Google Maps, Goggles, and Listen for Android get updated
Calendar16 Wed, 25 Jan 2012 23:49:50 UTC +00:00
Google has updated three of its Android applications today, which include Maps, Listen, and Goggles. Both Maps and Listen bring small but it Goggles seems to have received most of the attention. In a nutshell, here is what all three updates bring to the table: Google Maps: Google Listen: Google Goggles: As you can see, most of everything added within the updates are rather incremental but that’s not to say they aren’t helpful. The new Google Maps feature that will adjust to Night Mode once you enter a tunnel is a very thoughtful addition on Google’s part, and Listen’s audio focus bug fix will surely help many who use it. As for Google Goggles, the application is pretty solid on its own, so any update is a good thing. The same goes for Google Maps. If Google were to Ice Cream-ify the Listen app a bit, I’d probably use it a Read More

Underneath all the CES craze, Google manged to push out an update to its Google Maps application. The new update ushers in much needed improvements to battery life while at the same time improving location tracking within Google Latitude, which is notorious when it comes to sucking the life out of your battery (trust me, I know). Other noteworthy features in this version include: Google also brings a welcomed addition of indoor maps (floor plans) to the mix. The search giant released the first of the floor plans it collected last November, and has added indoor maps for CES and some other parts of Las Vegas. Floor Plans still needs a lot of work as it doesn’t accept submissions for non-public buildings like residences or places that require clearance to enter, but it’s what you’d expect from something in beta. If you haven’t already, be sure to head over to the Android Market and update your Google Read More
by Welcome to this morning’s edition of “First To Know,” a series in which we keep you in the know on what’s happening in the digital world. Today, we’re looking at three particularly interesting stories. Apple Acquires Anobit Apple has acquired Israeli flash storage company Anobit for an undisclosed amount. Apple rarely buys hardware companies, but since it’s the world’s number one flash storage buyer, this acquisition will probably lead to cost savings somewhere down the line. Boxee Promises to Bring Netflix to UK Customers Netflix recently launched in the UK, and now Boxee promises (via Twitter) to bring the video streaming service to its customers. Exactly when this will happen, however, remains unknown. Droid Life’s Top 25 Android Apps Of 2011 – Droid Life
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Dec 2011 21:02:33 UTC +00:00
As we draw closer to the end of year, we wanted to reflect on some of the apps that seemed to have taken 2011 by storm.  It was only a year ago that the Android Market hit the 200,000 apps milestone, and now we are talking 10 billion app downloads and beyond. Whether it was a new messaging client, revamped social networking tool, or even a game that consumed our days to the fullest, this was a great year for applications on Android.  2011 also marked the release of the Amazon Appstore, which changed the way developers could market their apps to potential buyers and also showed that Amazon knew people loved free things. So below, we have a list of the apps that we feel were the most popular, talked about and influential here at Droid Life throughout the year.  We have tried to keep it to apps that were released this Read More

Google Maps for Android Updated to Version 6.0
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Nov 2011 21:19:01 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 1:19 pm.   Google has released a major update to Maps for Android, bringing indoor maps of select locations to your smartphone. If you’re hanging out at a Cinnabon in the mall, the new Maps app will be able to determine what floor you’re on to give you a detailed blueprint of the building and its stores, complete with a blue dot tracking your current location down to the meter (like an IRL minimap!) The user interface has also been improved for quickly toggling features, and a new Places homescreen has been added for finding good eats nearby. The update can be downloaded from the Android Market. Google Maps for Android is fantastic. Between its free GPS Navigation feature, speedy downloads thanks to vector-based maps, and offline caching, the app is leagues ahead of the Maps app on iOS. And it keeps getting better. Today, Maps for Android is getting upgraded to version 6.0, and it includes a long-anticipated feature that presents a huge technical challenge: indoor maps. Yes, you’ll now be able to fire up Maps in some malls, airports, and department stores to get your bearings, complete that ‘little blue dot’ that shows you where you are. You’ll be able to download the app from Android Market right here. Now, Google Maps has offered some basic indoor mapping functionality before now (as you can see in the left screenshot below). But the level of detail has always been seriously lacking, as has the accuracy of the blue dot. With this new release, Google has optimized its Read More
App Smart Extra: Guide to Roadside Amenities
Calendar16 Tue, 29 Nov 2011 00:40:35 UTC +00:00
In an earlier App Smart column, I tested out a few apps that help you track your car’s performance, and maybe remove some of the pain of driving in the meantime. For people with more practical driving needs, check out RoadNinja (free on Apple only). The app helps you figure out the location and names of gas stations and restaurants available at your next highway exit. The theory is good. The reality, so far, is fair. But first things first: like a lot of apps, you can’t really use RoadNinja safely unless you have a co-pilot or you pull off onto the side of the road. The app detects your location and displays a list of coming exits. Or, if you want to plan a little further ahead, you can choose from among the 30,000 exits in its database. For each exit, RoadNinja shows nearby establishments, as well as contact information Read More
The latest Google Maps update is now available in the Android Market for download. Pushing the app to v5.12.0 there is one addition and one removal of a 'feature'. The additon comes by way of live events being added to the Places pages for New York, San Francisco, Paris, Zurich, and London, while the "Post to Twitter" has been removed from Places pages. The update is available now and you'll find the link past the break for you all. Read More
Google Maps was recently updated with a seemingly inconsequential addition: "Reduced app storage size with downloads for different screen resolutions." It isn't until actually updating that we find the real reason for the update. Once you hit update, you will be prompted that permissions have changed and upon review of the updated permission you will notice the new "Control Near Field Communitcations." If you'll remember, one of the cool new features of Android 4.0 shown off at the Google/Samsung event was that of Android Beam. Android Beam uses NFC technology to allow users to quickly share things like web pages, apps, and of course maps/directions by simply tapping devices together. We saw Hugo Barra demo Android Beam using Google Maps and it's safe to say this latest Google Maps update is all about the beam. I did look briefly at the updated version of Google Maps and noticed a subtle UI Read More
What happens when an iPhone/Android app startup wants to get out of its Silicon Valley offices and into local communities to meet users, support local businesses, and see the country? A killer road trip transpires, of course. My Bizzy colleagues and I packed our bags and hit the road in a rented minivan this past July to drive cross-country from San Francisco to Boston. We hosted dinners and meet-ups in 16 cities along the way. In fact, we had such a great response that some of the team hit the road again in mid-September to travel from Portland, OR, to Seattle, WA. If you hit the road, be sure to have these apps on hand. Of course I'm going to include this. After all, we created Bizzy to allow you to easily share your experiences out and about with a simple "Check Out". Others can follow your journey and add any places they may Read More
4 home screens of my Samsung Galaxy S II

