Following its November debut, HTML5 publishing platform (and TechCrunch Disrupt finalist) Pressly, is preparing to launch its self-serve platform for bloggers. Planned to go live this spring, the platform will allow publishers of any kind – big or small –  to transform their WordPress sites, Tumblr blogs, Twitter updates and other social feeds into tablet and touch-friendly sites that work on the iPad, iPhone, Kindle Fire, BlackBerry PlayBook and Android tablets. Until now, Pressly has been focused on bringing in major publications to its platform, and has signed up The Toronto Star, The Economist Group, plus a yet-to-launch NBC property, and an unnamed Canadian news site. Meanwhile, well-funded competitor OnSwipe, launched in June 2011, also has a few big names on its platform, including Marie Claire, Ryan Seacrest and Hollywood.com, to name a few, as well as popular tech reads like BetaBeat, TNW, Geek.com and PSFK. The Top 20 iPhone And iPad Apps of 2011

Editor’s note: Contributor Brad Spirrison is the managing editor of mobile app discovery services Appolicious, AndroidApps.com and AppVee. With this post, he continues an annual tradition of picking the best iOS apps of the year. It’s telling that Apple chose an app that debuted more than 14 months ago, Instagram, as its “iPhone App of the Year” for 2011. This should not imply that there was a shortage of quality and groundbreaking apps released this year. Far from it. From social magazines to music discovery apps to console-quality games that players can hold in the palms of their hands, there are hundreds of new titles in the iTunes App Store that will inform, organize, and entertain virtually anyone who owns an iOS device. As more choices become available to different kinds of consumers, however, it’s difficult to identify the undisputed champions of the app world. We picked 20 of the best Read More
by Flipboard’s social reader app for iPhone and iPod Touch devices has been downloaded more than one million times in its first week, bringing the total number of Flipboard users up to 5 million. Engagement with the app has also tripled: Users are set to flip two billion pages this month, up from the iPad’s monthly average of 650 million. The iPhone app, which displays feeds from both formal news sources and social networks in a magazine-like format, has received widely positive reviews from the press and App Store reviewers alike. That’s largely because Flipboard’s development team thoroughly reengineered the app to serve the unique habits of newsreaders on the iPhone. Users get to access all of their newsfeeds in quick bursts without sacrificing what Flipboard CEO Mike McCue describes as “the notion of bringing beauty to these posts.” The app shows stories in a single stack of headlines and thumbnails, Read More
Wondering why those 40 stories that you just flipped past in Flipboard are still showing up as “unread” in Google Reader? You’re not the only one. Flipboard is supposed to auto-magically mark items as read as you turn the app’s digital pages, but there’s a strange bug that may have been present as far back as v1.6 (the second-last update), that basically broke the magic.    I found this out after three days of using Flipboard and seeing the same pile of stories in my Reader folders, despite having flipped past them on multiple occasions. I tried  toggling all of the settings switches (featured in the screenshot above) on and off, restarting the app on my iPhone and iPad…and then finally reading the support forums. It’s there that I read a tip from John Virtes, Flipboard’s rep on Twitter, to simply log out of Google Reader and then log back in.  Read More
Fly Or Die: Flipboard For The iPhone

Last night, Flipboard released its long-awaited iPhone app. The app is a companion to its popular iPad reader which renders feeds and realtime streams into a magazine-like experience. The iPhone app is already so popular that it took down Flipboard’s service earlier today. In this episode of Fly or Die, John Biggs and I take the iPhone app through the paces. (You can watch our episode on the original iPad app here from last January). The iPhone app is gorgeous, as you would expect from Flipboard. Biggs thinks it’s more busy than beautiful. It’s certainly not the most efficient way to go through your information streams, but that is not the point. It strips down the iPad app and presents it on the smaller screen. You flip vertically through your stories, headlines, and Tweets instead of horizontally and there is a promising new feature called Cover Stories that attempts to pull Read More

Hands on with Flipboard for iPhone: Small screen success

On the iPad, few would deny that Flipboard is a category leader; its delivery of personalized, multi-source news and features is pretty hard to top. Now, the Flipboard team has brought that class-defining experience to the iPhone, in a way that makes perfect sense for the smaller screen. The app does a great job of telling you from the very first that it’s still Flipboard; it shares aesthetic sensibilities and principles of content organization with its big brother on the iPad. You won’t have to relearn the experience all over again for the iPhone, either, with the small exception of having to swipe up and down instead of left and right to navigate between stories. Unlike Flipboard on the iPad, the iPhone version has to deal with a few limitations, the most significant of which being available screen real estate. It does so wonderfully, but refining the Flipboard experience to a Read More

