iOS 5's Find My Friends is visually compelling and simple to use. When it comes to GPS-based friend-finding apps, you either love them or you don't. Google has been a big believer on its Android platform for some time, integrating Google Latitude into all of its Android phones. Apple's iOS 5 update brings a separate downloadable app, Find My Friends (shortened to Find Friends once it installs). In many cases, it's another iOS 5 feature that's very similar to those existing on rival mobile platforms, but there are some features all its own. This weekend, I buddied up with some CNET friends to see how Find My Friends differs from Latitutde and which of the two apps I prefer. One thing to note: Latitude and Find My Friends only work within their respective ecosystems. iOS: Find My Friends The free app is easy to download, once you know to look for Read More

Google updated two of its iOS applications with new features that make it easy to share and connect with your friends. Google Latitude, the social mapping application, now lets you check-in to places when you are out and about. With Latitude, you can see your friends on a map and share your location with them. Now you can use the check-in feature to help them pinpoint the exact place you stopped for happy hour. No worries if you forget to update your status as Latitude, when set to continuously monitor your location, will automatically check you out when your leave. Similar to Foursquare and Gowalla, multiple check-ins at a location will earn you the title of Regular, VIP or Guru for the establishment as well as open up special offers. By Chris Oldroyd, Wednesday, Mar 23, 2011 | Google has updated two of its apps, Google Latitude and Google Places. The apps are designed to help you connect with the people you care about at the places you love! Google Latitude now has the added feature of check-ins, which allow you to see where your friends are on a map as well as choose to continually share your location information. When this setting is turned on, your location and check-ins will be done automatically; you will also be checked out when you leave so your friends know you have left. This is an opt in service and runs in the background on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad’s with 3G. Google Places has also been updated and it now supports thirty different languages. Wherever you are and whatever language you speak, you can now get personalised recommendations for places to visit. Read More
by Google has updated its Latitude app for the iPhone, adding checkins and bringing the app up to date with the Android version, which received that same feature in February 2011. In addition to seeing where your Latitude buddies currently are on a map and sharing your location with them, you can now use the iPhone Latitude app [iTunes link] to check into places. The app requires iOS 4 and above to work; iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch and iPad are supported. Latitude will also automatically check you out when you leave if you set it to continuously update your location, but that feature doesn’t work with the iPod Touch. Google has also translated its Google Places app [iTunes link] into 30 languages and added the ability to personalize your experience by saving places. To see the places you’ve saved or starred, tap on the new “Saved” icon on the Read More

by Lee Mathews on March 22, 2011 at 09:00 AM Android users have been able to post Latitude check-ins via the Google Maps app for some time. Now, Google has brought the same functionality to its Latitude app for iOS. Being able to check-in at specific locations gives the app a much more social feel, and it's nice to be able to do more than track your friends' positions on a map. Google has also delivered a massive internationalization update for the Google Places app. Version 1.1 now supports a total of 30 languages, and it adds a saved places feature which allows you to quickly access your favorite check-in locations while you're out and about. Your saved places will also sync with Maps and Hotpot. Head to the App Store and grab the new Google Latitude and Google Places apps for your iOS device! Read More

Google Latitude Now Available
Calendar16 Mon, 13 Dec 2010 22:58:02 UTC +00:00
Google Latitude is now available for iPhone so you'll never have to wonder where your friends are again. After a bit of a false start last week, Google has officially launched its Latitude app for the iPhone. The free app allows users to continuously broadcast their location to friends and family as well as see where other contacts are on a map at any time. The app also allows for background updating, allowing Latitude to continue to track where you are even when the app is closed. For those concerned about privacy issues Google reminds you that the app is 100 percent opt-in, and your current location will only be shared with friends who you have added and approved to your account. Furthermore, users are free to turn off both the background tracking at any time, and you can also hide your current location or log out entirely if you aren’t Read More
Check-in with Google Latitude on the iPhone
Calendar16 Mon, 13 Dec 2010 20:14:39 UTC +00:00
After a false start last week, Google Latitude is now available for the iPhone.  If you’re not familiar with it, Latitude is a location service along the lines of Foursquare and Facebook Places, and is available for most of the major mobile operating systems. The main difference with Latitude is background updating, so all your friends can see your location in real time, rather than by single check-ins once you arrive somewhere.  It’s not exactly clear how the app shares this information, and only time will tell if your battery thanks you for having Latitude running in the background all the time. The functions are as you would expect: share your location, see the locations of your friends and contact them via SMS, email or by calling.  It’s all customizable to ensure you keep your privacy should you want to, with the ability to control how precisely your location is shared, Read More
Google Latitude als App-Store-Programm verfügbar
Calendar16 Mon, 13 Dec 2010 12:38:26 UTC +00:00
We worked closely with Apple to bring Latitude to the iPhone in a way Apple thought would be best for iPhone users. After we developed a Latitude application for the iPhone, Apple requested we release Latitude as a web application in order to avoid confusion with Maps Read More
