Cat Plays 'Fruit Ninja', is Basically Better than Me
Calendar16 Thu, 29 Dec 2011 19:19:34 UTC +00:00
With the holiday season upon us and the iTunes freeze halting any new games or updates from popping up, there's been a severe lack of hard hitting iOS news to post about this week. So, with that in mind, we're going to do what any self respecting website would do during a dry spell – post a cute cat video from YouTube. Everybody knows that cats are the dominating force of the internet, but in this instance, there is actually some relevance to what we do here at TouchArcade. As pointed out by Halbrick on their Twitter, some crazy cat owner has gone and taught their furry feline friend how to play Fruit Ninja. A cat owner after my own heart, really. Check it out: So here's the thing: I actually think this cat might be better than I am at Fruit Ninja. I mean, sure, I've achieved higher scores than Read More
Last-Minute Gift Guide 2011: iOS Apps
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Dec 2011 19:06:00 UTC +00:00
Looking for a quick last-minute gift? Not feeling up to fighting the holiday traffic, crowds and checkout lines? Just too lazy busy to shop? Then you may want to consider giving the gift of an iOS app. You can gift any paid app from iTunes on your computer or from the app’s description page on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Just scroll down past the screenshot and look for the “gift this app” button. All you’ll need is the recipient’s email address to complete the transaction. This app list includes both new releases and old favorites. It’s entirely subjective! Note that some of this year’s best apps are free, so they aren’t on here. (Waving to Instagram, Path, Spotify, Flipboard, Pinterest, HBO GO, etc.) Also, everyone already has Angry Birds (the original). It’s not on here, either. 1. iMovie ($4.99) Everyone should have this app from Apple, the fun moviemaking app for Read More

Angry Birds can't have all the fun, right? Halfbrick Studios is set to embrace the iOS marketing frenzy by releasing a pair Fruit Ninja plush toys. The sensei and a smiling (or is that sliced?) watermelon in a branded headband will introduce the series. The sensei is available right now on the company's web store for US$15.99, while the watermelon will be available "soon" for just a buck less. I have to admit, these are pretty darn cute. Halfbrick Studios is not only a talented set of game designers, but a really nice group of folks as well. Does this mean we'll soon be getting a Jetpack Backpack from Jetpack Joyride? I don't know how cuddly a sliced watermelon is, but Fruit Ninja is a great game, and I wouldn't mind having one of these guys under my tree come this holiday season. Read More

iPhone Games in Real Life [Video]

If you’re a small band looking to get some attention, what better idea than releasing a music video featuring some of the most popular games for iPhone? Australian band Hey Geronimo understands that shooting a video featuring some of our favorite games, namely Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Flight Control, and Fruit Ninja, is always a sure hit with iOS geeks like us, especially when you bring those games to life… The music is actually pretty good, too! Halfbrick To Start A New Office
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Oct 2011 20:30:06 UTC +00:00
Fruit Ninja [$.99 / HD / Lite] developer Halfbrick is expanding, apparently. Gamasutra recently spotted a job listing from the Australian outfit indicating that it’s looking for full-time design, art, and programmer types to start “its exciting new Sydney office” and develop social, mobile, and digital games. Halfbrick proper, which is also home to Phil Larsen’s School For The Marketing Gifted, is located in Brisbane. Since it’s founding in 2001, Halfbrick has churned out a lot of hits with us. Fruit Ninja is certainly one of those, but we’re also pretty big fans of Monster Dash [$.99], Jetpack Joyride [$.99], and Age of Zombies [$2.99 / Lite]. Soon, it’ll roll out a special version of Fruit Ninja with a Puss in Boots tie-in that we’re pretty sure will rock despite its licensed-ness. It’s a pretty tumultuous time in the industry in general right now, so it’s refreshing to finally hear about Read More
Daily iPhone App: Jetpack Joyride
Calendar16 Thu, 01 Sep 2011 13:00:00 UTC +00:00
After a few conventions' worth of teasing and a last-minute name change, Halfbrick Studios' latest, Jetpack Joyride, is available as a universal app for iPhone and iPad. I'm ready to call it one of the best iOS games of the year. Of course, I'm a big Halfbrick fan, and I think the running title Monster Dash is their best game until this one (though Fruit Ninja obviously racks up some points for them as well), so this game ends up being particularly up my alley. But it's really a terrific game -- extremely well polished, with great mechanics, tons and tons of replayability, and pretty much everything you'd want in a pick-up-and-play iPhone title. The idea is that you're Halfbrick's main man Barry Steakfries yet again, this time strapping on a Machine Gun Jetpack to try and escape through a lab, and you need to get as far as possible without Read More

