Google+ for Android gets a big performance-fixing update
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Feb 2012 10:11:56 UTC +00:00
Google has updated mobile client of its social network Google+ for Android. The new version is said to come with massive performance improvements across the app, while also packing few new features. For instance, now you can quickly see “What’s Hot!” in your circles and view who +1′d a post or comment. Moreover, stream posts are shortened to fit more per scroll and it no longer jumps to the top for an automatic refresh. Finally, there’s the infinite photos feed in the “From your circles” section. Unfortunately, tablet users won’t get special treatment and Google+ still leaves a ton of white space on Honeycomb devices. Yeah that’s a poor use of the larger screen real estate and we hope that’s something Google will address in some future app update. We’ll see… Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" Read More
Here are some of our favorite apps of 2011
Calendar16 Sat, 31 Dec 2011 16:00:27 UTC +00:00
Apps are, at the end of the day, very personal pieces of software. And your favorite mobile app isn’t mine. So we decided to poll the staff here at GigaOM to see what apps changed our lives in 2011. It could be apps that just launched this year, or it could be programs that really came of age or matured greatly through updates. Or it could just be an app we missed before. Some are very familiar but others may be new to you, but all have played a big part in our lives this year. Take a look and then tell us your favorite app in the comments. Android typically takes a backseat to iOS when it comes to getting slick apps. That’s why it’s so refreshing that Hipmunk, the travel search engine, put real time and effort into making its Android app just as awesome as its web and Read More
The Top 30 Android Apps And Games Of 2011

Editor’s note: Contributor Brad Spirrison is the managing editor of mobile app discovery services Appolicious, AndroidApps and AppVee. After having looked into the best iOS apps and games of 2011, Spirrison now turns his attention to the best Android apps of the year. Android apps come in all shapes and sizes – literally. Unlike iOS applications, which are basically created for two form factors, Android apps need to be developed with dozens (if not hundreds) of device-types in mind. This is on top of the inconsistent operating system releases still mucking things up. While all of this fragmentation is a headache for developers, ignoring a platform with 50 percent market share would ultimately lead to their peril. The best Android apps are thus the ones that can both push the technological envelope while also remaining accessible to the vast majority of users. This is no easy feat. Droid Life’s Top 25 Android Apps Of 2011 – Droid Life
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Dec 2011 21:02:33 UTC +00:00
As we draw closer to the end of year, we wanted to reflect on some of the apps that seemed to have taken 2011 by storm.  It was only a year ago that the Android Market hit the 200,000 apps milestone, and now we are talking 10 billion app downloads and beyond. Whether it was a new messaging client, revamped social networking tool, or even a game that consumed our days to the fullest, this was a great year for applications on Android.  2011 also marked the release of the Amazon Appstore, which changed the way developers could market their apps to potential buyers and also showed that Amazon knew people loved free things. So below, we have a list of the apps that we feel were the most popular, talked about and influential here at Droid Life throughout the year.  We have tried to keep it to apps that were released this Read More
Right after updating its Google+ service on the web, Google has immediately updated the Google+ Android app as well. This comes right after new features such as photo tagging, hashtags, and instant hang outs have been introduced recently. Now, with the new version of Google+ Android app you’ll be able to enjoy this awesome feature – the ability to start a hang-out right inside the Google+ Messenger. Alright, for those who are not using Google+ Android app, it actually consists of several features aside from letting you read your Google+ Stream.  At the app’s main screen you’ll see five options namely, Stream, Photos, Profile, Circles and Messenger. Messenger is the facility for starting threaded conversations with any of your friends in your Google+ Circles. So, now aside from the chat feature, you can now also start a Google+ Hangout. Of course, your Android phone needs to have a front-facing camera to Read More

