It’s a big week on the App Store for Square Enix. Following the release of what looks to be a fairly hobbled port of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lion [$15.99], the publisher has cut the cost of a tremendous amount of its existing library on the digital storefront. For a limited time, you can grab some pretty hot games for up to 50 percent off from its fairly “up there” price points. Sadly, my personal favorite Square Enix App Store title, Final Fantasy III, isn’t one of games targeted in this deal. If I had to pick a runner-up that was included in this listing, I’d grab the original Fantasy Fantasy at its lowered price point, though only because of the nostalgia factor. It’s a great game and all, but it’s also pretty long in the tooth. Anyway, happy shopping and I hope you’re able to afford any of Read More
Final Fantasy III hits the App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Mar 2011 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
As promised, Square Enix released its version of Final Fantasy III for the iPhone and iPod touch. The role-playing game follows the journey of four orphaned youths chosen by the crystal of light to restore balance to the world after the land is robbed of light. This version is a remake of the Japanese Final Fantasy III that debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2006. It has been optimized for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch and includes Retina Display support, iPhone-specific touch panel controls and new 3D visuals and story sequences for the iOS platform. Final Fantasy III is now available on the App Store for US$15.99. For fans of the series, the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are on sale on the App Store for $3.99 each until March 31. Final Fantasy III Confirmed for iOS Next Month
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Feb 2011 17:09:29 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/21/2011 at 9:09am | by Andrew Groen Yesterday, some rumors began to circulate that Final Fantasy III would soon be getting an iPhone port. However, that's where the news stopped. Two problems arose: A) the news was based off of a scan of a Japanese magazine that nobody could read to confirm the news, and B) nobody knew whether the game (if it existed at all) was coming to territories outside of Japan. Today Square Enix offered an official word on the matter, and we can all rejoice in the knowledge that one of the lost Final Fantasy games will find its way to North America on the iPhone. Square Enix's downloadable games division tweeted the news today, confirming the suspicions. The company twitter account stated enthusiastically, "FINAL FANTASY III coming next month!!!!!" It also offered a URL which leads only to a basic webpage with a Final Fantasy III Read More
Square Enix Confirms 'Final Fantasy III' Release
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Feb 2011 14:25:54 UTC +00:00
It was only yesterday that we were discussing the possibility of Square Enix bringing Final Fantasy III to the App Store. I had a blast with both Final Fantasy [$8.99] and Final Fantasy II [$8.99], so this was incredibly exciting news for me. Video game announcements like this can sometimes seem to move at a glacial pace between when they're rumored or leaked and when they're finally confirmed. Needless to say, I was very surprised to wake up to the following tweet today by Square Enix: Unfortunately, this is where all the confirmed details we have about this particular game end. Following the link from the tweet just takes you to a basic splash page with the Final Fantasy theme. I wish we had some more to go off here, but I suppose I'm happy we've at least got a confirmation, especially so quickly. I can't wait to spend hours upon Read More
According to a post in our forums, Japanese blog Esuteru (はちま起稿) has obtained a scanned image from V-Jump magazine which claims that Square Enix is readying a port of Final Fantasy III for iOS in addition to their already announced Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions port which is due sometime this Spring. This is exciting news to say the least, but unfortunately I don't read Japanese and therefore am left with quite a few questions. First of all, the announcement of Final Fantasy III refers to a Japanese release, so even if it is officially in the works there's no guarantee that it will also come to the US. Given the success Square Enix has seen with their iOS Final Fantasy games stateside, I'd imagine that it will, but it would be nice to know for sure. Also, it isn't clear which version of Final Fantasy III would Read More

