Frequent updates to Fieldrunners [$2.99 / HD] over the past few years has kept the tower defense title feeling fresh despite its age, but its upcoming sequel looks like the kind of continuation we've been dying for. Dozens new towers, new skills, new maps, new modes and new enemies are all part of Fieldrunners 2, which is due out on iPhone later this June and iPad "shortly after" this initial release. The original Fieldrunners was an excellent tower defense game that managed to stick out because of some really sharp twists. From what we've seen so far, Fieldrunners 2 is going to push that bar even further, and that's really exciting. Here's some screens:   #3   Today, 10:33 AM Senior Member iPhone 4S, iOS 5.x Join Date: Jan 2012 Posts: 157 This looks really good to me, too. And I have a 4S so I can play it. I just Read More
When I think about possible themes for tower defense games, a tale about space pirates attacking a futuristic Earth in search of highly sought after ‘Spice’ is probably the last thing I’d think of. Yet, that’s exactly the premise of Spice Invaders [Free], a new freemium title from Chillingo. While the game itself is a nice take on tower defense, the bulk of the conversation unfortunately turns to its freemium elements which distract greatly from the actual game. As a tower defense game, Spice Invaders plays similarly to Fieldrunners [$2.99 / HD]. Players are charged with defending one (or more) bases in open-field maps. Enemies come in waves from a variety of different entrances, forcing you to build towers in such a way as to prevent them from taking out your base. Since the maps are open (with some featuring random barriers littered throughout the map), you can do this by Read More
There is no way to beat around the bush, so let's just get this out of the way from the start: Com2uS trademarking "tower defense," for Tower Defense: Lost Earth [$2.99 / HD] is a little bonkers, like if Call of Duty was granted a trademark and changed its name to First Person Shooter. Not only does it peeve off a bunch of developers caught in the legal crossfire, it also gives players incredibly lofty expectations for the final product when it's branded as the "officially trademarked" game of tower defense. Thankfully, it delivers, albeit through a kitchen sink approach more than an innovative one. This is in fact a tower defense game and you'll get every single tower defense trope you've ever run into. The core campaign takes the preset route approach, where you'll set up your units on a grid and the enemies will take a predestined path. There are, however, seven Read More
Pardon the messiness with this one. Earlier, Subatomic Games sent us word that it pushed a new update for both versions of Fieldrunners [$2.99 / HD] to Apple. We're still not sure what's in the iPhone / iPod update, but we do know the contents of the iPad update, which is live and has been, apparently, for more than 24 hours. So what's in it? As the headline so boldly states, new maps, new towers, and a new same-screen multiplayer component have been added. Specifically, the update adds a total of five maps, three of which are single-player only. The other two maps (which are takes on the added maps) support versus and cooperative, same-screen multiplayer. Each of the single-player maps adds a new tower to the mix. Subatomic shot us a list of all of these: Plasma Tower -- creates combo attacks when used with other plasma towers! Shotgun Tower -- fires Read More
By Georgia, Thursday, Dec 16, 2010 | Fieldrunners is still my favorite tower defense-style game for the iPad and they’ve finally (can I say finally again?) put out an update, including an awesome multiplayer mode. Yes, you can now obliterate your editors. I mean friends! Check out our original review video after the break and if you get the update let me know how you like it! Read More

Fieldrunners for iPad – app review

By Georgia, Friday, May 14, 2010 | Fieldrunners for the iPad, from Subatomic Studios, LLC, is a tower defense-style game, where the object is to obliterate the fieldrunners before they get to your base. To do this you place weapons on the field so that they will take out all fieldrunners before they get to the other side. You start the game with 20 lives, which translates into 20 enemies that may pass through your defenses before the game ends. The placement of your defences is in real time, though after each level you do get a small amount of time before the fieldrunners start their attack. Strategy is paramount, as the towers you set up early in the game are still in play for later levels. You do not want to have to sell and move around towers as this will use up valuable resources (arms sales are not as Read More

