Droid Life’s Top 25 Android Apps Of 2011 – Droid Life
Calendar16 Thu, 22 Dec 2011 21:02:33 UTC +00:00
As we draw closer to the end of year, we wanted to reflect on some of the apps that seemed to have taken 2011 by storm.  It was only a year ago that the Android Market hit the 200,000 apps milestone, and now we are talking 10 billion app downloads and beyond. Whether it was a new messaging client, revamped social networking tool, or even a game that consumed our days to the fullest, this was a great year for applications on Android.  2011 also marked the release of the Amazon Appstore, which changed the way developers could market their apps to potential buyers and also showed that Amazon knew people loved free things. So below, we have a list of the apps that we feel were the most popular, talked about and influential here at Droid Life throughout the year.  We have tried to keep it to apps that were released this Read More
Android software
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Dec 2011 20:20:20 UTC +00:00
Lately I’ve been asked which Android software I’m using so I directed a friend to “my 30 essential Android apps,” the post I wrote about two months ago. However, not everyone likes my list – they want something more structured. Then I prepared the “must-have Android apps” list which goes through different kinds of Android software, helping people decided what they need for what purpose. I went into details in that article and that’s also not that cool for everyone – so here’s something in between, a structured list of apps divided by categories. Browser(s) Social networking apps Mobile office client RSS & News IM & VoIP Utilities There you have it. Hopefully you’ll find something useful here. Widgets for Android - the essential list
Calendar16 Fri, 11 Nov 2011 18:25:26 UTC +00:00
So you want to install some widgets on your Android smartphone but are not sure which ones will help you out and which ones will, well, just occupy the precious screen estate. I’ve been testing so many options and here’s my definite list of must have widgets followed by the “optional stuff,” which I don’t use but know some people who love ‘em. Without further ado, let’s roll… One of the reasons I’m using an Android smartphone rather than the iPhone is that the latter doesn’t allow me to see my tasks without starting some app. With GTasks, you get to see all of your upcoming tasks at glance, right on the homescreen. Tasks are, as expected, synchronized with Google Tasks, allowing you to manage them from your computer. I also use GTasks as my shopping list. This tiny widget shows few of your upcoming calendar entries. You can choose which Read More
Google has updated two of its Android apps, Google Reader and Google Docs, making them look more Ice Cream Sandwich-like. The first of the two apps looks pretty much the same as the previous version, featuring very few changes: there’s the fancy swipe left/right navigation and the ability to share articles via Google+ (rather than Google Buzz). When it comes to Google Docs, the situation is pretty different. The new version looks better and is even more optimized for tablets. Then there’s improved video playback, support for both portrait and landscape modes, while information about your documents is now more easily found. Finally, sharing options now include auto-complete… Updates to both Google Reader and Google Docs are readily available in the Android Market. Heck if you have these apps running on your smartphone or tablet, you’ve probably already updated them. If you don’t have them – Android Market links are below Read More
Creating an aesthetically pleasing home screen for your phone or tablet has become an art in itself, and an entire ecosystem packed with widgets, themes, wallpapers, launchers, and custom ROMs has built up to support it. Sometimes, it can be tough to find a winning combination of elements to create a beautiful and enduring home screen that provides both form and function. For this reason, we have decided to open up a call for gorgeous, well-decorated home screens of all shapes and sizes. Each month we will select the very best home screen configuration(s) and completely break it down into its component parts, providing you with all the necessary information to create your own awesome home screen. Of course, the creator(s) behind the winning home screen(s) will also be rewarded -- with an Android Police t-shirt of their choosing. This contest is now closed. Please keep an eye out for this Read More
Opting for simplicity and a clean presentation, Google Reader streams all your favorite news and blog posts to one location and makes it easy to read on a tablet’s big screen. The app aggregates your RSS feed subscriptions into one big list, and allows you to divide them up into folders, sort entries by what’s newest, and read full articles by tapping any of the headlines in your feed. The app syncs with your Google account too. Reading is a snap, and it’s a handy way to consume a lot of posts. The app is pretty free of frills, though, so if you want to edit your subscriptions or reorganize them, you’ll need to do it on your computer’s browser. For a scaled-down approach to RSS feeds, Google Reader is a great option and carries a lot of ease of use in its tablet iteration. Read More
4 home screens of my Samsung Galaxy S II
Calendar16 Wed, 28 Sep 2011 08:47:25 UTC +00:00
Yesterday I talked about 30 essentail apps I installed on my brand new Samsung II. Today I want to share my home screens with you. As a productivity freak, I’m constantly trying to get more things done during the day and in that sense I organized my phone’s home screen, as well. The 4 home screens I’m using should reflect this… or so I think. Here are the apps and widgets I use throughout the day, hence they are promptly placed for quick access. Widgets: Apps: Apps: Widgets: Apps: Now I want to know how your home screen(s) look like. Which widgets and apps do you use? Google as an app developer has released various applications in the Android Market and some of these come pre-installed on most Android devices – like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search. But others have to be downloaded from Android Market; we have compiled a list of these apps that have been developed by Google. The number comes around 40 apps, although we have tried our best, but we might have missed a few. But not all applications are available in every country and every device; some are regional apps as they support only certain languages or certain apps might support only few device types. So, the best way to check if one of these apps is available in your country is to go to the phone/tablet based Market app and try searching for that particular app – if it comes in the search results than you are good to go. Google's dedicated RSS aggregator, simply called Reader, received an update today that brings full Honeycomb support, as well as a few minor improvements to the app. Added features include a new layout and an improved method of marking items as read, which consists of long pressing on the item. The Honeycomb layout is a familiar one -- it shares the same look-and-feel as its desktop brother now. While the inclusion of a new Honeycomb interface is a much-needed one, I can honestly say the experience doesn't compare to that of the other RSS readers in the Market, namely Newsr. Having said that, I will definitely keep Reader around, as it is still a nice looking app with an incredibly usable interface. Hit the widget below to download. Google Reader Read More
13 Android apps for mobile journalists - TNW Apps
Calendar16 Fri, 05 Aug 2011 16:15:01 UTC +00:00
Contrary to popular belief, the 21st century journalist isn’t all that different to the hacks of days gone by. The skills required today are broadly similar to what was needed 50 years ago – they must have meticulous attention to detail, leave no stone unturned as they strive to unravel the truth behind a story. And above all else, they must be ethically-inclined…in theory, at least. But the tools of the trade today are very different. Out is the payphone and little black book of contacts, and in is the Twitter account, smartphone and other gadgets that can transform a simple hack into an editor, reporter, cameraman, photographer…and whatever else may be required to submit a story. And in a week it was revealed that Android has almost half of the total smartphone market sewn up, here’s a look at a handful of Android apps that can help journalists harness the Read More

