Posted 08/11/2011 at 1:21pm | by Nik Rawlinson and Susie Ochs Believe J.J. Cale, because he knows what he’s talking about: traveling light is the only way to fly. The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or Read More
The apps on Delta's iPads at LaGuardia airport in New York
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jun 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
A few weeks ago I got stuck for many hours at LaGuardia airport in New York (shocking, I realize, given how smooth air travel is these days). While at the Delta terminal I saw dozens of iPads installed next to small booths, designed for travelers to recharge and possibly play a game or order some food. We knew this was coming, but I was surprised to see them there nonetheless. While the iPads were physically locked down, iOS was pretty much just stock, with the apps Delta wants you to use on one screen, and all the stock iOS apps (Mail, Safari, etc.) on the other screen. I didn't see anyone swipe to the second screen while I was at the terminal. As you can see in the screenshot below, the apps Delta has added to the iPad are: Epicurious, Google Earth, SportsTap, Checkers Free HD, CNBC Real-Time for iPad, USA Read More

These Are the Apps That Really Show Off the iPad 2
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Mar 2011 20:57:45 UTC +00:00
Now that you have an iPad 2, you can be excused for wanting to share it with (read: rub it in the face of) those that don’t. But how best to show off the iPad 2′s specific advantages, especially at this early stage in the game? There are a few apps that should do the trick nicely. Let’s look first at the apps that come pre-installed on the iPad itself. FaceTime and Photo Booth are both new to the iPad, and Photo Booth is new to iOS altogether. Both take advantage of one of the most notable changes to the iPad in this hardware revision: the addition of a camera. Both also show off two major reasons why people want an iPad in the first place: for fun and for communication. Neither app is particularly amazing from a technical standpoint (although it is cool to see nine simultaneous live feeds being Read More

Apple's All-Time Top 10 Free iPad Apps
Calendar16 Thu, 20 Jan 2011 20:24:44 UTC +00:00
Yesterday, we went over the top 10 free iPhone Apps available on the App Store (the paid apps, too). It was a list of the most downloaded free applications of all time. While it may not always reflect the quality of each App, it does indicate their popularity. That said, there are also plenty of iPad Apps that are getting attention. Here's a List of the most popular:    Pandora on the iPad is great for listening to music while you browse, or catch up on your RSS feeds. You simply search for the artist or music you want to listen to and hit play. There's a lot to listen to on Pandora radio, and it's a free App worth taking a look at. Much like Google Mobile for iPhone, Google mobile for iPad gives you a suite of Google applications within a single iPad App. You can search the internet Read More

Posted 09/20/2010 at 8:56am | by Florence Ion This morning, Google announced several updates to its widely used mobile services, including Google Apps, Google Docs, and Google Earth for iOS devices. Google's newest update in security may help convince skeptics to store their data in the cloud, after all. The search giant announced Google Apps Premier, Education and Government Edition for users that need that extra bit of heightened security. The Premier package will enable folks to sign in using their password and a one-time verification code that is sent to their mobile phone. The two-step verification process will enable stronger protections to help fend off phishing scams and password reuses. Google is making this feature accessible to organizations both large and small without making it too complicated to set up. Google has also introduced mobile editing capabilities for Google Docs on the iPad and Android platform. Now, you can edit Read More
As part of a blog post discussing its "Google Atmosphere" conference on cloud computing and some new milestones relating to businesses moving to its Google Apps platform, Google reveals that it is preparing to roll out support for Google Docs editing on the iPad and on Android. . . .today we demonstrated new mobile editing capabilities for Google Docs on the Android platform and the iPad. In the next few weeks, co-workers around the world will soon be able to co-edit files simultaneously from an even wider array of devices. Only cloud computing is able to deliver the whole package of productivity-enhancing collaboration, superior reliability and virtually unlimited scale at a price that's affordable for any size organization. Our Atmosphere event is a nice opportunity to step back and fully appreciate the power of the cloud with customers and future customers alike. Google Earth for Android Updated with Ocean View
Calendar16 Tue, 24 Aug 2010 17:34:27 UTC +00:00
The Android app for Google Earth is pretty nice and all, but what about all that blue stuff that you can’t really zoom in on? There must be something underneath that warrants our snooping, right? Well, the latest updated to Google Earth for Android now includes underwater landscapes, letting you pan, zoom, or even explore the murky depths from a first-person perspective, tilting the view to show submerged canyons as far as the eye can see. A new “Explore the Ocean” layer shares a variety of aquatic content, including natural phenomena and wildlife, which can be accessed via Flash bubbles on enabled Android phones. This is a nice expansion on Google Earth, which had early on reached for the stars. The web-based version has been around awhile, and spawned a lot of interesting projects (especially 3D structures) that I’d love to see make the jump to mobile someday. Google Earth is also Read More