As a productivity freak, I’m constantly trying to get more things done during the day and in that sense I organized my phone’s home screen, as well. The 4 home screens I’m using should reflect this… or so I think. Here are the apps and widgets I use throughout the day, hence they are promptly placed for quick access. Widgets: Apps: Apps: Widgets: Apps: Now I want to know how your home screen(s) look like. Which widgets and apps do you use? Google as an app developer has released various applications in the Android Market and some of these come pre-installed on most Android devices – like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search. But others have to be downloaded from Android Market; we have compiled a list of these apps that have been developed by Google. The number comes around 40 apps, although we have tried our best, but we might have missed a few. But not all applications are available in every country and every device; some are regional apps as they support only certain languages or certain apps might support only few device types. So, the best way to check if one of these apps is available in your country is to go to the phone/tablet based Market app and try searching for that particular app – if it comes in the search results than you are good to go. Google has once again updated its Maps app for Android. Version 5.10.0 doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table – it’s mostly about reviews, allowing you to see places you’ve rated 4 and 5 stars right on the map view. What’s more, now when you’re writing a review, you will be able to attach a photo alongside text. You’ll be definitely prompted to update and since we like to keep our software up to date, we advise you to “push the button.” Not sure we’ll actually use the new capability, but you never know. Speaking of capability, this could easily be a part of the upcoming Zagat integration in Google Maps. I would expect to see Zagat’s stars popping all around maps where their reviewers have tested restaurants. Now that I’m thinking those Zagat folks have the best job in the world – they are actually paid to try out Read More
Five essential Google Android apps

