Four killer iPhone apps for runners
Calendar16 Thu, 06 Aug 2009 14:21:00 UTC +00:00
The Get Running app lives up to its name, gradually guiding you from couch to 5K. I used to run without music. Then I started bringing along an MP3 player. And finally I caved in to strapping my iPhone to my arm. Sure, it's a little unwieldy, but it's comforting to have a phone with you just in case you need a sag wagon. And don't forget the apps. Your iPhone can double not only as an iPod, but also a GPS watch, a route map, and a personal trainer. Here's my list of must-have apps for new and seasoned runners alike. OK, race fans: your turn. What apps do you take on the run? And what's your preferred method of carrying your iPhone? Armband case? If so, which one? Hit the comments to talk apps, gear, and, if you want, running in general! Five (really useful) Apps for everyone
Calendar16 Wed, 05 Aug 2009 17:30:00 UTC +00:00
Some apps are almost universal. Chances are you may find a use for one of these apps in your daily goings-on, just as I have. All links are iTunes links. Flicktunes, $0.99 Remember our chat about driving and using your iPhone? Flicktunes makes controlling the iPod in your iPhone (or touch) much easier when you have to focus on other things -- like driving. Flick your finger left or right to navigate your playlist, up or down to start or stop the music. The album art is all you see, plus a speaker icon indicating playback. It's super easy, a simple app, but very useful if you're driving or otherwise occupied while jamming out. Army Knife, $1.99 If you need to measure something in a jiffy, Army Knife is a 9-in-1 tool with several measuring tools. There's a protractor, a caliper and a tape measure, plus a level and a "heart Read More

Great App! A long time in coming...
PlasticChicken 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I don't know why someone hadn't thought of this sooner! With all the rules being enacted by state and local governments regarding cellphone use and texting while driving, this app is a MUST! For a whopping 99 cents you can keep from getting busted for using your device on the road while listening to your tunes (which in my state can equate to a $100.00 ticket for the first offence). Not to mention the cost and ripple effect of running into that person in front of you driving the '77 Lincoln Mark V that *he* believes is worth WAY more than it really is... The reasons are clear - save your driving record, your insurance premiums, and your sanity for a buck!
BRILLIANT!!!! WORKS PERFECTLY - NO MORE CRASHING THE CAR :)
Daisy Jane (DJ) 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I've almost CRASHED HEAD ON into oncoming traffic a few times now trying to switch songs with my iPhone mounted in a windscreen holder! Therefore this app is a MUST HAVE!!! My only feedback would be perhaps the dev could "pretty up" the icon artwork (looks a bit cheap) and fonts are a bit ugly being displayed at the top and so big... Also Im sure Apple wont let the dev code features like a stop or a pause button as its against their rules? But still FlickTunes is a 5 star App. Just run your finger across the screen left or right to change song tracks. Thank you dev for making it :)
EXACTLY what I was looking for!
Techie Teacher 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is the app that Apple should incorporate directly into the core functionality of the iPhone/touch. It works just as described. Just get it -- you are less likely to crash (your car, that is...not your iPhone).
P E R F E C T !!! Five Stars!
jackkenney 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Fantastic app! You can't beat it and it's FREE!
Great App!
NickB916 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
What a great app this is, very simple and easy to use AND solves a serious problem! Gone are the days of breaking your concentration from the road and threatening the safety of yourself and others. Periodicaly for work i have to make 9 hour road trips, and let me tell you, in the last few hundred tiring miles keeping your eyes on the road is a MUST. This app allows you to change songs, pause, resume and more just by making general swiping motions across the screen, no more tapping the home button then searching for the tiny buttons (which then require pinpoint accuracy to actually hit). The stock ipod function may look a little more elegant, but just doesnt lend itself to ease of use if your focus is elsewhere. The app is also very useful when running or other excercise... like if you have your phone in one of the armband straps, the stock controls would be difficult to see and strike, where with Flicktunes you can just get your finger anywhere on the screen. In my opinion no one should be able to rate this app any less than 4 stars for the low price of $0.99, let alone the special free give-away over the holiday weekend!
