest of space, we Read More

I don’t have too much info on Super Turbo Action Pig, but I like the number of adjectives used in the name, and the above video is pretty sexy, too. If the art style looks a little familiar, that’s because it’s by the same artist behind the recent hit, Trenches, and the website for the “older” iPhone TD game, Fieldrunners. Super Turbo Action Pig doesn’t look to be anywhere near as complex as those games, but it does seem to feature some fluid animations, based on the way that pig wriggles and reacts to the thrusters on his super turbo jetpack (I can’t believe I just wrote that). I’m actually rather excited to see how this game turns out, as some of my favourite iPhone games (Canabalt, Tilt to Live) feature very simple premises and gameplay, but stay engaging because of the excellent sense of atmosphere and the great animations. 25 iPhone Games That Should Rock on the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Feb 2010 22:53:02 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/04/2010 at 2:53pm | by Andrew Hayward Apple's iPad announcement event didn't put an especially large focus on the gaming possibilities of the new device, but what was shown demonstrated how easily developers can modify current iPhone and iPod touch apps with just a brief time investment. We've already seen how updated versions of N.O.V.A. and Need for Speed: Shift will take advantage of the iPad, but it got us thinking -- how might some of the other best-selling or beloved iPhone games use the iPad's updated features to enhance the existing experience? Here's our list of 25 games we'd love to see enhanced for the iPad, but if you have your own dream app upgrade in mind, be sure to let us know in the comments! We love swapping Bejeweled 2's shimmering gems on our Macs, but we also dig the tactile feeling of actually flipping the gems in Read More

Touch Arcade has word that one of 2008's best iPhone games (our 2009 list is coming out this week), [iTunes link, $2.99], has released an update (1.3), in which they've released two new maps available as in-app purchases, and they've included OpenFeint 2.4 functionality, with messaging, chat, and everything else the in-game social network portends. The two new maps are called Skyway and Frostbite. Skyway boasts a metal floor with a few holes in it, which limit where you can place your units in the tower defense classic. Frostbite is a snowfield with a base in the middle to defend from attackers on all sides. Seems like both offer up some interesting twists on the gameplay -- they're 99 cents each (a fact that has the most recent iTunes reviews up in arms), but if you ask us, two bucks for new content is cheap, especially if you're a big Fieldrunners Read More
Remember Fieldrunners?  The game that basically started the tower defense craze in the App Store?  Well, whether you remember it or not, you may be happy to hear that it has finally received an update after sitting dormant in the App Store for the last nine months, but it comes at a small cost. Fieldrunners v1.3 adds OpenFeint 2.4 integration and two new maps.  OpenFeint allows you to challenge yourself and your friends thanks to online leader boards, achievements, and Facebook and Twitter integration.  OpenFeint 2.4 also adds a new chat and forum system, along with a new fan club area that allows you to add games as favorites and follow them and their developers to stay in touch. What should really have Fieldrunners fans excited is the two new maps: Skyway and Frostbite.  Skyway is a unique map in the sense that it has certain parts of the field missing, Read More

Calendar16 Tue, 29 Dec 2009 12:15:48 UTC +00:00
'Fieldrunners' 1.3 Update Released
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Dec 2009 02:23:24 UTC +00:00
At PAX this year we first got word that there was a Fieldrunners [App Store] update in the works with additional maps which was later confirmed along with the announcement of OpenFeint gold. Available now, Fieldrunners 1.3 includes everything we expected with both the latest and greatest of OpenFeint integration, and two new maps available via two 99¢ microtransactions. OpenFeint 2.4 adds even more XBOX Live-style features, and should be available in other OpenFeint-enabled games as developers update them to include it. Among the improvements is an instant messaging service that works across all OpenFeint games similar to the previously implemented chat, a new forum system, and the "fan club" area. In this new section you can add a game as a favorite, read developer announcements, subscribe to newsletters, and even suggest new features. Fieldrunners itself seems to be largely unchanged aside from two new maps: Skyway and Frostbite. Skyway is Read More
We ran in to Subatomic Studios back at the Penny Arcade Expo in September, and part of my chat with them included the mention of the new levels in the PSP version of Fieldrunners [App Store] eventually making their way to the App Store. These new maps are coming next month when the game is relaunched as the first member of OpenFeint's gold game program. Fieldrunners: Gold Edition will have an in-game store where these new maps will be sold as downloadable content, as well as being the first game to include OpenFeint 2.4 which will boast a number of new features including an in-game instant messaging service. Note, the "Gold Edition" will be a free update to current owners of Fieldrunners. Similar to our monthly game ratings, the OpenFeint Gold program aims to pick out games which are not only of the highest quality, but also make excellent use of Read More

