Google Drive and Android app go live
Calendar16 Tue, 24 Apr 2012 16:45:48 UTC +00:00
Google Drive is no longer a secret, as the Google Drive Android app is now live in the Play Store and the description gives us a great idea of what to expect. As expected, Google Drive will be a Dropbox and Box competitor, as you’ll get some free cloud storage space to store your files. The official announcement went live a few seconds ago and it offers 5 GB of storage for free. You can also buy additional storage for a fee and this includes 100 GB for $4.99 a month, dramatically cheaper than the competition. The app’s description also gives us some solid details. This is an evolution of Google Docs, so you can collaborate on the files in your Google Drive account. You can also open up multiple file types (including video) in a browser. Naturally, you’ll also have strong search capabilities including the ability to search through scanned Read More

Google Docs for Android adds real-time collaboration
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Feb 2012 19:51:54 UTC +00:00
Android smartphone and tablet owners can collaborate on documents from their devices with the updated version of Google Docs for Android, released on Wednesday. The software, supporting Android 2.1 devices and up, adds the same real-time collaboration found in the full web version of Google Docs on a laptop or desktop. This real-time interaction in documents is another example of how mobile devices allow people to work together from practically any connected location. With the new Google Docs, owners of a document can invite others to view or even edit a document. Different authors input appears in various colors to identify who is writing or changing what text. Google also tweaked the application interface to better support smaller screen and added improved formatting options: “For example, you can pinch to zoom and focus on a specific paragraph or see the whole document at a glance. Google updated its Google Docs app for Android to allow users to access their files even when there’s no Internet connection around. Then, once you download some of the files and change them while offline, simply tap Update and everyone else who can access your documents (or just you) we’ll see the difference. Moreover, the application will automatically update your offline files when you’re on Wi-Fi. The second big important change is improved support for Android tablets, with Google Docs finally offering a decent (high-resolution) reading experience. You can swipe left and right to flip between pages, or use the slider at the bottom to page ahead quickly. Unfortunately, native document editing (not HTML) is still missing and without it, well, Google Docs is still pretty useless for most of us. Not sure why it takes so long to include this feature (since it’s by far the most demanded by the Read More
The Top 30 Android Apps And Games Of 2011

After having looked into the best iOS apps and games of 2011, Spirrison now turns his attention to the best Android apps of the year. Android apps come in all shapes and sizes – literally. Unlike iOS applications, which are basically created for two form factors, Android apps need to be developed with dozens (if not hundreds) of device-types in mind. This is on top of the inconsistent operating system releases still mucking things up. While all of this fragmentation is a headache for developers, ignoring a platform with 50 percent market share would ultimately lead to their peril. Lately I’ve been asked which Android software I’m using so I directed a friend to “my 30 essential Android apps,” the post I wrote about two months ago. However, not everyone likes my list – they want something more structured. Then I prepared the “must-have Android apps” list which goes through different kinds of Android software, helping people decided what they need for what purpose. I went into details in that article and that’s also not that cool for everyone – so here’s something in between, a structured list of apps divided by categories. Browser(s) Social networking apps Mobile office client RSS & News IM & VoIP Utilities There you have it. Hopefully you’ll find something useful here. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next Read More
Google has updated two of its Android apps, Google Reader and Google Docs, making them look more Ice Cream Sandwich-like. The first of the two apps looks pretty much the same as the previous version, featuring very few changes: there’s the fancy swipe left/right navigation and the ability to share articles via Google+ (rather than Google Buzz). When it comes to Google Docs, the situation is pretty different. The new version looks better and is even more optimized for tablets. Then there’s improved video playback, support for both portrait and landscape modes, while information about your documents is now more easily found. Finally, sharing options now include auto-complete… Updates to both Google Reader and Google Docs are readily available in the Android Market. Heck if you have these apps running on your smartphone or tablet, you’ve probably already updated them. If you don’t have them – Android Market links are below Read More
Access your online documents from your Android tablet with Google Docs. The app lets you do everything you can do with Google Docs in a browser, including creating spreadsheets and word processing documents. Google Docs is a pretty solid way of reading and editing documents on the fly. It’s filled with all the great options you get in the web version like sharing documents with others, adding collaborators and downloading them to the tablet. It also functions as a free Internet-based word processor and spreadsheet maker, so you can actually use the touch keyboard or a Bluetooth one to do real work with the app. All of your documents then get saved online, and you can access them through a browser. As useful as it is though, Google Docs isn’t ideal for a tablet and feels a bit clunky. It’s great for keeping you tied into your work, but trying to Read More