Flipboard Comes to the iPhone

posted by Jacob Penderworth on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 8:49 am.   Flipboard has finally arrived on your smartphone! (Provided that you have Apple’s smartphone, that is.) Just today, the once iPad-exclusive personalized social magazine has become available on all iOS devices, including the iPod touch. The iPhone edition has an exclusive “cover stories” feature that learns from what you read and pins the most notable sources to the app’s home screen. These sources can range from your Twitter and Instagram accounts to your RSS or Flipboard feeds. This allows for swift recognition of more significant events, rather than regular — and possibly dull — news. Cover Stories are apparently “[c]oming soon to iPad.” Flipboard explains how Cover Stories work: With Flipboard for iPhone we’re introducing Cover Stories. Think of Cover Stories as the feed to check when you’re in line at the coffee shop, commuting on the train or Read More

Flipboard has been updated to a universal app and now works on the iPhone and iPod touch. The iPhone version of the Flipboard app lets you read news using a beautiful flip style interface that gets aggregated from a variety of sources including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Reader, LinkedIn, Flickr, Tumblr, and more. A new feature has been added to the Flipboard app on the iPhone called Cover Stories. With Cover Stories you get a snap glance at what is happening right now that is interesting and relevant to you based on your personal linked accounts. The Flipboard app then learns and fine tunes your Cover Stories in Flipboard as you start to mute people or sources you don’t want to hear from, and or star the ones you care about most. In the settings section of the Flipboard app you can manage a list of Muted Authors. The Cover Stories Read More

Calendar16 Wed, 07 Dec 2011 13:59:15 UTC +00:00
Popular iPad app Flipboard has finally made its way to the iPhone. The iPhone version takes the elegant simplicity of the iPad version and brings it to the smaller screen. Just like the iPad, the iPhone version lets you read articles in your news stream using a magazine-style interface. The articles are easy to read and beautifully presented. It’s one of the best reading experiences you can find on the iPhone. The iPhone version also adds a new feature called Cover Stories. Cover Stories are articles chosen from your news feed that appear on a dedicated page within the app. You can select which feeds appear in your Cover stories which makes it perfect for getting a quick glimpse of  your favorite news. Cover Stories is available on the iPhone and will hit the iPad soon. If you use the app on both the iPad and the iPhone, you’ll want to sign up for a Flipboard account which will let you sync information between the two devices.  You can grab Flipboard for the iPhone for free from the App Store and sign up for an account from Read More

Flipboard for iPhone released
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Dec 2011 06:00:00 UTC +00:00
Flipboard, the popular personal magazine app that's been tremendously successful on the iPad, has been updated to a universal version that now also works on the iPhone and iPod touch. Other features included in the latest Flipboard update include: Setting up Flipboard on the iPhone is extremely simple if you've already set up a Flipboard account in the iPad app, and all your data immediately syncs over quite seamlessly. As for the experience of using the app itself, it's a bit different from the iPad version; only one article at a time shows up in the viewer, and you swipe vertically through articles rather than horizontally as on the iPad. There also doesn't appear to be any support for landscape orientation at this point, which seems an odd omission. Other than those minor quirks, using Flipboard on the iPhone is almost as delightful as using it on the iPad. For those Read More
At Long Last, Flipboard Launches an iPhone App
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Dec 2011 05:01:00 UTC +00:00
For iPad owners, the personalized, socially-curated digital magazine Flipboard is one of the absolute must-install apps for the device. For many, social news-reading apps like this have begun to replace printed magazines and newspapers all together. Pretty much since it first debuted on Apple's tablet in July 2010, users have been clamoring for an iPhone version of Flipboard. Today, that wait ends. Flipboard's latest update, available now in the App Store, brings the same social media-fueled reading experience to the smaller screen of the iPhone and iPod Touch. The team at Flipboard has done a remarkable job of whittling down what previously occupied a 10-inch screen so that it will properly fit on a smartphone. Not only did they size things down without losing any features, but they redesigned the experience to be more useful in a mobile context, Flipboard cofounder Evan Doll told us. Rather than flipping horizontally as the Read More

Homescreens – Oktober 2011 (iPhone + iPad)