Make Fresh Sushi in the Upcoming 'Ninja Fishing'
Calendar16 Tue, 19 Jul 2011 11:01:46 UTC +00:00
Gamenauts, creators of an iOS title we liked very much called Stickbound [Free], have released a video for their newest project called Ninja Fishing. Basically, it takes the novel slicing gameplay of Fruit Ninja [99¢] and couples it with... fishing. It may sound like a pretty strange premise, but after watching the trailer I actually think it looks pretty intriguing. You’ll use tilt to control a fishing line as it lowers into the depths of the water, hooking fish along the way. Then, as you reel them up and above the surface, they are flung into the air where you must quickly slice 'em and dice 'em with your katana, Fruit Ninja style. The key to success in Ninja Fishing is getting your line as deep as possible into the water before it hooks a fish and begins its ascent, giving you more time to hook additional fish on the way Read More
Back in March, I felt luckier than a field of four leaf clovers when I was among the first to see Fruit Ninja [$.99 / HD] creator Halfbrick’s latest side-scrolling title, Machinegun Jetpack. It’s a mix of infinite runner and shooter like [$.99 / HD]. Heck, it even stars that game’s hero, Barry Streakfries. Where it departs is where it draws its namesake: during the entirety of the experience, you’ll be strapped to a jetpack that spews bullets. Back at the event in San Francisco that March, I was told that the game should have been out about... well, right now. I have an update on that: Halfbrick says that the target is now late August, and it’ll definitely hit within the next two months. The team inside Halfbrick on the game is doing a final critical pass, adding in features and tweaking the existing ones for the best possible experience. Read More
Fruit Ninja has gotten a new update adding the pomegranate, a fruit that can be sliced multiple times, to both the iPhone and iPad versions of the game. Fourteen months after it first hit iOS, it’s clear that ninjas still hate fruit, and people love to help slice those dastardly fruits. Now, budding ninjas and fruit haters alike can destroy a new fruit in a new update for Fruit Ninja. The pomegranate, the chosen fruit of the Olympian gods, is now available to slice up in Fruit Ninja. This isn’t just some random fruit to slice up, oh no. This godly fruit will show up at the end of Arcade mode, and periodically in Classic mode, with the goal being to slice it as many times as possible in a short period of time. The fruit does not appear in Zen mode, as Halfbrick did not believe it to be a Read More

Fruit Ninja HD On Sale For $0.99 This Weekend
Calendar16 Fri, 20 May 2011 15:53:37 UTC +00:00
I received an e-mail from Halfbrick Studios announcing that Fruit Ninja HD, the blown up, extra juicy version of Fruit Ninja for iPhone ($0.99; review), is on sale this weekend for a dollar. If you think about it, it’s actually a fantastic deal and much cheaper than going out and slicing real fruit (but don’t think about it too hard). I’ve been, err, testing the app this morning to make sure that it works as smoothly as it does on the iPhone, and have concluded that this is one of those titles that gets way better on the iPad: the extra space is used to make all of the gameplay elements larger, which simply makes the whole game easier and more enjoyable to play. I’m not terribly sure that the giganto graphics and split-screen multiplayer mode are worth that much more than the iPhone version at regular price, though, so if you’ve Read More
Fruit Ninja gets its t-shirts
Calendar16 Tue, 19 Apr 2011 10:12:54 UTC +00:00
Angry Birds is arguably the best-known iOS title to go beyond mobile screen with the franchise extending to shirts, plush toys, animated series and even a board game. Fruit Ninja is catching up and for a start, Halfbrick Studios (the company behind the popular game) licensed its iProduct for t-shirts. Licensing agent HAP Consulting acted as an intermediary between the Fruit Ninja maker and the clothing store Hot Topic, making a total of four shirts available. These shirts feature slogans like “slicing fruit like a boss!”, “I (heart) Sensei” and “Fruit Ninja addict!” It is said that more shirts will be available in due course. Each shirt costs about $20, depending on the size you need. I’m not sure I would go for it, but such shirts definitely make for an awesome gift, especially if you’re buying something for an Apple fan boy/girl. So what do you say? Care to spend Read More

