Google's Google Play Books market isn't just for Android devices. There's also an iOS app available to read content purchased on that market, and it's just been updated with some new features. Bookmarks let you place a bookmark by touching the top right corner. You can also highlight and even put notes on specific text as you read. You can search for and define certain bits of text, and use the +1 button to share whatever you're reading on Google Plus. Are we too kind to pass on mentioning that iBooks already had all of these features, save for the Google Plus integration? Apparently not. But if you've got content on Google Play already, at least you'll have an easier time of reading it now, even on an iOS device. Read More
iOS Reading Apps for Book Worms

12.16.11        For those new to the world of the iPhone, the discovery that you can easily and comfortably read on that little screen is a bit of a revelation. Suddenly, you can carry entire volumes of prose in your pocket, as easily as your contacts list. App developers are keen to this, and so the iTunes App Store is flooded with e-readers and e-books. Some are better than others. Read on to discover the very best of bunch. Stanza is an e-book reader app so good, Amazon snatched it up before it could pose a threat to their Kindle iPhone app. Thankfully, you can still download Stanza for free and use it to read Kindle files, or any other e-book files, for that matter. Stanza has a gorgeous, easy-to-use library view, access to online book repositories like Project Gutenberg, and a clean, distraction-free interface for reading. You can Read More
Google Books app back on the store, sans subscription link
Calendar16 Tue, 26 Jul 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
9to5Mac reports that the Google Books app for iPad has returned to the App Store after some time away, and this time it's available only without the "Get eBooks" button that led off to the service's subscription and downloads page. This is due, of course, to Apple's subscription policy requiring that any services or files sold inside an app must present a way to go through Apple's services rather than directly off to Google's own store. Google didn't want to have to offer customers both, so instead they've offered customers neither, letting the app stand alone as an e-reader. Read More
4 Places to Get Free eBooks for Your iDevice, Legitimately
Calendar16 Wed, 13 Apr 2011 19:16:56 UTC +00:00
Did you know that it’s possible to read on your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch? Crazy, right? Like anyone reads anymore. Seriously, though, reading is one of our favorite pastimes. We usually enjoy using the Kindle, because it’s lightweight and very easy to use. The eInk screen is pleasant to look at. No complaints from us. Thing is, there are also plenty of iPads out there. Why not give people something to read? Know that we didn’t give iBooks its own spot on the list as that’s pretty much a giveaway. We’re looking at some of the places to get books for those who enjoy reading on the iPad. Hit the jump to take a look.   Amazon has the most popular eReader, and that means they offer the most books. Thing is, we are looking for the free stuff. Just hit up Amazon’s Kindle store and ask it to Read More
By Chris Oldroyd, Wednesday, Apr 6, 2011 | Google has released an update to its ebook reading application Google Books. The update mainly offers support for landscape reading mode on the iPad but does include a few extra features and bug fixes. Some of the new features include the “Find” feature, which shows matched words throughout the book when you scroll. Also, you can automatically sign in to Google when you tap “Get eBooks”. Bug fixes cover speed improvements, 3-D page turning for the iPad on iOS 4.3 and above and a better downloading experience. Do any of our readers use Google Books? Let us know in the comments! Google has updated its Books app for iOS today, and the new version brings a handful of bug fixes, performance improvements, and a couple of new features. One of these is iPad-specific: reading books in the landscape orientation on Apple tablets is now possible. The second is the addition of a Find feature which shows you all the matches for a particular query as you scroll. Tapping Get Books now logs you into the Google eBookstore with the same username you used to log into the app itself. The magnifier has been removed, the book downloading experience and the overall speed of the app have been improved, and 3D page turning now works on iPads running iOS 4.3. All of these represent small steps toward making Google Books a solid and compelling e-book reader for iOS. What remains to be seen is whether it will ever manage to attract a significant Read More
Google Books iOS app updated with landscape mode [Video]
Calendar16 Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:36:35 UTC +00:00
When Google Books first came out it was rightly seen as not being quite as good as its competitors like the Amazon Kindle and the iBooks app because it lacked some basic features like having a landscape mode. Well, the Google Books iOS app has just received an update and this includes a few small, subtle improvements which makes this a better reading experience. The biggest and most-needed improvement to the Google Books iOS app is that you can now read in landscape mode. While this may not be a big deal on the iPhone or the iPod touch, you can see in the video this makes a big difference when you’re trying to read on a large-screen iPad. This probably should have been there at launch as landscape mode has been present on devices like the Motorola Xoom. Still, it’s nice to see this get improved. Speaking of improved, the Read More
Google Books for iOS adds landscape reading, speed boost
Calendar16 Tue, 05 Apr 2011 20:30:00 UTC +00:00
Google Books for iOS was introduced late last year and opened the world of Google's 2 million digital books to iOS owners. The application competed with Apple's iBooks and Amazon's Kindle application, but it lacked the polish and finesse of these two applications. This latest version released today kicks it up a notch by adding a landscape mode for e-book reading on your iPad and a find feature that shows specific keyword and phrase matches as you scroll through a book. Several bug fixes and enhancements include a nifty 3D page turning feature on the iPad and an new login feature that lets you easily download e-books using your Google account. The speed and performance of the overall application has been improved as well. The updated version of the application is available for free and can be downloaded now from the App Store. Read More

Google's Bookstore is Live, But How Does it Stack Up?