Must Have iPad Applications #1-5
Calendar16 Sun, 11 Sep 2011 13:00:16 UTC +00:00
If you have recently bought a new iPad I have some “must have” apps you should start out with. Of course, some apps you may wonder why they are so “must have” and argue that you don’t need them. Ok, you just might not. This is my list and there may be more that you would suggest (please do so in the comments). This is the first 5 and I will post more in chunks of 5 in the future. For what it’s worth, here’s my list: This is the app, next to Google, that will teach you pretty much anything. Here’s a article and links to studies on it. Anyway, I like it and it’s Read More
Flipboard is reportedly looking to expand beyond social media and RSS feeds to include TV shows, movies and eventually ebooks to the mix. According to the company’s CEO Mike McCue, video content may be included at the end of the year. In the meantime, it’s good to hear that the popular personalized magazine will be released for the iPhone and iPod Touch users “in a few weeks.” Then, once the iPhone is cleared, I guess Android users will get their Flipboard fix too, though I’m just speculating. At the moment, Flipboard has about 3 million users and is now competing with bigger companies like AOL, which recently launched AOL Editions offers pretty similar experience. We at IntoMobile like cheering for the small guy and are looking forward to see Flipboard taking advantage of being the first on the market. Adding more and different kinds of content can certainly help get more Read More

Flipboard for iPad looking to add TV shows, movies, more
Calendar16 Fri, 26 Aug 2011 05:00:00 UTC +00:00
Reuters reports that popular iPad magazine aggregation app Flipboard might soon expand beyond aggregating social media and RSS feeds and incorporate TV shows and movies into the app. Don't get too excited yet, though. Flipboard CEO Mike McCue said he plans to begin tackling Flipboard's video ambitions at the end of the year, so it's going to be a while before users see any streaming shows in the app. McCue also said he eventually hopes to add ebooks to the Flipboard lineup if he can cut a deal with publishers. Additionally iPhone fans will be happy to hear that Flipboard is coming to the iPhone and the iPod touch "in a few weeks," according to Reuters. Flipboard currently has over 3 million downloads, which speaks to the appeal of news aggregation apps. The field is quickly becoming a hot sector, with CNN reportedly set to buy Zite for up to US$25 Read More

Flipboard has cut its own ad deals before, but the Conde partnership is the first implementation of their evolved business model, which allows publishers to sell their own ads into the app. A friend just picked up a shiny new iPad and asked me for my app recommendations.   Obviously, we get similar questions often, so I drew up a list of the apps that I use often that most any iPad user might consider. Wundermap: Appshopper: Find new, free, and price-reduced apps.    Pulse:  Innovative news/RSS reader.     Flipboard:  An alternative to Pulse.       Wikibot:  Wikipedia reader with read-ahead, etc.        Noteability:  Take notes with optional linked audio recording.       Simplenote:  Simple text note-taker with sync to other devices and the Web.       Goodreader:  Sync and view documents and other media.       eFax:  Send/receive faxes.       neu.Annotate:  Annotate/sign PDFs.           ABC Player:  Watch full episodes of ABC shows.       IMDB:  Access the Internet Movie Database.      iMyAddress:  Use GPS to find the nearest street address.   Got any other suggestions?  Leave them in the comments below. Popular iPad magazine app and Apple's iPad App of the Year Flipboard has just released a new version featuring a handful of updates, including one which has the company rethinking a user's first-time experience with the application. Now, instead of having to configure Flipboard with your favorite sources for online news, photos and other topics, a new content guide lets you immediately start browsing well-known websites formatted in an easy-to-read magazine-style layout. Flipboard has also added built-in search, LinkedIn integration and has reformatted how the links from Twitter appear. But the company's biggest update is still yet to come. The newest release of Flipboard is more evolutionary than revolutionary. The most notable change is the improved access to finding and discovery content. In the latest version, tapping on a red ribbon at the top right of the home screen ("More") takes you into a content guide where you can delve into Read More