Google Docs updated for Android tablets | Android Central

Google Docs just got itself a nice little update. The big one for us is that it's now optimized for tablets -- and that makes a big difference for how much time we're willing to spend looking at a spreadsheet on a smaller screen. Here's the full changelog: Snag it in the market, or with the links after the break. Read More
Google has updated its Google Docs app for Android to make it look better on Honeycomb tablets. The application is said to have an “entirely new design” that takes advantage of the larger screen space on tablets. The layout now consists of three panels, including filters and collections, document list, and document details. From here you will be able to see a thumbnail to preview a document and all of its details (i.e. who can view or edit a document) before opening it. Moreover, this release also brings improved sharing experience with auto-complete, support for both landscape and portrait modes, and improved video playback. Finally, these new features are also translated in 46 languages. Google Docs for Android remains a free app and you can grab it from a link below (in case you still don’t have it running on your Android smartphone or tablet). The Android Market may not have as many apps as the iPhone App Store yet, but there are still more than enough to be overwhelmed, and it continues to grow at a breakneck pace. To help you sort through them all, here is my latest list of the 20 most useful Android apps (this is an update of my 2010 Android list). I’ve also recently updated my list of the most useful iPhone apps and you’ll notice several of the same apps on both lists. Remember that I primarily had business professionals in mind when making this list and also keep in mind that this is a snapshot in time. The Android platform is developing so quickly that I guarantee my home screen will look different a month from now. Still, here’s my list of tried-and-true Android apps that I can highly recommend. Google as an app developer has released various applications in the Android Market and some of these come pre-installed on most Android devices – like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search. But others have to be downloaded from Android Market; we have compiled a list of these apps that have been developed by Google. The number comes around 40 apps, although we have tried our best, but we might have missed a few. But not all applications are available in every country and every device; some are regional apps as they support only certain languages or certain apps might support only few device types. So, the best way to check if one of these apps is available in your country is to go to the phone/tablet based Market app and try searching for that particular app – if it comes in the search results than you are good to go. In that time, the development team behind the project has been hard at work introducing new features, improving cross-platform compatibility and adding support for some 45 new languages. It's that time of year again, and whether you're packing to go back to school or packing someone else to send them off for some higher learning (and getting yourself a little peace and quiet in the bargain), you'll find Android is there ready to lend a helping hand.  Every student needs a way to connect with friends and family back home as well as tools to help them study, and Android has shaped up quite nicely and can provide both.  And you can even have a little fun with it while you're at it.  We've put together a nice little collection of apps, and the hardware we recommend to run them -- hit the break and have a look! Let's face the facts, no one wants to be the dumb one in the college conversation. By keeping dictionary.com installed on your Android device you can simply launch the app, type Read More

We all know how versatile and powerful today's smartphones are, with numerous games and apps showing off their fun sides. But what about the boring stuff? What about when you really need to edit potentially libellous statements out of a Word document in a hurry? Android has a wealth of productivity tools at its disposal, ranging from free and simple text editors and "to do" lists up to impressively feature-packed and rather costly suites of document management apps that promise PowerPoint and Excel editing on your mobile. Official options are a little lacking, though. There's no proper version of Open Office on Android, for example, while rival smartphone maker Microsoft is obviously a little reluctant to launch any official MS Office apps on Android as well. Fortunately for business-minded users, Android has many third-party options offering similar collections of fully compatible office apps, optical character readers, scanners and converters, all ready Read More

Business Insider’s Steve Kovach does a great job of keeping everyone up to date on hot new apps; and since his favorable review of the HTC Incredible 2 caused me to buy one last week, I thought I’d follow in Steve’s footsteps and share the top 10 Android apps that make my professional life a little easier: Dropbox - has become the go-to site for cloud-based file storage and the Android app only adds to its usefulness.  The files you upload to Dropbox from your personal computer automatically sync with the Android app and vice versa, which means access to the documents you need, anytime anywhere.  (Price: Free for up to 2 GB of storage) Google Docs- In addition to being able to collaboratively edit documents and spreadsheets, the Docs app doubles as a scanner. Takeaway: The official Google Docs app for Android has finally been released. Despite one drawback, Jack Wallen calls the app a major win for the Android platform. I use the Google Docs cloud-based tool for a lot of ventures. I use it at my desktop, my laptop, and now that the Google Docs Android app has been released, I can use it on my mobile, which is great because I’m on the go a lot. Writing technical articles and fiction is my primary career, so it’s important for me to be able to access and edit my documents at the drop of a hat. Many Google Docs users also have this need. It used to be a struggle to use Google Docs on a mobile device, but with the release of the official Android app, all is right in Google Docs user land. Once installed, you’ll find the Docs application (the Read More

| 05/25/2011 The easiest way to share my favorite Android apps, for the HTC ThunderBolt as well as the other devices I review, is to show you my homescreens. Like the iPhone, Android phones allow you to place shortcuts to your favorite apps on your various homescreens. Unlike the iPhone, you can also include widgets that give you fast access to information without opening apps. Above you’ll see five of the seven screens I use daily on my ThunderBolt. These are my favorite Android apps and while there will be a few additions and removals over time, these apps have earned a spot on my home screen. On the main screen of the HTC ThunderBolt you will see my most used apps and widgets. First off you’ll notice the HTC Sense Weather and Clock Widget. This tells me the time, weather and date. Google Docs for Android makes the service even more convenient than ever. The fact that it's so new, though, means the app comes with its share of technical problems. For those who aren't familiar with Google Docs, it's a service that's connected to your Google account that's used for creating and storing documents. The app syncs up with your Google account so that youcan access all of these documents from your phone. You can also create new documents on the go, savethem and then pull them up on your computer later on. The app offers everything that its mother site does, but in such a way that is simplified and compacted. I was pleased to see that the app had a search option that made finding my documents easy. Terrible I won't get into the AS card thing as I don't really understand, but this is a useless application. The 'documents' section is a plain text notepad, and a bit of a silly one at that (two layers deep before you can start typing). The 'spreadsheets' section is laughably simple, and patently unusable (I actually couldn't find a way to added columns easily). I just didn't even bother with the presentation bit. Save your time; find a wifi signal and edit online with a desktop user agent setting on your browser.

It's just the website encapsulated in an app I really expect better software from Google. I wouldn't expect Google to just take their website, frame it in an app-embedded browser and call it a product like many of the crap apps on the market. I was hoping to get a nice Android app that I could use to update my budget spreadsheet on the go. I'm very disappointed.

Very basic The main problem i have with this app is how basic it is. You can do very minimal in terms of editing other than just typing text. For example, i changed a number value on a spreadsheet, but the app converted it to standard text. I had to go on my browser and fix the formatting. There needs to be a lot of work done to this app for it to be comparable to something like docs to go

Worthless You constantly have to log in for one - Google, when I pick a hard to guess password I want you to remember it for me, if I constantly have to type it on a small device, then I will be forced to pick an easy to remember (and crack) password - so when it does get hacked that is your fault. Stop prompting for password all the time.

