New iPhone? Try these must-have free apps
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Dec 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you have that new iPhone you received for the holidays, you're probably looking to load it up with some apps that will enhance your mobile experience. Let me suggest some of the best of the free apps. Of course, everyone will have their own list, but here are my 5 favorites that I think most new iPhone users will love to use and to show off their new iPhone. If you're a news junkie, by all means get Zite, newly released for the iPhone. It sets you up with news categories of interest to you, then learns what you like by keeping track of stories you click on. Over time, it gets smarter and smarter, so in essence it creates a personalized magazine for you. Their are other news readers and aggregators, but the presentation of stories in Zite and its ability to learn make it my first choice. Glypmse Read More

Apple's Find My Friends app now available
Calendar16 Wed, 12 Oct 2011 15:11:00 UTC +00:00
In advance of iOS 5, Apple has released Find My Friends, a location sharing app similar to Glympse. As the name implies, Find My Friends will let you locate your friends on a map. It'll also let you share your location so your friends can find you. For those concerned about privacy, the location sharing feature can be turned on permanently or only temporarily which is great for when you want your friends to meet you while you're eating dinner at a local restaurant, but not when you go home. It's also conveniently integrated with the built-in contact and map applications so you can find your friends and generate a route to meet up with them. You can install Find My Friends by visiting iCloud.com on an iPhone running iOS 5. You can also download it from the App Store. Read More

Glympse is a great way to share your location
Calendar16 Thu, 03 Feb 2011 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
Somehow we missed telling you about Glympse, the great little free app that lets you tell others where you are in real time. To get started, download Glympse to your iPhone and accept the terms of use. There are no accounts to set up or anything else to fiddle with. When you're ready to share your location, enter an email address or search your contacts. Select a contact, email or text message number and set a duration you'd like the person to be able to see your location. Seconds later, your recipient receives a link. If they are on a laptop or PC, they will see you on a Google Map -- it can be street or satellite view. Your icon will be moving in near real time, and your speed will be displayed. If you have selected a destination, it will show up on the map as well. It doesn't Read More

Glympse is a simple and elegant mobile app that allows "real-time location sharing" via mobile devices. Users who receive a "Glympse" (via email or otherwise) can see the movements of the person in real time on a map, as he or she travels to a destination. We wrote about it when the company launched a year ago. It has versions that work on the iPhone/iPod Touch, Android, Windows Mobile and of course now the iPad. Glympse continues to build out its offering and service and today announced real-time location sharing on Facebook: Glympse goes beyond static "check-ins" or a simple map showing your location, and allows iPhone™ and Android users to quickly update their status via their mobile phone so their Facebook friends can follow their real-time movements on a dynamic map, for a set period of time. It also works via Twitter too (although you only get the link via Read More
A Redmond-based startup is introducing a location-based social sharing service called Glympse. With a mobile application that works on iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile devices, users share their location (aka a "Glympse"), allowing their friends to see that location on another phone or on any other Internet-connected device. Senders can customize who gets to see the Glympse they post, whether the recipient is just one person, a group, or even everyone they've added as a friend on a social network like Facebook or Twitter. The interesting twist to this service isn't the location-sharing aspect, of course - there are dozens of companies that allow for that today - it's the service's real-time nature and the thoughtfully included privacy features. Using a patent-pending timer option, Glympse users specify how long their location is visible to which select group of friends, with a maximum time of four hours before the location data expires. Redmond-based location-sharing startup Glympse has updated its apps for iPhone and Android to give users the option of automatically showing a dynamic, live map of their location to their Facebook friends. The new feature expands the service beyond its existing distribution channels of email, Twitter and text messages. It also puts Glympse out in front of Facebook's own plans. The popular social networking service has signaled its intent to integrate location-sharing as a native feature of the site, but it hasn't been rolled out yet. Glympse, launched last year by three Microsoft veterans, lets people share their location on maps with specific people or groups for limited periods of time, which they can specify and control to maintain privacy. Common uses include sending a message so that other people can see where Glympse users are when they're late for a meeting, or taking a long trip. Recipients of the Glympse users Read More

