Description

While surfing the web on your iPad, we expect many of you will want to check your Gmail. If you go to gmail.com in your browser, you’ll see something different than what you’re used to on the desktop. We’re releasing an experimental user interface for the iPad built on the Gmail for mobile HTML5 web app that we launched last year for the iPhone and Android devices. Those devices have large screens compared to other phones, and tablets like the iPad give us even more room to innovate. To take advantage of the iPad’s large display, we’ve created a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and messages to the right.

On April 7th 2009, we announced a new version of Gmail for mobile for iPhone and Android-powered devices. Among the improvements was a complete redesign of the web application's underlying code which allows us to more rapidly develop and release new features that users have been asking for, as explained in our first post. We'd like to introduce The Iterative Webapp, a series where we will continue to release features for Gmail for mobile. Today: Compose view redesign You're on the subway and you get the brilliant idea to host a TV viewing party for your friends for the premier of Conan O'Brien's new show. You pull out your phone (or your iPad) and start typing names into the compose page at gmail.com. (Yes, it works on the subway.) You've added Naveed, Suzy and 7 others before you remember that Naveed made you eat grass at the last BBQ. You want Read More
Google's new experimental two pane interface has conversations (emails listed) on the left side and the messages on the right side. It will faintly remind you of the old Outlook version. All other features of Gmail Web App have been incorporated in this special interface for iPad. Alex Nicolaou, an engineering manager with Google, stated on the official Gmail blog that all the features of the Gmail web app that you're used to, such as offline access and aggressive caching to reduce latency, are present in the iPad version. Do note this is not the final version of Gmail's interface for iPad and other tablets. Google will keep making changes and will add features in this Gmail interface for large screen devices as more tablets start showing up in the market. Related Links Tag keywords Read More
If you look at what's happening in the software development world, it's pretty remarkable to see how the iPad has shuffled things up. With any new platform, some tweaks are made, but few happen this fast. There were only a few months between the debut of the iPad and the launch of it, yet many developers have already created new applications that take advantage of the extra screen space. This rapid rate of development is likely spurred by just how successful the App Store has been on the iPhone and iPod touch, and many developers are seeing green at the chance to charge even more for "HD" versions of these apps for the iPad. Google is no different. The company has had their problems with Apple over the past few months (remember that lawsuit against HTC that specifically calls out Android devices?), but Google still understands just how important Apple devices Read More

iPad gets Gmail web app from Google
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
I actually think the iPad’s native Mail application will be pretty satisfying but we all know Google makes the best Gmail clients, so it’s a good thing the search giant has introduced a web app specifically for Apple’s tablet. While you’ll be able to get Gmail through the Mail’s IMAP protocol, Big G is making its own touch-tastic version that you can use just by visiting Gmail.com in the iPad’s browser. Utilizing HTML5, the web app takes advantage of the tablet’s bigger screen to provide a two-pane view for reading, sending and receiving e-mails. This view actually looks pretty bad ass and I wouldn’t mind my normal, non-touch interface looking like this. You’ll have all the regular functionality you expect, including labels, stars, and the whole shebang. You can also make this a home screen link, so it will look like any other app. This is iPad-focused for the moment but Read More
Google Rolls Out iPad-Formatted Gmail - Mac Rumors
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
Google today announced that it has rolled out a new iPad-formatted mobile interface for Gmail, building on the HTML5-based mobile format used for the iPhone to create a two-column interface like that used for Apple's Mail application on the iPad. We're releasing an experimental user interface for the iPad built on the Gmail for mobile HTML5 web app that we launched last year for the iPhone and Android devices. Those devices have large screens compared to other phones, and tablets like the iPad give us even more room to innovate. To take advantage of the iPad's large display, we've created a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and messages to the right. iPad users will be automatically presented with the new format when they navigate to gmail.com on the device. Google has also taken the opportunity to promote its other contributions to the iPad, including the YouTube Read More

By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Apr 2, 2010 | Google continues to lead the pack when it comes to web apps, so we’re not surprised to see them announce an experimental Gmail site up and optimized in time for the iPad release. Some other Google web apps will present iPad-optimized versions, while a few will retain their desktop look.