Not Enough to be Useful I heavily rely on Google Docs for collaboration between multiple parties. Using a tablet, this app has become difficult to work with as the text is far too small to be easily visible. Preferences for increasing text size would be welcome. Moreover, this app's most disappointing flaw is its lack of styling. I cannot control the style of text or use features such as bullets or links, making it difficult to maintain document style guidelines. Its only saving grace is faster response than using a browser.

Underpowered app is useless in actuality I love Google Docs and try to use it for everything. I've recently got a Honeycomb tablet, but quickly found out that the Android version of Evernote can't edit really (can't use multiple levels of lists?). Google Docs' app is the same way. With a tablet, you'd expect to get to edit full documents, but Google Docs is line-by-line. The overall interfaces are clunky, embedded versions of the web browse'd mobile site. This is useless for note taking, authoring, or editing. Just spot fixes and viewing. Poor.

Nothing makes me more livid in this app than not being able to download my documents. Having to use the web interface with the browser in desktop mode to download files is ridiculous. You can't even choose a document from Docs when attaching files in Gmail... useless. Sure, you can Open a file, but this doesn't preserve the file name.

Yet another example of why Google should stick to making websites. This app is horrific. It looks nice up until you get to the point where you're actually making a document. Where are all of the formatting bars? The font is WAY small (even on a 10.1 tablet) and the app is void of anything resembling options. Here Google had the perfect opportunity to sell us on their ability to present a full featured OS that includes amazing office capabilities and all they give us is a horrific notepad.

I really do feel as though Google has wasted a perfect opportunity to create something very much needed on the Android (particularly Honeycomb) OS: a good docs/spreadsheet editing suite. The editor...is...horrendous. I would use any other free note-taking app before I'd ever use this editor. What's more, the excel desktop version on my tablet won't even let me scroll, let alone use the other editing features. What's the point of having a place for my docs if I can't properly edit them?

Even after the update the app is as useless as it was. It's buggy, doesn't do anything to more than the webapp. You can't bold, underline, etc. The application is buggy, Not smooth, will duplicate lines. I'm not going to continue enumerating why it sucks. Try it out yourself.
Eric 2.0 stars
Excruciatingly slow and useless on my Samsung Galaxy S because it won't allow me to edit documents (browser not supported), but then of course you could question the use of doing that on a "tiny" screen in the first place. Much better on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for viewing documents, but again editing is a pain because of the unconventional way (to me, at least) the app selects and highlights content for editing. Also, typing on a tablet is no fun at all... Overall conclusion: great viewer, lousy editor!

I am really disappointed in this app. I have been a Google Doc user from the start and was expecting better android integration. The document edition is flaky at best: -the selection is inaccurate -the text you edit does not refresh automatically leaving you with the impression that you have not edited it -The formatting functionalities seem to have been stripped from it... Really bad implementation of a good product. (used on my Samsung Galaxy tab v10.1)

It is a great app if you want to view your docs. It renders properly, and even includes comments. While editing, however, the comments cannot be seen. In addition, it randomly merges the current paragraph with the one above it, and cannot be stopped. A document with multiple paragraphs gets compressed into a single paragraph, and would need editing from a browser to work properly. Apart from that bug, collaborative editing works properly. Finally, I would like to see offline sync.

Useless because you can't move to SD card I figured I give this a try, once I got Google Docs on my PC to work in English (the first time I logged on to GDocs it was in polish) but remove the app straight away since I couldn't move it to the SDCard. Bad enough my phone came with app I'll never use and none of them can be uninstalled or moved to the SDCard. Change that and I' give it another try. 1 star NO move to SDCard.

Can't save docs locally hence not good for a quick look at files, internet connection and time is required to open a doc.
Shane 0.0 stars
This app is terrible, which is perplexing seeing as how it is a core Google app on a core Google OS (honeycomb) on a Motorola/Google reference device. Half the time it doesn't open correctly. Then, when I can get a doc open, editing is a nightmare. There are very few editing or sharing options, and navigating through the text is a clunky experience, at best. It's better to use a simple text editor locally on the Xoom and then upload the version to Google docs. It's disappointing.
Retro 0.0 stars
Sure, the app looks new and shiny and I'm sure all that comes with its massive file size, but in all the work they put in to gussy it up, they forgot to acknowledge the Shift and Fn keys on my physical keyboard for my Samsung Edge. That's sort of important. Also, disconnection from 4G disables editing altogether (as opposed to the old method of synchronizing all changes made when reconnected, which should certainly be possible with unshared documents, at least)?
Danny 0.0 stars

I appreciate having a free cloud service for documents. Microsoft, however, currently has nothing to fear from Google Docs. Added offline feature is nice. I probably do not use to full extent since I do not collaborate on documents.
Jon 0.0 stars
This app is excellent. I recently switched over from DropBox to using inSync and Google Docs, and it's been a great decision; you get all the same functionality, plus in-browser doc editing. Really nice. This app allows you to do all that on your phone *and* have things available offline (and edit offline, too!). It makes long underground subway rides with no signal much more productive.
Andrey 0.0 stars
Could you add settings to open web view at first, and after that, if user wants to edit document, edit view? I edit documents on PC and just read them on android. So, opening documents in edit screen isn't convenient. But rather, make a special button that allows editing in edit screen. Without activating this button tap on screen don't show keyboard (it's easy to mistake with pressing on screen while scrolling it)

This is a revision of my previous review. The latest release is a huge improvement in Google Docs. However, there are still many features in the full version that are not included that should be added to make this a true companion to the regular Google Docs. I have not had time to play with this version in depth, but I wanted to modify the disparaging remarks I had left previously. This is an improvement over the original edition. Only time will tell how much of an improvement. Keep at it Google! There are still things to add.
Jassob 0.0 stars
I like to have all school documents and other kind of notes available everywhere and I have yet to find a better service than this! True, editing documents through the app is not a great experience, but it is capable of saving notes and to create a new document isn't as bad as editing an existing one... But I still love the app!

good but not great. spreadsheets have poor row click detection and zooming in only makes it worse. docs require too many clicks to edit.
Benjamin T 0.0 stars
This app is potentially great but it really takes too much time from the moment you launch the app to the moment you can start editing a new document. This makes the app useless for rapid note taking compare to other apps like "mobisle notes" (which can also sync with google docs).