Love it!!!!
seraph444 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great app for the car. It makes sure I don't crash while I check to see what is playing or change to a new song!
Perfect
EDMD 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Excellent implementation. Easy to read, easy to control while driving. Simply the perfect Car iPod app out there. Thanks
Great on the motorcycle too
919Nick 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app is great on the motorcycle. The touch screen will respond just enough for this app to let me control my music with leather gloves on and through the clear map pocket on my tank bag. Try doing that with the normal controls. This saved me a bunch of money on a remote control.
Exactly what I needed for the car!!!
treck 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I was really frustrated with how small Apple made the text of the Artist, song and album. It was a struggle to read it while driving. This app was just what I was looking for. Well done. I can drive safer, read info easily, and control playback by swiping without looking at the iPod. Also glad to see more controls are already in the works for the next version. Keep up the great work!
A really nice simple interface for itunes
efusco 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
A great way to move through, pause, play and replay your music without fumbling with the tiny buttons built into iTunes. If you listen to music frequently on your iPhone you need this.
Not too bad
Jimothy42 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great for the car. I wish you could make it so 1 flick up and down controls the volume and maybe 1 tap pauses/unpauses. It makes it worthless to stick in your pocket at the gym because it rotates too much.
Crashes FREQUENTLY
Thedudemanchill 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
And the interface is pretty clunky...
Very handy in the car
digikey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great for while driving, but like others have said, it is difficult to use anywhere but the car because of it's auto-rotate feature. One minor thing that bugs me is that I am so used to cover flow that I sometimes skip backwards instead of fast-forwarding to the next track because coverflow "moves" the view opposite the way you flick. A setting to reverse the swipe direction would be very nice.
Perfect for the treadmill!
buttbutt_03 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Very easy to control while running and not wanting to become the next commercial where you slide off the deck!!!
Fills a big hole in iPod navigation!
rtgoodwin 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I like to set my iphone on my console while driving, and use the AUX jack to
Crashes FREQUENTLY
Thedudemanchill 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
And the interface is pretty clunky... 1.2 Update: the player keeps on crashing on me! UNACCEPTABLE. It seems to happen practically every time I use it!
This app has grown a lot!
1337_g33k 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Sure, the first release of this app had a few bugs (hey, it was a brand new app on a brand new OS), but it's grown a lot since it was released. It's got a ton of new features and is rock solid now. I'm surprised by all the one and two star ratings for this app. Notice how nearly all of the written reviews are glowing? Give it a shot, what have you got to loose? 99 cents? Big whoop. If you still don't like it, contact the support or leave a review saying why! Who knows, maybe they'll fix it.
Flick Tunes Review
Molex1701 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This had become my favorite music player. I use the built in music player to use Genius play list then switch to Flick Tunes to control it while at work, in car or whatever. I even placed it on my docked icons. It allows easy switching of music, pause/play, and volume control with swipe of your fingers.
Saves me from wrecking.
rodlebod 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Easy to use while driving. Has enough customization to please everyone.
Excellant
eastsidebill 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Just what I needed for use while driving.
This is the answer to my prayers
El Brooklyn 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
If you're a VW driver who's tried to use the VW branded iPod connector, you've been locked out of your player for the past three years because you just get an "Accessory Attached" screen whenever you plug it in. This program is great because it gives you full control (including steering wheel buttons) as well as having the great-while-driving big type and pictures. Thanks, SoGeeky! The only issue I have is that my iPhone 3GS with a Monsoon double-din head unit and VW brand iPod connector won't permanently pause with a flick. It stops for just a few seconds, then resumes play.
Safe Flick
ChiefCarit 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Simple and easy to use.
I Lost My $0.99!!!!!!!!!!
Victor Lafuente 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This App has an horrendous interface and the swipes are not always recognized. I prefer to double-click the home button and bring my iPod Controls...
Love this app!
1337_g33k 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
I love this app and use it every day! You don't realize what you're missing until you get this...
Excellent...still a staff favorite!
buttbutt_03 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
version 1.2 is working great!
lousy
gokcchiefs58 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This thing doesn't work so well. I want my buck back.
