Another Google Android app has been updated – Google Earth. This is a small maintenance update that primarily fixes problems users with NVidia Tegra 2 devices experienced. As far as I’ve understood, NVidia uses special instructions for the Tegra chip that could make it difficult for the “generic app” to use the full set of features. Guess Google Earth had this problem but luckily the search giant is addressing it now. In addition, the new version (6.1.0.5671) of the application also comes with “other bug fixes” so it’s suggested to get it even if you don’t have a Tegra 2-based smartphone or tablet. Not that it ever really went anywhere, but we can now calm the masses running the latest flavor of Android on their ‘Big Red’ Droid. For those that haven’t heard, Google Earth reportedly went missing from the market as they updated their Verizon Motorola Droid to Android 2.1 sometime last week. Some fears that came along with this error were that Droid users might have to pay for the application. While that might have been a melodramatic first response to this little mix-up, it seems the issues have been resolved and Google Earth is back in the market still free to download. I’m guessing one of the code monkeys at Google forgot to add Verizon as an acceptable carrier to download the application. I give it three stars because I am spoiled by the desktop version. This app does exactly what is says, so it would be 5 stars for that, however, I utilize my google earth on my desktop with my tracks. I record quite a bit of tracks on my phone, would be awesome if I could load them on the app like I can do on my desktop, and even better if it could sync with my desktop version. Just wish it did everything Im already spoiled with. 5 stars if ever that happens, for now, uninstalling.

I installed this on my new tablet a fee days ago and it worked well, buy i removed it to make room for other stuff. Today I trord to reinstall and market claims it is not compatible with my device. Buy Earth for android page says compatible with all of your devices," listing thr tablet explicitly. On that page (this page, right here) I am able to download and install. But now it tells meupon starting that "this application requires an SD card." But I have an 8GB card in the tablet!

I have an Acer Iconia A500 table and this app is as good as the Google Earth on my desktop. The view is the most up to when I zoom in to my favorite fishing spots all the way to the little patches of grass islands that I fish around. It is integrated with my EarthNC GPS app so that from the GPS map I can link directly to Google Earth. It has been freezing my tablet since the last update and causes me to have to shut down my tablet. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Can't be without this app.

ive tried this on my laptop and im pretty familiar with it already, then i tested it out on my phone, works good while connected to wifi at home.. somehow on my motorola xoom(connected to wifi), after viewing the street for atleast 10 secs, suddenly force closes.. i dont know if it doesnt work well with tablets..runs great (for atleast 10 secs).. my xoom is pretty fast at opening this app, just that it force closes T_T please fix it..

I currently own a T-Mobile G2X (LG-P999DW) that is running CyanogenMOD 7. Its built from Android AOSP and is based off Gingerbread 2.3.7. The issue that I am having is that when an update comes out for Google Earth, it says that it isn't compatible with my phone if I try to directly download it from the android market app, but I can install the updates from the android market website. That is the only issue that I can find with it. It isn't a major issue, unless you don't have a computer near by. I will rate it a five once that's fixed.

Some people and their foil hats. I think the tin is leaching into your skin. Strangest complaint I read? "Why do they need fine GPS information?" Uh, this is a MAP application. It's a map, for god's sake. It's obviously to learn where to point the missiles. In other news, the program is stable, quick, and lovely. It's easy to use and fun to "travel" the globe with. End of story. Now we just need an update to Sky Map, but that's out of Google's hands now.

If all you guys that get in trouble worry about where your local is then simply do not download this or any others!! I think this app is great!! I can check out the world on my coutch!!! I'm not woried about my local.. If you don't do anything wrong,, whats to worry about?? Think about it people.. This is a great app!! Plus for all the concerned out there,, if they do watch you and you do nothing wrong what's to worry about?? NOTHING!! Mayb they'd find some1 that did something wrong to u!!! Great app!!!!

I have had this app for a while but never really got into it until I updated it! Just using my location to find my house was fun and seeing exactly my phones location (I live in an apartment) which is in the back of the house by the patio. I also could see that my car is the only one in our parking row! This will be much more fun for my 8 year old to utilize for science! I am just amazed at the use of technology the public can use!