Google Earth hits Apple iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 16 Jun 2010 20:57:09 UTC +00:00
You can now experience the glory of the earth on your “magical” Apple tablet, as Google has just released Google Earth for the iPad. While it has been available since the launch of the iPad, that was just the iPhone version scaled up. The latest version has been optimized for the tablet and it should perform much better, Google said in its Lat Long blog. Google Earth for iPad is one of the best ways yet to experience Google Earth. With the combination of an intuitive touch interface, a large screen, and the snappy A4 processor, you a great new way to explore the globe and share your adventures with your friends. The iPad version features full-resolution imagery of multiple locations, and there’s a toolbar on top that can open up various viewing “balloons” without having to hop out of the 3D view. Of course, there’s full touch support as you’ll Read More
Google Earth comes to the iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Jun 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Google has released version 3.0 of Google Earth for iOS which brings full iPad support. The iPad version sports an update UI that makes it easy to switch between layers and select from your My Maps that you have saved under your Google account. Version 3.0 also adds full-resolution imagery for the iPad and a much-needed roads layer. The iPad's large screen gives Google Earth a distinct advantage over using the app on the iPhone. Navigation and tilt are much easier to use and the app is much snappier overall. The large screen touch capabilities also makes it feel like you are holding a fully-interactive globe in your hands. The only feature I wish they would add is a "North-lock." It would be great if you could spin the Earth at a specific orientation without it rotating all over the place. Google Earth Arrives on the iPad [PICS]
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Jun 2010 16:57:57 UTC +00:00
by Google has just updated its Google Earth iPhone app to work with the iPad. The free app brings the desktop Google Earth experience to Apple’s latest device. In addition to offering native iPad support, Google Earth 3.0 also adds a road layer for the iPad and the iPhone 3GS. Testing the app on our 3G iPad, we found that the built-in GPS unit worked quite well when determining our exact location, and that the optional tilt function was great for controlling the axis of the globe to pinpoint location and find out additional information. If you’ve never used Google Earth before, think of it like a giant scalable world map that has the added benefit of not only Street View and terrain indicators, but also pulls in information from Wikipedia, photos added by other users, and the locations of businesses and Google Places. Our only real complaint is that we Read More
Google Earth on iPad...Wow!
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:54:04 UTC +00:00
Google Earth's iPhone application has just been updated with iPad support, allowing you to now touch and swipe your way through the high-resolution satellite and aerial imagery available in the desktop version of Google Earth and its prior mobile counterparts. The end result is an application that's well worth the download, especially considering the price is free. Playing around with the new application, it's almost as if Google Earth was originally designed for the iPad, but had to limit itself to desktop computers and tiny mobile screens until now. Yes, it's just that good. There aren't many new features in this update (version 3.0) which now bundles in iPad support with the Apple mobile application, a 12 MB download. In fact, the only added feature listed on the iTunes page is a road layer for iPad and iPhone 3GS. But for some reason, this native iPad app recaptures the feeling of Read More
First, let me just say that I don't own either an iPhone or an iPad -- but when something looks this good, I can't ignore it. It almost makes me want to get an iPad... and a sofa to sit on while I use it... Anyway, Google Earth 3.0 has been released. It's free, but weighs in at a hefty 13MB... so tether before you download it! Those of you that have used previous versions won't notice many differences. 3.0 does, however, bring complete iPad support -- including high-resolution imagery to make the most of your larger screen. (Incidentally, did anyone notice that the iPhone 4GS has a very similar screen resolution to the iPad?) Other than iPad support, there's a Road layer -- and 'layer support' -- but not being an iPhone or iPad user, I have no idea of that's important or not. Again, it's a free download, so Read More