Google's popular Android OS (Operating System) is one of the leading systems found on many smartphones today. Android phones come in a variety of prices, sizes and shapes. While many are touchscreen-based devices, there are some with QWERTY keyboards and other form factors to appeal to a wide user base. Applications are the heart and soul of any mobile operating system and here are five essential Google Android applications that each Android user should consider checking out to enhance their Android owning experience. Google Maps and Navigation What most people don't know is that Android phones have a full-featured GPS built in. With Google Maps plus the Google Navigation apps installed, (they are free) users get location search, tracking and turnby-turn navigation right on their device. (www.google. com/mobile/navigation/). Worth Reading? -1 [1 votes] The fine folks at Nielsen over at Nielsen Wire have done some calculating and have found a couple of interesting statistics. First, and perhaps most obviously, from what Nielsen Smartphone Analytics have come up with after metering thousands of Android smartphones, the average Android smartphone user spends 67% of their on-device time, or 56 minutes per day, on apps, while 33% of their smartphone time is spent on the mobile web. This is of course an average person who only spends about an hour and a half on their device a day, a figure I’m sure all of you trump before breakfast is over. Then comes the information on the apps. What’s interesting here is that the top 10 apps in the Android Market do really appear to hold sway over the device market with a steel grip. Google has just pushed a pretty nice update to the Android market for Google Maps. Version 5.9 has added a few useful features. Firstly, you’ll be able to set up custom notifications for transit navigation in cities that support it. Secondly, that transit support has finally made its way to the tablet version of the app (you know, because people actually do carry tablets now). Finally, bubble buttons has returned after disappearing for a short period. When a map result pops up, you can call or navigate directly from that popup instead of having to go to the full Place page. A convenience feature, but a handy one. Go on and grab 5.9 in the Android market. Now when users navigate to maps.google.com from their Android or iOS devices, and choose to share their location with that device, they will see the same features they've come to appreciate from the desktop version of Google Maps. These include the ability to search for what's nearby with suggest and auto complete; get driving, transit, biking and walking directions; view Place pages with photos, ratings and other data; click on icons for popular businesses and transit stations; and access starred locations and personalized My Maps. Google Maps for the mobile browser is not to be confused with the native Maps app for Android and iOS devices, which load immediately and are Read More
Given that more than 40% of Google Maps usage is done via mobile devices, Google has just updated this service to work fully with mobile browsers. Android users may not be very convinced about this update, since the native app does a very good job at being as effective as Google Maps for the web. Google’s intentions, though, are to offer users a consistent full Google Maps experience among multiple platforms (it is also available for iOS, which does not have a native app as efficient as Android’s). Upon visiting maps.google.com on your mobile browser, you will have to opt-in to share your location info with Google. After doing so, the new Google Maps for mobile browsers will be in the palm of your hand, offering features like: Alireza Ali [slideshow] As already mentioned, this may not replace your native app, but having multiple choices is always better for everyone. With gas prices cruising towards five bucks a gallon in most parts of the country, Android owners should tap their phones before they tap a tank. There are many free apps that can help you find cheap gas in your area, identify and avoid traffic jams, and share rides with others via carpools and other forms of public transportation. Before hitting the road, we recommend you download these handy Android apps. Gas prices are escalating in real time. Rather than drive around to look for the best deal in your proximity or try to find a feed for officially published prices, take guidance from other drivers like you who report exact prices per gallon right at the point of pump. Like the iPhone version, GasBuddy allows consumers to track gas prices by location, price and type. Anyone who downloads the app is invited to become a member of the GasBuddy.com community. Read More
While Google Maps already made headlines today for omitting the changelog in the latest update, causing hundreds of 1-star comments, it does have a reason to celebrate, which overshadows this snafu by a long shot. The 50,000,000 installation mark, never before achieved by any app in the Market, has been reached, and by none other than Google Maps, making it the most downloaded Android application ever. It's no surprise - the absolute brilliance of the Maps team helped create a product which wows first-time users, single-handedly lures them over to Android, and keeps innovating time and time again. Who needs a standalone GPS device when you've got Google Maps? I know I don't - my Android device unified at least 3 devices into 1 for me. A whole new pile of location-aware features for people who leave the house have been added to Android Google Maps today, thanks to Google bringing its must-have app up to version 5.3. You’re now able to view your Location History stats on your phone if you’ve already enabled it in Google’s Latitude app, plus there are more “aspects” for users to add when reviewing places. The Android version of the Google Maps app now automatically routes users around traffic when providing directions. Editor's note: Amy Gahran writes about mobile tech for CNN.com. She is a San Francisco Bay Area writer and media consultant whose blog, Contentious.com, explores how people communicate in the online age. (CNN) -- Recently, Google announced that the Android version of its Google Maps app now automatically routes users around traffic when providing directions. According to the Google Blog, Google Maps navigation previously "would choose whichever route was fastest, without taking current traffic conditions into account. It would also generate additional alternate directions, such as the shortest route or one that uses highways instead of side roads. "[Now], our routing algorithms will also apply our knowledge of current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates. That means that navigation will automatically guide you along the best route given the Read More

The web version of the Android Market has made it easier to manage apps for Android devices, but it’s also increased security risks for remotely controlling your app experience. Google (GOOG) is addressing some of these security concerns, closing a cross-site scripting (XSS hole) in the Android Market, which allowed attackers to install apps on Android devices without the user’s consent. The update, discovered by security specialist Jon Oberheide, comes shortly after dozens of infected apps were deployed in the Android Market, heightening malware distress for users. Google has updated one of its own Android apps as well, helping you to navigate through traffic. Google Maps, one of the most frequently updated apps in Google’s line up, will now automatically reroute you away from upcoming traffic jams. The free navigation service uses real-time traffic conditions and analysis to steer you away from road blocks, saving you time and effort as you Read More

Worth Reading? +3 [5 votes] Google has updated to it’s popular Google Maps app which relies on both historical and current traffic data to plan routs and offer alternates. The previous version, could advise drivers of bad traffic ahead and offer a shortest alternative, but often times, the shortest route wasn’t always the fastest. The new version will offer three alternatives, the distance of each route and the projected time it takes to transit the detour. Users don’t have to update the app as the change is done at the server level. That’s great news as all that the driver needs to do is access the Google Maps app as usual. There are also pings to return directions as well. The new Google apps features are available to North American and European markets where Google can link to real time traffic data. Google is a software giant, and many of us user their proprietary applications on our Android phone.  With good reason -- apps like Gmail, Androidify, and YouTube absolutely rock on an Android device.  But did you know that Google, Inc. has a veritable laundry list of apps available on the Android Market?  They're all free, too!  Some of you more Android savvy types might already know of them all, but for the rest of us there's an easy way to have a look at them, using search while in the Market app on your phone or tablet.  Just open the search dialog using the search button on your phone or the search icon in the Market, and look for Pub:"Google Inc."  That's a search by publisher -- in this case, Google, Inc. I’ve been seeing a trend lately – voice calling is back. It looked like texting and social services like Facebook and Twitter were about to make voice calls extinct but there are a few new apps, like yesterday’s Thrutu release, that want to make voice calls more useful and fun than ever before. Today’s fresh apps also include an update to Google Maps and Gym Track, which lets you hit the gym with a plan for success. While the mobile phone has evolved incredibly quickly in recent years, the phone calls we make on them hasn’t all the much. Sure, we have finally reached mobile video call capability with apps like Skype or FaceTime, but everything thing else has remained fairly static. Thrutu aims to bring voice calls into the 21st century. While talking, you can snap and share photos with the person on the other end, send contact information from Read More