Lately I’ve been asked which Android software I’m using so I directed a friend to “my 30 essential Android apps,” the post I wrote about two months ago. However, not everyone likes my list – they want something more structured. Then I prepared the “must-have Android apps” list which goes through different kinds of Android software, helping people decided what they need for what purpose. I went into details in that article and that’s also not that cool for everyone – so here’s something in between, a structured list of apps divided by categories. Google+ Android app gains more parity with web client
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Dec 2011 19:17:02 UTC +00:00
Google on Wednesday released an updated version of its Google+ app for Android devices, adding a handful of useful features. The free software ties into Google’s social network and works on smartphones or tablets running Android version 2.1 or higher. As of time of this writing, that accounts for 97.9 percent of all Android devices that hit Google’s Android Market in the past two weeks. In addition to Facebook and Twitter, I now use Google+ every day. Some of the new features are ones that I use on the desktop web client and I’ve been frustrated that the full functionality of the service hasn’t been replicated on mobile devices. There’s more feature parity today, at least on Android devices, with these new functions in the mobile app: I often +1 both photos and comments on the web version, so this feature alone is worth the quick upgrade to me. I don’t Read More
By: Clint Boulton 2011-11-01 Article Rating: / 2 Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Oct. 31 said it has overhauled its Google+ for Android application, working closely with the company's Android team to help the app's design hew closely to the forthcoming Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system. Google+ for Android 2.1 offers a new user interface for posting, better notifications, and navigation and performance improvements. Users may add other users from a Circle from Circle profiles. eWEEK spent about 15 minutes with version 2.1, which will work for any phone running Android 2.2 Froyo and later. The app rendered photos more quickly than ever before and placed photos in attractive, tile-like rows. Photos in users' Circles also surfaced quickly and Circles loaded within two seconds. The UI appears a little crisper, too. "We worked closely with the Android team as they developed Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) so you'll see the same attention to Read More
It seems mobile customization is regaining popularity with the recent rush of software updates on Android and even iOS. Not everyone will witness the fresh capabilities of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich’s lock screen security features first hand, so It’s no wonder GO Locker’s custom lock screen options have become so popular this week. Google’s also readying its mobile apps for a brighter future with ICS, pushing a major revamp to its Google+ social app. If you’re tired of looking at the same lock screen on your Android, why not customize it? Your idle screen can get a touch of personalization with the GO Locker app, providing a variety of wallpapers and themes. And if you don’t like the pre-selected options, head to the GO store to see a few additional options. Beyond the look of your lock screen you can also change the sound associated with unlock, and even the Read More
If you’re an avid user of Google+ and have yet to receive an update notification for the app on your Android device, you may want to check the Market now. A total redesign of the Google+ app for Android has just been released in the last day that features a new UI, bug fixes, battery life improvements and more. According to the “What’s New” section in the Android Market listing, the latest version of Google+ for Android is a “completely new app” and features a “new visual design.” The new visual design they’re talking about is directly related to Ice Cream Sandwich. The app is still colored the same (lots of gray, red, green and blue), but features back buttons on every page, as well as a new posting UI and a slick new messaging app. Also found throughout the app, especially the messenger, are some of the same graphics shown Read More
Whether you’re an avid Google+ user or just an on again/off again user, you’ll undoubtedly enjoy the latest update that Google has provided for its social networking application. The Google+ update brings the aesthetic look of Ice Cream Sandwich and we’re in love with the new look. The latest version of Google+ brings the following tweaks/updates The most interesting of the updates is obviously the updates UI, as it looks like it has been taken directly from Ice Cream Sandwich. From the dark bar found at the top to the small airplane looking soft key for sending, the application has never looked better and makes us even more excited for the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich update. Let’s not forget about the other updates to Google+, as we’re sure many people will be happy to see battery life improvements and bug fixes found throughout. While I’m not necessarily gaga for Google+, or Read More
All the cool functionality of Google’s newish social network, Google+, is available in its tablet app, and its clean presentation makes it very easy to use. Much like its competitors, Google+ lets you connect with friends and colleagues and add them to “circles” based on their relationship to you. Then you can post photos, videos and status updates, and choose which circles can see what information, giving you lots of control over what you share and with whom. Like the website, the Google+ app is clean, free of clutter and very easy to navigate. Photos and videos also get the big-screen treatment which makes them nice to check out. Uploading your own content is also very straightforward. If you’re not already a fan of Google+, the network’s tablet app is so easy to use, it may convince you to try it out some more. Read More

