Calendar16 Thu, 12 Apr 2012 07:59:54 UTC +00:00
Google Currents is no longer a U.S.-only app and now everyone who has access to the Apple AppStore or Google Play can get it and enjoy news and magazines in a whole new way. Alongside this international rollout, Google also made sure there are local partners on board, including such publications as The Guardian in the UK, LaStampa in Italy, Financial Times Deutschland in Germany, ABC News in Australia, Neue Zürcher Zeitung in Switzerland and Hindustan Times in India. Moreover, all of the content can be easily translated to other languages by tapping the globe icon – Google Translate will start, allowing you to select one of 38 supported languages. But that’s not all. Thanks to the new “dynamic sync” feature, new content is “dynamically” delivered, using a minimum of your phone or tablet’s battery, bandwidth and storage. This is especially handy for those who travel on planes and trains as Read More
Editor’s note: Contributor Brad Spirrison is the managing editor of mobile app discovery services Appolicious, AndroidApps.com and AppVee. With this post, he continues an annual tradition of picking the best iOS apps of the year. It’s telling that Apple chose an app that debuted more than 14 months ago, Instagram, as its “iPhone App of the Year” for 2011. This should not imply that there was a shortage of quality and groundbreaking apps released this year. Far from it. From social magazines to music discovery apps to console-quality games that players can hold in the palms of their hands, there are hundreds of new titles in the iTunes App Store that will inform, organize, and entertain virtually anyone who owns an iOS device. As more choices become available to different kinds of consumers, however, it’s difficult to identify the undisputed champions of the app world. We picked 20 of the best Read More

Google has a new service to help you out with reading articles from your favorite websites and RSS feeds. Google Currents is an iPhone application that takes news feeds from selected websites and presents them in an interactive magazine format. There’s also a section for trending topics, which pulls multiple articles for a single topic into it’s own list for your reading pleasure. Calendar16 Sun, 11 Dec 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
We had an explosion of news apps this week. Zite added an iPhone version of its app, so did Flipboard. Now Google has joined the party with Google Currents, a free app that creates a magazine for you based on sites that you like, as well as content from particular bloggers and commentators. The app is universal for iOS devices. When you open Currents for the first time you're taken to a setup page. You can select from 'Publisher editions', which include sources like Forbes, Popular Science, Fast Company and many more. Those magazines may include video, animations, maps and social streams. Then Currents provides what it calls 'trending editions', using Google algorithms to find the top stories in categories like sports, science and entertainment. You can also incorporate blogs or feeds, and Google provides a helpful list, or you can select your own favorites. Currents can be used to read Read More
