The , a major business newspaper, has decided to drop its iOS app in favor of an HTML5 based web app specifically designed for the iPhone and iPad. The move is in response to Apple's new App Store Subscription requirements that state Apple must get a 30% cut of any subscription sold on iTunes and that publications must offer subscriptions through the App Store. In a email to subscribers today, the FT didn't mention the App Store at all, instead touting "valuable improvements" including claims that the web app will be faster and more up-to-date. The interesting part came when the email mentioned the existing app (emphasis added): Although the old app may still be available for an interim period, we encourage you to switch to the new app as soon as possible. The new app is now the focus of our development efforts and we'll be adding a series of Read More
Financial Times launches HTML5 web app
Calendar16 Tue, 07 Jun 2011 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
The Financial Times is turning towards HTML5 for its upcoming application (technically, a web app), in contrast to its older native iOS app. FT was not happy with the new subscription model offered by Apple, and was working with Apple to keep the revenue and demographic information from its 590,000 website subscribers. These negotiations must have been rocky as the Financial Times is now releasing a web-based application instead of a platform-specific application. The UK-based business newspaper is looking to HTML5 to deliver its content to multiple platforms using a single app instead of multiple apps. Mobile chief Steve Pinches points to the convenience of developing one application using a single development environment. Though it may be easier to deploy and make changes, the Financial Times faces the challenge of teaching people how to set up a homescreen shortcut to the app and how to use an app that runs in Read More
The Digital Newspaper: Hands-On with 4 Top iPad Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 13 Oct 2010 14:07:42 UTC +00:00
Consumers have more digital options for reading the news than ever before. From pithy, one-line updates on Twitter, to RSS feed readers with customizable content, to dedicated apps from newspapers on mobile devices — choices are endless. But it’s the on-the-go mobile apps we are interested in here, with a hands-on look at four popular apps for the iPad platform, from traditional newspaper companies offering both free content and that which lives behind the paywall. When it launched, the iPad was hyped as the lifeline for a dying industry. But do newspapers work well enough on the iPad to be the savior so many hope it will be? Check out the reviews below for a look at iPad apps from The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Financial Times and The New York Times and let us know your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Monday, June 14, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to this week’s first edition of iPhone + iPad Gems. Today, we’re looking at an interesting and relatively well-rated collection of iPad applications that are all either based upon earlier iPhone apps or arriving in forms that are both iPad- and iPhone-compatible. They range in purpose from news readers and remote computer access software to Twitter and educational tools. The top-rated apps this week are iTeleport, Osfoora HD, and Reeder for iPad. Read on for all the details. iTeleport for iPhone/iPad Though the backstory is a little confusing, the appeal of iTeleport: Jaadu VNC for iPhone/iPad ($25) from iTeleport LLC is as clear as day: this program turns your iPad into a mirror of your Mac’s or PC’s screen, enabling you to control your computer—assuming that it’s turned on, in Screen Sharing mode, Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Jun 9, 2010 | This year’s WWDC 2010 Apple Design Awards were a decidedly iPhone and iPad-centric affair, yet the winners still manage to run an amazing gamut from fun to foodie, creative to informative. Without further ado, here are the ADA. Congratulations to all the winners, all the nominees, and all the developers and apps that were submitted. Now what do you think, any surprises? Read More