The Best Video Chat Application for Android
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Oct 2011 02:50:57 UTC +00:00
Android users with front-facing cameras looking to make video calls from their phones have a lot of great options, but we found that Skype is the most mature and feature-rich video chat application for the job. Platform: AndroidPrice: FreeDownload Page Skype's biggest strength is the wide breadth of its audience. There are Skype users who use their Android phones, Android tablets, iPhones, iPads, desktops, laptops, even their televisions to communicate, and with Skype for Android you can videochat with all of them. Skype may have its faults (and we'll get to some of them in a moment) but after all, the best video chat application is the one you can actually use, and it's a pretty fair bet that your friends and family have either heard of Skype or have Skype accounts already. The Skype mobile app is incredibly easy to use, and comes pre-installed on many phones (which is both Read More

The fellows at Android Police have their hands on a couple new apps from the Ice Cream Sandwich build that's floating around out there (how 'bout a dump for the community, Mr. Anon?), and with it comes with new Google Music and Google+ apps.  The new music app has a bit of a UI makeover, with more sleek (and less screen real-estate wasting) controls, most noticeable in the "now playing" screen, and a search button has been included since ICS has no dedicated search key.  It appears that everything we know and love about Google Music is there, but in a more refined package. The Google+ app at first look appears much like the current version in the Android Market, until you look at the Huddle Messenger portion.  Once again, it's been renamed, this time Google is calling it "Chords."  While that may be confusing at first, it's probably less confusing Read More

Yesterday I talked about 30 essentail apps I installed on my brand new Samsung II. Today I want to share my home screens with you. As a productivity freak, I’m constantly trying to get more things done during the day and in that sense I organized my phone’s home screen, as well. Android devices are instantly gratifying gadgets of wonder. They give us directions, messages, a camera, endless music and live TV. They also give us access to our files, wherever we’ve stored them. From SugarSync to Cheetah Sync, Google + and Trend Micro, content syncing and backup is becoming a bonus perk for apps of every flavor. It was also a notable week for several top brand Android apps, including Foursquare, celebrating 1 billion check-ins with an updated app. As far as automated file syncing goes, SugarSync is one of the simplest solutions. An update to the Android app makes things even easier, with the Mobile Device Management feature. With this you can view and manage your content from the app, instead of merely accessing files. A new in-app text editor makes you more productive when it comes to editing and managing your files. Create new folders or text files to be Read More
Android's 20 most useful smartphone apps of 2011 | ZDNet
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Sep 2011 18:45:52 UTC +00:00
Summary: To help you sort through the deluge of apps, here’s a list of 20 tried-and-true Android smartphone apps that are worth your time to download. Another one of the great things about Android (if you’re a geek or a tinkerer) is that you have lower-level access to the system itself. Astro is an app that lets you navigate the Android file system, which is mostly just interesting, but can be handy once in a while. I’m obsessed with running speed tests to check my bandwidth in various places, both to see 3G/4G fluctuations and to check the quality of Wi-Fi. There are a number of really good speed test apps, but my favorite is the Speedtest.net app. It’s generally consistent and it has some of the best graphics and options. I’ve never completely warmed up to the Amazon Kindle e-reader, but I’m a big fan of the Kindle mobile app. Read More
Google as an app developer has released various applications in the Android Market and some of these come pre-installed on most Android devices – like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search. But others have to be downloaded from Android Market; we have compiled a list of these apps that have been developed by Google. The number comes around 40 apps, although we have tried our best, but we might have missed a few. But not all applications are available in every country and every device; some are regional apps as they support only certain languages or certain apps might support only few device types. So, the best way to check if one of these apps is available in your country is to go to the phone/tablet based Market app and try searching for that particular app – if it comes in the search results than you are good to go. By: Clint Boulton 2011-08-30 Article Rating: / 0 Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has improved its Google+ for Android mobile application, adding the ability for users to reshare a post they like and making the application available in 38 languages. Google+ for Android  allows users of the social network to publish updates to their Google+ Stream and see the links, pictures and updates posted to the service by folks in their Circles. Users may also manage those Circles and view public posts from other Google+ users located nearby, and allow all the photos taken from their phone to be instantly uploaded to Google+. Google would go on to offer a Google+ for iPhone application, which rocketed to the top of Apple's iTunes App Store free application list in July. Worth Reading? +2 [2 votes] Google has just pushed out yet another update for the popular Google+ Android application with some much needed improvements. The list is quite large and a good start indeed but the last update aimed to fix notifications but those are still a bit buggy for me. One of the biggest improvements I see right away is the +mentions now autofill from your Circles. Something that worked great online but was not as easy on the mobile application. They claimed to have added stability and improvements to the notification system so hopefully that works better than before, support for over 38 new languages for the Android app have also been integrated. The biggest improvement in my opinion is that we now can do +mentions that populate from your circles. On the mobile app they had to be in your Google contacts until now, that one one of Read More

