5 apps for summer travel
Calendar16 Sat, 25 Jun 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
Summer has officially begun here in the States. Schools are closing and families are planning vacations across our great land. It can be a hassle, but don't fret! Here are five apps to make your adventure more enjoyable. (Free) When my sisters and I were young, my dad routinely stuffed us into the "wayback" of our Matador station wagon where we sat, sweaty and gobbling Chicken McNuggets, en route to nowhere in particular. Ah, I can still smell the BBQ dipping sauce and leaded gas fumes. Few contemporary families enjoy a Sunday drive, and that's what the aptly-named Sunday Drive for iPhone aims to change. The attractive, location-based app represents a growing database of user-supplied travel routes, attractions and single-day getaways. To get started, let the iPhone find your location via GPS. A map will load with the familiar blue dot as well as Sunday Drive icons representing logged drives. Tap Read More

Recently I spent a few days in Paris, France. I travel light: One bag (pro tip: Roll your clothes), one jacket and one hat. I love getting my necessities down to a single carry-on bag. What I hate is all the paper. Airline confirmation receipts, bus schedules, relevant correspondence from family and friends, etc. Not to mention lists of restaurants to try, sights to see, etc. This time I went nearly paper-free (I'm sticking with paper boarding passes for international flights, although iPhone scanning has been done and is now officially supported by some carriers), thanks to my iPhone and 2 applications. Here's how I did it.Tracking flights Of course, the first thing I've got to do is line up all of my flights. I typically go from Boston to Newark when I'm traveling internationally, which means there are several connecting flights to manage with Flight Update and Evernote. Flight Update Read More

Best Available Flight Planer
guitarfreakbob 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm not usually one to write a review of an application, but I felt it was necessary that I do following the experience I had with this product. I purchased this application while searching aimlessly for the correct departure gate for my flight, which the departure screens failed to display. This application was more accurate than the local screens at the airport! I found the correct gate thanks to this application. There were only a couple problems I experienced while operating the application. First, I loved the seating chart feature. While I recognize that you may not be directly affiliated with the site that provides the seat information, I experienced a few errors with it. I received a few loading errors, as well as an 'insufficieny memory to load the page'. Also, I'd like to have the opportunity to contribute to their seat rating system to help other travelers learn about the benefits of their seat choice before they have to withstand a bad experience. The other error I had trouble with was the flight legs feature. The flight number I inputted had multiple legs that continued on after my final destination. I was presented with three choices of flights, one of which was correct, however regardless of which choice I picked, the same flight information was inputted into my trip. I found the correct flight by selecting my flight in the search feature, but it also inputted the destination that followed mine. Finally, as a suggestion for future updates, I'd like to see calendar integration. I hate having to input the trip information twice, so if there was an option to share trip information with the calendar application (perhaps also including flight departure and arrival time) would be amazing. Thank you for providing the best flight tracking app thus far, although it is a little pricey.
Good basic flight tracker although expensive

Good basic flight tracker for the frequent flyer:
This app has a niche for airline commuters
EdPilot 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I've had a total change of heart about this app. I wanted to like it from the very beginning, but found its limitations with respect to searching for flights in the future most frustrating. I liked the interface, and liked the way the flights were presented.
Solid app
ndgunner 4.0 stars Version: 2.5
Flight Update provides quality information and full flight details, including carriers that only operate in Europe (Aegean Air, etc). Whereas other apps are specifically flight-based, FlightUpdate is trip-based (with a trip containing one or many flights), under the assumption that when you're going somewhere, you are probably going to come home.
Not bad but not as fantastic as other reviews make it out to be....