Apple Design Awards go to popular iPhone and iPad apps
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Jun 2010 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
Jun 9th 2010 at 7:00AM Was there a reason Apple didn't really give any "Face Time" to Mac apps this WWDC. I feel a little sad that Mac seemed to get snubbed. I would run out right now and buy an iPad if the TabToolkit allowed you to enter Notation/Tab rather then just being a viewer/playback app. Still a great app though. Mike, maybe you could recommend some of these awesome really out-of-the-way apps that we don't know about? I try every day, my friend. Fair enough Where is the award for Angry Birds? "Apple definitely didn't dig too deep to find really out-of-the-way titles." Developers submit their own apps to Apple. 20 Minute Meals was the best selling paid app in the UK for quite a while last year, and still is in the top 20 or so. It's a good app, which I've used a few times. The meals Read More
Murdoch reveals News Corp iPad app sales numbers at D8
Calendar16 Fri, 04 Jun 2010 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
Steve Jobs wasn't the only CEO on stage at the D8 conference this week -- Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp, also took the stage this week, and shared some sales figures for his company's iPad news apps. The Financial Times' app is the biggest winner, with 130,000 downloads, although that number is probably so high because the app itself is free. The Guardian Photography app (not part of News Corp, but still a print publication), also free with a sponsorship, has 90,000 downloads, and the Wall Street Journal app (free to subscribers) has 10,000 downloads. Internationally, the numbers are a little lower, though the iPad only went on sale overseas last week. The Times iPad edition has only sold 5,000 copies, and The Australian's app has sold 4,500. Murdoch is just as optimistic about Steve Jobs, though, in believing that where there are iPads, people will want material to read Read More

This is why I subscribe to FT
Jkq 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good pricing policy allowing for use of iPad or web site. No nonsense content. Beautiful app.
Now, this is a news app
Turkeymonkey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazing! This is the first news (and newspaper) app to truly embrace the form factor of the iPad. Very well laid out, very skimable, very much like reading an enhanced version of the paper. I'm not an FT reader, but I found myself liking this so. Much and readings many stories that when the free trial expires in July, I may just be willing to pay for this. NY Times, WSJ, are you taking notes?
Beautiful
DNash16 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The FT and WSJ are really on top of their games with their apps. The FT seems a little faster.
Took a while, but worth the while
schmiddi 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Better than using the web site since it fully works offline. The pink background makes it really easy to read. And it has the great FT content ... The best finance, business and economic news out there in my view. To the point without a hidden agenda. Noe i can happily delete the WSJ app.
Excellent first step

I'm glad to see more and more newspapers coming up with iPad apps. This is a very good product and appears to have the whole newspaper available for subscribers. I currently subscribe to the online edition and this is much better to read than the website. This is the kind of product that makes me want to pay for content. But it's missing some things (or I can't find them): - Ability to save and email articles. - Include the rest of the website offerings such as the blogs ( I depend on Alphaville!) and the Longroom. - Several days worth of newspapers, like the WSj has, so I can go back to what was written a few days ago, and it will also give me more time to read the paper in full. - Also, when dealing with articles longer than two screens the movement between screens is not intuitive. In the WSJ app each swipe moves automatically to the next page or screen. But in this app the text is like one whole piece, so you can easily overshoot or undershoot.
Finally

Waited a log time for this. Better than I imagined
Best media app I have yet seen
tijaha 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the way that other newspapers and magazines should create an iPad app. I was not that familiar with FT but am very likely to subscribe after the introductory period ends. It is a breeze to navigate the different sections and the videos are well made and very intelligent.
Best iPad News App I've Seen So Far
dclawyer 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is stunningly beautiful. You see the whole paper (not like the NYTimes). It is easy to navigate. You can view the paper online or download as you prefer. Unlike the WSJ it downloads quickly. I wish there were a way to email articles to friends and to post to Twitter. Also I would like to be able to adjust the font. But honestly as it is there is nothing I have seen that is better :).
I'll pay for this content
DennisM99 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wall Street Journal take note. This is how you do an iPad app. Hopefully the pricing after the trial won't insult our intelligence like WSJ does. There is little advertising in tins app. But when iAd comes out I'm sure they will ad adverts but if it keeps the cost down and the ads are informative and entertaining all the better. Well done!
Very Good!
arunkkk 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This App is worth the subscription.
Great News App
E-Bones 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very good news application for the iPad. Well thought out, easy to use and provides great content. Truly uses takes advantage of the ipad to provide a great news experience. The free trial is a great idea to allow people to really experience the whole app before deciding to buy. Great job FT, I hope to see more apps like it!
My life has changed...
Oudiveboy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
due to FT and WSJ on the iPad. Both have great content and are well designed with the app feature design a little better on the WSJ but the content more impressive on the FT app. I've already subscribed to the WSJ and I'm pretty sure I will do the same with FT assuming they take heed of some of the design cues from WSJ. Cheers!!
Awesome!
SiriusVector 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app. Enjoy reading it. I would love to see an option to mail link to the news.
Great app