2010: A Year of Excellent Ports to iOS
Calendar16 Fri, 31 Dec 2010 07:30:55 UTC +00:00
Gaming has grown exponentially over the course of the last 2+ years since the introduction of the App Store. Apple's iOS devices, with their touch screens and accelerometer/gyroscope capabilities, have given developers the opportunity to deliver gaming experiences that are unlike anything available on other platforms. And while there have been an incredible amount of unique games released for these devices, the popularity of the platform also brings a strong desire to see previously successful games ported over from other areas of gaming. Here is a selection of ports from 2010 that have found a new home on the App Store, and in many instances have even proved to be superior to their originals. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, $9.99 - [Lite / iPad] - [Review] - [Forum Thread] - It's GTA in your pocket, 'nuff said. One of the great things about the App Store is the many retro titles that have either been ported or remade for iOS devices. In terms of role-playing games, they don't get much more classic than Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II from Square Enix. These two titles were remade for the PSP a few years back with improved graphics and tweaked gameplay, and earlier this year those enhanced versions made their way to the App Store. Both games made the transition to the touch screen rather well, and offered a great old-school RPG experience for gamers on the go. Just a few hours ago, both Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II were updated to include Chinese and French language support. To celebrate these updates, Square Enix has dropped the price of each title from $8.99 to $3.99 for one week only. Admittedly it's kind of a weird thing to celebrate Read More

Posted 06/17/2010 at 12:07pm | by Florence Ion With this week's E3 news about Nintendo's new offerings--like the 3DS and the rejuvenation of a plethora of popular titles from the Nintendo 64--iPhone and iPod touch users might be asking themselves if it's time to go back to console gaming. And while most mobile iDevice users probably have an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 collecting dust somewhere in the house, it's not guaranteed that all of them have had a chance to play with the Nintendo DS. With the knowledge that Nintendo may never bring their popular Mario and Zelda titles to the App Store, we scoped out 13 Nintendo DS games that have equal or better equivalents in the App Store to squelch some of your handheld envy. Plus, games sold in the App Store are so much more affordable. Read on for a list of wonderful game titles that will Read More

Square Enix Running Two-Week Sale on All Games
Calendar16 Tue, 20 Apr 2010 17:19:59 UTC +00:00
Yesterday we posted our close look at the excellent RPG Chaos Rings [App Store], an iPhone exclusive and the latest from Square Enix. In celebration of the release of this new title, the studio today began a two week sale on all of their games. Shelly Data Doodles is pleased to announce the App Store Availability for both versions of our first iOS game - Puffer's Train Challenge! and Puffer's Train Challenge Lite! Square Enix’s highly anticipated iPhone/iPod touch exclusive RPG, Chaos Rings, is now available in the App Store, but you will have to fork over a princely sum in order to play it. The game features four teams of two, each containing their own storyline.  As part of a two-person team, you will compete for victory and eternal life by battling foes turn-based style.  Your characters will gain levels and experience points by defeating enemies to upgrade your team’s skills, allowing you to unleash more devestating attacks.  Defeating enemies also allows you to obtain DNA information called “gene,” which you can equip your character with to learn that specific enemy’s magic and special attack moves. The two-person turn-based gameplay allows you to choose between solo and paired moves.  Solo moves aren’t nearly as powerful as paired moves, but they allow you to defend yourself as opposed to the paired moves, which are Read More
If you recall, last month Square-Enix posted a job listing to work on a new IP exclusively for the iPhone called Chaos Rings.  It was planned to be released sometime this year, but it looks like the (short) wait is finally over as Chaos Rings has finally made it into the App Store. Unlike previous iPhone titles released by Square-Enix, this is the first title with full 3D visuals which will certainly push your iPhone’s hardware to its limits. What makes this title stand out is not only is it an iPhone exclusive RPG game from a well known publisher, but the team behind Chaos Rings worked on both the Wild Arms & Final Fantasy series. Chaos Rings also uses a “classic game system any RPG fan will enjoy”.  If all that doesn’t sell you, then here’s a synopsis of the game’s story: The story revolves around a tournament where combatants Read More
What Would You Pay For An App?
Calendar16 Sat, 20 Mar 2010 15:00:41 UTC +00:00
I will admit, I’m a free app lover. A real cheapo when it comes to my apps. I currently have a 5 row springboard with 4 pages of apps and a ton hidden with “Poof!”, and most are free. I have just found that most of the things I want apps for have one available for free. Or a lite version. However, I am an admitted (and proud) oldskool video game junkie. So… when Square Enix recently released two Final Fantasy games for the iPhone I was in. I didn’t know what they would cost but I didn’t really care. I bought into the hype gladly. When the apps were released (finally!) I hopped into the App Store that day to buy them. $9 bucks! Wow! Up until then my most expensive app was probably $1.99. And I saw that was for EACH game, not both. I went ahead and plunked Read More
It’s been nearly a month since Square-Enix released Final Fantasy I & Final Fantasy II on the iPhone, but it seems like they’re already planning on releasing another RPG on the platform some time this year.  According to a job posting on Japanese developer Media.Vision’s website, the game is called Chaos Rings and will be a 3D title whose story revolves around five pairs of warriors from around the world who are fighting to the death for the chance at eternal youth. Chaos Rings will be carried out across five scenarios that will become available as the player proceeds.  Each scenario will take players across several worlds, where at the center will be a final boss.  The combat system will also involve some risk depending on how players decide to take on their enemies. It’s good to see Square-Enix isn’t going to stick to releasing updated versions of their older titles on the iPhone and is Read More