Wither iPad? A Testimonial On Its Usefulness
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Mar 2011 17:45:00 UTC +00:00
(image source: Apple, Inc) With the release of the iPad 2, there has been a lot of commentary on the overall usefulness of the iPad. Even amongst the iSource staff, there is some debate as to whether or not the iPad is a truly useful device, or merely an expensive toy. Here’s my take. When the iPad was announced a year ago, I had no plans at all to buy it. Like many others, I concluded that it was little more than a large iPod Touch; and I simply didn’t see a need for one, especially considering that I had a perfectly usable iPhone. When my friend Mike got one, I played around with it a bit; but ultimately, I came to the same conclusion – a big iPod. Much later, when I started traveling for work again, I finally realized how useful the iPad could be and decided to take Read More
If you've been following TUAW's reports about The Daily, you're aware that many of the TUAW bloggers are so fed up with the buggy, crashing newspaper app that they've removed it from their iPads while the app is still free. For me, the crashes and slow loading weren't as much of an irritant as the lack of customizable and local content. I just don't want to pay for horoscopes, fashion news and entertainment gossip that I can't turn off, and the fact that I can't read any local news on the app killed it for me. Yahoo! has apparently been listening, as the struggling internet giant has announced -- but hasn't shipped -- its solution to the problem that is The Daily. It has announced Livestand for iPad, a customizable news app that will be available "in the first half of 2011." There's no word on whether Yahoo! plans to offer Read More

Flipboard Gets Huge Update
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Dec 2010 19:31:04 UTC +00:00
Flipboard gets a huge new update that makes it pretty much the focal point of all your social media needs. Flipboard is already considered a must-have iPad app, but now it’s even more irresistible thanks to a massive update. The social media app is now capable of including Google Reader, Flickr and live article previews. Really, what more could you ask for? First up, those using Google Reader will find it to be nearly identical to what their familiar with on their desktop, but with a few minor concessions. You won’t be able to share items with a note, run a search or manage subscriptions, though those features may become available down the road. For now though you can still read through items, star items, share without notes and most of the other familiar Reader features. It’s not an exact duplication of the true experience, but it’s pretty close. Flipboard now Read More

The app will now let you browse your Google Reader folders as well as your friend’s shared items. The app will also allow you to star, share, and comment on stories. by Flipboard, which Apple recently named the iPad app of the year, has released a new edition of its popular social news reader for the tablet device. Now users can browse photos from their Flickr streams and stories from Google Reader as well as items shared by Facebook and Twitter friends, all in Flipboard‘s [iTunes link] signature magazine-style format. In addition, users can also now post Facebook status updates, tweets and photos from anywhere within the app, and they can easily share favorite content across networks (e.g., share a favorite tweet to Facebook and vice versa). It’s also easier to navigate between and zoom in on items shared across these networks. App users can sort through content by looking at shared and starred posts as well as individual folders (though not unread items, unfortunately) on Google Reader as well as favorites, groups and other feeds in Flickr. Apple highlights the best of iTunes in 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 16:45:00 UTC +00:00
Apple has highlighted the best of iTunes from 2010, showing off their picks for the best apps, movies, TV shows and more. There are several categories and many of our favorites made the cut. Here's an overview of the winners. Let's jump right to the fun one -- apps. Apple has created separate categories for iPhone/iPod touch apps and iPad apps, but the big honors went to Hipstamatic, which Apple named "iPhone App of the Year" (also a former TUAW Daily App pick) and the record-breaking Plants vs. Zombies which took home the "iPhone Game of the Year" title. On the iPad side of the store, Flipboard was named the "iPad App of the Year" for 2010, while Cosmos picked up "iPad Game of the Year." From there, Apple breaks down the hot trends in both iPad and iPhone/iPod touch apps. Categories include food and cooking apps, news, stories, apps for Read More

Digital Stripping and the Evolution of Online Publishing

In June 2010, Apple released the latest revision of Safari. Included in the release was a fancy little feature called "Reader" which gives users the ability to view Web content separately from the collective clutter of banner advertising, top lists and social bookmarking widgets. The release marked the first time a browser with real market share shipped with native functionality that provided users with the ability to free themselves of that clutter. What's important is not who is credited with capitalizing on the idea that clean content is easier to read first, but that more and more people are looking for, and finding ways, to get away from the clutter that adorns the margins of so many sites. All this time, we've been referring to Twitter as a social network, and all this time, we've been wrong. That's if you believe Twitter VP Kevin Thau, who presented at Nokia World 2010 today. 3 iPad Apps that Reinvent News Reading
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Sep 2010 15:32:49 UTC +00:00
As news consumption shifts to the personalized social news stream, the platforms we use to consume the news are also changing. With its media-friendly design, the iPad is the first mobile device to create an environment perfect for real-time news consumption that maintains the sophistication and style of traditional print magazines and newspapers. Pulse News, Flipboard and FLUD are three apps paving the way for rich, personalized news experiences on the iPad. Each reinvents what it means to read the news by creating a more dynamic, social and visually stimulating way to consume information. Flipboard and Pulse News are particularly interesting because they both leave it to the user to define the term “news” on their own. They also compel the reader to include their social network friends in the process. Below, we break down all three for a look at how the iPad changes the way we get our news. Read More
New ‘iPad is Delicious’ Ad and Featured Apps