Google has updated Google Maps for Android to version 5.1 today, bringing big changes to Latitude.  Where Latitude once was just a pin on a map, now there are check-ins, to connect a place to the location.  Users who opt-in for the new Latitude can set it up to notify them when they are at a location so they can manually check-in, or set up locations to automagically check them in when they arrive.  In either case, Latitude checks you out when you leave.  There are also settings to decide how and where to share your location.  These new features make Latitude much more competitive with other location aware social media, and seem worth checking out if that's your thing.  Grab the official update for Maps through the Android Market.  There's a video after the break that does a great walk through, check it out. Google Maps 5 is now out for Android fully featured with 3D rendering, map drawing and offline reliability. Google Maps was using images for street maps and lines for the vector coordinates and now it comes with 3D. The other cool feature enables us to use 70% less data loading while the images load; meaning faster and quicker results and snappier zooming. The third feature, offline reliability helps us to see and then view the same stuff offline if the connection is lost. Because of the second cool feature of vector maps, the results load faster and henceforth can be viewed offline – no need for network. The app does need 2.0 or higher for the features to work well. DREADING traffic jams this holiday season? There are apps for that. The advent of GPS-enabled cellphones has generated a wave of applications, many of them free, that turn drivers into veritable traffic reporters. Here’s how they work: Your GPS-enabled phone automatically transmits bits of data to Waze, Inrix, Google and other traffic app makers that show where you are and how fast you’re moving. Some apps also allow users to report accidents, closed roads or construction (when parked or in standstill traffic, of course). Each company then combines the information to get an idea of traffic conditions and distributes that across its network. Call it crowd-sourcing from your car. While you are fuming in traffic on I-95, other drivers can benefit from that information and avoid getting stuck themselves. In turn, you get free traffic reports from other users. “It’s real-time traffic, not just where there are road sensors but anywhere Read More
Thanks to a clever hacker by the name of canadiancow we might have our first glimpse of some of the UI tweaks coming to Gingerbread (Android 2.3). Apparently the latest update to Google Maps (4.6) included several icons and styling for Android’s API level 9, which corresponds with Gingerbread (level 8 is Android 2.2). By changing the API level in his build.prop file, he was able to display the new UI styling and that is what you see above (old on the left, new on the right). The new UI styling is much darker and uses bright green for the highlights. This matches up with everything I’ve heard from inside sources and it also lines up with Quentyn’s Gingerbread details posted at Phandroid. Overall it’s not too much to get excited about, but at least it demonstrates how close we are to the official launch of Gingerbread. If new apps from Read More

pvz: pvz is a Plants vs Zombies clone which to say it's a ripjob of the ridiculously fun and popular tower defense game. It's made (or I guess stolen) from some Chinese developer but the gameplay is still just as addicting as the iPhone version even though it's considerably less polished. There's only a few gameplay modes and some buttons in Chinese, but for the most part it's pretty much the same deal. The game is probably going to be pulled for copyright issues but it's as close to Plants vs Zombies on Android as you'll get right now. Google Maps 4.6 Lands in Android Market | AndroidGuys

Yesterday saw yet another update to Google's Map application.  The latest release features some handy options for folks who like to do more with the app than simply get from A to B.  Maps has become one of my favorite apps as it offers a ton of features.  The 4.6 version of the app adds the ability to pare down results in Places by distance, rating, open now, related search, and neighborhood.  Places also looks the same on Android now as it does on the desktop client, making the transition seamless. Latitude adds an experimental  feature in “Real-time updating” which lets users track their friend's locations on Google Maps with temporary updates that happen much quicker.  It is worth pointing out that both friends need to have Android 2.2 and Map 4.6 in order for this to work. Google Maps Navigation is Android’s most talked about and attractive feature, but not everyone needs directions while driving. Some folks want voice guidance while navigating the sidewalks more often than the streets; hence the recently released update for Google Walking Navigation (Android 1.6+ required). When I first heard about Google Walking Navigation, I shrugged my shoulders and said, “That’s cool.” Everyone has a car in my hometown, and our grid-based system makes it easy to figure how to get anywhere once you know the address. But what about the more complex cities like New York? While in Manhattan for the Samsung Galaxy Tab event, I decided to put Walking Navigation to the test in the Big Apple. If the new feature can make it here, it can make it anywhere. I started the day near Chinatown in search of some cheap shirts and figurines to bring home for family and friends. Read More