By Arron Hirst on November 24th, 2009 Google releases the second major version of their Google Earth application. Adds the ability to create and view personal and customizable maps created with their Desktop software on the iPhone, along with a few other welcomed additions. I’ve always been a fan of Google Earth. Ever since it was first introduced I’ve always thought the concept behind it, was incredible. Having the ability to virtually surf the globe, and search in any country, state, region, city, town or street and visually fly to it, get walking or diving directions to it, or simply see and read about the surrounding area via various Wikis, was (and still is) almighty powerful stuff – But really, Who am I kidding? by Jay Hathaway on November 18, 2009 at 04:30 PM When Google brought its amazing global map application, Google Earth, to the iPhone, it was a match made in heaven. (Okay, it was match made on Earth, but bear with with me, here.) The pinching and rotating gestures on the iPhone made exploring the globe on a handheld device fun and easy. Well, now Google Earth is back with version 2.0, which introduces some of the useful features you've come to expect from Earth's sister project, Google Maps. You can grab it from the app store now. Although it's nothing earth-shattering (ha!), Google Earth can now access your saved maps - and other people's public maps - by logging into your Google account and using the My Maps interface. Google Earth 2.0 Allows Map Sharing
Calendar16 Wed, 18 Nov 2009 00:30:14 UTC +00:00

"My Maps" integration not only allows you to extend the functionality of your desktop Google Earth program, but also tune in to other users' shared maps. The second edition of Google’s excellent Google Earth app just hit the App Store and it seems like Google is trying to turn one of the App Store’s most popular apps for its Wow factor into more of an utility. The app now lets you see custom maps prepared on the desktop version, it facilitates the access to the extra informations on the map like Wikipedia articles or pictures and finally it brings up the supported languages count from 18 to 31. I still believe it’s more of a fun app to play around with than an utility but since it’s free you should definitely give it a try! Read More

If you're an adventure seeker with a penchant for storytelling you'll be happy to hear that Google is giving you the visuals you need to illustrate your tales of bravery. In a blog post written by Google Earth Product Manager Peter Birch, the company has updated its iPhone application. While we've always been big fans of the Google Earth desktop version, the company released its iPhone app in 2008 with new attention to the mobile accelerometer and touch features of the iPhone. Users pinched, tapped and tilted their way to stunning satellite views of mountain ranges and far away terrain. The application update builds on these features but adds a touch of the personal. Google Earth for iPhone now offers users a chance to view their customized maps in the iPhone app. Rather than just offering standard maps, users save their pre-existing maps or favorites in the "My Maps" folder and Read More

This is pretty incredible
gbuell 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Anyone who's used Google Earth on the computer knows how powerful, intuitive and basically awe-inspiring it is. The iPhone app gets about as close to that as can be reasonably expected. I am very impressed at the 3D rendering I'm seeing (I'm using a first gen iPod Touch, for the record) although there is some understandable lag, probably more due to my wi fi connection than the program or the iPod. Navigation is seamless and intuitive - it's really fun to hop around landmarks like the Grand Canyon in this, once you get the hang of the gestures. It's definitely worth 5 stars, although it isn't perfect - it doesn't have a built in directions option like Google Maps does, and it doesn't seem to have to options to send locations to the Google Maps application to get directions, which would be the next best thing. Hopefully that's coming in an update. You can locate businesses with this, but links will give you addresses and phone numbers and external website links, not directions integrated into the program. Also, there are only two layers now - Wikipedia and Panoramio. It doesn't seem to have street or traffic layers. I suppose they are leaving the navigation to the Maps application. Not a horrible idea, this probably improves the app's speed and reduces its size, but it would be nice to have that as an option. Still, the ability to view a highly detail 3D version of the Earth on a mobile device is worth 5 stars alone for me, even without some of the frills.
Almost Amazing

I absolutely love Google Earth! And I love that you can tilt your phone to change the perspective. What I DON'T like is that it crashes every time I search for anything, or after I search for my location. Kind of kicks you in the gut a bit. Hopefully they will fix those problems soon!