I've also purchased Flight Tracker by SplashData and although it's not as comprehensive as Flight Update, you can search flights by date instead of by flight number. It's a hassle to have to find out/know the actual flight number to get flight info. Why not have an option to look up flights by date and airline instead? The program isn't that easy to use. I'm very computer literate and still find navigating through this program to be time consuming. I've added flights to my itinerary that are more than a month away and Flight Update can't verify them; yet, cheaper programs, such as Flight Tracker can? That's absurd. And the fact that you need to create an entire trip itinerary before entering flight data is ridiculous. I guess what I'm ultimately getting at is that there are way too many steps involved just to get flight information. If Silverware could make their program a) more accurate -- even with flights months (or at least weeks) ahead and b) easier to navigate/user friendly/simpler, then this program would be fantastic. Hopefully Silverware will read my review (because it's pretty extensive and well informed) and take my advice. 8 bucks is a lot of money to pay for an application that's this time consuming with very little benefit to the end user. UPDATE: to address a few things brought up by Silverware. A) I meant Flight Tracker but to argue semantics is quite petty. B) I've entered a flight for early December and flight update cannot verify it yet Flight Tracker can. C) the long list, whilst extremely comprehensive (kudos to Silverware), is still very time consuming to navigate around - personal preference though. I think it's useful so keep it. But my main issue was the fact that you do, indeed, have to set up an entire itinerary to look up a flight by flight number. The itinerary is a nice feature but it should be optional and there should be an easier way to find flights by date instead of using the Flight number.
JUST USED IT ON A LONG TRIP

During the last two weeks I have traveled from Hawaii to Oakland to Seattle to Alaska to San Francisco and then back to Hawaii. I bought this app as it claims to be the end all beat all of Air travel apps. Well, I will have to say that I agree. Almost everything I needed was included in this app. It updates quickly and accurately. It allowed me to know where connecting gates were and where baggage claims were before other travelers even had a chance to depart the plane. But, I did pay a lot for this app so would like to see the following additions to keep this one on top. Thanks for the great app!!
Data not timely
Jimf233 2.0 stars Version: 1.6
I am using this so for the first time. A flight delay was announced 36 minutes ago in the airport but the app still shows it on time. Not sure whether orhers could so better, but this is not good enough to be useful.
Best "Tripper"
mickydeenyc 5.0 stars Version: 2.5
I found it a tad complex the first to Me I tried it. I even removed it from my iPhone. Then I decided to give of another chance after buying and using two other flight status apps. This software is the BEST of all of them. Populating a trip with flights is super easy. Just know your airline and flight number! (and date) Flight Update does the rest of the work. It goes to the Net (like all of these apps SHOULD) and finds your flight. It automatically enters your airports and scheduled departure and arrival times! You don't have to select your airports from a long list. And why SHOULD you?! If a flight makes a stop, say LAX, EWR and then some Euro city, you're presented with a very easy airport picker. (With ONLY the relevant airports.) Just click on the left of your departing airport and click on the right of your destination. Especially handy for frequent travelers, Flight Update is the best and most stable of the pack.
Saved our Behinds!
SkidmoreRocks 4.0 stars Version: 2.5
Was flying to Ithaca, NY from Newark on a very cold and snowy night. The agent told us that the flight might be canceled, and the passengers at the gate and I were able to find accurate flight staus updates and alternate flight info. Our flight eventually did depart that evening, but not without the gate agents providing passengers with the wrong information. They insisted that the equipment was 30 minutes from Newark, but the app's map indicated that it was 1 minute away, at a low altitude (read: landing). Sure enough, the plane parked at the gate 2 minutes later. Great app, especially because it gives information in a timely and clear to read format. Perhaps if the legacy carriers provided iPhones and a copy of this app to its gate agents, folks would be happier with their flying experiences!
Great flight tracking tool