So now, we're proud to present the titles that you love most. One of the areas where I find Android head and shoulders above the iPhone is navigation, and Google's Maps app is why. I use it plenty--finding out where I am when I emerge from the subway, looking for a nearby restaurant, even showing strangers where to go when they flag me down asking for directions. All that is great new stuff I couldn't do with a phone a few years ago, but it's the navigation component that Read More
Posted by Comments Google+ is the Android interface for Google’s new social network, ‘Google+’. Endeavoring to include as much as the web experience as possible, the app has lots of features including automatic picture uploads and ‘Huddle’- a group chat messaging function. Google+ is in beta stage and, as perhaps should be expected, some issues also exist on the mobile app. This said, the Google+ app is smooth, easy to use and understand and a great means to access Google+ on the go. I get the impression Google recognize a service needs to have a mobile platform to thrive (probably learnt from not bothering to release a Google Wave app), so you could argue this is essential to the social networks growth. There are task management apps, audio and video apps, a file cabinet app, a business card app, and more. Silently record all the calls to a directory on your SD card. Price: $3.99. -- Caller ID Plus automatically identifies incoming callers and displays the name, address and city of the caller. The application also helps you quickly find people, services or businesses. Price: $4.25. -- In addition to all the definitions from Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, this app offers voice search — to look up a word without having to spell it — along with synonyms, antonyms, example sentences, Word of the Day, and more. It’s helpful for reference, education, and vocabulary building. Also available on Read More
Call me an early adopter if you must, but count me in with the millions of people who have fully embraced Google+, Google's latest attempt at a social network. I am really digging the Circles paradigm, where you're invited to group up your friends and colleagues into separate circles, so you can fine-tune who you choose to keep in touch with. I also find the interface clean and intuitive, and I have to give props to Google+ for being much more privacy-aware than a certain other competitor. One of the best things about Google+ is its Android app. Just download it from the Android Market, and within a couple of taps, you're ready to go. The mobile app is well designed, and you can switch Circle views by just swiping left to right. It's also easy to check notifications, and posting photos couldn't be simpler. Even better is the Huddle feature, Read More
One of the areas where I find Android head and shoulders above the iPhone is navigation, and Google's Maps app is why. I use it plenty--finding out where I am when I emerge from the subway, looking for a nearby restaurant, even showing strangers where to go when they flag me down asking for directions. All that is great new stuff I couldn't do with a phone a few years ago, but it's the navigation component that spared me a couple hundred bucks I otherwise would have spent on a sat-nav system. The navigation shows a virtual view of the road as I drive, warning me of upcoming intersections and telling me which exit I need to take off the roundabout. I use it for walking, too. Clicking the locate-yourself button in the upper right helpfully toggles from a bird's-eye view to one showing your own orientation and perspective. The app Read More

When you first get a new smartphone, it's hard to know where to begin. Learning your way in and out of the menus and pages will eventually come with time. But one of the first things every newcomer will want to do is peruse the application stores for the coolest and snazziest apps and games available. In a sea of hundreds of thousands of applications, where do you start? I have been using Android for nearly two years now and I've come to love and rely on many apps. It's tough narrowing the list of roughly 100 applications on my phone down to just ten, but here goes: Chances are, if you haven't heard about Google+ yet, you probably haven't logged into Twitter or checked any major tech site lately. Aside from being a strong contender as a social medium, the Google+ Android app is phenomenal. It is the epitome of Read More