As with the desktop version, this is a stunning terrain visualizer from Google. (Tilt didn't seem to work at first, but the help file was very instructive.) My biggest complaint so far is that this mobile version doesn't support enough configurable layers -- esp. without Roads, it's going to be difficult to use this as a research tool.

Pros: Graphics are better than when on regular computer since you have tilting planes to view and can move more 3 dimentionally around the world. Cons: Crashes often, sometimes even when I haven't moved yet after bring located. Frustrating! Then have to start all over again. It does seem to remember locations already typed in however. Hope it's fixed soon.
Meh
KyPosey 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
What's the point of an app if it crashes everytime you open it? When it does work it runs so slow I have to reset...I'd rather use the space for music.
Too slow
TorBargo 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I absolutely love Google Earth on my Mac, but this iphone version is pretty horrible. It is too slow to be usable, and the camea gets stuck a lot.
Google Earth
KenYablonsky 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Not going to rate it any higher than 2 stars because it crashes every time I try and do anything. Seems to be a cool app, but will wait for the next update to actually show it off.
Meh. Nice start, but behind.
m0rcheeba 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Graphics are jumpy, it's hard to navigate, and it crashes a lot. The search feature is good, and the international imagery is good, too... But, I like Earthscape a lot better. Earthscape is smoother, has the wikipedia articles labeled (so you're just not randomly clicking on things without knowing what they do), and it has photo previews. Plus, I like uploading my pictures and seeing what my friends are doing in real-time. Google has a good start, and their search has more items (it's google, of course!), but, their only competitor Earthscape is more usable. Plus, Earthscape is free, too.
Great, but I'd turn off the tilt control
jxdxbx 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
You can use a two finger drag to rotate your point of view with more precision than tilting allows. I found the application much more usable with the tilt control switched off.
Crashes so much I haven't been able to do anything
dougryan 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
When I say I can't do anything, I mean it. It starts up most of the time without crashing, but if I try to do ANYTHING, it crashes immediately. Come on Google. Get your apps properly tested before you release this and waste the time of thousands of people.
Very cool
Sattvik 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I think this is going to start a new era for mobile mapping technology ((take the hint, Google :))
Fun but buggy
pikamookie 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is great fun but it's a little laggy and tends to crash. Still amazed that it was ported to the iPhone though.
Crashes all the time
Jarlamiv 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The software has good features.. but the consistent feature though is "crash". 5 stars for the software minus 3 for the crash..
Good, not there yet
flyingember 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
v1.0- quality is low, very slow to load, crashes. I like the perspective tilt but it's slow to use. it's missing all the data you get with the download app which makes google earth worth using.
Crashes often
David the magician 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The terrain looks great. But I'm not sure how to get in 3d mode. I tilt my phone at all angles and it doesn't go into flying mode. It also crashes without fail everytime I use it. It's a cool but useless app.
Beta app, not mature yet
stankhoo 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Tilt feature needs work. Runs very sluggish. Still has a ways to go. Many bugs to fix obviously. Maybe they put this out early to take away some of heat from Earthscape, (which runs smoother then Google earth at the moment) As is now feels more like a beta. Still waiting for the real thing.
Why no street view
Fish Megel 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Cons : 1: crashes too often 2: even on 3g wifi connection it is still very slow 3: why no street view Pros : 1: abilty to read reviews of searched restaraunts hotels shops etc... Very impressive. 2: the views are almost the same As the desktop version. 3: I know that in iPhone update 2.2 we will recieve street view LOL
Not much going for it
Ploni ben ploni 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Sorry. I'm not really seeing why this app is so much better than the maps program that comes with the iPhone
Why? Oh and crashes a lot.
Brandoson 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It works sometimes, but what is the purpose? Maps that is built in can seach and pan around a map. Other than the pointless landcape mode I don't see an advantage... Even after a reboot of the phone, still crashes. This app is a toy. It serves no function other than something to look at.
Totally unstable
gigmo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app crashed repeatedly. It barely even worked. I can't be certain, but after installing this app and having it crash repeatedly, the other apps stopped launching as well. I had to remedy this with a restore of the iPhone.