This sequel adds some updated graphics, and gameplay, just to name a few. But is the game worth purchasing? Presentation Part two of Final Fantasy has stepped up its game. If you remember playing it way back when, you should know that the story is more in depth, capturing the true essence behind this series. Not only that, but there’s more map to explore and gameplay requires more thinking and strategy. Controls The controls are the same as Final Fantasy I, as they are touch based and everything is where you would think is. At the lower left is the virtual D pad, and lower right contains the dash button as your moving. When your stationary, the menu pops up Read More

Forget these fancy pants new kids on the block like Popcaps and their mind-blowingly huge Plants vs Zombies title — if you’re a real gamer, you’ll be spending your cash on Final Fantasy I and II for $8.99 a pop. That’s what most of the sites are saying, anyway. I would actually much rather play Angry Birds, Plants vs Zombies, or the newly released Tilt to Live than relive a Japenese RPG experience dating back to 1987. I guess I just don’t like grinding (in the non-sexy dancing way) against monsters for hours upon hours on end and rotating between “attack” and my various basic elemental spells. I’ll stop there, though. I don’t want to grinch up everyone else’s childhood/youth gaming experiences, so I’ll just end this post with some handy iTunes links: Read More
Today is a marvelous day for iPhone RPG fans.  Square Enix just released not one but two Final Fantasy games for the iPhone and iPod touch, and the company is celebrating this achievement by cutting the prices of their other iPhone games for limited time. Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II were originally released for the NES in Japan back in 1987 and 1988.  The two respected titles have made their way to the iPhone and iPod touch mostly in their original form, except they now feature touch controls and additional dungeons that weren’t available in the original releases. Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are available in the App Store for $8.99 each.  We will hopefully soon be able to provide you with in-depth reviews to help with your purchasing decisions. In the meantime, check out Square Enix’s five other iPhone games that are now on sale until March 3rd. Read More