Recently we looked at the plethora of tower defense games available for the iPhone. For anyone who looked at that list and wondered where they should actually spend your money, today’s article is for you. I’m not going to argue that the following five games are the best tower defense games on the platform, but I will tell you that if you decide to spend money on any (or all) of these games, you probably won’t be disappointed. I also tried to pick from a good range of gameplay types, so you can pick up a couple of these and get relatively different gameplay experiences. Price: 99 cents This is the hands down winner for adorable iPhone tower defense games. The premise is pretty simple, there are monsters trying to get under your bed and you have to stop them by placing your towers along set paths. The graphics are cute, Read More
It's uncanny. When known software gets repackaged for iPhones and iPod Touches and passes through the hallowed gates of the App Store, something happens: Almost invariably, it gets cheaper. Waaay cheaper. Good right? Well, not always. The App Store is a strange new place for developers. Veterans and newcomers engage in bareknuckle combat, driving prices down to levels people wouldn't have imagined charging just a few years ago. Margins drop to razor-thin levels while customers expect apps to get cheaper and cheaper, but with ever increasing quality and depth. For developers, for other software platforms and potentially for the increasingly fickle customers themselves, it's uncharted, and treacherous, territory. But the most bizarre thing of all is—in an effort to keep people in the App Store, and to prevent competitors from getting a toehold in the mobile app business—Apple's charting a course straight into it. "The App Store is a very competitive Read More

Where to begin? I didn’t always aspire to write about technology, but my complete lack of interest in a real social life got me noticed on a discussion forum about three years ago and led to a job offer. I’ve been slaving over a keyboard ever since. I became a Mac user just before that, purchasing the first generation Intel Macbook. I’ve never looked back, and just recently upgraded to the new 13-inch Macbook Pro (which I love). I also picked up an iPhone when it was first released and have upgraded every year, although I have to admit that I’m not happy with Apple’s app store policies and have strongly considered switching to an Android or S60 device. My favorite Mac programs include 1Password, Fluid and iBank. On the iPhone side I’m partial to Kindle, Fieldrunners and Byline (iTunes links). I have an absolute obsession about to-do applications and have Read More
First It Was Sony, Now Nintendo Wants Our Games
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Sep 2009 15:28:02 UTC +00:00
Some of our precious exclusive iPhone and iPod touch games have already made their way to Sony’s PSP and PSP Go, and now Nintendo wants in. Nintendo recently showed off their holiday lineup and within that lineup were a couple of well-known iPhone and iPod touch games.  The couple of games in question are Subatomic Studios’ Fieldrunners and Gameloft’s Castle of Magic.  Fieldrunners has already made our headlines once before by being ported to the PSP, but Castle of Magic is new on the non-exclusive list. Fieldrunners won’t be available until Q4 of this year, while Gameloft’s Castle of Magic should be hitting DSiWare within the next month.  DSiWare is similar to Sony’s PSN Store or the App Store, where Nintendo DSi users can download a variety of apps and games at low prices or even sometimes for free. Steve Jobs recently stated that the iPod touch is a “game machine” Read More
Wandering around the PAX floor today sniffing out iPhone news I came across Ash from Subatomic Studios showing off Fieldrunners [App Store] while handing out swag to anyone walking by. It's no secret that Fieldrunners is going to be a premiere title for the PSPGo's equivalent to the App Store. The game is obviously getting tweaked for the PSP, but the two new levels not found in the iPhone version of the game will be coming sometime this holiday season via downloadable content (DLC) at 99¢ per map. If you haven't seen the two new maps, check out this trailer for the PSP version. Frostbite is the winter themed one, and Skyway is the air field map. Another interesting point of the discussion may be of interest to other iPhone developers, according to Subatomic Studios, porting the game to the PSP Go was an easier transition than they initially expected. FUN GAME, but could use a few more tweaks!