The release of the iPad is finally upon us. Some of you were sitting at home, sipping your morning cup ‘o joe when your friendly FedEx man came by to drop off your iPad, while others sat outside of your local Apple Store on a milk crate for a week straight eating nothing but Doritos and Mountain Dew. Regardless of how you obtained your iPad, the important thing is that you have it. I posted an article on Friday showcasing games that were readily available for purchase on the App Store. The list covered a lot of great games from equally great publishers, but it lacked something important: My own personal picks! That’s right, this here article is a way for me to share with you what games I’ve played and recommend to new iPad owners. So without further ado, let’s get down to business. It looks like we’re officially at the home stretch for tomorrow’s release of the Apple iPad as we’re now within 24 hours of its release.  If you’ve taken the plunge and are counting down the hours until its release, this may very well be the longest couple of hours you’ve ever felt in your life.  But hold on.  Have you even thought about what apps you plan on downloading for your new bundle of joy?  More importantly, what GAMES will you be wasting countless hours on your couch playing? Apple flipped the switch yesterday to allow iPad apps to be visible on iTunes.  The thing is, there are already a ton of games available for the iPad, and it hasn’t even launched!  That’s where your ole Uncle Danny comes in.  I’ve taken the liberty of scouring the App Store for any and every iPad game you should have your eyes set Read More
Some Early iPad Games that Have Our Attention
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 06:49:55 UTC +00:00
Today the iPad App Store opened up, revealing a great many iPad launch titles to those itching to see what they'll be loading onto their iPads when they arrive on Saturday. The amount of iPad app news this has generated today has us feeling as if we're standing in the middle of a tornado, admittedly. And so, without a great deal of rhyme or reason, I've chosen a few iPad games, now in the App Store, to highlight, the only real criterion being that they're titles we've not recently covered and are ones that I'm personally anxious to get my hands on. So, without further ado... The iPad adaptation of Minigore sounds better than ever with 14 playable characters, "guest stars" from Hook Champ, Zombieville USA, Sway, and Envrio-Bear 2010, and redone graphics to take full advantage of the iPad's screen acreage. Freeverse's real-time strategy title is here for the iPad, Read More

Same as iPhone version - way overpriced!
FloydFett 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Guys, charging $8 for a hires version of same old iPhone game most of us already bought is shameful. Until you add larger maps that take advantage of the iPad space, and your other promised updates, lower the price to at least the price of the iPhone version.
No Difference!
BeyonderHill 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The game is exactly the same. No extra locations to place towers. No extra anything. Not worth the money.
Big screen fun
I make video games 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Not sure I can go back to a small screen now... Plays identical to iPhone game, still great on the bigger iPad screen.
Bigger and better!
OiCu8one2 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Just like the original but with juiced up graphics and smoother gameplay! Would have been nice to not buy this game again since I already have the iPhone version..... But it seems like it's worth it
iPhone app on the iPad
AppRoxorz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Ok, so I own version of Fieldrunners, and now I've player Fieldrunners on the iPad. -First of all, the graphics are really amazing in the large tablet... something you will only know when you play. -There's a soundtrack now for each map, and they're pretty catchy... nice to know I can still use my music though -The game itself has all the maps that come with Fieldrunners on the iPhone, in addition to the downloadable maps... -That "coming soon" screenshot looks pretty awesome, can't wait for anything Subatomic has in store for me. -Achievements work, having tons of fun and can't wait for what's new!!! Summary: All in all, it's a pretty solid iPad release, and gauging by the things I've seen from Subatomic I can only expect something pretty cool down the line. Can't wait, and release it soon!!!
Exactly what you would expect
Kevv Dogg 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Not many differences between this and the iPhone version, but it looks and plays great. If you enjoyed the original, you should enjoy this too!