Typical Google. Slow and laggy. Why don't you hire some software engineers like from Microsoft and code some proper apps? 1) It is unbearably laggy on ICS tablet that scrolling gives me a headache. 2) The preview feature stopped working, 3) Will never upload a doc from my tablet. Its always failed. 4) Has .0005% of the features of iWork for iPad.

Finally, the office suite thhat should have been here since the start. Works rather well on my Eee Pad, but it needs keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+I for italics) in order to be complete. Might aso be nice to have a page setting mode as well.

Was a temp glitch that I can't write documents in landscape keyboard. Gone away at present. Also an issue that for irregular files like .kdb you can not upload/download. Good improvements though.

This is almost what I need but not quite. I would like if they would make it able to add a document offline on my tablet when I am traveling and then when I connect to WiFi it would sync up for me instead of saying "error creating document" and being useless as an editor while on the road. Also more document editing capability in both the Android application and in the web application would put this over the top for me to replace MS Word. I want to replace having a laptop and just having a tab with keyboard for travel. Too many devices to carry. :)

Docs is a lovely service! The app keeps on getting better. It's nowadays pretty sweet, although it stills needs more work. The UI is kinda cumbersome and slow, even on my dual-core phone. I think it should be just as good-looking and smooth S Google's other apps. Continued efforts needs to be focused on the editing. This last update brought us real-time (finally!! :-D) editing and free text editing with basic styling. Awesome!! Longing for support for spreadsheets, strike through and headers. Good job!

I love the fact that I can view and edit my docs on the go from both my phone and my tablet, however a feature that I remember using I can no longer find. I have the HP eprint app. On my tablet which allowed me to print. This would be a perfect addition to this app, making it even more useful. Not sure if this is an update I can expect to see with ICS, if no it needs to be. Other than that I'm pleased.

With support for rich text formatting and a nice ribbon, Docs is a small step closer to Polaris Office. Still waiting on support for inserting/editing tables, inserting/resizing images, and changing font sizes though. Spreadsheets are functional for a mobile version, but awkward. Presentations are at a very basic display level. Nice start but lots of improvements needed on all 3 mobile apps.

Docs now has the basic rich text formatting aids. Put in the table support and insert pictures capability and it should be close enough to Polaris office. And yes... offline support is important

Throughly unimpressed with the update. Looks cleaner, and formats on my droid better, sure, but not with the phone keyboard; only works with the on-screen one, which poses a problem. Now there also seems to be serious trouble when trying to capitalize words or delete entire lines. Hoping the problems will be fixed, as this is a good program otherwise.

The new elegantly simple document editor has won another star from me. I use the Gdocs app several times a day and previously is was limited to "read only" as editing was so atrocious. I'm glad to see that serious attention is again being paid to the Gdocs app for Android. Feature request: Adding a shortcut to a specific document on the home page.

Lack of rich editing tools for ANDROID tablets is a major disappointment. Waited so long for any sort of editing capabilities, only to find that some of the real basics of word processing (justification? c'mon!!!) are left on the cutting room floor. Pull your finger out google, you're soooo much better than this.

I use Google Docs on my phone for editing show notes and the outline for a podcast that I do. I use documents with tables to edit. Prior to the update, I was able to edit the table in the document used for the outline. The update to the app removed the capability to do so. Disappointing!

The Google Docs app is mostly useful for viewing. Edit capabilities are an exercise in frustration and patience due mostly to the limitations of the stock web browser. Chome Beta in Desktop Mode allows editing documents and spreadsheets with far more ease.

Been using this app for several months; as a heavy GDocs user, it is invaluable. The new update improves the UI in Docs but Spreadsheets remain minimally functional. Update: learned this morning that the app no longer supports Google Cloud Print; unless, you open the Web version from within the app. An annoyance, but still a great app. Cloud Print from app would be really nice.

I'm not sure if it's just my phone (HTC Evo Shift) or the app itself, but it is a tad annoying to have to hold down the shift & FN buttons just to get a capital letter or symbol/number, when a simple tap in ~every other program~ allows that. I'm happy I have quick access to my documents, but I'd also like easy editing, as I type fast & it sucks noticing, a paragraph in, that your sentences lack capital letters & have the letter k where apostrophes should've been.

Making a lot of files available offline is time consuming, no easy way to do it other than one at a time, and I have 100's. Also files are ordered by date by default, which is not practical for 100s of files. Collections is not as good as folders, I deleted a collection, but all the files still exist which makes finding the file I need difficult. Can only delete a file at a time. I have hundreds to delete, and have given up. Dropbox is a lot better.

Tablets are the ideal device to use for presentations and the ability to easily create them, in a well thought out and seamless way, is a necessity for the Android platform. Docs should be a shinning example of the very best that Android has to offer. Sadly it is clunky and feature poor. Double down on Docs and make it what the Android platform needs it to be.

The last main update to Google Docs was fantastic - it brought much better controls, a better interface, and most importantly - a vastly improved editing environment for editing or creating new docs, spreadsheets, etc. But it needs more - specifically: spell checking, basic formatting additions, styles (Header1, Header2, Normal, etc), and just in general more document editing features you expect from any word processor or spreadsheet app. Keep it up, Google!

