Did you find yourself salivating at the massive list of EA sales only to discover that the balance of your iTunes account is 32¢ short of actually being able to buy anything? Well, the weekend is saved thanks to three generous developers! geoDefense, Free - I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about the geoDefense series of games. If you even are vaguely interested in tower defense games, you need to download this one right away. If you like it, make sure to also snag geoDefense Swarm [$1.99 / Lite] Gravity Hook HD, Free - From the makers of Canabalt [$2.99], here's a game that asks you to climb high instead of run far. You can also play the free Flash version online, but I'm not sure why you'd bother when this is also free! GDC 2010: The secret to App Store success
Calendar16 Fri, 12 Mar 2010 03:30:00 UTC +00:00
For the last panel of GDC 2010 day two, David Whatley of Critical Thought took the stage to talk about the App Store success he found with his games geoDefense and geoDefense Swarm, and almost dared other iPhone developers to follow his "guaranteed plan" to go from "zero to Time Magazine." He's got quite a background in the trenches of coding and game development, having designed and run online mulitplayer games for over a decade with his "day job" at a company called Simutronics, but he decided to take to the iPhone in his spare time both to learn the platform and see what he could do with it. First things first, he said, to make an iPhone game, you've got to figure out your goals as a business. He talked about the potential on the iPhone in terms of millions of dollars, but of course, since "99.9% of businesses on Read More
The 53 Best iPhone Games [IPhone Apps]

Scouring the App Store for the best games is a full time job. Luckily, it's a job held by the guys over at Touch Arcade. Here are their picks for the best games—and only games—available on the iPhone. While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is Read More

Published: December 31, 2009 Comment         Welcome to the TouchGen Awards, where we honour the best games that the AppStore offered up to us in 2009. Around this time it’s common for game sites such as ours, to look back through the past year and highlight the best of the best games we’ve played. We have narrowed them down to the following categories and highlighted five of the best in each, and from that picked a winner and runner-up… So without further ado, here are our picks of 2009. With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform Read More

Imangi Studios, the creators of Harbor Master, and Critical Thought Games, the creators of geoDefense Swarm, have teamed up to create an all-new electrically charged matching game titled geoSpark. geoSpark already has a lot going for it.  Not only does it have two great development teams behind it, but it also has a very recognizable and comforting feeling going on.  The game looks to be kind of a mash between Geometry Wars-like graphics, something Critical Though Games obviously has down pat, and Aqua Globs-like gameplay. The idea of the game is to match like ‘Sparks’ by tapping and dragging them into each other.  You can drag multiple Sparks into each other to create chains in order to gain large score bonuses.  But you must be quick and nimble when matching Sparks, because if two unlike Sparks run into each other, the game is over. After a year and a half, TouchArcade is going to start doing something we've never done before: provide numeric ratings for our game reviews (though with a catch). The absence of a rating system at TouchArcade has been a point of contention amongst some of our readers, but was not a decision that we had made lightly. A great number of issues arise with any rating system, the least of which is consistency over time. Rating scores can also blind readers to otherwise good games if they didn't get a near perfect score. There are many advantages, however, including the ability for readers to find the "best" games at a glance. In an effort to bring the best of both worlds, we have decided to start rating games in bulk on a monthly basis and publishing a monthly "Best iPhone Games" column that recaps the best games from the preceding month. 360iDev Game Jam: 10 Hours of Game Development Insanity
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Oct 2009 16:04:17 UTC +00:00
Earlier this week, various iPhone developers all made their way to the 360iDev conference held in Denver, CO to mingle with other developers, as well as participate in educational sessions that covered things like development tips, the business of the iPhone, graphics/sound design, and many other topics. As these developers returned home, many of them posted their thoughts on the conference on their blogs. I've read a lot of great posts, but David of Critical Thought Games (The makers of geoDefense [$1.99] and geoDefense Swarm [99¢]) summed things up nicely on his blog, not only about 360iDev, but also about the wonderful indie-friendly gaming economy Apple has created: What made 360IDev so great was the people. And I'm not just talking about the friends I made there... though that was especially precious. But I'm talking about everyone as a whole. Because what I saw at 360IDev is something I haven't seen Read More
Tuesday Morning App HQ?

By Will on September 29th, 2009 Another installment of MMAHQ, but on Tuesday! Proceed with caution! Random musings of the App Store 2 Billion Apps Served Apple announced recently that over 2 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store. Notable is the timing; this announcement comes only six months after the download of the billionth app, which occurred 9 months after the App Store was launched. This indicated exponential growth of the store. Obviously these numbers are a bit inflated from a developer’s perspective because they seem to include free downloads, but the numbers also indicate that among the user base of 50 million, the average number of apps downloaded is 40, a surprisingly high number. In contrast, the average number of times one of 85,000 apps has been downloaded is only about 2350, hardly a safe bet for business prospects when you consider that most apps are $.99 Read More