A solid app
DarrinC 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
This is a solid app, does what it says and the developer is very responsive and helpful by email. Well worth the price.
This application is useful, especially for Pilots and Flight Attendants
Angel in the Sky 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
I'm a flight attendant and this is amazing! I'm able to put in trips for work and commuting. I can also easily check the status on my iPhone before ever logging into my employee website. I cannot stress how easy it was for me to enter in my flight legs and save it. One might find annoyance with the "update" between screen views, but at least you know the data you're looking at is up-to-date. So one's annoyance is my blessing. Simply amazing! I'm thoroughly impressed. Nice work for keeping me on track.
Great concept but updates not timely
Ismack 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
This application has everything going for it, great look and feel, well thought out functionality, etc, etc. It's huge flaw, however, is that the updates are not timely. My flight from greensboro to philly was cancelled the other day and the usair website had the information posted a good hour and a half before this app. That's the difference between getting on another flight and not. For the hefty price of this app, I think this flaw is not acceptable. Would love the developers to address this.
Love this app!
Goyito :) 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great app! The best thing about this app is that I can enter my trip weeks in advance and it works! Most (if not all) of the other apps only get the flight information 3 days in advance. I like to enter my trips when I purchase my ticket...and usually don't have time to do all that in the 3 days before my trip! Second thing: I had one issue where the airline I used wasn't showing up (smaller Canadian airline...so I wasn't surprised)...but I emailed the developer...and got a superfast personal reply and the problem was addressed and fixed in the next update! Kudos on a great job!
Love it!
Kaceemae 4.0 stars Version: 2.5
Love this program. I use it to track my fiancé's flights as he is a pilot and therefore flies a lot. He also has it and uses it to find flights for all the airlines into our city so he can commute to and from his base. The only thing flight update is missing is the weather radar on the map. I would recommend it to any airline crewmember and their families.
Works well for me
Hankus24 4.0 stars Version: 2.5
Don't know about the complaints of others, but it has worked swell for me. I don't think five bucks is too much to spend for a product like this.
exactly what I was looking for
yliu 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
When I set out to find a flight status app, I basically wanted to input my itinerary ahead of time and have it output the terminal, gate, and flight status of each flight. I can then see at a glance what connection I need to make and where to go next, as soon as I land, without having to stop and look for an airport screen. This one fulfilled all of my requirements, and threw in a few bonuses like seat maps in a way that is unobtrusive -- they're nifty, but they don't get in the way of the primary purpose of the app. Search flights by airports or by flight number is a good touch -- sometimes I can rattle off the flight number, but sometimes I just know where it's going. It occasionally updates faster than local airport screens as well (a flight was marked as delayed on the app while the counter agent was still insisting to me that it was on time) so that's nice, but probably more to do with the data source of this app rather than the app itself.
Favorite App

Sometimes get info before the board or gate agent shows changes, thank you very much. Wish it would have some type of automated input from the airlines (eg, plug in a confirm number and reach out to the airlines to fill in flight data). Zooming in on the map in flight to see what city I'm flying over would be super cool. Finally, wish I could take the flight I had last month and just change the date for this month's trip. It does everything else you need great!
Good app

An absolute must for aircrew. I use this app daily to keep track of my flights. I find it to be extremely useful and reliable. I had a layover in Tampa last week, the monitors showed my flight as ontime, but Flight Update was showing a 45 min delay. Turns out Flight Update was correct. The trip feature is

I'm happy I decided to spend -yet another- $5 on a flight tracker when the others were so bad. This one is great! Works with international flights and is incredibly accurate.
Not a very good flight tracker
Emyact79 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I bought this app yesterday and can already say I am dissappointed. My flight that was cancelled an hour ago is still showing as on time on this app. Wish I hadn't wasted my money on an app that doesn't actually track flights in a timely manner.
Recommend FlightTrack or Flight Status
iPhone64152 3.0 stars Version: 2.5
I'm a frequent flyer and received free copies of a couple of the flight programs so I plan to do a comprehensive review when I have more time. I tested FlightTrack, Flight Status, Flight Update, Flights and Flight. I would rank the programs in that order and would not recommend Flight Update given the better products. The interface is very frustrating and makes it undesirable for busy professionals. FT, FU and Flights all use FlightView status data, however, Flights does the best job of reporting when a flight will be early. Flights is often on sale for 99 cents and gets the job done for most people. Don't pay more unless there is a specific feature or user interface you want.
Developer: You wrong. Reviewer jt9110 is right
Solebon Fan 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Normally when we want to travel, we want to know which flights go to our destination. Or when we are expecting a guest to arrive by air, we may want to know which flights are on the route the guest is on. An application that requires that you know the flight number cannot be useful in such situations. It presumes you use other sources to get the details before you turn to the application for flight status. That is what the reviewer is talking about. Come on. Stop being defensive and critical of reviewer comments and come up with an application that addresses reviewer concerns. Your market does not consist only of the traveler who already knows the flight details but also those who look to getting the details from your application. I read your comments to the reviewer and bought the application to check it out and find the reviewer was absolutely correct. I will keep it though awaiting updates or use it alongside others that provide the details. After all I have already paid for it.
Outstanding App