I think the game itself is great right now; however, there are a couple of minor tweaks that I think should be considered.
Awsome

This s one of the best games I've played yet. The animation and graphics are amazing and the gameplay is exactly what you would expect. The AI is progressive in a way that make it challenging, but keeps it fun.

Love this game! Very fun and addictive! Can't wait to see what new content they add in the future :)

UnBrokenRank 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
WOW Just amazing. The graphics are the best I have seen for any TD's for the iPhone. Various towers for special uses. Able to sell towers. Different types of waves. Some things I would like to see in the future are anti-air towers and only affect air and maybe ground only towers. Great work guys can't wait for the next update
Most addictive game for iPhone yet!
Doctor Spin 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The graphics are great on this game. It doesn't crash. It saves from where you left off. It isn't too tough. Easy to pick up, hard to put down. I am actually happy I spent the $5 on this one. Buy it now and tell a friend. Really.

I personally hated Pixel Junk Monsters on the PS3. It looked great and was charming but was hopelessly difficult. Fieldrunners has appealing and detailed graphics, well done sound effects, but its game play is top notch, and the difficulty level is adjustable! Games can take some time to complete but can be paused. Highly recommended.
Blast to play, must buy, must buy now !

This has to be one of the best games I have downloaded for iPhone. I play it over and over again. Nice graphics, simple to play, challenging to beat I love it. If you are looking for an addictive game well worth the money then I urge you to get this one. I wish everyone would make games as nice as this one. Thank you for a great game.
Sweet game
Thabrownieviking 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fun enough to pry me away from my xbox for a few
Hooray
XIxSparrowxIX 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Finally a fun game for the iPhone/itouch.
please add a cheat function, just make the towers cheap
CHEATERZZZZZZZZ 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.3
there are some of us who don't want to modify our software but would love to have a cheat function. Just make it so that you can not submit your high score. And just make the towers cheap and upgrades cheap. For me the cheat function is fun. It is fun to play with the towers and see what you can do. Not everyone has to have fun in the same way. Otherwise a great game!
Buy this game now!
Apel 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very well balanced. Great visuals. Lots of attention to detail. Very fun and addicting
Worth the $5.00
ManiacalMatt 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The game does need some sound. The graphics are good, and work really well. There is only 100 levels and even on easy it is quite difficult. My entire screen was filled with towers and I still couldn't stop everything. The helicopters are the toughest. Hopefully, more will be added to the game, map challenges would be nice. I would like to see something in the line of not allowing the attackers to cluster on top of each other, it gets a bit confusing knowing what damage you are doing when there are 5 tanks sitting on top of each other. Hopefully, the programmers will continue to update this app and make it even better than it already it. Once again, needs some sound, I know having the sound of every tower shooting would be impossible, but at least give us something. Great app.
the most addicting game to date

awesome!

Great game for the price
R3ydium 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I do wish there were more then 100 waves, but other than that, this is the best iPhone or touch game I've played in a long while
Great game, but need some changes
Kunito84 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.3
One of the greatest game ive ever played on iphone. However, the recent updates makes the game to difficult. (the newest update did say that it makes the game less difficult). I managed to score over 450k+ with the basic version, but i cant even score any where near 300k with the new updates (same tactic used). I think some more bonus should be added after each level to provide player with additional cash. I bet that all player have the feeling that the little guys get tougher faster than our tower due to the lack of money. It doesnt seem fair when you only get the same amount of money for killing the same-but-much-tougher unit. Hope that there would be a much satisfactory update soon
Awesome TD game!