#1 without a doubt
Allmynicknamesalreadytaken 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
gameplay, challenge factor, graphics, sounds, all can't be beat. best tower defense game for iPhone/iPod I've ever seen. $1 is beyond a steal. just get it now
Two Words: AWE - SOME!
thinkthis 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
I loved geoDefense. This game was clearly made with the same care and thought that went into making that game so maddeningly difficult, yet so satisfying to beat. This is a MUST BUY at 99 cents! I mean, come on, I've gotten way less joy out of a pack of gum that cost more than this game, and I'll be "chewing" on this one for a lot longer.
Perfection Replicated
@Stwo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Critical Thought Games and David have done it again! Think of this as GeoDefense meets Fieldrunners. The best fixed path TD game and the best open TD game had a love child. The result is a wunderkind offspring. Only a fool would pass this one up!
Worth every penny
tears4fears 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Best 99c spent in the AppStore. Period.
Engaging, exciting and addictive!
PageOneApps 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Finally! The long awaited Swarm is here!
Another great title from my favorite indie developer
Rick Steevz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
I lost sooo much time to the original GEO Defense. After playing a little Swarm, I know it's going to be as addictive. A bargain at 99 cents!
Loved geoDefense. Swarm is more polish on an already outstandingly polished game.
DerbyDragon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
If you liked geoDefense, get swarm. Of course, if you liked geoDefense, you've probably already bought this without thinking twice. The graphics have a bit more shine, the controls have a bit more shine, and you have a hex grid for better precision of tower placement. The biggest difference between Swarm and the original, of course, is the non-linear creep path. Going back to the Tower Defense format popularized by Desktop Tower Defense.
Frustrating and addicting at the same time
gunstinger 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
I think you need to be a hardcore gamer/Tower defense fan to appreciate this game. Why? Because the difficulty ramps up way too quickly, and it just expects you to ramp up along with it. The game itself is beautiful to look at, and has a great variety of levels and tower types, but man, it can be frustrating as heck. Just take level 3 of the "easy missions" - it's far from easy. And this happens frequently. If you make it through the frustrating levels, it gets fun again, but you really need to have a high tolerance for "Are you kidding me?" type phone-throwing frustration
Awesome game, but leaves you in the dark...
Hash Slinging Slasher 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
The graphics are awesome, the sound is awesome, everything is awesome except...
Way to hard
Lostsoul2525 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
First game was good, but there's not enough money to do make it past some of the easy levels? I'm not a rookie at this but damn. Where's my easy button
Great gameplay, but graphics are very hard for the eyes
drgeos 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
This is one of the best games, if you like tower defense games - you SHOULD HAVE it. The only complain is about the graphics/visuals - the explosion effects are way too much/ intensive. If you play for more then 20 min (which is not hard at all, having in mind the great gameplay) it becomes really hard for you eyes. If there is an option to reduce these - it would be 5+1 stars!
WAY TOO Difficult
realkuhl 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
I'm lowering my rating.
Outstanding!
Erinreid 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Another winner from Critical Thought Games! Congratulations on this find sequel to GeoDefense. I usually prefer fixed-path Tower Defense games, but this is the best open-field game I've ever played due to the frenetic pace and deep strategy that has to be dealt with in each new level.
Similar and Different and all good
Hexii 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
In many ways it feels like GeoDefense, but all together different at the same time. The levels take a whole new type of thinking. I'm loving it and I know I will enjoy this game for many many hours. I don't think you will find a better value (other than the original GD if you haven't gotten it).
Best TD EVAR!
Cronollo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
As far as TD's go, this is definetly the standard, it is far and away the best TD out there. The controls are simple the maps are awesome, and even if it is a little hard for those non-aficianados of the genre theres a Novice Mode which anyone could beat. Get it now!!
FAIL!!
Runscape maniac 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
This game crashes 24/7..! U need to fix it!!!!
Good
AllTheseNamesAreTaken 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Just Good. Basic .99 cent app got the 5 stars for being one of the better ones.
Ok
Xxjmfxx 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
This game is ok. I prefer the original GD. Something about this one lacks the fun the first one had. 3 stars bc I feel generous
Too hard!
Welliecooldog 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Very fun but I can't make it from the second level!!! Please make it a little easier!
Great app!
Marcellus2070 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Great "sequel" to the original geoDefense. Please add more levels! Simply the most challenging tower defense game out there.
Heh, just played the first level! Awesome!
Mr invisible on the beach 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Title says it all... back to the game for now!
geoDefense 2.0
fleshandgames(dot)com for gaming news. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Freakin sweet! Definite Buy especially for $0.99
Finally
iPhil  5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Have been waiting for a while for this game to be released, it's finally here and lives up to the hype. Great sequal to the popular geoDefense. A completely new style of play that builds off it's predecessor. Everythings great, the icon could be better ;), but everything's great.
great variation
CodeOfficer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
I'm already a huge fan of GeoDefense and Swarm does not disappoint. Very impressive, thanks!
geoDefense
l33tgeek 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
geoDefense is by far the only iPhone / iPod game that has kept me coming back for more, far after I had mastered every level... Looks like we have another winner on our hands! I have been checking several times a day for this release and they have not let us down! Heres to another great title from an amazing team!
My 1st tower defense game
Bean Dude 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Love it. Can't figure out how to get past the 1st medium level though.
Best tower defense game on App Store
tyfortehlulz 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Face it. Not a single tower defense game comes close to matching the glory of geoDefense and geoDefense Swarm.
Fun game, but...
Drjohan69 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Impossible to disable Openfeint. I don't want my scores uploaded, I don't want to "network" with friends playing games, and I don't want Openfeint on my phone. Allow me to disable it.
Way too hard!!!!!
One step under 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
It's so hard I can't get passed the second level. Do not get this game. So boring too. Just trust me do not get it.