GDC 2011: Halfbrick's Machine Gun Jetpack
Calendar16 Wed, 02 Mar 2011 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Halfbrick Studios is one of my favorite developers on iOS. While they've released games on other platforms before (including the PS3 and the Nintendo DS), here at GDC 2011, they told me that "iOS development is always our focus." They've found a huge hit with Fruit Ninja, but they're not resting on their laurels. Fresh off Monster Dash (my favorite Canabalt-alike on the App Store) Halfbrick is going to return to the running genre with a new game called Machine Gun Jetpack. If you've played Monster Dash, you'll know that's one of the special weapons from the game -- a machine gun pointed down that allows you to hover in the air. And the Machine Gun Jetpack game lets you do just that. As hero Barry Steakfries runs along, he has to jump up and hover past obstacles and enemies, adding a vertical component to the Canabalt setup. Just like Monster Read More
GDC 2011: 'Machinegun Jetpack' Is As Cool As It Sounds
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Mar 2011 22:10:43 UTC +00:00
Halfbrick, the studio behind the enormously popular fruit homicide game, Fruit Ninja [.99 / Lite], are about three months away from debuting a brand new title on the App Store. And there’s a twist: it stars a familiar face, Monster Dash’s [.99] Barry Steakfries. Actually, Steakfries and Monster Dash are great starting points when describing this upcoming title, Machinegun Jetpack. It looks and works a lot like Monster Dash. It’s a traditional runner, so it has a lone, endless level and randomly generated content. Where it differs, it really differs. Instead of controlling a protagonist who can merely run, you control an avatar that’s hooked into a jetpack. Tapping on the screen keeps Barry afloat, and you’ll need to do that to avoid all the vertical obstacles such as electricity or rockets or lasers. Ratcheting up the intensity of the experience is a goal of Halfbrick’s. Perhaps the best example of Read More

Two of TUAW's favorite App Store apps (and probably yours as well) have been updated with new content. Halfbrick's Fruit Ninja has a few new swords to play with, including one that plays piano music as you swipe. There are new leaderboards to fight your friends (and everyone else) on for the Classic and Zen modes. Great free update for a terrific app -- no wonder it's sold 6 million copies (inspiring Halfbrick to build up an orchard in order to pay back karma for all that destroyed virtual fruit). Imangi's great Max Adventure dual-stick shooter has also been updated with a new survival level and a few performance improvements and bug fixes. More importantly, it's on sale right now for just 99 cents, so if you haven't grabbed this one yet, now's your chance. I just picked it up again recently, and despite the kid-friendly graphics and storyline, the action Read More
Fruit Ninja, $0.99 Fruit Ninja has been one of the most well-supported games in the entire App Store, and has lived a long healthy life at the top of the paid charts because of it. Today, both the iPhone and iPad versions of Fruit Ninja received yet another update which adds even more content to the game. There are now 5 new blades to unlock in the Dojo, which are described as follows by Halfbrick themselves: SHADOW BLADE – This super sweet blade was forged in darkness, void of all good. PIXEL BLADE – Show how cool you really are with a blade that harks back to the days of 8-bit gaming. BAMBOO SHOOT BLADE – Made in the forest that Sensei himself grew up in, this is one awesome blade that is bound to impress! PARTY TIME BLADE – Every swipe will feel like you’re partying like it’s 1999. PIANO Read More
Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick is celebrating 6 million downloads in a very unique manner. Halfbrick, the developer behind Fruit Ninja, has reason to be proud. The fast-paced fruit-slicing game has won many hearts. Our own Carter Dotson, reviewing the HD version, wrote that “The game is simple and addictive. It’s the kind of basic mechanic anyone can pick up and enjoy in seconds, and keep playing for hours, especially in Zen mode, where the quest for high scores can keep you playing for long periods of time.” Fruit Ninja has apparently won over App Store customers as well, and is now celebrating its 6 millionth sale. But how exactly should Halfbrick celebrate? Apparently, they want to make amends. Luke Muscat, lead designer of Fruit Ninja, remarks that without growing fruit, there won’t be any more fruit to slice! The press release continues: To celebrate the sales and make amends for fruit Read More

