5 iPhone apps for hiking

Now that the weather is cooling down here in the States, it's time to spend some time outdoors. I love a good hike, and they're made even more enjoyable with a good app by my side. Track distance, brag about your workout or even find a hidden "treasure" during your excursion with these apps. Have fun (all prices are USD). iMapMyHIKE (Free lite version, $1.99 pro) I used iMapMyHIKE all summer. When you start out, launch the app and note your location. As you move, the app tracks your course. It's fun to see where you've traveled as well as build a real-time map back to your starting point, should you get confused. Of course, that's just the beginning. You can share your hiking stats with friends (like distance travelled, pace and so on), spot hiking companions running the app on a map and log your data to keep track of Read More
5 apps for geocaching
Calendar16 Fri, 22 Jul 2011 15:30:00 UTC +00:00
Although I'm much more likely to spend a lovely summer day with my butt glued to the chair working on a new TUAW post, I do enjoy the sport/hobby/game of geocaching. If you're not familiar with the term, geocaching is defined as "a global treasure hunting game where participants locate hidden physical containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share their experience online." When I first started geocaching, smartphones didn't exist so I'd print out a map, grab my Garmin GPS, and head out to the field. For the last few years, there has been a boom in iPhone apps for geocaching. Here are five apps to help you enjoy finding those hidden caches. GroundSpeak is the company that runs the Geocaching.com website, the world's largest repository of geocache location information with over 1,450,000 active caches listed. As a for-profit organization, Groundspeak has a vested interest in getting new members into the Read More
How To Plan the Nerdiest Camping Trip Ever

Posted 06/23/2011 at 2:00pm | by Susie Ochs Some people venture into the outdoors to “unplug.” To leave technology behind…to stop and smell the roses, if you will. And if that’s your thing, that’s great. But some of us are allergic to roses and break out in hives if you try to pry our gadgets out of our hands for a minute, let alone for a whole weekend in the woods. That said, we’re not suggesting that you bring an iMac camping, and thanks to the power of iPhones and iPads, even toting a MacBook Air seems like overkill. With the right case, some portable power, and some other goodies, you and your iDevice along can have a blast in the great outdoors. Geocaching will help you identify nearby geocaches and then lead you right to them. See that blue box in the picture? That represents a geocache, which is a Read More

Safari extension highlight: Better Geocaching
Calendar16 Fri, 06 Aug 2010 18:00:00 UTC +00:00
Although I don't get a chance to do as much geocaching as I'd like to, I still check the Geocaching.com cache maps on occasion to see what's new in the area. Usually, I do this by checking with the US$9.99 Geocaching app, but sometimes I find myself logging into the Geocaching.com website to do my searching. Carlos Fonseca has developed a nice Safari extension that smooths out the rough edges on the Geocaching.com site. Better Geocaching, as the extension is called, adds two features when you're visiting Geocaching.com. First, a click on the View Map link immediately displays a fullscreen map instead of the usual partial page map. The second feature adds a Tweet This button near the cache code on the description page, so you can share your find with friends. The extension is also supposed to revert the map back to normal view by clicking a Better Geocaching button, Read More

As a longtime fan of the pastime of geocaching, I've been following the evolution of the official Groundspeak Geocaching app (US$9.99) since the painful early days. With the release of Geocaching version 4.0 yesterday, it appears that Groundspeak has raised the bar with a new design and additional features. If you're not familiar with geocaching, it's a location-based hobby where you seek caches (usually small containers with a logbook and goodies inside) based on hints, latitude and longitude coordinates, and a keen eye. You can also hide caches for others to find. GroundSpeak has a free Geocaching Intro app available if you're interested in learning about the hobby but don't want to make the $10 investment in the full app. So what's new in Geocaching v.4? A lot. The user interface has been redesigned to make it much more streamlined. I found that actions that formerly took a number of screen Read More

Groundspeak's Geocaching app turns 3.0
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Dec 2009 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
When it's warmer than the current 12°F here in Denver or I'm on a trip somewhere, I love to go geocaching. If you're not familiar with the pastime, geocaching involves using a GPS receiver to find hidden caches that can contain logbooks, "prizes," or even clues to other caches. To find out where a cache is hidden, you need to have an account with Geocaching.com and then search by city or location to see what's near you. The rest is up to your ability to find the cache based on the latitude and longitude provided, as well as clues that may have been supplied by the person who hid the cache, or by other people who have found the cache before you. The company that popularized geocaching is Groundspeak, and they've just released version 3.0 of their self-named Geocaching app [US$9.99, iTunes Link]. Like a fine wine, this app is definitely Read More