Great app with lots of info. Straight forward easy to understand and use. A future suggestion to ADD international flights and app would be awesome. Very satisfied company traveller. Tom P
Considerably improved för international flights in version 3.0
Carl-Uno 4.0 stars Version: 3.0
Previous version had problems with flight starting and landing in different time zones in particular between US and Asia. This is how mostly fixed, but is still missing info about å flight that arrives on å different date.
Very useful
Tvlguy 4.0 stars Version: 3.0
I love the app except the flight tracking. The map is much less detailed than other programs. It really just gives you the general vicinity vs others where you can actually see the cities it is near. Get a better tracking system and I'd five this 5 stars.
Best flight tracker overall
BDB4 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
This app is for the person who likes a lot of information concisely arranged. It organizes flights into trips (unlike some other flight trackers) and summarizes the data all in a single screen for each trip. The flight-tracking map is not as good as some other flight-tracking apps, but even so this is my flight-tracker of choice.
Great info!
Shayc 3.0 stars Version: 3.1
I just bought this for my trip home for xmas. Our flights were very delayed and we thought we'd miss our connection. The whole time we waited in SF, this app had the facts before the staff did. When we landed in Chicago, this app told us exactly which gate and the new departure time. Other sources gave out-of-date info. I'd give 5 stars if the UI were better (I'm an UI designer) but the info is what really counts.
Worth the price for anyone who travels even occasionally
ATCS2152 4.0 stars Version: 3.1
I just completed my first trip with Flight Update and I am VERY pleased with the application. It's well worth the cost for anyone who travels even occasionally. Prior to departing my on my first leg, I was able to get the arrival and departure gate information for my layover. The first departure was delayed and as the data was updated the program recalculated the amount of layover time for me.
Awesome
kcmac1 5.0 stars Version: 3.2
Just downloaded new update (7.27.09). Love the new aarival depature screen. Awesome and so easy to read. Still trying to decide whether to upgrade to the pro version so I can upload/download tripit info. Gets better all the time. I love this app. Ability to populate flight info more than 3 days out is critical to my busy schedule for work and travel. It's been said often but I will repeat that this dev is almost instantaneous with replies. Now apple needs to play ball and let apps like this integrate with iCal.
A MUST FOR COMMUTING FLIGHT CREWS!
SWASTEW 5.0 stars Version: 3.2
If you are an airline pilot/flight attendant that commutes or if you are a frequent flyer this app is an absolute must have. It is one of the most used apps on my iPhone. No more phone calls to reservations! No more searching for a computer with internet access! All the info you need plus more is at your finger tips with this app. In the few weeks that I've had this app it's already shaved off HOURS from my commute time. It's so convenient to not only check the flight times, status and gate info of your own airline but of other airlines as well. And for those who are complaining about certain features not working on version 3.2 BE PATIENT!! I spoke with Tech Support at Silverware Software on July 29th to report a bug (which they are already aware of) and to make a few suggestions on future updates. They promise another update is on the way however each update takes sometimes weeks for Apple to approve. Tech Support was AWESOME! I got right through to them and spoke with the technician for almost 20 minutes. They are extremely friendly and helpful. They also welcome ideas on how to improve the software. GET THIS APP. You won't be disappointed.
Needs Improvements