Veggie Samurai iPhone App Review
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Dec 2010 13:00:07 UTC +00:00
Veggie Samurai created by QuantumSquid Interactive, is a slice and dice upgrade from the popular Fruit Ninja game. While the name is almost a blatant rip off (e.g. does iPed ring any bells?), that’s as far as it goes because it brings a lot of fun and uniqueness to the table. This game is all about slicing vegetables and Veggie Samurai offers 6 chaotic modes Samurai, Hardcore, Harmony, Chaos, Sort, and Match modes. The first game mode has 3 similar styles. Samurai mode will throw vegetables and poison vials in the air. You will have three uncut vegetable drops, 3 broken poison vials or a mixture of the two before it’s game over. Chaos mode is similar to Samurai except that the speed is twice or three times as fast. And Hardcore mode will give you no second chances before the game is over… Harmony mode will give you two minutes Read More
Fruit Ninja Lite, Free - One of the standout developers of 2010 was Halfbrick Studios, and with the year coming to a close they have some newsworthy items to end on a high note with. Back in April, they released Fruit Ninja [99¢] to the App Store and it quickly shot up to the top of the charts and has remained at a relatively high position ever since. There is something strangely appealing about slicing up fruit on a touch screen, and the game was a completely unique idea and a novel use of the device's strengths. A few months later an iPad version was launched, Fruit Ninja HD [99¢], which added a fun same-device multiplayer mode and a larger play area. Many of us already own Fruit Ninja, but if you're one of the few who never understood what the fuss was about, and weren't about to spend the money Read More

One of Halfbrick‘s first iOS title, Fruit Ninja, has certainly been getting a lot of love from the developer that’s been adding a ton of new content to the game lately. A couple of weeks ago, they released an update that allows for multiplayer games over Game Center, as well as full support for Game Center with leaderboards and achievements. Now Halfbrick has added a completely new mode to Fruit Ninja that takes the well known gameplay mechanic of slicing up fruit, and puts a spin on it. The new mode for Fruit Ninja is called “Arcade Mode” and what it does is it has players playing for exactly 60 seconds to achieve the highest score possible. The mode is a departure from the classic Fruit Ninja mode as it relies on time rather than possibly slicing a bomb to end the game.  Arcade Mode throws in a few bonus colored Read More

Fruit Ninja Gets Arcade Mode
Calendar16 Mon, 08 Nov 2010 16:30:19 UTC +00:00
Halfbrick's already stellar game gets a brand new mode to keep you coming back for more. Fruit Ninja has consistently been one of the best-selling and most beloved gaming apps available on the iTunes Store, and now this super-entertaining game has gotten even more addictive with the addition of a brand new mode. The game, both in standard and iPad HD varieties is getting support for a brand-new Arcade mode, which looks to be highly entertaining. Among the new features included are: Double Points – This banana will award you double points for a short period of time. Criticals and combos count too, so rack up those fruit for some massive scores! Frenzy – If you’re not content with the amount of fruit on screen, the Frenzy banana will take care of that. A mammoth amount of fruit will begin flying in, but you have to stay focused to slice it Read More
Fruit Ninja’s Arcade Mode is here!
Calendar16 Fri, 05 Nov 2010 15:42:54 UTC +00:00
If you own a copy of Fruit Ninja ($0.99 on iPhone, $4.99 on iPad) or can steal the iOS device of someone who does, you owe it to yourself to try the new update out, especially for the new game mode. Arcade mode provides you with one minute to rack up a high score (as opposed to Zen Mode’s 90 seconds). There are also bombs on-screen, but, unlike in Normal Mode, hitting them will subtract 10 points from your score instead of insta-gibbing you. The best parts of this whole update, however, are the new banana power-ups that you can slice and dice for temporary benefits. One banana slows down time (Banana time!), one throws extra fruits onto the screen (Bananarama!), and the final one temporarily doubles your scoring capability (banana banana!). I dare say this is the best update to Fruit Ninja thus far, and it makes for a great Read More