| 05/25/2011 The easiest way to share my favorite Android apps, for the HTC ThunderBolt as well as the other devices I review, is to show you my homescreens. Like the iPhone, Android phones allow you to place shortcuts to your favorite apps on your various homescreens. Unlike the iPhone, you can also include widgets that give you fast access to information without opening apps. Above you’ll see five of the seven screens I use daily on my ThunderBolt. These are my favorite Android apps and while there will be a few additions and removals over time, these apps have earned a spot on my home screen. On the main screen of the HTC ThunderBolt you will see my most used apps and widgets. First off you’ll notice the HTC Sense Weather and Clock Widget. This tells me the time, weather and date. I like this widget because I can tap Read More
Google Reader 0.9.3 Review | Android Unknown App - PCWorld
Calendar16 Tue, 05 Apr 2011 00:15:18 UTC +00:00
The Google Reader app for Android has all of the functionality you could hope for. You can choose to look at all new posts or just posts from one site at a time. You can even play most videos right from the app (usually requires Adobe Flash Player). Everything you do on the app syncs with your Web-based Google Reader account, pretty much instantly. If I've been away for a while and I have hundreds of new posts waiting, I actually prefer to use this app over the Web version. I find it so easy just to scroll through the headlines only, star the ones I want to read later, and press 'Mark all as read' to eliminate the clutter instantly. Later I can go to my desktop to read the starred items on a full-size screen. This app is a great implementation of something that is normally Web-based. It's fast, Read More

