How to Read News on your iOS Device with FLUD
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Dec 2011 17:38:50 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/22/2011 at 9:38am | by Cory Bohon On par with the Kindle, iPad was designed to be the ultimate on-the-go back-lit reading device. What's better: the iPad has opened the doors to exploring new social media options. With FLUD [iTunes link], you can read your favorite feeds and easily share articles with your friends. Read on to find out how. With FLUD, you can easily share articles you're reading with your FLUD followers, or "fllud" their activity feed. Clever, non? To do this, simply tap on the heart button in the toolbar of any article. We'll get more into this a little later. FLUD comes preloaded with several news sources, including The Huffington Post, Mashable, and a few others. To add an additional feed, tap on the "Add Sources" button in the top-right of the app. The Add Sources pop up will appear, allowing you to easily choose a new Read More
You may be familiar with Flud as the news reader app that’s trying to build an appealing alternative to Flipboard and Pulse. Flud launched iOS platform back at the end of 2010 with a heavy focus on design — and a simple user interface. Fast Company even gave Flud the 2010 Design Award of The Year. The startup has since launched its social news sharing app on Android, raised $1 million in seed from Ludlow Ventures, Scott Belsky, and Detroit Venture Partners, and is re-tooling its app for Mango, as Jordan reported last month, for release in January. It’s been off to a great start, but to really offer a service that competes with the big boys, Flud is on a mission to build a personalized news-sharing ecosystem. Today, the startup is adding some important functionality into its app in an effort to do just that, as Flud 2.0 now allows Read More

If you’ve been paying attention this morning, you’re perhaps somewhat aware of a program Microsoft has in place called Mobile Acceleration Week (part of its BizSpark program), where 12 hand-picked startups can access hands-on support and training to build compelling apps for the Windows Phone platform. MAWs happen all over the world all year long, but I was lucky enough to catch up with some of the participants of New York’s Mobile Acceleration Week, and was pretty pleased with the apps I saw. Microsoft gives each startup 60 days to push the app to market, so don’t get too excited and start hunting through the Marketplace. You won’t find what you’re looking for just yet. But considering that today’s theme (at least in my world) seems to be the state of Redmond’s mobile app platform, I thought it’d be worthwhile to give you a look at where the Marketplace is headed, Read More

The latest social magazine iPad app to hit the market is NewsMix, a $2.99 app that does much the same thing as the increasingly popular Flipboard. So how much chance does NewsMix have to usurp Flipboard? It's the same chance that online RSS Readers had of usurping Bloglines back in 2004-05, when Bloglines was first to market with a new type of news reading product. Virtually nil. Just as Bloglines was the first browser-based RSS Reader to gain traction, Flipboard was the first magazine-style iPad reader to gain a following in 2010. Bloglines became the dominant RSS Reader in 2004-05, mostly because it was first to market with a decent product and it scaled well. OK, Bloglines eventually lost the plot when it got acquired by Ask.com and allowed Google Reader to usurp it. The same fate may occur to Flipboard, if/when it gets acquired. But one thing's for sure, it Read More
Twenty Apps You Need for Your New iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Dec 2010 17:46:34 UTC +00:00
Yesterday we suggested twenty apps to download for your new iPhone, but what if you received an iPad for Christmas?  You’ll be needing this list, than!  Here are twenty recommended iPad apps and although there are some repeat apps from the iPhone list, there are plenty of new suggestions too. As before, the first ten should be considered ‘must-haves’, while the second ten depend more on what you want to do with your iPad.  Here we go: For All Users: A Little More Specific: That’s it!  We hope these inspire you to explore what your new iPad can do, as there are so many great apps available.  Don’t forget, there are many alternatives to the ones we’ve mentioned, so don’t be afraid to search the App Store. Also, if you existing iPad owners have a favorite app that you’d recommend for new owners, tell us about it in the comments! Read More
News aggregators and RSS feeds have been around for awhile now, but only with the rapid proliferation of touch technology on mobile devices and tablets, have we started moving closer to a truly appealing news feed experience. For the average web user, the traditional staid design and text-and-headline-heavy interface of the RSS feed and feed aggregators have offered user experiences to be endured rather than enjoyed. News apps for both the iPhone and iPad, like Pulse and Flipboard, have garnered quite a bit of attention of late for disrupting the aggregation and RSS reader experience by offering up new, intriguing ways of representing data. With interactive and clever designs that leave templates open enough to allow users to fill them with their own feeds and customized content, the publishing industry seems exciting again. The success of these apps is largely due to the fact that developers are learning that a good Read More

3 iPad Apps that Reinvent News Reading
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Sep 2010 15:32:49 UTC +00:00
As news consumption shifts to the personalized social news stream, the platforms we use to consume the news are also changing. With its media-friendly design, the iPad is the first mobile device to create an environment perfect for real-time news consumption that maintains the sophistication and style of traditional print magazines and newspapers. Pulse News, Flipboard and FLUD are three apps paving the way for rich, personalized news experiences on the iPad. Each reinvents what it means to read the news by creating a more dynamic, social and visually stimulating way to consume information. Flipboard and Pulse News are particularly interesting because they both leave it to the user to define the term “news” on their own. They also compel the reader to include their social network friends in the process. Below, we break down all three for a look at how the iPad changes the way we get our news. Read More
