Google has updated three of its Android applications today, which include Maps, Listen, and Goggles. Both Maps and Listen bring small but it Goggles seems to have received most of the attention. In a nutshell, here is what all three updates bring to the table: Google Maps: Google Listen: Google Goggles: As you can see, most of everything added within the updates are rather incremental but that’s not to say they aren’t helpful. The new Google Maps feature that will adjust to Night Mode once you enter a tunnel is a very thoughtful addition on Google’s part, and Listen’s audio focus bug fix will surely help many who use it. Google has released a new way to securely log into Google accounts on public computers. Using a smartphone, scan the QR code generated at accounts.google.com/sesame. The Google login prompt will appear on your phone, and logging in there will log you into a session on the desktop. This prevents the user from having to type sensitive login credentials into a public machine, which could be compromised with keylogging software. The new QR code feature is an alternative to Google's 2-step verification. This generates a unique short code on your mobile, which you must input for each desktop login, using the presence of your phone as a form of identification. The big new feature is continuous scanning, i.e., getting your barcode or QR code results instantly without taking a photo first. It’s essentially extracting the relevant information straight out of a video feed from your smartphone’s camera sensor – neat. Also included is a richer text recognition feature. Google's neat-o Goggles app has just been updated to 1.6, and brings intelligent photo recognition to the table. What exactly does that mean? Well, I can't put it much better than the official announcement: Let’s say that I’m going on vacation, and I decide to use my Android-powered phone as my primary camera. Goggles would identify landmarks, paintings and other interesting objects in my photos. I can share these facts about my vacation with my friends right from my Goggles search history. The latest iteration, version 1.3, can now recognize print ads in magazines and solve fairly difficult sudoku puzzles in a few seconds, and is also faster at processing barcodes and QR codes seen with a phone's camera. Version 1.3 of Goggles for Android allows for faster barcode scanning of products. Similar to the basic Barcode scanner for Android, all one needs to do is hover their camera over a barcode, and once it’s recognized, the phone will vibrate and show product information, including where to get it online or if it’s cheaper five blocks away at another store. AJ If you are looking for it, GoogleGoggle it and it will quickly return with info of what it is or where to find it. To test it, we took a snapshot of a SoBe bottle and it returned w/ the following - Logo: w/ info and site to SoBe; Text: SoBe WaterWater search and Image: for the letters So and B graphics. So pretty useful. The only real issue we had was taking a snapshot of a photo or image on a TV or PC - the return response was usually Similar Images (No Objects Recognized) It also has the capability to crop a snapshot, if you take a large photo but are attempting to locate something specific. Next is faces - just to see what it will find. Fun, Fun, Fun Matt I installed Goggles on my device and it ran perfectly on Froyo. However since updating to Gingerbread, whenever I use the snapshot feature the image is mirror-flipped. The pictures turn out normal, it's only the viewfinder that has this problem. It isn't the device, as the built-in camera and other apps work fine. Get it fixed and this would be a must-have. What I really want is effective OCR but the OCR functionality only seems to kick in when scanning a business card. The link suggests that it's actually performing OCR but why the heck doesn't it give me the OCR results as text that I can copy and use?! However, in a rather bizarre piece of omitted functionality, there is no way to crop an image after you take a snapshot (only before). For example, even if Goggles were perfectly capable of recognizing a bar-code within an image, there is no way to tell it to JUST look at the bar-code in an otherwise cluttered scene. Unfortunately, unless you can get the image cropped perfectly when you take a picture, there's virtually no way specifying what part of the image to analyze.