by Both and [iTunes links] — two games from one of the most revered console game franchises of all time — are available for purchase in the Apple App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch right now. We knew they were coming a while ago, but we didn’t know the pricing. Each game costs $8.99 and features upgraded graphics similar to those found on the Sony PSP versions released a couple years ago. Both titles debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in the late 1980s. Note that the App Store received the Japanese version of Final Fantasy II, not the American one. Japan’s Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the United States for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, but this is the original Final Fantasy II that wasn’t released in the States until much later — confusing, we know. If you’re not familiar with the Final Read More
Today, you can relive the heady days of the late 1980′s, but in 1990′s style: Square Enix have released both FINAL FANTASY I & II today at the App Store. Both are masked in glorious Super Famicom-style colour and iPhone-tailored resolution. FINAL FANTASY sports ‘bonus dungeons’ from Soul of Chaos and the Labyrinth of Time editions of the game while FINAL FANTASY II hacks along with the bonus dungeons from Soul of Rebirth and the Arcane Labyrinth editions of the game. Of course, this will probably be the biggest news for Anime RPG lovers till the next Final Fantasy debuts on the iPhone. Feel free to discuss the release of FINAL FANTASY I & II in our forums! February 25th, 2010 James Isabel Did you see what I just did there? After some days of anticipation, SQUARE ENIX‘s classic RPG that set the bar for this successful franchise (and possibly all RPG’s): and have arrived for the iPhone: Players guide the Warriors of Light as they set out on a quest to restore the crystals to their former luster. Its side view battles, choice and promotion of character classes, and sprawling world explored with fantastic vehicles quickly became standards of the series. If you’re a classic RPG fan, chances are you should’ve instantly bought these already. If you haven’t you’re not a RPG fan obviously. We’re still playing through the game to inspect if anything changed other than the controls (touch implementation) which are awesome by the way. We’ll offer you a full review of both games soon enough, but as we said, the game’s looking pretty faithful so Read More

Premiering way back in 1987, Final Fantasy introduced an RPG franchise which has gone on to spawn twelve sequels, won seemingly as many awards as fans and even been featured in the Guinness Book of Records!  Square Enix have now adapted the original and its sequel for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Fans will have to buy each game individually and stump up a relatively hefty $8.99/£5.49 each to do so, but at least Final Fantasy will include the bonus dungeons from Soul of Chaos and Labyrinth of Time, and Final Fantasy II will feature the Soul of Rebirth and Arcane Labyrinth’s extra dungeon fun too. This massively popular game is likely to be a huge hit, both with nostalgic old hands and with players introduced to Final Fantasy by the more recent games, as it’s a great opportunity for them to discover the series’ roots. Here is Square’s trailer: With Read More
Final Fantasy I and II reviews

Published: February 25, 2010 Comment         I hate random battle encounters, and now I have two games on my iPhone that introduced the phenomenon to a wider audience.  Final Fantasy released back in 1987 for the NES is one of the forefathers of iPhone hits such as Zenonia. Final Fantasy is one of those classics that need to be experienced in some shape or form during a lifetime. So how well do the first two instalments in the Final Fantasy saga fare on the iPhone/iPod Touch? My party of the four original TouchGen members. The interface and controls are all touch based. A virtual four directional joypad is located to the left on the screen. When moving in a town or cave using the directional button a run button shows up at the lower right. Combat is turn-based, and you have to select an action for each of the members Read More

Controls need some work
VeganTnT 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is really a list of bullet points to this specific version of Final Fantasy II rather than a review (which you can find anywhere) --- Controls take some getting used to and need some tweaking. There is always a dpad present on the screen and you can't change it's size or opacity. When moving in a town or dungeon a button appears onscreen in the bottom right. Tap and hold while moving to run. However, if you have it pressed and STOP moving... Then you must release the button, move with the dpad, then start running. Otherwise you won't move at all. --- When standing still the stats appear in bottom right. Tapping it will take you to the menu Once you get Scott's Ring you can tap and hold on the stats to get to the world map. ( the game makes NO mention of this, I just remember it from the original) --- Tapping anywhere onscreen advances conversations... However conversations that involve input (ie Yes or No) can cause some frustration. The input box is tied to the last text box so while tapping to advance the conversation you can accidentally make a selection. Very Annoying. --- There is no option to flip the screen for us iPhone users You can exit at any time and return to resume that quicksave data The Bestiary that you got after beating the game on PSP is now available from the beginning (found in the Configuration screen) I have NOT been able to get the hidden card game during the snowmobile section to work so I'm not sure it's still there