When I say that Google Maps for Android is one of the most useful programs ever offered on any platform, you might think I'm exaggerating. But I'm completely serious, and what's more, I'm confident that once you begin to unlock its potential you will agree with me. The first thing you see when you open this app is a blinking arrow corresponding to your location on a map of your immediate area. For basic controls you can drag the map, pinch-and-zoom, or double-tap to center it. You can also use the "+" and "-" buttons to zoom. As you zoom in, more details emerge such as street names and "Places." If the Place is a business, government agency, or the like, you can click on it to get a Place Page for more information and options such as Navigate (turn-by-turn, voice-enabled directions), Directions (your choice of car, public transit, bike, or Read More
Worth Reading? +1 [1 votes] Google has just rolled out an update to their Maps application with a much requested feature, walking navigation. It comes meshed with the previously available walking directions and navigation features into one beta product – Walking Navigation (Beta v4.5). This update brings walking directions in the same way we have had turn-by-turn directions for driving. It also brings the new Google Maps search bar at the top of the application scree. Here you can search, check places, and toggle layers in a more convenient way. You can now also filter search results by distance/ratings, view prices categorized with dollar signs, and look at cross streets for places. Google Maps 4.5 is available now as an update in the Android Market. Read More
Google's turn-by-turn GPS software for Android has been updated with a feature that you don't see all that often in GPS programs: walking directions. For those times when you're not behind the wheel of the car, now you can have all the same benefits of the GPS program as it tracks your every movement and tells you where to turn. The functionality will be nearly identical to the existing Navigation app on Android, except it will of course pull from Google Maps' walking directions instead of the driving version. This means stuff like one-way streets, parks, and pedestrian walkways is calculated into the navigable landscape. Users will also be able to opt for a satellite view of the map as they walk down the streets, instead of the standard map view used in the car/driving version of Navigation. Another feature for walking users is the phone will vibrate when you need Read More
Google posted its second Android app update for today with word of updates to Google Maps. Walking Navigation has entered the app as a beta and, like the web version, will plot paths through parks and other areas unique to foot traffic. Adjustments have been made to reflect pedestrian travel: the phone vibrates for direction changes, voice guidance can be turned off and the bird's eye satellite view is turned on by default. The company hoped to ward off lawsuits like one it encountered recently by warning users to use common sense and avoid walking routes that aren't meant for pedestrians. A second update distinct to Street View also simplifies jumping between points. Rather than tap arrows, users can drag the peg figure in the street-level photo itself to reach the intended point. The Google Maps search bar has been updated regardless of mode and allows filtering by distance and ratings, Read More
The Android Market isn't always an easy place to get around. Our first edition of the Lifehacker Pack for Android rounds up essential Android apps—our personal favorites for productivity, multimedia, internet life, and just plain usefulness. Lots of people are picking up new Android phones these days—nearly 200,000 per day, at last count. Google's default apps are pretty handy, but the Market has many great apps, most of them free. Here's a look at our favorite free and cheap Android apps. We're using the great app search and sync service AppBrain to create a Lifehacker Pack for Android. If you install the AppBrain App Market on your Android phone and sign in through the AppBrain site (using a Google OAuth, no-password-revealed log-in), you can check off and click install multiple apps from the list, or visit the individual [AppBrain] link at the end of each app write-up to find out more Read More
It was a pretty good week for the Android Market, with several big brands unveiling their shiny new Android apps. Even Google got in on the fun, updating its Maps app with a dedicated “Places” icon. Barnes & Noble also took the plunge, launching Nook for Android, with Time.com and Gilt not far behind. The Google Maps update includes a “Places” icon for specialized information. For example, you can  filter local venues by category (gas stations, attractions). Venue details include menu links, photos and reviews, incorporating more of Google’s search data into Maps. It’s quite elegant to use, with voice search and custom categories. AOL has recreated its web portal on your Android phone, with its new app aggregating news, mail, Mapquest and search.  Much of the content in the free app is from AOL’s own network, including blogs like Engadget. A second AOL app focusing on financal news is available Read More
Business-ratings app Yelp just got a massive dose of competition from a much larger source. Google updated its Maps for Android (version 4.4) on Monday in the Android Market to make its Place Pages business listings more usable. In doing so, Google's solution for taking business listings mobile resembles Yelp's Android feature set more than it ever has before. Once you install the update (and in our case, reboot your Android phone), you will see a new Places icon in your list of applications. Tapping the icon pulls up a finger-friendly interface with icons for seven categories you might try to locate nearby: restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, and gas stations. It has a search bar at the top, a shortcut to Google Maps app, and a GPS location bar to round out the view. An "add" button helpfully lets you create your own shortcuts for often searched terms, like Read More
Android 1.6+ users with Google Maps should be able to find “an even better way to find places nearby” thanks to an update from Google. There is now an updated version of Maps that offers direct access to Places, which should help people looking to discover what business are located nearby. Places can now provide quick access for locating restaurants, hotels, bars, attractions, ATM’s, gas stations, or user-defined categories for common searches. The icon can be placed on the homescreen for quick access, and a search will lead to an improved version of Place Pages with details that were not previously seen in the mobile version of the site. Now you’ll get pricing, parking, hours, and menu information when available. Google has made it clear that it wants to be the go-to-source for information, and Places is an important part of that strategy in the mobile sector. To enable the new Read More
by In an update coupled with Google Maps 4.4 for Android 1.6 and above, Google has improved the mobile offering of Places. Android owners can now add the Places icon to their home screens and use it to quickly locate nearby venues and their accompanying information-rich business listings. The mobile Places experience now lets users query nearby places by voice or text, or dive into default categories — think restaurants, coffee, bars, hotels and gas stations — or custom-saved categories to search for places. Returned results are based on its expanding database of Place Pages. When pulling up a Place Page for a venue, users can glimpse the open hours for the business, easily see the distance and compass direction, and check out prices, parking and restaurant menu links. The enhanced mobile Places offering will also be rolled out to BlackBerry users when Google updates m.google.com/maps. The Google Places product as Read More
Alright, I need to get this off my chest. I’m an iPhone user, and as such the one thing that makes me stark-raving green with envy is Android’s implementation of Google Maps (and Google Voice, but mostly Maps). Full OS integration? Check. Free turn-by-turn navigation? Check. And — as of today — location aware venue recommendations? Check. Google has introduced a new feature into the Maps for Android application that aims to bring Yelp-like, location based functionality right to your phone. Search restaurants, coffee shops, bars, ATM’s, gas stations… you name it. The new Places application gives you one-touch access to reviews, directions, pertinent venue information and more. All this is neatly wrapped up and packed into the latest Maps update and integrated right into the Android OS. Version 4.4, is in the Android Market and available for download now. Go get em! Yelp’s local search and reviews service has finally landed in the Android Market, with a few cool features rarely seen in first-release apps.  With location-based tools becoming more practical and popular on smartphones, here are a few other apps that will help you get familiar with your surroundings. Yelp has made its way to Android, bringing customer reviews to local venues.  Search for nearby businesses and get their contact details with navigation options.  Leave your own reviews and mark your favorites. The monocle tool adds augmented reality layers to your surroundings, giving you this necessary information overlaid through your phone camera. Google Maps has added an update to support Google Latitude, the tool that brings your friends (Google contacts) into your map. See who’s nearby and send them a message, see reviews of local venues and socially orient yourself whenever you’d like. Need something to do around town? Pull up Goby Read More
The ability of smartphones to truly become our personal assistants is becoming more of a reality, thanks to their ability to talk to us.  From tweets to flash cards, Android apps are finding countless ways to integrate text-to-speech, making us more productive and able to learn. Here are some Android apps that really talk to you. Google’s Eyes-Free Project has a range of free Android apps that support speech recognition. The apps, which include a comic viewer, are free, and work with native and third-party apps on your phone. Pet Android, for instance, responds to your voice commands to carry out various device actions, while Talkback reads aloud almost any text. Google Maps, the free tool that is a default app on most Android devices, added voice navigation not too long ago.  Now, you can have turn-by-turn directions spoken to you as you drive.  There are no fancy voice effects, but Read More
Jumping Ship from iPhone to Android: A Switcher's Guide
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
If you're sick of Apple's walled garden but have yet to make the jump from the iPhone to an Android handset, here's what to expect, how to adjust, and how to cope with certain app withdrawal. Let me preface all of this by saying that for many—not all—the switch from iPhone to Android will feel like being covered in band-aids and ripping each one off over the course of a few weeks. This is not because there's anything particularly wrong with either mobile operating system, but because they have different paradigms. Android and iPhone feel different, look different, and accomplish things in sometimes very different manners. Nonetheless, they're both mobile operating systems with touch interfaces, so it's hard to avoid comparing the two and finding similarities between them. If you decide to ditch your iPhone and give Android a try, be prepared for a little culture shock. While some things are Read More
Google Maps is the most used application on my Android phone and it continues to improve with every release. The latest update brings the version to 4.3 and includes improvements to the place pages, transit station pages with schedules, and suggest friends to add to Latitude. I’ve been playing around with the latest version and I find the new place page updates to be the most useful. Users can easily get an overview of a restaurant from search results page and see what people are saying about the place. This is a great feature for travelers and it makes it even easier to find a great place to eat. The transit schedules also look pretty useful and I plan to try them out next time I travel out of state. For a complete list of cities that are covered, check out the Google Transit page. On the day that iPhone 4′s have started showing up in people’s hands, Google is going all out to convince people that Android isn’t going anywhere, first by opening up Google Voice to everyone and now by significantly upgrading their Google Maps Android app to version 4.3. The most significant (and cool) feature by far is the “What people are saying about” a place feature. Kind of like a heat map for recent comments about a bar, restaurant or other venue, the feature could best be described as a “trending topics” built around one place. Here’s what it looks like: Another significant (and highly useful) feature is around public transit: the public transit stations pages now include upcoming schedules where info is available. Here’s what that looks like: The new version also includes improvements on adding people to Google Latitude as well as to add your location for others to see. The release Read More
With the launch of iOS 4.0 on the iPhone yesterday, Apple fans were treated to several new features, like multitasking and custom backgrounds. Unfortunately for iPhone users, Apple (which develops the iPhone version of Google Maps in house) didn't provide iOS 4.0 users with any new mapping features with which to play. Android users, however, will be happy to learn that Google has pushed an updated version of its Maps app for Android into the marketplace today, adding enhanced support for Place Pages and transit times for trains and busses. Google is looking to bring some of the features found on the desktop version of Google Maps onto Android with this latest release. With version 4.3, Android users will now be able to see transit times for local public transportation - at least where it is supported. Just as on the desktop, users can select a local rail or bus station Read More
When Loopt first launched on the iPhone alongside the App Store in 2008, it looked to be an awesome new location-based service. Apple clearly agreed, as they gave the app plenty of face time: demo slots on stage at major events, appearances in commercials, promotion in the App Store, etc. But the early version of Loopt had a fatal flaw: to work properly, the app had to be running all the time. Now, this wasn’t really Loopt’s flaw, since the iPhone did not allow third-party applications to run in the background — but it was still a flaw. Today, that flaw gets corrected — sort of. The new version of Loopt, 3.0, which is set to appear in the App Store at some point today, is built to use Apple’s new iOS 4 software (formerly known as iPhone OS 4). The biggest new addition to the software is the ability for third-party Read More