Using my 4G EVO am it updates n runs smoothly, anything of personal info was givin when I set up my gmail to get my android account which means as most have already said on here, is if u want ur personal info protected go get a old flip phone am stay away from any an all smart phones cuz all smart phones request personal stuff to get any of the good services out of them, for those that have probes running the app, u might have to many apps running in the background u might not even use which u need to stop.

The new permissions are explained, although not very clearly, but they are. Access to your accounts and credentials if for "Share your curvy view through G+ or other social apps". The NFC permission is for Android Beam (similar to the iPhones bump feature). Android Beam allows you to send files, locations on maps, apps, websites you are viewing and much more just by putting both NFC-enabled devices together, all this without a single touch of the screen or buttons.

To the "know-it-alls" Although I dont have a problem with the permissions in order to use this app I must say that people do have a legitimate concern because its not about what the permissions are advertised to do rather how they CAN be used without ones knowledge. As we have seen in recent years this IS a potential threat that must be considered when deciding to use an app or service. Its a personal privacy decision, there is no "right" or "wrong" so stop criticizing.

You're using Android, and you're worried about Google getting at your personal information... through Google Earth??? If you've logged in into Google services, Google already has all your contacts, synced to Gmail. If you use Gmail, they already have all your email and all private information it contains. If you're using Google Voice, they have whatever call log and texts and voice messages that have gone through Voice. All your WiFi keys are synced to Google. And so on. If you're worried about Google invading your privacy... why are you using Android? If you really want to keep your personal info away from Google, you have to use a third party ROM that does not include Google apps, including the Market. In which case... why are you downloading and commenting on Market apps? If you really don't trust Google, never log into Google services. If you've logged into Google services, you've already lost the game.

I was excited to hear that v 6.2 would finally support KML/KMZ files. But then immediately disappointed to find that only meant files served over the Internet. Why can't I just load my own private KML file locally on the SD card and view it? It seems that Google Earth for mobile is really created for the locked-down iPhone, so the app is crippled to keep avoid one of the advantages of the Android OS -- simple local file access.

So many experts, yet not one clue. The permissions change seems acceptable considering the change log. I can't NOT have this app anyway, but as 'the developer' is the same one that supplies my OS, my email account, the client I use to connect to it, my browser, cloud storage, and stores my payment and identification credentials, and acts as my intermediary for purchases... it doesn't really make sense to start kicking up a fuss about a fairly obvious permission change. Some people... o.O

On my AT&T Captivate ( Samsung SGH-I897, Firmware 2.2 build FROYO.UCKB1 ) Google Play is now saying I have an update available to Google Earth, but when I try to get the update I get the message "Your device isn't compatible with this item.". I can neither stop Google Play from telling to me to update Google Earth, nor can I get/consume the advertised Google Earth update. I do have Google Earth version 6.1 ( 6.1.0.5671 ) running successfully on the device. This is some serious breakage somewhere, and there seems to be nothing I can do to resolve it other than removing my working Google Earth with no idea if I will ever be able to load it again. Google needs to fix this because my android is running totally stock firmware & never rooted which means I cannot be the only person experiencing this.

Make this version more like the PC version and I might re-install. Allow placemarking for personal use and not just 'phonebook' locations. Would like to be able to sync with my pc to transfer locations saved. Google maps has the same quality images, plus street view, and this program does not include GPS coordinates and placemarking. That is the reason I DL'd GE to begin with, and needed to use Lat/Long and save locations for work. Program is useless and uninstalling. Very disappointed.

Hey Alex I feel your pain cause holy lord people are stupid! They need the gps info because it secretly gives them your bank account info and pin number! I had to quit reading market reviews because I literally started losing faith in humanity. I still don't understand how some of these people have made it this far without some random lion or tiger eating them. According to Darwin that should have happened by now but unfortunately they made it long enough to express their unbelievable stupidity LOL. It's an awesome app for people who don't wear aluminum hats anyway.