Honestly, I usually vouch for Google, but they really screwed up Android. They started with the Linux kernel and put a delicate and very unstable User interface around it. They didn't seem to set any system requirements or outlines, so sensors don't work as they are supposed to. Practically every app that does something useful is based on an active high speed internet connection, this one is no exception. It freezes up with the loading circle spinning in front of the Google login screen. That's it. No editing. I will continue playing with it, but Google, please know that not everybody has 3G yet. There are WiFi users out there!

I figured since the android market was Google based, and the Docs is google based, then the Android app for the Google docs would frolic along in the cyber world hand in hand enjoying perfect unity and harmony. That is not really the case, along with some of the other concerns mentioned in the other reviews, I find it discouraging that my HTC EVO 4G doesn't automatically load phone numbers into the dialer like pretty much everything else on my phone does. I created a list of my clients in Google docs fully expecting this function to be there, and to my dismay when I touch a phone number in docs get get nothing

I used to use google docs a lot but recently using it on my Transformer with the keyboard dock has become utterly impossible. Tex input t is incredibly laggy. Even did a complete system reset and reinstalled. App is so laggy that it is more trouble than it is worth. I hope this gets fixed soon. Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

In a word: awesome. Features convenient, simple, yet useful viewing and editing. I'd like the ability to upload/download files. Unlike Polaris Office (standard on Transformer), Google Docs actually saves stuff. SOOO much better, thanks for listening!!

When you click edit on a spreadsheet, it often jumps to the line above or below and doesn't open the correct line. So frustrating! And the next cell arrow often doesn't jump to the next cell. And it'd be nice to have the view adjust to show where you're typing. Pls fix!

There is something about Google's app design that is tentative. It seems that they put in the minimal effort into these apps to give the functionality needed. They tentatively tip toe around Apple who go full force and create apps like Pages which is a really great word processor. Microsoft's mobile effort is really great from the limited time I've had with it as well. Docs feels like a glorified text editor in comparison. Google need to dive in fully and give their everything to bring their suite of software up to standards which blow away all the competition not only on their own platform (not difficult, especially in terms of productivity software) but their competitors.

I don't know if most people have a file browser, and one should probably be integrated into this app for uploading specific files. Also, and it may be something else, but since installing this app, I can only pull the notification pane halfway down the screen. I love you Google, and I can't wait to see what's next!

I'm dissapointed with Drive.. No way to upload multiple files at once, no instant upload, expensive to add more storage, interface is a clone of Google Docs, no way to create folders! Missing a Linux client..

The Windows client is great, and integration with Android works well, but the lack of a Linux client makes it a bit useless for me. Come on Google, all your engineers use Linux, why the lack of support?

Editing is much easier now for Documents. The controls at the top have made Document editing much much easier and thus better. Editing for Spreadsheets though is still deplorable. I hope it improves sooner rather than later. I have to use Office Suite Pro to be able to reasonably edit Spreadsheets.

The integration with other Google service is great, and navigation in browser is pretty sweet. Dropbox on Andriods has the option of automatically uploading pictures, videos and audio recordings. "Offline files" should be synced locally when updated, and the document viewer should be able to view spreadsheets and power points instead of using the mobile web viewer (the word doc viewing is awesome like it has been since the last version).

Only used briefly, enough to discover so many things amiss - like the ability to create Folders, for instance, is such a glaring omission. And every pic you sync is a separate notification! Argh. This thing has a lot of potential.. but when will Google see it.

It just looks like Google Docs with Google Drive skin really. I guess the added feature is that you can store any file up to 5GB for free. Not bad. Not awesome either. I hope Google is planning to overhaul the look to be consistent with the ICS style they're pushing these days.

I've been waiting for such a long time for this... BUT - maybe I'm stupid (or blind) but even if I make file "Available offline" it's not synchronizing with my device... It just download the file into my Android phone and that's all... When I update the file - it doesn't copy/synchronize with server but it completely vanish!!! (I was looking for deleting my dropbox account I'm using for synchronizing files for apps - like keepass etc, but I'm not sure if this is the right time :( ) But google - keep on working... And I hope, very soon, we'll love this! ;)

Google+, Google Drive, Hotmail et al. These apps are NOT Xperia friendly. These bloat apps (Facebook, Maps & more) really hog up a lot of memory on RAM starved Xperia phones. Such a shame that these massive apps cannot be moved to SD. Need the space for the all new ICS upgrade due to arrive soon! Will give it a try for a while but if more RAM is needed for ICS it's bye bye Google Drive as I've only got 63mb left even after I've cleared all cashed files & browser history.

So it's finally here. It's missing several of the features that it's more polished cousins have, but overall not a bad start. I'm sure more and better is on the way. Decent. Will be a great replacement for, or at least addition to, my Dropbox account. A few options would make this better: 1. The option for PIN Security (or something similar) to open the app 2. The ability to move documents between folders from the app 3. Add the same sharing options that are available when viewing the doc on the web (i.e. ability to share with a link or mark the document as public) 4. Ability to choose fonts within the document editor *Also, related indirectly to this particular app, in the integrated Windows application, it would be nice to be able to change the sharing settings of files/folders without having to go to the web app.

I have had a quick look at this but I can't see a last modified date anywhere.. If I upload a file with a last modified date and time of say 23/4 9.07 pm it should keep this date as well as the date/time uploaded to Google drive. I like this app, but I have 2 issues: 1) The app needs Honeycomb optimizations. It was clearly designed for 2.x devices with 3.x support as an afterthought. Fragments, renderscript and other Honeycomb optimizations would greatly improve the experience for tablets. 2) When updating fields in spreadsheets, more often than not, linked fields will not update until the "Refresh" button is clicked. This should happen automatically in realtime without having to tell the app to refresh.