Eleven Geocaching iPhone Apps Worth Finding
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Aug 2009 20:00:14 UTC +00:00
The proliferation of handheld GPS units has resulted in a geocaching craze. If you’re not familiar with the sport, here’s the scoop. People venture out with GPS devices and look for containers hidden in the great outdoors by other geocachers. Once found, you jot your name in the logbook, put the container back where you found it, and go find another. Think of it as a pumped-up version of the treasure hunts we used to go on as kids. Since iPhones come equipped with GPS capabilities, it’s no surprise there’s been a recent jump in geocaching apps and tools available in the App Store, many of which nicely complement the open source geocaching apps already available for your computer. There are dozens of iPhone apps to choose from, but here are eleven good ones to get you started. Happy hunting! Geocaching Toolkit iGCT (Free) — There’s lots of calculations involved in Read More

A good start

Like everyone else, I've been anticpating this app ever since Groundspeak put it up on their website. And finally, I saw it was ready for download. I use the iPod Touch so I didn't know if it would do much for me or not. But it does enable me to look up caches anywhere I have WiFi, but then again--I could just use the Touch to go onto geocaching.com and get the same info. However, this downloads all the most important info into the Touch so you can go paperless. Just remember to "save" before turning it off so that it's still there when you're out of WiFi range. So all in all--I think this is well worth the price. And like everyone else, I'll be looking forward to future upgrades.
Extremely Disappointing
Bama Cacher 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was eagerly awaiting this app and downloaded as soon as I could. I was immediately struck by all the things the app can't do. You can't filter out your previous finds. You can't log your finds in the field. You can't use it to plan trips. Geopher lite is much more powerful than this app. The only disadvantage to Geopher is that you have to manually enter the coordinates, but that is because of the restrictions that Groundspeak has placed on that developer.
Absolutely the Best App in the Store
ljmjag 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the killer app. The one that finally makes geocaching available to the masses. Simple, intuitive and shows that a ton of work must have gone into development. If you have never geocached, it is one of the best hobbies that you can participate in with your family. All around you - in every state and around the world, people have hidden treasures for you to hunt, find, log - take a prize and leave one for the next person to find. There are thousands upon thousands of them - but they are hidden from sight. This application lets you participate in on one of the best kept secret unknown hobbies. Not only that, but since you have already bought the phone, the hobby is super inexpensive. Just remember to be discreet and not let the muggles catch you - don't want to ruin the treasures for all of us seekers. I would pay $30 for this application and still not complain for all the hours of entertainment that is now available for my family simply by carrying around my phone.
Nice start, but needs more