I'm already a subscriber and love the IPad format.
Now this is how a business newspaper should be
Pidge72 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
At last. Great content, great great interface, and great layout. The option to read online or download offline is a nice touch (take note WSJ). Navigation is very intuitive. Thankyou FT!
Wow!
Tim49304 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is by far the most elegant Newspaper App so. Thank you very much Financial Times and especially Hublot to be so kind and bring us this amazing app! I just signed up for a monthly subscription :)
Extremely well done.
Cherryman3487 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
After the iPad came out and I tried the ny times and the wsj, I was a little disappointed. They just didn't fulfill my expectations of what the iPad could do for reading newspapers. Well the FT took their time and learned from their competitor's mistakes, and have fully delivered an application that lives up to the expectations of an ipad owner. I will cancel my subscription to the wsj and convert to ft, especially considering that the subscription includes access to the website. The FT app will serve as a benchmark and template to future iterations of iPad newspaper apps.
Amazing
blake_freeman 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wonderful stories, smart layout and free content, bravo.
It's readable
SentFromMyiPad 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
One of very few apps makes the 'reading' experience pleasant.
Wow
Pearl St. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow this is the most impressive app I have ever seen. There is not a singe flaw. Who ever built this should get a serious raise!!! I cannot put down my ipad, all the information I need is now at my finger tips, within one application. Bravo!
Well designed
kaput_ink 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
But lacks options to increase font size for reading articles.
Nearly Perfect - Room For Improvement
LiamNYC1 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
As expected, the FT has brought timeless elegance and quality editorial sense to news on the iPad. This app will likely allow me to convert my paper subscription to the iPad. With that said, the issues laid out below should be addressed in short order to bring the app to it's full five star potential: 1) Please provide an option to store multiple daily editions of the FT - like the WSJ iPad app. Though I'd love to read the entire FT everyday, I often keep sections or entire papers from days past to read when I have time. Surely, this is one of only three features that the WSJ iPad app has over your app. They lack your editorial vision and crisp writing. 2) To fully enjoy the FT content on the iPad, please provide the same images that are in the paper edition. The WSJ iPad app has you beat, though quality images don't equate to excellent penmanship. 3) The final feature of the WSJ iPad app that should be incorporated in your app is the ability to save individual articles and sections. Syncing those saved articles to your iPhone would be a great addition as well. 4) It it my hope that you plan on adding a section for the additional sections (ie FTFM, individual sections on doing business in specific countries, special magazines on rugby, football, and business schools - and most importantly How To Spend It). All of these features would allay any concern I have for fully converting my subscription from physical paper to iPad. Also, a nudge to your colleagues at The Economist would be appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic but...
FT Weekend Reader 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded this expressly for the weekend edition hoping to be able to replace the paper copy I buy religiously. Where is Lunch With The FT ? Susie Boyt ? Moneypenny ? Book reviews ? Nowhere to be found. I agree with the other reviewers re shortcomings relative to WSJ. Please fix this FT !
Fast, where is sharing?
eddypoon 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fast. still need to wait and see pricing policy after initial trial wears out. Good if paper subscribers get access. No sharing option, not even a link to aritcle on ft.com can be copy/pasted, no article saving.
Good but can improve
Krouze 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
- great first try - not much customization possible, eg font size or different fonts. - I don't get the logic of the page layout with the article extending left to right. Do you want to make the iPad screen feel smaller? - photos are missing from many articles - captions are present. Same problem as with the iPhone version Will revise rating if some of these changes show up in an upgrade.
