But there are other mobile apps that do all of those things. Now Fring is getting ready to launch a new feature that will really make it stand out in the mobile space: group video calling. While I was mulling over the Samsung Galaxy S reviewing its features and beefy hardware, one aspect I was never able to explore was video calling via the front-facing camera found on the international version of the phone. Not knowing anyone else with a Galaxy S I turned to fring in attempts to set up video calls to friends with the EVO 4G and iPhone 4. No dice. Only the rear camera was working properly. I am happy now to report that fring has updated their Android app bringing support for the front-facing camera on the Galaxy S along with overall improved call quality. Fring announced today that the latest version of the phone has been updated to improve quality and support for new phones. The Samsung Galaxy S now supports video calling using the front-facing camera. While the Samsung Epic for Sprint will be the only Galaxy S device in the U.S. with a front-facing camera, the international version of the device works with Fring right now. WTF, Skype? Just days after everyone gets excited about Fring allowing cross-platform video calls and I go through the trouble of showing people how to set it up, you decide to block Fring? Not cool, bro. Fring announced today that Skype has blocked the company from accessing its network, ending more than four years of connectivity between Fring and Skype. The influx of iPhone users last Friday forced Fring to temporarily take down Skype support in order to increase its network capacity. However, Skype will not permit Fring to turn back-on support, a move that Fring has called “cowardly.” (I’m checking with my sources to see if Dan Gilbert ghostwrote the announcement).