Glad to see this application finally show up on the App Store. It is a good start, but it is missing some pretty critical features. For me personally, I would like to see these thre things added for the next revision:
Impressed & Optimistic
AmbBra 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
First off. Great job Groundspeak, you've built a solid app. I look forward to your updates. A few definites I would like to see in the first update would be: - The filters everyone else has been talking about on the cache search. - Logging the find directly from my iPhone. Other than that. Think u done a wonderful job. I was already using Safari & Google Maps to go paperless. This is a big help with the save feature. As for everyone talking about fair play and sharing. Yes the community does place the data on geocaching.com but do you think all that bandwidth and web server functionality is free? I don't blame Groundspeak one bit for wanting to maintain a competitive edge over the competition by not sharing data on THEIR servers. For those that say they have lost respect for Groundspeak about this. You've obviously never owned your own business. It's competitive enough without giving your competition a leg up on you. Just my 2 cents worth.
Way cool! Worth the price
bluemarlinchef24 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been waiting for Groundspeak to get into the iPhone Apps biz. A solid Geocaching App that works well and integrates the geocaching.com site listings nicely. Very simple and easy to use interface. I just wish the iPhone 3G GPS would be more accurate and faster when using a compass. Other than that this App is very nice and fun! Oh yeah! I just sold my Garmin Colorado and will use this App with my iPhone 3G to go geocaching. It is well worth the $9.99 so step up, Get Lost and start caching!
Disappointed, but hopeful
TuxedoKMax 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I, like many others, have been checking the app store daily while waiting for this app to pop up. This was one of my primary reasons for purchasing an iPhone in the first place. I feel like the many shortcomings present in this initial release have been well documented in the other reviews and on the geocaching forums. What I would like to address is Groundspeak's poor sportsmanship. Geopher lite has been out for months now, with constant updates from the creator and lots of communication from the developer by use of his blog. When he approached Groundspeak about obtaining permission to scrape the coordinates for caches he was constantly given the runaround, until finally Groundspeak amazingly decided to launch their own app. Enter the geocaching forums debate. When the new app was first announced, a discussion thread was opened to talk about the app. Any time a person mentioned ANYTHING about another app the moderators came down very hard on them, saying that this was only the place to talk about Groundspeak's app, nobody elses. As if it had already been released and there was no need to compare it to anything else. I'm all for fair competition and everything, and yes, technically Groundspeak does 'own' the cache info stored on their site. I would be willing to bet however that the majority of members of the geocaching community would feel that the information belonged to the community, and being secretive and possesive of it seems to go against the spirit of geocaching. I have great hopes for this app, including the ability to see pictures posted by the creator of a cache, since these are often vital clues. Fix the problems and start to earn back my respect Groundspeak!
Woo Hoo! It's about time!
PokerCop 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love this app. Finally I can cache anytime even when I leave home without my garmin, because my iPhone is ALWAYS with me. Only complaint is the inability to log cache finds. When this is in place, this app will be perfect in my book. Well worth the 10 bucks!!!
Good start, but lacking some key features ...
Lasagna329 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well, this is a good start. I like the interface and while I was initially concerned about not being able to load an offline GPX file, the "save" feature allows picking out the few key caches for a planned run where you might be out of range of a signal. But ... the application doesn't use my identity to allow me to filter out those caches which I've already found (how annoying), it doesn't return "members only caches" (how really annoying and as a member, it makes the app unusable for many caches), it doesn't let me tag a cache as found from the field (extremely handy -- like geocache navigator on BB), and it doesn't let me use a GC-code as the center point for a search (I can search for a specific GC, but such a query returns only the one cache from which I need to read the writeup and re-query with the coordinates). Being able to do the latter, let's you easily target an area distant from you and "save" any caches nearby which might be of interest.
Great app for beginners like me!
Jinsaku 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a newbie geocacher (just been doing it a few days), and this was great for beginners. I do wish there was a way to log your finds *as* you find them, which would make this even more fun, but I'm sure that'll come in an update. Thanks!
Almost there
Mr. Hollick 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
here are some things I cant even imagine they didnt include in the first release like filtering out your hides and finds, I sure dont want to see a list of stuff Ive already found! Or at least there should be a check mark by the listing showing I have found it already. But I think the problem here is it doesnt recognize who you are. Like geopher lite gives you the ability to log in to your geocaching account and it will know who you are.Soon as they add this feature I think this will be the best app ever.
Too COOL
motominister 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is great for us paperless folks. My family is actually excited about this app. I sure am glad I read the little bit about forthcoming updates including logging and previous finds exclusion. I can't wait to try it on the 3G model I'l be buying in a few weeks.
Love it!

Could use a couple more add-ons, but other than that this app runs so smoothly. Very nice for finding caches close bye, and FAST. Hopefully hide some caches before it gets too cold.
Love it!
blocktek 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had stopped Geocaching lately, but back at it today with the new app. Compass was a little erratic, but between that and the map application, we found the simple cache without too much trouble. Felt a little like cheating using the map app though. Loved being able to list nearby caches while we were out and about! Now I can spontaneously Geocache!
Works great
TwoUp 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm not sure if it's because I'm new to this geocaching thing, but I thought this app worked perfect. Found the caches I wanted then used the map to find it. Also read the descriptions and the logs. I think it's a good app.
Great Application
jheyen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well done application. I like the option that if you use the map feature and go back to the application, it keeps your log page. Haven't used the compass to find a cash, but just walking around a little bit, it seems to work well. The ability to filter finds and log caches will be a nice upgrade.

The Geocaching application I have been waiting for is finally here. I tried many of the other geocaching applications that came before this, but none of them reached the level of elegance and polish that can be found here. This is hands down the best geocaching application available - at any price.
Long awaited app

This app is great! It really simplifies the experience for beginners and gives and extra edge for all Geocachers. A great update for this app would be the ability to upload pictures from your iphone about your find. Thanks again!
Thanks Groundspeak!
Team Brown Dog 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Used the app for four hours of geocaching today. Finally a paperless geocaching solution. Allows you to quicklly check hints and recent logs. Great app, it's all I had hoped it would be however I see it as a partner to my Garmin GPS not a replacement. Mapping function would be better if you didn't have to navigate away from the app to Google Maps. The only problem I have encountered is repeated crashes when I try to view caches I have saved. Definitely worth the price.
Great App, suggestion for next version

Fantastic app! Love the interface.
Average caching app
COOP 310 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This apps biggest plus is direct access to the groundspeak database, but aside from that can do little more than other geo-apps. Easy to use but no filter for found caches, which is a bit disappointing. I would also like to see a method for logging finds and increasing the amount of search results via a "next page" button.

no map access offline?
silberz 1.0 stars Version: 2.2
I would give this map 5 stars however with no possibility to save caches' maps for offline access I am left on the trail with no wifi & no carrier so no map. I guess this makes this app pretty much useless. Half a dozen other apps give the possibility to save maps for offline use: why not this one?
Finally! An offical app from Groundspeak!