Voice guided turn-by-turn navigation in Spain? Claro que si! I've definitely come to rely on Google's turn-by-turn voice navigation to guide me through some twists and turns of California's coastline. Starting Wednesday, Canadians and some Europeans will similarly be able to ditch their satnav systems and fire up their Android phones instead. Google Maps 4.2 with Navigation will pop into the Android Market apps in Canada, and in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland--as long as your smartphone runs 1.6 of the Android operating system or higher. That's not all the localization love Google has in store. Those who speak French, German, Italian, and Spanish will likewise get a chance to try out a beta version of Google Search that's activated by your voice. However, Google warns that its localizations are limited to one-country language models, so the app's digital ears may falter in interpreting Read More
In some cities, pulling out a transit map is an open invite to solicitations from panhandlers, swindlers and car services. But you can avoid such nuisances if you own a smartphone. Then you only have to avoid being ripped off by your cell carrier, or an incompetent software developer. There are many hundreds of mobile apps that help you navigate transit systems around the world. They are almost too easy to create — because many municipalities distribute their transit information widely and freely — and they can be profitable, because users think nothing of spending a buck on one. But these apps can also be a headache for developers to manage over the long term, because transit service can change frequently in any given city. And if you, as a consumer, download an app that has no legs, you pay dearly in wasted time or worse, a trip to the wrong Read More