CharlesWearsPrada! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
wow I totally bought this and don't have an ipad to play it on >.>
Soo sick
Soulrider911 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is about the only game I play on my iPhone...so I absolutely had to buy it on the iPad. I love it the colors, graphics and gameplay is soooo much better...amazing! This is by far my favorite game, I know it is a little more expensive on the iPad, but you are getting the two extra mapped You perviously had to pay a $1.00 each for in the iPhone, totally with it GET IT YOU WILL LOVE IT
What a shame!
eggspig 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Charge 8 dollars for nothing new!
Amazingly fun
Bzytan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This game is so much more fun than I expected it to be. So far I've only played the first 'map' and there is so much more to play. Definitely hours of fun in this game. Using a touchscreen for a TD really makes the game play a lot smoother. Get it while it's still cheap-ish.
Lacks orientation
Buechler66 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Still my favorite game, but lacks both top and bottom landscape orientation. Which means it's not compatible with the official Apple iPad case when the case is opened to the landscape position. The game needs to to flip it's landscape orientation for in both directions (top and bottom). This is a big disappointment. Otherwise a fantastic game on the big iPad screen.
Great application
M4life786 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Amazing application and looks great on the iPad.
Love it! Can't wait to see what Subatomic has in store!
iconoclast2400 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Woot! Game looks GREAT!
So worth it...!
arobulack 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Fieldrunners is the single best iPhone game, and the improved graphics, new animations (love those butterflies!), new tunes, and BIG picture make it even better on the iPad, despite the fact it's basically the same game. The $8 price is absolutely worth it, without a doubt. Really. Buy this game and enjoy.
THIS GAME STINKS
Feelix55 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Just kidding, its AWESOME!!!!!! Works really great on the iPad, even better than the original (if thats possible)! Whether or not u like TD games, you'll like this game!
Great
world Traveler 08 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app looks much better on the iPad well worth the money
Dig the upgrade!
Grinder10991 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I love the new upgraded look- but wish I could play my own music while playing.
Tower Defense at it's Best!
Yong Lee 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Same game as the iPhone version, but definitely better with the bigger screen. Although it's lost it's pick up and play qualities. Playing the iPhone version is quick and easy, whether you're on the go or relaxing. With the iPad version, you truly have to make a commitment to play and that commitment is sometimes difficult to make. If you're like me, you're surrounded with technology wherever you go, living room, kitchen, bedroom and especially office... so because of the multiple options to occupy my time. I say that the original Fieldrunners for the iPhone is better than the iPad version, for the mere fact that I would play it more on the iPhone vs. the iPad.
Waiting
Dmerker 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Awesome game, but as with everyone saying, it's exactly the same as the iPod version... The promised updates don't seem to be coming nearly as fast as seen promised... Will modify review if we ever see the promised updates...
Graphics are amazing! Very detailed
tinetwork 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is the game I was looking forward to playing on the iPad. It's worth every penny. I don't care that I had to pay for it again. I would pay again if they ever released it for the mac. A must have!
Fun
Naladar 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a fun game to waste some time with. I think it was worth the money.
The Definition of Tower Defense games

This game is Very good, if you like tower defense games at all you will be very happy playing this game for many hours.
Strategic game of chess meets Tetris perfected
Big Andie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I was an iPhone Fieldrunners ADDICT, but held off getting the iPad app due to negative "sameness" reviews...than I gave in and decided to H*ll with it! This iPad app is everything and more that the iPod version was! To the folks that say it is the same app, I say: - what about the stunning HD graphics? - how about the beautiful explosions? - what about the BUTTERFLIES - how about no longer needing to zoom in and out? - how about two new levels? I'm glad I decided to form my own opinion!
Great iPad game!
ScottieDGreat 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Very happy with the graphics and challenging new boards!
i have to agree with the "same ol same" comments.
sashicon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
(update, tho i still want to give it three stars for being the same exact version as on the iphone and pspgo -the grfx. after playing i cant help but give it the five, i cant rate a game lower based on the fact that it is the same version, if that version is great, also i see the devs said that really cool stuff will be coming soon and alot of it for free! not to add the devs realized that the ratio of the boarders on the screen of the iphone are exactly the same on the ipad, so they didnt try to make any "innovative" controls, case some of you did not know, alot of the games, specificly games that use duel stick controls, that you may have been having problems with, is not due to the size of the ipad, try playing any of your old iphone games on the ipad, specificly ones like, idracula, circut strike one, drop ship, and most important CODwow, they all play flawless, even better than any controls you may have ever used, including your consoles, the problem is that devs thought they were being smart by creating new controls for a device that they only had specs of, so hopefully alot of them find this out soon and revert the controls to their original position - the icons for switching weapons and such. ps if the devs of circut strike one make a HD version, it will be one of the coolest games ever, this thing totally changes games from night to day. for what was the flagship when it came to TD's on the iphone, to launch on the ipad with absolutly no new content, oh butterflies float around randomly, making it even less hard core, is a real shame, its sad that devs like subatomic create someting really great, make tons of cash then call it a night, as if they were a "brand" c'mon guys, dont be so full of your selves, your game was good two years ago or whatever it was, but not that good, not even more enemies and towers on the field at a time for a more epic battle experiance, everything is exactly the same, if you have a ipad just upscale your iphone version, now that i think about it no dev has takin the advantage of mass battle rts, td games yet. i just played modernwarfareHD and that game is super buggy, tho it looks crisp, the iphone version upscaled runs and handles way better, so far the only rehased HD game i have purchased and is worth it, is real racing, that game is worth the ipad alone, but even cod wowzombies for iphone runs faster and controls better on the ipad than the HD version... i know right, if your looking for a similar but fresh td try blighted earth, the menu interface is horrid, you cant play your own music, you cant pan and zoom, you cant even FF, but its far more challenging than FR, and its only 99c, Way to sell out sub, same game on the pspgo too, by the way those tower placements in the screens dont even make sense, good job a h, get warp gate for the same price, 7 wonders is pretty cool, totally dif game tho.