Look forward to seeing the new mode early this November. Read More
Quick Look: Age of Zombies for iPhone and iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 28 Oct 2010 22:03:02 UTC +00:00
Age of Zombies ($2.99) is the newest universal app from Halfbrick Studios, makers of the big splash hit, Fruit Ninja. AoZ is very much your standard dual stick shooter: you’ll take control of wannabe action star, Barry Steakfries, as he shoots and asplodes his way through zombies in five different time periods. I’ve spent about an hour with the iPhone version and can attest to there being a lot of gory action, but most everything else in this game falls on its face (and doesn’t really get up again). Barry Steakfries One of the things that irks me most about Age of Zombies is the protagonist, Barry Steakfries. I get that he’s supposed to be filled with cheesy one-liners, but that only works if you stick to the same kind of cheese all throughout. A lot of what Barry says sounds like it was picked at random and then stuffed into Read More

Löblich: Von beiden Spielereien existieren kostenfreie Testversionen (iPad / iPhone). Kopfzerbrechen bereitet diese App-Store-Investition, bei der liebevollen Gameplay-, Grafik- und Sound-Schöpfung, jedoch Read More
Fruit Ninja for iPhone hits 2 million downloads milestone!
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Sep 2010 05:04:05 UTC +00:00
Fruit Ninja is joining the likes of Flight Simulator, Doodle Jump, Pocket God and Angry Birds to become one of the most popular games for the iOS devices. As a matter of fact, Halfbrick (the company behind Fruit Ninja) announced that its popular title has been downloaded (that’s actually sold) by more than 2 million people. To mark the occasion, they’ve shared some cool Fruit Ninja facts. For instance, did you know that ninjas have sliced 24,342,983,809 fruit worldwide which is more than four billion fruit? In other words, that about 10 million tons of sweet stuff. Awesome! For the record, it took 74 days to hit the first million Fruit Ninja downloads, and only a further 78 for the second million. Sweet. Yap, you want to get your “slice” of the action, too. To jump on board and start hitting those vitamin-rich stuff, click on the link below. You won’t Read More
One of the big selling points Apple promised with Game Center when it released was the ability to play online multiplayer games either against our friends or anyone else through matchmaking. Game Center has been available through the iOS 4.1 update for 2 weeks now, but game developers are still playing catch up supporting all of Game Center’s features (achievements, leaderboards, & online multiplayer gaming to be exact.) Halfbrick is one of the first developers to finally take advantage of the biggest selling point to Game Center: Online multiplayer games! Halfbrick’s Fruit Ninja has just received an update which will allow players to challenge other iPhone wielding wannabe ninjas to a head-to-head battle online to see who can slice up more fruit. Each player will have their own colored fruit to slice. Fruit highlighted in blue is fruit you can slice up and doing so will allow you to score, while Read More

Monster Dash hits the App Store

Halfbrick Studios, the devs behind the popular Fruit Ninja ($0.99, review here), are switching gears a bit in their latest title. Instead of completely harmless fruit slashing action, Monster Dash is a manic Canabalt-like side scroller with guns and mummies and vampires and demons and…well, you get the picture. Once you have processed, Photoshopped, and printed the picture out, you can then get the game for $0.99 on the App Store right now. Read More

Su funcionamiento es tan sencillo como deslizar el dedo por la pantalla cual katana, para ir cortando en dos las frutas que van apareciendo. The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year
Calendar16 Sat, 07 Aug 2010 18:12:54 UTC +00:00
Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that Read More

Some are better than others. But today, Appman (the name is fitting) is showing us what he, and others, have decided are the most addictive games out there; considering the hundreds of thousands of apps in the App Store, that’s a pretty big title. What games has he chosen to receive this honor? Angry Birds, Danger Dodgeball, and Fruit Ninja. Read on for the full reviews! So, do you agree? Have another suggestion? Fruit Ninja