Any urbanite knows that directions aren't created equally. Pedestrians can usually go wherever their feet can take them, but road traffic has to contend with hated one-way streets. Don't even get us started on cyclists. Luckily for bike riders toting Android phones in their messenger bags, a few days after Google added directions specifically for cyclists, the Maps team rolled biking guidance into the Android app. Will charting a cycle route keep down the number of bike accidents? We hope so. Now cyclists who download the updated Google Maps 4.2 application from the Android Market can find optimal routes for their two-wheelers--both in the directions module and as a map layer that color codes different types of bike-friendly roads and paths. Just be forewarned that the maps and directions are in beta mode, and that they're currently operational in the U.S. only, and only for phones running version 1.6 and above Read More
Google Maps for Android just got a nice update for those of us who like to ride our bikes around town. Just in time for National Bike Month, you can now get biking directions on your Android phone. In addition, Google Maps for Android can now highlight dedicated bike-only trails, roads with bike lanes and roads that are good for biking but don't have bike lanes. Google Maps for Android now also includes a new "share this place" feature that allows users to share information about a place by email and on Buzz, Facebook and Twitter. The updated application is now available in all the countries and languages where Maps is currently available, though the biking directions will only work in the U.S. for now. Google first launched biking directions two months ago. Sadly, these biking directions are currently only available on the Google Maps website and Android. iPhone users can Read More
Numerous upgrades to the Maps application include biking directions, Google Navigation shortcut and most importantly Location Sharing. If you want to meet someone on a street corner or gather friends at an outdoor concert, you can also send an exact location from the map -- even a snapshot of your current location. Just use the share option after selecting a point on the map, your "My Location" blue dot, or yourself in Latitude if it's enabled. Google launches Maps Navigation in UK
Calendar16 Wed, 21 Apr 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
by Rob Welham BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Google has announced it will be making Google Maps Navigation available for Android phones in the UK and Ireland. So far the turn by turn navigation app has only been available to Android users in the U.S. The new UK service will be available for all phones running Android 1.6 and above. The data for the mapping service is streamed over 3G, and can use both a vector view and StreetView mapping. Just as in the U.S., voice search is included too, and searches along the route to tell users where landmarks such as hotels, petrol stations and restaurants are situated along the route. Google account users may also link to their contacts through Gmail and with only a few clicks navigation to a specific address can be activated. There is real-time traffic information with an indicator which glows either red, yellow or Read More
UK Android phone owners will be pleased to learn that the Google Maps Navigation app is now up and running for all handsets powered by Android 1.6 and up. Google Maps Navigation 4.1.1 Beta was sent out to UK devices late last night in a quiet update that extends the Google Maps application to include free navigation services. Using both vector and StreetView mapping for easy navigation around the UK, the app also includes voice search along with searching the route ahead to let you know about local hotels, petrol stations or restaurants that you might encounter on your journey. To activate the new software, you may need to restart your handset, but keep in mind the software is only compatible with Android phones running 1.6 and upwards – so if you own a you’re out of luck. The past year has been huge for Google Android, as the 2-year-old mobile platform has finally begun to gain some major traction.  As a result, Android has filled its Market with over 9,000 apps, creating an array of choices for smartphone users. EasyNote makes the list because of its multi-use capabilities. Create shopping lists, track daily tasks, or simply jot down your thoughts. Folders offer organization, while custom options make nearly every aspect of EasyNote able to serve your needs. Google Updates Maps (Land And Sky) | Android Phone Fans