Upgraded Google Docs for the online store. Was disappointed to be told my drive was not yet available. Registered to be notified when my drive would be ready. Within 24 hours I got an email confirming my drive was ready. Happy with that but sad to find out that the app could still not access my drive. Very poor implementation from Google. And then there are the very one sided terms and conditions which give Google full ownership of your files! Sticking with Dropbox for now.

Definitely needs integrated photo viewing and thumbnail previews like Drop box, so images don't have to be downloaded and then opened in the gallery. I enjoy Google's consistent ability to come up with a product that rivals that of other major software companies like Apple and Microsoft, and this web app is no different than Play itself. Step 1: Create a netbook where the OS is online.... Step 2: Create a music distribution system where I can store all music and buy more online... Step 3: Create a file transfer system where I can store and edit all of my files online... If there ever happens to be anything that Google needs beta-tested, I will always be happy to do so.

OK. I decided to try it. Was hoping that it would be more efficient than DropBox on my device. I don't really see a difference in performance. But... Offline files are really badly done. In DropBox, you mark a file as a favorite, it is cached locally (and available offline). If you edit that file, the moment you get back online, it gets synced with the originals in the cloud. This doesn't work (or not in any way simple enough for me to identify) with Drive. Key feature lacking. Until this works better, I'm back to DropBox. Oh... and DropBox integrates seamlessly in Ubuntu (Nautilus) file manager as well... Nuf said.

Good start, but it's not as flexible as Dropbox just yet and there is no path to attain free upgrades in space, which is a shame (although understandable). My biggest gripe is that there is no way to export files to specific folders on my SDcard as far as I can tell. I can open files directly from the drive, but I can't download files to my phone in a traditional manner. My second biggest gripe is the TOS. I understand that the licensing terms need to be widespread due to OCR and other translation/transcoding options that take place on Google Drive, but I'd rather they specify exactly WHAT they need the license for instead of taking a completely encompassing license for everything that is uploaded to be used in any manner that Google sees fit. I'm a photographer and I don't feel completely comfortable uploading my work when the terms are so crazy. Aside from that, everything seems to be working well.

Hopefully since they have a usable API for third party apps, someone else will add this.

Was expected much more from Google on this. I love and use Evernote and I was hoping this would completely replace it. Sadly, it is missing too many features to make FULLY switching to Drive worthwhile. Evernote runs off the SD card, Drive does not and takes up more space with less features. Evernote is also much faster in syncing and retrieving files.

As a google services user I kinda expected my picassa folders to appear in DRIVE but they don't ... that's a big downer as all my phones and tablets use auto upload via gPlus synced to picassa so it seems logical for those to appear here. Other than that ill stick with dropbox as its better featured and offers photo auto upload too...

A while back I became a PAYING customer of Google online storage. I pay a yearly fee to increase my storage across Google's services. Now, I find out that Google Drive is excluded from my account and I have to pay more than I was paying before!!! Thank you, but NO THANK YOU! I already have a free Dropbox account with more than 10GB of free storage (through referrals) so I have absolutely no incentive to "Drop" Dropbox (excuse the pun) and use Google Drive. Nice way of screwing a paying customer!!!

I really really like Google Drive. I do agree with some other writers that it can use some refinement in the form of file management, but I can live with it! Being one of the first to use it, and it is FREE (5gb), it's a perfect utility for me. Awesome as it is now, and I look forward to even greater things in the future!

So far it looks like Google Drive does just about everything I need for sharing files between phone and PC (and later this year probably tablet as well), though not all of it perfectly. I've also started using Google Docs recently for longer text documents - previously I was writing mostly in EverNote - so the integration with that is welcome. So is - on the PC side - the option to view a long range of file types, including images, videos (using the same player as YouTube as far as I can see), assorted text formats and many others, directly in the browser version of Drive. Batch upload, its supposed absence I noticed some reviews complaining about, is actually possible, if certainly not in the most obvious way. If you use a file manager, image viewer etc. that allow you to select multiple files (I just tested with QuickView), you can do so and then share them to Google Drive that way. Although so far I haven't found a way to avoid them ending up in the root folder, which likely necessitates some manual clean-up work afterwards from the PC interface. So obviously this is definitely an area that will hopefully get some needed attention.

I was really keen to get Google Drive because the biggest complaint about Dropbox was a lack of making entire folders offline and I was just hoping that Drive will have this feature. But it is like a bad dream, it is not possible in Drive either! Is it really so difficult to include this feature into the client? I just do not want to select for example 30 files one by one to make them available offline on my phone. That is really silly. Apart from that I like Google Drive and their pricing policy but please Google, make this feature available!!

Good app and makes it really easy to share from my desktop(s) to the web to my phone seamlessly. All folders wouldn't sync to phone for some reason, but I could see the docs using the "recent" view. Uninstall/Reinstall fixed the issue and all folders are now visible.

Google again makes everything so much easier. Great app that works perfectly with my laptop and phone. Quick and easy uploads/downloads, saves space on my phone and love the ability of creating multiple types of folders for each file type. Highly recommend if you use a lot of files and have a lot of documents on your phone or pc.

I like this app but missing one feature.. I would like an option to download a file directly to the phone.. So that I can access this file from other applications.. Dropbox got the export feature! The app is great and light weighted. But there is no way to display the total capacity and used capacity from the app itself. Unlike Dropbox the app can display the total / used capacity under "Setting" In the app, it also didn't display the file size of a file. This is very useful information when user want to do house keep the Drive on the mobile phone. Hope Google can consider to add these in the future update. Thanks.

Here are some things that I suggest. Ability to create folders, delete, move and etc. Just like a normal file manager. Thumbnails for pictures and videos that would work for most know formats specially MOD video files.. Also, instead of having to open each picture one by one I would like to see a system like drop box where you touch one picture and to see the next all you have to do is swipe your finger just like in the phone's gallery app. And ability to choose HD video quality when watching.