I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t enjoy some sort of fruit and it is definitely common knowledge that ninjas are way cooler than pirates. So some developer got it in their head to combine the two concepts into one ridiculously addicting casual game. Fruit Ninja is a game that challenges the player to slice as much fruit as they can as it is launched into view. To do this, the player just swipes a finger across the screen which will cut into the fruit. But you need to be careful though as the game will randomly throw bombs into the mix which will end the round. Also, if you miss three fruits, you will get strikes against you and lose. The game ends up being a fun way to pass some time on your phone and offers some addicting challenges. It’s optimized for the iPhone 4 screen and the Read More
Fruit Ninja for iPhone- app review
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Jul 2010 15:47:43 UTC +00:00
By Chad Garrett, Tuesday, Jul 13, 2010 | My latest favorite iPhone game is Fruit Ninja. The premise of Fruit Ninja is simple; slice fruit, don’t miss any and don’t slice a bomb by mistake. Sound easy? Think again grasshopper! After beginning a game, fruit flies up from the bottom of the screen. You use your finger (or fingers) to slice the fruit. If a fruit falls back off the screen without being sliced, you receive an X. Three X’s and it’s game over. To make things interesting, bombs are thrown into the mix as well. So, not only are you trying to slice a lot of fruit coming at you and not missing any, you have bombs that shoot up as well. The challenge is, if you slice the bomb, it’s instant game-over. When it comes to difficulty with this game, it is a nice and smooth curve. The issue Read More
Fruit Ninja HD gets a trailer and release date
Calendar16 Mon, 12 Jul 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
We posted about Fruit Ninja way back when it was first released on the App Store, and since then it's become a qualified hit on the iPhone, with over a million downloads and lots and lots of kiwis and bananas slashed in half. The folks over at Halfbrick have now announced that they're bringing the game to the iPad with Fruit Ninja HD, and you can see the trailer above. The game has updated graphics, of course, and it will also include multiplayer modes -- both Classic mode, and something called Zen Duel. Additionally, you'll be able to multitouch with up to eight fingers at a time, there will be multiple blades and backgrounds to play with, and Halfbrick says that the iPad version will enjoy updates right alongside the iPhone version, with more modes, items, and surprises coming in the future. Sounds good. The game is due out this Wednesday Read More

So You Just Got an iPhone 4 – An App Store Gaming Guide

If you're one of the lucky ones you managed to secure themselves an iPhone 4 today (or even the past two days if you're really lucky) you've no doubt marveled at how thin it is, how crisp the Retina Display is, and maybe you've even found someone else to do a FaceTime call with... but what about loading it up with some games? Since we haven't gotten our own iPhone 4's yet, we haven't really been able to put together a "games that are really awesome on the iPhone 4" listing, but I figured we'd start out by compiling a list of some of our favorite games in the App Store. If you think this looks a lot like our 2009 Buyer's Guide, that's because it does. However, we've updated the list with some of our recent favorites and kept some of the old ones. App Review: Fruit Ninja ($0.99)

It’s not very often that you come across an iPhone game that just blows you away, Fruit Ninja is such a game. Like many iPhone games, the beauty of Fruit Ninja comes not from its advanced concept or play style, but instead from its simplicity and originality. The purpose of the game is pretty basic: use your finger to cut as much flying fruit as you can without accidentally cutting any of the bombs. Apart from its unique concept and simplicity, Fruit Ninja’s graphics and interface can’t be beat. To navigate to a different game type, you simply slash an on-screen piece of fruit in the menu. The game is snappy and responsive, two things that I think are a necessary component of any iPhone game, or for that matter, application in general. In recent months, Fruit Ninja has been my “go-to iPhone game.” By this, I mean that whenever I Read More