Personally, I’m headed to San Diego to attend both SourceCon and the ERE Spring Expo. Then I remembered that I’m the proud owner of an iPhone, and that almost everything I’ll need to make it through is easily accessible and at the tip of my fingers. Here are some of the apps which I believe will help you navigate, stay connected, and meet new friends when you attend a conference. iPhone app shares your whereabouts with ease
Calendar16 Tue, 20 Oct 2009 18:54:00 UTC +00:00
During a recent visit to a friend's house in backwoods Kentucky, I got lost while jogging on deserted country roads. I had my iPhone, luckily, but no good way to tell my buddy where I was so he could talk me back. What I needed was Glympse, a fantastic new app that shares your location via e-mail, text message, and/or Twitter--and does so for a set amount of time. Tapping Google Maps, Glympse quickly zeroes in on your current location, then gives you the option of sending it to one or more e-mail addresses and/or phone numbers. If you elect to link your Twitter account, you can just type in "Twitter" in the To field. From there you choose a duration: anywhere from 0 minutes (meaning Glympse sends your current location and that's it) to four hours. For anything higher than zero, the recipient can track your movement in real-time, in Read More

Glympse rocks!
Soccer mom Pam 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
I spend lots of time shuffling the gang around in the car. Glympse works great for me. I send out a Glympse as I'm leaving, and people always know where I am - and are ready to go when I get there. No more waiting around.
Very cool app. Beautiful. Easy to use.
Jurys out 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74

What a great app!

Great app that is easy to use and doesn't invade my privacy.
Finally!
jeep1024 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
Took me a second to get what the difference was, but it all comes down to "you are in control". No friends networks to deal with, no big-brother-is-watching, no guessing who is watching me when. Just select email/sms and go! Wish it also had navigation so I wouldn't have to use Google Maps, but I guess that's V2! :)
The best real time location sharing app of all
MadDog3057 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
I've been using Glympse ever since they started the beta test on the iPhone. This application has proven to be very useful. It allows you to send "glympses" to your friends and family to let them know in real time where you are and they can continue to see this for as long as you specify. This final release looks as good as it works. Once you download this app you'll see just how many uses you can have for it. Definitely one of the best apps on the iPhone.
Awesome low maintenance location sharing
Orngchkn 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
This app is great because I don't have to manage Yet Another Social Network. I just choose who I want to see where I am and for how long and that's it. So simple. This is definitely the first app to highlight a true need for backgrounding of apps on the iPhone. I'd have it running all the time!
Flawless
Jhartman 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
No hassle, works great and is free. What is the catch?
Finally a solution for sharing your location in a secure, simple manner!
jgough 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
It's free and super practical. Already making my life easier and allowing me to interact with friends in a new, meaningful way. When you share your location with someone it sends them a link to a map. It includes estimated arrival time (if applicable) and speed. The great part is that your location is shared on an expiring timer (you set the time - max 4 hours). So you can share with one or many, then forget about it.
Great for bands!
renton 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
We just completed a tour and frequently sent out our location using glympse...fans/wives could see where we were at and enjoy the 4000+ miles driven with us, without all the twiddling of thumbs.
Awesome!

Amazing!!!
Observant 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
What a neat app which can help in so many ways (not to mention fun too).
So simple!
Fabozz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
I love how easy Glympse is to use. No friends invites, no network to manage--if I need someone to know where I am, I just email them a link they can load in any browser.
Great idea, good app
derring dodette 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
"Sharing your where" with Glympse is an easy way to let trusted recipients know where you are, exactly. No more needing to call (or text!) from the car to say you're going to be home late. Real-time location information for only those you want to know, and for as long as you choose (but only up to 4 hours.) As others have mentioned, the fore-ground-only operation is a bit of an issue, but logical. Having a bit of trouble getting easily in to received Glympses, hope that is made simpler soon. WISH I'd gotten the invite to this when it was released, as would have been great fun on our recent trip to San Francisco! Why did I register, if you guys don't let us know you've finally released the iPhone app? Sheesh.

Good app
Coolest App Around!
123Joey456 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
This app is so cool! You just click on the tell button and boom! They know where you are and how far away you are! I really enjoy this app! One of the best ones out there
Very cool idea.
Jumponit 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.74
But that's all it is - an idea. No friends list per say, but there is a 'favorites' section where you can send pre-made messages to friends. More updates = more fun.