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Dec 2010 19:21:48 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/06/2010 at 11:21am | by J Keirn-Swanson It was inevitable that it would come to this, but ultimately we all knew this was the direction Google was headed with their book project. Not simply scanning and indexing various libraries holdings, but moving toward e-readership was always in the cards for the search giant. And with their announcement today, Google moves into direct bookstore competition with Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and more. Having learned from their predecessors, Google's new book offering features multiple platform reading and wireless syncing of position. Start a book on your laptop, continue on your phone, pick up where you left off on your tablet. Anywhere you have internet access you can read, while books downloaded to your Google Books (iTunes link) app can be read offline. But how do the locations stack up for Apple users? The strengths and weaknesses of Google Books' site depends on how Read More
Google eBookstore Opens, iPhone/iPad App Released
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Dec 2010 18:33:08 UTC +00:00
It has been quite a day for Google, with the unveiling of their latest Android firmware, a second Nexus phone and now, Google eBooks!  An eBook store run by the search giant has been on the cards for a while, and its official launch will likely see some concerned faces at Amazon, B&N and Apple too. The store contains around three million titles right now, with many available for free in the public domain, and the remainder being pay-titles provided by various publishers. The Google Books (iTunes link) app is available now for the iPhone and the iPad and both feature selectable font size, typeface, justification and line spacing, plus a night mode and search function.  Because the eBook store is linked to your Google account – it’s where your downloaded books will be stored – your bookmarks will be synced across all devices so you can pick up where you Read More
Google Officially Launches Google Books App
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Dec 2010 19:30:06 UTC +00:00
Google launches its very own eBook service and it may officially blow all other options out of the water. Just in case you needed another eReader option for your iOS device, Google has officially launched its virtual bookstore. Called simply Google eBooks, the cloud-based service is promising to be a more open-source offering than the offerings from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or even Apple’s own iBooks. “We designed Google eBooks to be open,” said Google in a statement. “Many devices are compatible with Google eBooks—everything from laptops to netbooks to tablets to smartphones to e-readers. With the new Google eBooks Web Reader, you can buy, store and read Google eBooks in the cloud. That means you can access your ebooks like you would messages in Gmail or photos in Picasa—using a free, password-protected Google account with unlimited ebooks storage. “In addition to a full-featured web reader, free apps for Android and Read More
Google Books app feels rushed, disappoints
Calendar16 Mon, 06 Dec 2010 20:05:00 UTC +00:00
Google Books finally went live in App Store and we here at TUAW couldn't wait to give it a try. Unfortunately, we should have. Google should have spent more time refining and polishing this app before releasing it. Google Books is a bit of a half-baked disappointment. Let's start with the big issues. The application doesn't do landscape. Personally, I'm not completely adverse to portrait book reading -- after all, it gives you the most room to read each page on the screen -- but why doesn't Google give me the choice? I often like flipping back and forth between my books and ongoing solitaire games (I know, I know, but that's what I do, and 4.2.1 makes it easy). Having to re-orient my iPad to the lap-unfriendly portrait orientation is just annoying. A two-page side-by-side layout seems to be a given in the e-reader world. I'm stunned it's not already Read More