Killer app
Pyenoh 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Love this app for when I'm driving!! A life saving app. Just load your playlist or tracks in iTunes or the app itself and then run the app. Control every aspect with a flick. My only issue is that when I'm driving and the phone is flat next to my gear shift, depending on the road level/grade the app flips to landscape or just flips. Not that big of a prob now that I stuff something under the top. Still a killer awsome app!!
bad app. Save your money!
kurtpr 2.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
does not even give you a readout where you are in a song. No fast forward or reverse just skipping 30s. 2x and 0.5x speed don't work, a must for podcast listeners. buggy interface.
Great app with a very good interface!
ZZZOOMM 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
This has made my driving much safer. I love using my iPhone while driving. This worked so well and it is very intuitive (Something you don't see in a lot of apps these days.) I thought I would use the Lefty mode but actually normal works best for me. I wish I could use this with Pandora but I realize that would mean using it as a background task.
Good App
Taurus X-1 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Good for keeping your eyes on the road while driving. Especially useful for iPods that do not connect to cars.
Awesome app
MagicMan505 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.0
Perfect for driving, walking, and workouts.
Great app! (Needs 1more great feature)
oldbroadway 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
This is a handy app. Dose it's job! One thing that would make this app the best app and outstanding to it's competition is by having the ability to see the lyrics of the song while the songs playing. Ps. That one feature would make me pay more cash for this app.
The new version is better than ever!
1337_g33k 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
I love this app and use it every day! You don't realize what you're missing until you get this... This update rocks - the new look is awesome! To all the old reviewers saying it lacks this or that, check it out again. Just about everything you've asked for is there now.
Great, BUT
Doc2008 4.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
No power save mode so that is unfortunate. Ugly icon Otherwise they hit the sweet spot. I like this over fluxtunes and opus.
Great for the car!
Fazetoo 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
I've checked out several of these types of applications, and Flicktunes ended up being the one that met my needs. The response to the swipes is very forgiving. No accidental volume blast increases, etc. There is enough customization options to allow one to setup the player to best meet their needs. The 30 second forward and reverse option is a great feature in the car, much better than the tiny scrobbler option in the standard player. Another nice feature is the automatic shuffle of your music collection if you don't want to pick a particular song/album/playlist at the start. Overall very easy to use and navigate with the minimal amount of attention needed to divert from the road. Lastly, the price is a bargain. Thanks!
works great
zodiastic 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
Very intuitive commands make it easy to brainlessly (and sightlessly) change song and volume while driving. So much safer than hunting for the teeny button in the ipod functionality. Highly recommended.
Just buy it!
bschwartz 5.0 stars Version: 1.3.0
This app is what the iPod app on the iPhone should have been. It makes the app so much easier to use in the car and while running. The text on the screen is much easier to read and the controls infintely easier to use while not looking directly at the iPhone. The new features that were added just keep making this app more and more worthwhile. Can't wait to see what they add next. If you use the iPod app a lot this is a no brainer purchase.
The perfect application for use in a car dock.
fcorona76 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.1
I tried & downloaded several applications that touted their strengths as a media player/app for use in a car dock but they were all overly flashy or inexcusably broke. I was looking for several key things and this is the ONLY application that I found that not only advertised these features but actually had them functional too. Among my requirements were: - Larger font for Artist/Album/Song so I could see what was playing from the Ipod in its car dock almost 2 feet away - FlickTunes has many fonts and adjustable sizes - Allow me one-touch access to play random music - FlickTunes does that and allows me to configure what playlist to open by default or choose all songs - Had to work with a dock/dock cable - FlickTunes is not limited to headphone/miniRCA only like another app I tried - Wanted it to be a stand alone application that would not rely on me first starting up the music & then loading a "skin". - FlickTunes does not require anything else to start playing music AND can still bounce between apps & the default music player with no interupption to the music. Some apps would stop playback upon hitting the home button....not FlickTunes. - Wanted larger buttons to be able to change songs & pause/play without having to take my eyes off the road. - FlickTunes goes a step further and has fully configurable gesture controls for one, two, and three finger gestures so you can make it do just about anything without having to look down. Overall it was well worth the price....now I wish I could get all my money back for the far inferior apps I wasted my money on. BUY IT!