Google has been busy in the apps department lately, launching both Orkut and Buzz applications to Android Market. But it isn’t only new apps that Google has been working on – they’ve just updated their Maps applications… both of them. Google Maps version 4.1 is now available on Android 1.6+ devices, adding a few neat features. In addition to a Latitude widget and reworked search results, Google now allows you to use a Google Map as one of your Live Wallpapers. You can even have it track your current location using GPS/aGPS and show live traffic data, right there on your homescreen. Of course that sounds like a battery killer but hey – whatever you want! Another huge addition is support for multiple accounts, so if you’ve got a personal and a work email account for instance, you can get the information you’re looking for on either depending on your situation. Google Maps on Android underwent a feature overhaul Sunday evening. Google, Inc., unveiled a new and improved Maps application that adds voice search, reverse directions, public transit or walking directions, integrated street view, updated routes based on GPS location, and improved support for Google Latitude. The updated Android Google Maps is a much better app that’s also friendlier to one-handed operation while driving (not an ideal thing, but hey, people do it). In this screenshot gallery, click on a picture to bring up an explanation of the new changes in the new Google Maps Android. The new Google Maps is not a pushed update, so search for “Google Maps” in the Android Market to download the latest version. Read More
Google has announced that it is taking live information from GPS-enabled mobile phones running Google Maps to provide a new map layer with traffic data. The practice, a form of “crowdsourcing,” uses GPS location and motorist speed to determine traffic flow on major roadways, enabling Google to gather enough data to show users when congestion may cause delays on their commute. Multiplatform application Waze employs a similar concept to gather user data and deliver real-time traffic information on a map. Like Waze, Google Maps is designed to gather information from users and provide data that can help make a more-informed decision about which route or roadway to drive. The feature comes pre-installed on the mytouch 3G and Palm Pre, but not on the iPhone. It allows Google to “expand our traffic layer to cover all U.S. highways and arterials when data is available.” Google is only implementing the expanded traffic data Read More
Now, in a little bit of good news, that navigation app is now available in the Market for anyone in the United States running Android OS 1.6 or later. Unfortunately that still does leave some out, namely those on Sprint, but my bitter feelings aside this does come as a nice surprise. And hopefully this will come to 1.5 with some additional time. The one catch here is that the “navigate to” voice command feature is not available. But moving on to a more positive point, it was noted that this Market version does include the new Layers feature, “which lets you overlay geographical information on the map. View My Maps, transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places, and more.” Now, if we could just get those remaining Android 1.5 phones bumped up, and yes I am talking about you Sprint. Read More
Google, in their infinite update frenzy, has just updated Google Maps to version 4.1. Google says that this update is “introducing a few features that make sorting through search results or quickly seeing Maps info a bit easier.” I’m always for “a bit easier” especially when it comes to maps, an application that I tend to use in a hurry. Some of the key features include an updated search page which gets rid of the usual search tabs at the top of the page and includes all the relevant search data and option on a single page. This should make searching and finding information easier and faster. Another added feature is the ability to swipe back to the list of search results from a single search page that Google is dubbing “Search n’ Swipe”. Urbanspoon: The steady stream of iPhone-to-Android apps continues with Urbanspoon, the app for when you're all "OMFG I can't decide where to eat." Unlike most who make the trip, however, it's actually just as good as the iPhone version. The basic gist is that if you're the indecisive type, you can set up to three parameters—price, location, type of food—shake, and it'll give you a nearby restaurant. Or you can just search for what's nearby, but that's boring. Update: Take note! It only works on the Droid and Nexus One! The Android cracks are starting to get painful. WordPress: Almost uninterestingly straightforward, unless you have a WordPress blog and want to update it for Android, anyway. It's the official WordPress app that'll let you run multiple blogs, moderate comments, and get comment notifications when people start anonymously calling you a d-bag on your blog. And, it's totally open source. TripIt: TripIt's Read More

Crashes Navigation part ALL The Time 5.4.0 and going back to 5.3.1 have always had a bug that crashed the Navigation app that is supported by Google Maps... on an unrooted HTC EVO. They they are aware of the issue. When will they ever fix it? Who knows. But from what I've read hear seems like the EVO is not exclusive to this bug. Too bad, I'd prefer Google Navigation over Sprint Maps anytime before this bug on Google Maps. :(

My friend is having LG Optimus P500 and in his GoogleMap, a new button (Compas mode selection) is appearing but in my mobile its not displaying any new buttons.. I like the app, its just too big, takes up 11mb of phone memory and doesn't save to sd card. If this could be saved i'd give it five stars.
Jay 5.0 stars
Great but... This app definitely get's a 5 star rating in my book. I would like to see a feature where the maps are available in an offline mode. In the offline mode I think it would be acceptable to exclude satellite layer, making the produce more like handheld navigational devices produced by Tom Tom or Garmin. I did uninstall the latest update. A bug was introduced which prevents my Google contacts from appearing in the app. I simply uninstalled the updates and now my contacts show up. Please fix the bug.

Shiitake 3.0 stars
Has many features I don't use and lacks many I need like avoid highway. Blue line for route blocks traffic layer. Often gives the scenic route.
Parrafin 3.0 stars
Don't want all these places updates. Why not put all that stuff in seperate lattitude app. Also why is in Live Wallpapers on the market?
Kole 1.0 stars
Used to be top technology. Now? It's a JOKE. Thinks utah is in iowa, and that there's a video store in the middle of my neighborhood where a home is.
Jack 1.0 stars
Useless as a Navigation! Maps can't be downloaded for offline use (which means it's pretty much useless when travelling). No app2sd support. Often bugs when you update.
