Michael E. | Feb 12, 2010 User rating: ( votes, average: out of 5)  Loading ... As surely as fall gives way to winter and winter gives way to spring, spring gives way to standardized tests, whether placement or college entry.  One of the biggest, most important standardized tests of all is the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, with its math, critical reading, and writing sections.  I always felt that if math was a strength for you, the chances were fairly good that you could work your way from problem to a reasonable estimation of the correct solution.  Or at least enough to where the odds of guessing the right answer were significantly higher. The verbal section- as it was known back in my day- was a bit trickier, though.  Especially analogies and vocabulary.  Either you knew the meaning of the word or you didn’t and no amount of staring at it would change that Read More

Apple orders Android mention scrubbed from App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Feb 2010 18:26:00 UTC +00:00
Apparently "Android" is a four-letter word in Cupertino. The flash card app Flash of Genius was a finalist in Google's Android Developer Challenge, and the developers thought that was worth mentioning in the description of the iPhone version of their app. Apple didn't agree, and sent the developers an email asking them to remove the Android line from their app description, under threat of an "interruption" in Flash of Genius' availability on the app store. I like Apple, but does anyone else think this seems a bit like a movie gangster cliché? It's just shy of showing up in a dark pinstripe suit, carrying a baseball bat and saying "It would be a shame if anything happened to your ... availability in the app store." There's no official ban on mentioning Android, as far as we know, so the email said that the description "contains inappropriate or irrelevant information." Apple mentioned Read More

I feel eloquent already!

Been using this for a couple of hours on the subway, on and off. App feels solid, word descriptions are great, even funny sometimes. I like how it adapts based on your feedback - if you don't know some roots, it spoon-feeds them to you until you start getting it. Highly recommended to anybody who is trying to extend their vocabulary!
Best vocabulary app. Period.
J. J. S. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I bought this to help me study for the GRE verbal section. I enjoyed using it so much that it quickly became my rimary study tool (sorry Princeton Review!). I love the way it tracks both the meaning and the root of words you get wrong, increasing your future contact with related words. It also has an amazingly useful section where commonly encountered roots are presented alphabetically with their most frequent word-contexts underneath. This feature alone is worth the buck you pay, easily. If you need to study vocabulary for the SAT or GRE, just get this app!

Milo Beckman 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Without a doubt, this is the application you need to study for the SAT vocab section. It has countless functionalities that the other SAT study apps don't have - roots, comparisons, an algorithm, great sentences, and more. If you're looking for an app that will minimize the amount of time spent studying and maximize your performance on the SAT, "Flash of Genius: SAT Vocab" is the way to go.
great app

This is a top-of-the-line application. It takes the tried-and-true flashcard concept and makes it intelligent.

RDoom 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Despite the fact that I had already taken the SATs multiple times, this application is still helpful.
Best sat vocab app so far! Worth the money!
Bdjcuejfug 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Finally a good app for this! Tons of words with great sample sentences to help you remember what the words mean. Their whole roots thing is very smart and really helps. Clever. DEFINITELY worth the money. I'm surprised it's so cheap actually.

Took the sat years ago, and this app is still great. Perfect for beefing up your writing and comprehension skills generally.
Awesome app. Love grunge mode
Dmvaldman 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Minimalist design and east to use. You can tell the algorithms behind the study guide are optimized to help you remeber words you find difficult. Could benefit from a larger word database though. Grunge mode let's me stay true to my anti-establishment core while still feeding the college board with my parents moneys.
Very happy with this

I was just looking for an app to help me expand my vocabulary and this one seemed the most promising. I was not disappointed :) i am not a person who can just straight memorize things, so being able to relate the words to each other made it so much easier. Great app! :D

Bagelface231 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I already took the SAT but it looked helpful so I got it. It was actually really good. It was a nice, compact, on-the-go way to extend your vocab. I highly recomend it, even if you don't need to take the SAT
Great for a business professional!
lj322 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I work in consulting and sometimes I need a brush-up on vocabulary when moving between projects. It has a clean, intuitive, no-nonsense design. It's most intelligent feature (why it trumps original flash cards) is its ability to feed you cards based on your past answers. Considering the SAT is CAT-based, this is a great concept to grasp. I sure wish I had this around in my day! I am already relearning words I should know for day-to-day business. Try it out - I'm a big supporter of 99 cent apps - you have little to lose and lots to gain!
Extremely Useful for Many Purposes
rlsnyc 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was very impressed with this app. If helps you prepare you SAT vocabulary by giving you words to practice based on your previous results. This is a great feature, it takes a look at each answer you make, and when you get something wrong, it gives you a word that is a little easier, and when you get something right it gives you a word that is a little harder. This is a great feature that "hones in" on your particular skill level. I also think Latin teachers would also like to use it with their students as well, since almost all SAT words are derived from Latin. Like the title screenshot that shows "erroneous" as an SAT word flash card, this will definitely hark back to those Latin lessons. And in general its just a really great way to practice your vocabulary! A great app, and for the price its cheaper than most SAT prep books. Its also lighter, of course, and it is interactive! Highly recommended!
I am smarter already!