Halfbrick Studios, the devs from down under, have been hard at work on Fruit Ninja (review here). Not only do they have a ridiculous new trailer to share, but they’ve also released the game’s biggest update thus far. Limes and Red Apples are now on the kill list, and slicing multiple fruit with one slice can now score you combo points. This simple change to the mechanics makes the game a lot deeper, forcing you to wait a few precious seconds for fruits to line up just right. The last addition in this patch is Zen Mode, which is a new game type that lasts only 90 seconds, but is completely free of bombs and lives. All you do in Zen Mode is slice, and it’s a great way to practice how to rack up combo points. If you haven’t tried the game yet, Fruit Ninja is still available for just Read More
'Fruit Ninja' Gets a Big Update
Calendar16 Fri, 21 May 2010 19:47:19 UTC +00:00
Fruit Ninja developer Halfbrick seems to have something fun up its sleeves for the iPad platform, but that doesn't mean the studio has bid adieu to the iPhone. The studio's Apple handheld title Fruit Ninja [99¢] has received a substantial content update -- one that Halfbrick reckons doubles the content from the original release of the game. "Zen Mode" is one of the update additions, ushering in a timed no-bombs, no-lives romp. It's apparently a gift for those who have mastered the fine art of fruit slicing, which is something that I have yet to do. But if I were any good at the game, I'd receive a "combo award" at the tail end of Zen Mode. This award is another new feature that, essentially, displays someone's best combos at the conclusion of the new mode and presents some sort of "award" (barring they have any fine, fruit-slaughtering motor skills). Blast Off, Rocket Racing, and Echoes; these are a few of the games created thus far by Halfbrick Studios. By even taking the smallest glimpse at the Aussie-based developer's portfolio, you'll notice that the studio isn't married to a specific digital platform. Yet its latest title, a simple and entertaining slasher called Fruit Ninja [99¢], gives us the impression that the iPhone is as good of a place as any for Halfbrick's oftentimes irreverent titles. But here are with monstrous iPads. To say we hunger for high-quality, visually stunning titles for the device is an understatement. Luckily, it looks like Halfbrick might fill our tummies with our own desires -- and it could be with a title we're already familiar with, like Fruit Ninja. "We certainly have," Halfbrick's Phil Larson told Touch Arcade when asked about the possibility of ever releasing Fruit Ninja -- or Blast Off -- on the iPad, Read More
Fruit Ninja Review: Highly Delectable Casual Game!

May 10th, 2010 James Isabel If the looks of this game don’t make you want to eat some fruit, I don’t know what will. Mind you! If you buy this game, it’s just not the graphics you’ll be clamoring for. I’m always a sucker for smaller serving iPhone games where you can choose to play them if you’ve a quick 5 minutes or so. This game proves exactly why casual games OWN hardcore iPhone games sometimes. This is deliciously perfect! Presentation The game’s design is pretty impeccable. You see 3D fruits all around (there’s even a special one for OpenFeint), and the juice splatter spilled on the wooden board background is pretty cool. Without kidding, I always get hungry from some real fruits whenever I pick up and play this game. Controls Slash across the screen to literally slash the fruits. Powerful slashes and some combos should give you higher scores. Read More

The only things that ninjas hate more than pirates are fruits, and Fruit Ninja is all about letting you in on their hatred. I think the simple slicing and dicing mechanics are the perfect blend of violence and vitamins, but don’t tell the ninjas that: they’d be so pissed if they realized I was playing this on an Apple device. There’s Juice Everywhere! The game itself is quite simple: fruits are tossed onto the screen and you swipe your finger across them to slice the bastards in half. Watermelons and other juicy fruits positively explode with juice (except for bananas — stupid bananas), and the game even takes the angle of your slice into account, so you’ll see fruits fall apart in the appropriate way. You can actually “slash” with most any kind of gesture, but short, quick slashes are the most fun by far. In a rather cute extension of Read More
Hands-on with Fruit Ninja for the iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Apr 2010 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
Halfbrick Studios is an Australian game developer that's done a few licensed games on other platforms before along with the App Store title Blast Off, and they're back on the iPhone today with Fruit Ninja, a simple-but-fun arcade game that has you hacking fruit in half on the iPhone's touchscreen. The game just went live on the App Store moments ago. We at TUAW got a chance to play the game early, and our exclusive hands-on review is after the break. Fruit Ninja is simple but polished -- while the game mechanic is well done and well-supported with excellent graphics and sound, the gameplay itself is almost too shallow to support the rest of the design. The game's only 99 cents, and there's definitely 99 cents of entertainment here, but I wish there was even more. The game's absurd premise is that ninjas hate fruit, and the idea is that it's Read More