Have you tried using the scrubber bar on a treadmill?
mylo52 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.1
Have you tried to fast forward a podcast while running on the treadmill? How about driving? If you've tried to use the scrubber bar while running on a treadmill, you've probably also been thrown off of the back of said treadmill. Let's not talk about scrubbing a podcast while driving. That's silly. Flicktunes fills in the gaps and makes it easy to customize and control how you interact with your content. The developer of this app has gone to great lengths to give you control and customization back. This app is a slamdunk. I highly recommend it!
Just perfect!
newkie5000 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.1
The perfect app for my tunes in the car. Very simple and configurable.
Do these guys ever sleep?
1337_g33k 5.0 stars Version: 1.7.7
You just don't realize what the built in iPod app is missing until you get this. This is one idea that just rocks! And they don't ever seem to stop working on it... Thanks for the bug fixes!
Best music player
Photobank 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Version 4.0: great job guys! This new update puts FT above Opus easily. Thanks for addinding screen rotation. The customizable gestures work great. And I can choose my own font (the old one was an eyesore). Things to add for next update: • Double tap gesture • Screen dimming. (after a few seconds the screen dims but you can still do touch gestures) Version 3.0: I finally upgraded to OS 3.0 so I decided to get a music player seeing as Apple doesn't understand how to make a decent interface. It's ridiculous trying to hit those tiny buttons while driving. I browsed around looking for the best one and decided on Opus and Flicktunes. Flicktunes wins by just a bit. It starts up faster and the reaction times to commands are instant (Opus can be a bit slow sometimes). The text is big so it's easy to read in the car. Also while using Opus it didn't shuffle when I set it. The one thing Opus does have over FT is it's customization features. You can assign any touch gesture to any command. You can also change the screen orientation to display upside down or landscape. I love that feature because I have an iPod with the headphone Jack on the bottom so when I plug it in my car everything is upside down. If you add this feature to Flicktunes I'll rate it 5 stars.
Get this app!
MuskratLove 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
I am rarely inclined to write a review but honestly, this one deserves it. I pretty much hate using the default iPod controls thanks to FlickTunes. It's so easy and intuitive and they're constantly making updates to make it better. Seriously devs, keep up the good work. You guys f'ing rock! 
Great, but one thing
Doc2008 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Got a little bloated in the recent update which I was not happy about, but I discussed my issue with the developer and he/she said they will get it worked out in the new version. Opus is a close second, but this one is cleaner and to the point. It's my go to, home screen program. I have tried at least 5 of these types of programs and this is the best. Continually being developed. Icon is not very nice looking though so maybe that can be worked on too?
Just what the iPhone's iPod needed
Plan K 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Steve Jobs said the iPhone's iPod was the best iPod ever. I never found that to be true. It was extremely hard to function compared to the clickwheel iPod. Playing and pausing and choosing a song or playlist often required that attention be paid to the screen. Scrubbing through audio was possible, but impractical, even with improvements made in the iPhone 3.0 software.
Superb
HLKCO 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Really great. I love how you can be safe and listen to your music at the same time! I'm definetly keeping this app. Good job!
Just want to add my praise
CrimzonWolf 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Great App. This makes driving while listening so mutch easier. er, safer. With my iPod Classic I used to be able to navigate without ever taking my eyes off the road. The Touch makes it hard. FlickTunes makes it easy again to keep eyes on hte road while fast forwarding, skipping, pausing etc. And HEY! Since I hated MOST of the default settings, I just changed them. They make it really easy. Really nice job guys/gals/whatever you are. :)
Amazing app!
alx7000 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Can't believe I got it for free! Easily worth $$$. Fully customizable, thanks for a great app!
Thanks
Nytimesreader 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.0
Great little app. So useful and easy to use.
Wonderful
joemeyer 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
Easy to set up custom gestures to control music.
Great player for driving
Forlindon 5.0 stars Version: 1.5.0
This player makes controlling your music, podcasts, and audio-books safer and more convenient. Moving around in the track with gestures is my favorite feature. No more trying to put my finger right on that little dot and moving it back and forth. Just swipe to move a set amount forward or back.