Although we don’t suggest crunching down on a corner of your iPad to check whether Apple’s statement is correct, according to their latest TV advert, the iPad is delicious, playful, productive and a whole lot of other things too.  Rather than using a voiceover to describe what the iPad can do, this ad relies on demonstration instead. The image of hands interacting with the iPad is a strong one, and certainly brings the control system to the forefront, while the chosen apps appeal to a broad range of tastes and ages. Here are the apps featured in the ad: These are all great apps certainly, but aside from Safari that’s used to demonstrate Twitter, and Flipboard, new iPad owners are going to have to splash out for the rest of them, which isn’t very clear in the advert and could prove somewhat disappointing to the new buyer.  Or does everyone pretty Read More

With the release of the iPad, one idea came to a lot of user’s heads all at once: This thing would make an awesome eReader for Magazines. There were many of us that secretly wished major magazines would explore new ways to show their content. We’d seen demos of magazines and then finally, a few released their visions to the world. While these magazines are awesome and definitely the future of how we consume content, Flipboard has taken this concept to a new level. The app itself acts more like an Feed Reader by taking different blogs and sites and organizing them for you. But perhaps the most interesting feature of the app is how it allows you to interact with your content. [iPad-App] Flipboard

Flipboard is a new iPad app made to turn your beloved tablet computer into a social magazine. It does that by mining the hundreds of millions of web links posted each day on Facebook and Twitter. Your “job” is to enter your Twitter and Facebook logins and let the app do its magic. It will then gather all content (articles, photos and videos) picked out by your online social circle, and diplay it in a magazine format. Yap, that means every day, you’ll be reading something new and different. The next step is to integrated Flipboard with more services, including Flickr and LinkedIn. In case you wonder, Flipboard is a Palo Alto, California-based company founded by Mike McCue, co-founder of voice recognition company Tellme that was later sold to Microsoft; and Evan Doll, a former Apple engineer who worked on the iPhone. McCue apparently started working on the product late last Read More
Flipboard, una revista social para iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Jul 2010 21:48:52 UTC +00:00
Precio: Gratis Read More
Flipboard Buys Ellerdale, Launches Social Digital Magazine

The latest hotness wandering around the blogs is this iPad app called Flipboard, which turns your favorite social network content into an easy-to-read magazine-styled layout. It does look good -- the idea is that pictures and text are all pulled in from various social feeds, and then assembled together by the app to make a full-color, full-featured magazine that you can flip through instead of pulling up various feeds and/or running a bunch of different clients. We saw a similar app at WWDC this year that pulled content from RSS and styled it in a magazine fashion. Personally, I'm not entirely sold -- I have the same problem with this app as I did with RSS readers for a long time, which is that I like to see content in the format it's generated for. If someone likes something or posts a link on Facebook, I'd rather see what it looks Read More
The stealthy Kleiner Perkins-backed startup called Flipboard has now been revealed to be, as some suspected, a social application for the iPad. The new Flipboard iPad app bills itself as a "social magazine" - that is, one which aggregates status updates, tweets, photos and articles from those you're connected to on social networking sites, like Twitter and Facebook. These updates are beautifully laid out into an easily digestible view which you can flip through with your fingers. But Flipboard isn't just another "Twitter magazine," - it also just acquired semantic technology startup Ellerdale, whose intelligent data-parsing algorithms have previously been used to create a real-time search engine and trends tracker (still available here, at least for the moment). Now that same powerful technology will be used to design a more personalized real-time experience: determining what social updates are important to you and presenting them in an attractive, magazine-like format. In May, Read More

By Jeff Scott on July 20th, 2010 Flipboard is yet another new type of news reader for the iPad. This one uses the brain of the crowd to try to determine what's news by gathering popular links and videos from social networks like Twitter and Facebook. Oh yeah, and it's free. Flipboard is billed as the first social magazine. It uses the group brain — or at least the brains on Twitter and Facebook — to figure out what is and isn’t important news. And it’s going to be a huge deal. It determines the news by scanning Twitter and Facebook streams of your choosing — including your personal streams (once you log in), Twitter lists, Facebook groups, etc. to create Flips. These Flips can be around a particular topic or a service as a whole. Beyond the interesting and innovative brains behind the gathering of the content, this app is Read More