Its good for what it is now. But I know this will be great, over time. Next update should include thumbnail images, so we know what file is what, without downloading it and opening it.

The Mac application is awesome, but the Android version still have some holes. Need to be able to batch edit/upload and upload pictures automatically. But it was a nice start and I am already using it instead of Dropbox.

There's no way to copy files from Drive to folders you need. I can download them to view them 'offline' but it's impossible to copy downloaded files to another folder or find folder where they are stored. I hate when I'm being treated like a dumb apple user. Making apps like this is insult to every android user who bought an android device because iOS apps work like this.

Since rooting my HTC Inspire, i have had no crashes or major system issues, until Google decided that i needed to install Google Drive. Yep, i didn't select it, it was PLACED in my App Store updates list. Fail #1. Tried it anyway. After starting, it told me my Drive wasn't ready, yet, and gave me the single option, "Notify Me." Fail #2. It runs constantly in the background, but it isn't in a standby or low power/CPU mode. Completely crashed the OS once, & hung the OS twice, while not in app. Fail #3.

This thing works flawlessly on the android together with the pc . But ... there isnt any ability to to move the storage folder location .... and more ... You dont know where is the downloaded/Synced file is...Its location is in nowhere ....If its a document or music or video file you can open it and mail it to yourself. Hey ... This is the whole point : i can mail the file to me and it would be faster. What if the file is an exe ? Forget about it . Open the file locally on the android ??? funny !. You cant also upload a file/ document directly to a folder in the cloud ... It goes directly to the root of the drive...There goes the order. Making a whole folder/drive available offline is science fiction. Come on google ??? I have an external sd card not for decoration. At least on the pc there aren't any such problems.

As a linux user, without a matching desktop client this app doesn't do me much good. Additionally the 5gb of free storage doesn't compete with Box's 50gb or even the 23gb I'm getting free from dropbox (for referrals).

I can now actually use the app, so that's an improvement from before. However, I am frustrated by what appears to be a persistent glitch: when viewing the My Drive section, I am met with a message saying my drive is empty. This doesn't happen on my phone, and I can see my files online just fine. Interestingly, I can view my files if I go into the recent files section, just not the main drive.

I been using DropBox, and have been happy with the service. Simple, but streamlined. But when Drive was announced, I wanted to switch, to keep everything synced with one email account. The UI is good, but apart from that it still isn't any improvement over DropBox. There is no Auto-Sync (a feature that DropBox has) and I still need to choose individual files, one by one, to be uploaded, which is just ridiculous. Maybe in a few months, after more updates and more improvements, I'll try Drive again. But until then, I'll stick with DropBox.

Has some useful features but just links to the mobile web platform. One can't edit stuff off line at all. Also the web platform is rather bare. It needs work. The main issue the web platform is awful on my dell streak 5. In Portrait mode I can only use a quarter of the screen to edit while the bottom quarter is for my keyboard. The middle half of my screen is blank space. Needs some major work but at least they finally added an app. Not that I'd ever use it to edit or create a doc on my phone.

Great app, syncs almost instantaneously with files recently uploaded to the cloud. My only beef as of now is that there is no support for passcode entry. Negative points / Pontos negativos: - Do not sync automatically anything. You must choose your files through gallery or any app and upload manually. Should have a folder to sync automatic. The option "COPY" just makes a copy for the same place. [não se pode salvar os arquivos do Drive p/ as pastas do seu cel] - Not able to edit docs offline. Offline options is read-only!!! Everything is great BUT you can't just click on a file and download to a folder on your phone. You can make them offline, but then you have to go searching in a root file. Let me edit pdfs and other files, then sync seamlessly and I'll change it to 5 stars. (Also, could we please get the privacy policy updated with a clause for this app? I am a big fan of google's services, but I am left a bit disappointed. The Windows software is great, but the mobile app is a bit poor. cannot upload my file to a specific folder, can't create folders, cannot save the file when it is in use it seems. All of these dropbox can do, unless I am being stupid and can't work it out - or it needsnto be a bit more intuitive. Unless these are actually strategic decisions to increase integration with other services, then it doesnt really make sense.

Google drive is excellent except one major howler which has meant that I will not upgrade to it. In your smartphone you cannot make the folders offline. you have to go to every individual file and long press and select make offline. Therefore if you are thinking of syncing your music collection, you'll have to select offline 3000 times(!), if you want to have your pictures offline, you'll have to go to every single image and make offline and so on. Ive been looking forward to an affordable cloud drive that can simply sync my files across all my devices, with an easy way to manage them if there are storage capacity issues such as smartphones etc. Google almost got there except for this major oversight...

I really wanted this to work and was hoping that it would be like Dropbox, but more integrated with Android. Instead it doesn't even come close to Dropbox. Poor interface and the list of missing features when compared to Dropbox is simply too long to mention here.

Everyone who praises or criteque's google apps including drive need to understand that google wont listen to you either way. Google will only provide something as-is,their way. They are like a celebrity. So long as the world is talking about them, good or bad they have achieved their goal. Remember they are an advertising platform.

Creating a doc in a folder doesn't save it in the folder. Updated docs editor, except spreadsheet is weak and isolated (web bases, no menu options, which is strange from the creator of the OS that promotes unified design now) Otherwise great step towards cloud storage with content creation.

Why can't I create folders (aka collections) or move things into folders from the mobile app?

I really like to UI for Google Drive. Ever since I got the service I have deleted my evernote application, and my drop box, and I have not looked back at all. Also the great thing about Google Drive is that the word processing has gotten much better. It has gotten so good that I have it installed on my Mac, and I sync all my documents and school work seamlessly between my tablet, phone and Mac. The only gripe that I have is that on the tablet I wish I could directly save attached files into Google Drive. Still great Application and service.