APP OF THE DAY - Google+ (Android) - Pocket-lint
Calendar16 Mon, 04 Jul 2011 19:23:44 UTC +00:00
4 July 2011 18:00 GMT / By Chris Hall Some years ago, people would say that if a company didn’t have a website, it basically didn’t exist. Nowadays you might apply the same logic to apps, especially when you are a new social network from the Mountain View giant that is Google.  That’s not a problem for Google, who not only has its own mobile phone platform, but a shiny new app to go with it. Fittingly, App of the Day is Google+. Google+ is a brand new shiny social network, currently in beta, under the guise of invitation only, but with growing numbers as people find a way to get in on the action. As soon as you have your Google account setup on Google+, you’re ready to hit the app and bring that magic to your Android phone. Because it is part of the Google system there is very Read More
A small update to the Google+ Android app, which is quickly becoming one of the top apps I use every day, was released a few minutes ago. The update mostly resolves login issues for those with multiple Gmail accounts (we've heard many of you complain about not being able to sign in because of that). Other additions include a new "spiffy" profile icon and UI polish. Grab the update in the Market if you already have access to Plus, and if you don't, feel free to drop your name and email in this post. We'll try to mass invite once Google allows it again (the workaround that many of you pointed out doesn't work for mass invites, and I'm not about to manually invite 4500+ people on the list :-]. However, if you have friends on Plus, you can try asking them). What's in this version: Google+ P.S. Please do not Read More
Google is percolating something new, feeding us bit-by-bit the details of its latest social coup. The search engine is testing the waters of today’s social web culture, launching Google+ in private beta. The project comes with an Android app, syncing photos and other content with your socially-enhanced Google profile. Google+’s biggest adversary, Facebook, has updated its Android app too, finally adding video uploads. In Google’s latest attempt at socializing its search engine, the company’s revealing slices of its strategy, the latest being Google+. This new profile aggregates your social activity, centralizing the management of your personal, social cloud. With an accompanying Android app, you can upload and sync photos to private or public clouds, share your location, interact with groups called Circles, and group message with private groups called Huddles. The idea is to manage your stream of content only with the folks you select. Facebook’s added a significant update to Read More

Awesome app! People who don't have an invite and give the app 1 star are idiots. It's a beta, deal with it, if you aren't using it you have no right rating it. Stop whining and just wait for them to roll out, you will survive.

Love this app, and Google+ in general, but the latest version is no longer compatible with my modded (Android v2.3.5) Sony Xperia X10 Mini Pro. It's a shame as it's still compatible on my girlfriend's Mini Pro, who's running the stock v2.1 install that shipped with the phone. Hope this gets addressed in a future release otherwise I'm stuck on v1.0.6.

Has crashed my DroidX running 2.3 twice now. Add another app to the list that aren't compatible with DroidX gingerbread. Funny Google bought Motorola but half the apps on the android platform don't work with the DroidX running gingerbread. U could at least offer the honeycomb update for those of us with another year left before we can update our device. I've been a loyal Motorola customer since the Startac & Timeport, & even before that when my 1st pager was a Motorola in the 90's. This is the 1st Motorola I've ever hated & that hate didn't start until gingerbread was forced down my throat. As for Google+ it still needs a lot of work but I'm sure u know that. Rating a Google app is pointless anyway bc they all seem to keep a 4-5 ★ avg regardless off what the comments imply. Wonder why that is?

I hope you read this comment Google, i own the Galaxy tab 10.1 and my friend owns the Xoom, fine the G+ is a great innovation in another social networking area of life, Really you own the H.comb OS and the G+ app for your OS and yet you don't have a G+ optimized app for the honeycomb OS, because the app sucks in the OS, my friend isn't using it and am thinking of not using it either again, am using only based version of fb because of this, not sure you really took honeycomb OS seriously Google,no offenses.

Can't even launch the app. It tells me I need an internet connection. Doesn't recognize my 3G or my wifi. Nexus One...should work with a google app