I love this app. 5gb free? Whaat! I wish it would let me create folders from my phone though. I have to use a PC to do that. But it does what it's suppossed to do, and very well. I created folders for my school essays, and other documentation I may need to print at any given time. I even downloaded the software for my PC which makes it even easier to drop all of my files in there. It works like a charm, but I want to be able to create folders from my phone. Thanks Google!

From my phone I can't move files into folders. Needs Move to SD option. Can't seem to save WEB pages and the whole feel is clunky. That said, I'm going to keep using it. Looking forward to future updates and WE NEED LINUX SUPPORT!

Still love dropbox, but I am getting 100gb for the same price as 20gb with dropbox. 1 suggestion, please allow multiple downloads like dropbox. It's kind of a pain downloading one file art a time from your phone when you have many. Otherwise, great job Google!

Love google for many reasons good services great prices and products. But this so far does not equal or better dropbox. Yes it is priced better(who can compete cost wise with google really), the issue is that unlike dropbox you cannot see your pics preview unless you load them up first or play slide them. I am sure google will get there soon so I'm still uploading all my files and be waiting but holding on to dropbox which is a great app.

This app is an excellent idea that needs just "a little bit" more. An Android access from Google Drive to Microsoft Live Drive would be perfect. I know they are not allies, but, it would be so beneficial to their devoted customers. "An enemy of my enemy is a friend to me" attitude would be nice to see. The enemy is lack of operation between the two platforms. Windows is the stable mainstream for the last 20 years....integration in to the Microsoft side is just plain common sense....do it for your customers!

You can't create or edit files offline making this app next to useless if you are on a flight or on the underground or in any situation where you might not have internet access, for example if you have switched it off to conserve battery you can then no longer work on your documents. Utterly frustrating and pointless omission which could be so easily resolved.

Needs more features like the auto upload of pics from the camera that drop box has. Most important however is that in the older Google docs app when I made a file available offline it would open at once. With this it still verifies it against the online copy so with a really poor connection I cannot view the file.

If you do business and travel to China, be warned. At the moment, Google Drive is blocked in China! Such. I hope Google can work this out because I frequently travel to China for business and I would like to use this service there.

I came across this app by accident, and i must say it far better than drop box for a number of reasons. No. 1. on the list is you get 5gb for setting up the account which is double the amount you get on dropbox. Also the client for the pc uses less resources than other applications designed for the same purpose

Wonderful app!!! Seriously!!! I've even put it on my fiance's phone so that we can share the "shopping list" doc... he's not so tech savvy but even he loves it :-) Great job Google! I'm very happy! ~ Medion Lifetab

My tablet and cell cannot upload files....I keep getting error codes. My PC does it just fine and yes, I can view them on my hand held devices just fine as well. So, until the bugs work out, I'm sticking with Sneaker Net.

This is overall a very good app for storing files etc, but I am a student and don't always have an internet connection via Wi-Fi or 3G & i downloaded this app for the one thing it doesn't provide: being able to edit & save (not necessarily sync) files on the go,with an internet connection. I may just wiat until something like that happens, or I may switch to a new app,but please make a change to suit those still in school! I love the app but I just don't see the purpose of it when I lack an internet connection unless i want to see finished offline files. Again, please change this!

I really wanted this to work and was hoping that it would be like Dropbox, but more integrated with Android. Instead it doesn't even come close to Dropbox. Poor interface and difficult to operate. How do I move files from one folder to the other? How do I multi select? How do I even create folders?

Offline mode not working - you can't edit or view documents offline. Sync is cumbersome. Interesting concept, but app needs a lot of more work on it.

I love Drive. I use it mostly for school, It is a wonderful resource. I wish they would update the widget, it doesn't really go with the rest of the Google widgets. Also could you allow the app to buffer and sync a few documents between the phone and drive. I would have a document open, then just turning of the screen and turning it back on when i didnt have any signal i could no longer even read the document. I would be fine if editing was disabled in that circumstance

Unfortunately this is not ready app yet. 1. You cannot make offline folders. So if you sync 200 files, you have to make the offline one by one!! 2. You cannot "save as...", as it possible for example in Dropbox (Export). I'm very disappointed about buying additional space in Google Drive. Urgently needs updates!

I was excited to try this out. I created a spreadsheet on my computer in Google Docs, ensured I had it available offline on my tablet. Where I went has *gasp* no internet service. You would think that if something is available offline, you could edit it offline and then sync the changes once you get back online... well this proved to be completely false. So I enabled the WiFi hotspot service on my smart phone, and was able to connect, although because of the conditions (inside a big concrete industrial building at the outskirts of town), my service was less than desirable. So I opened up my spreadsheet again, figure out how to edit (not exactly seamless BTW), plug in the changes I need to make as I collected the information, hit the Submit button, and everything appears hunky dory. Now I get home, and I see that only the last change I made was successfully submitted, and the version on the tablet is sync'd with the online version with no way of getting back all the changes I made before. Needless to say, I'm thoroughly unimpressed.

Great app but missing the feature to offline a folder. If it could do this it would be fantastic.

This application does exactly what it says and nothing else. It synced the files on my computer to my phone. However there is no easily discernible way to copy files from the drive onto your phone for much much much faster use. It all has to be opened from within my drive which slows down the process incredibly. E.g. i was trying to sync and browse through some pictures, i can't put them in my gallery and in the drive i cant scroll from one to the other, i have to open each individually. Great idea, poor execution and oversight on some simpler tasks.

Uninstalled dropbox. Upload is very slow, that's the only issue but great app. The ui is basic and very goodle but as a package much better than dropbox. Thanks google

Wrap the regular Docs mobile website inside some webkit - and you'll have this app. You could use a regular browser for the same tasks. I think Google will do better than this in an eventual future version of the Docs app.