Here’s a funny thing. A man who’s apparently a big fan of the Atom syndication protocol offered to write us a feature about Atom readers in return for a link to his web site within the article. He gets something that no doubt means a lot to him in “SEO” circles, and we all get a free list feature about RSS readers. Can’t argue with that. So here it is. It’s not the most emotive piece of writing, but it does the job: Top 5 Atom Syndicators for Android Atom is a great way of keeping track of the latest news and content published by your favourite websites as it allows individuals to control which news updates, blogs, articles, forums etc they keep up to date with. OK, so the Android Market is more akin to Lidl or Asda than the iPhone's enormous, indulgent Selfridges-at-Christmas time approach, but the open source nature of Google's OS means there are plenty of apps for Android to be found. And best of all, most of the good stuff on Android is free, thanks to the work of developers who do it for love alone. So here's our pick of the top free Android apps you should install. You can also check out our video of the top 10 free Android games 1. Seesmic There are many Twitter apps on Android - and Twitter itself shook up the scene with the launch of its own-brand app recently - but we're sticking with Seesmic. Works great on HTC desire, too bad it can't be moved to SD, with great sorrow and some disappointment I am moving to aReader.
Tom2652 3.0 stars
Annoying at Times Overall, a great start, but it's buggy at times. Sometimes, while reading a list of, say, 50 articles, the display will clear, and display, "No unread articles?" I'm surprised Google hasn't corrected this yet (it's been around for awhile).

Great app, a bit too large, needs Apps2SD support This is a great implementation of a Google Reader client and it does a pretty good job of displaying my huge reader queue. My only gripe is that cache size is not configurable and it tends to get quite large (6+MB on my phone). I would love to see Apps2SD support on this.

no images, won't sync all articles Google's Reader has a clean interface and works well online, but offline you can't view images in the feed and you often you can't read the articles at all. The app chooses which articles to sync for offline reading on its own so most of your feeds won't be readable offline. The worst of 6 or so readers I've tried.

Nice & reliable, but there's room for improvements I like it very much even thought I didn't test any other RSS reader... I likes it's simplicity, clean UI and speed.. the thing I'm missing is grouping, I have tens of feeds to read and I would like to group them by categories, like News, Technology, Science, Entertainment, Forums, Blogs, etc... so I can get what I wanted at that time... Pro: Subscription management. Searching. Gives you a "Note in Reader" option in the 'share' menu (which lets you apply tags). Con: No pinch-zoom. No swiping for next article. Layout is tablet-optimized, but not stellar. No dark theme. I use Justreader for the reading, and Google Reader for the 'advanced' stuff I mentioned under pros. Reader HD is a sort of mix between these two, but it falls short in certain aspects. Asus Transformer, HC 3.2.

I've used Google Reader since I got my phone (Droid Incredible) and have loved it, but this new version is so slow and has problems. If I mark all items as read, after waiting for them to be marked as read, sometimes it still says I have unread items. Imagine, you sync your device using a fast Wi-Fi connection. As a result, "Reader unread counter" widget shows several unread items. You disconnect from Wi-Fi and enable your [rather slow] mobile connection. And now, it takes too much time to load the Reader app, even if you want to read items that have already been saved (or cached) locally. I would state it once more: after start the app shows "Loading..." icon for a minute or so even if it has several unread items!

I like it very much even thought I didn't test any other RSS reader... I likes it's simplicity, clean UI and speed.. the thing I'm missing is grouping, I have tens of feeds to read and I would like to group them by categories, like News, Technology, Science, Entertainment, Forums, Blogs, etc... so I can get what I wanted at that time... Other feature that will be nice is the ignore list which is basically a keywords that Reader will ignore and hide when a feed had one of these words

This app looks great, but, unfortunately, it's currently unusable for me. Why? Because the font used for feed contents is too msall for my very weal eyes - even the "largets" one. Either allow pinch to zoom to make feed texts as large as I need, or add text-to-speech support, or even both. But since there's no screen magnifier for Android, I can't currently use this app at all.

I installed this the other day and noticed that my Gmail stopped syncing for some reason. To see new messages, I had to refresh manually from inside Gmail. Also, my phone complains about low disc space after a while, since this app seems to store cached articles in a database in the /data partition.

No "Mark as read until here", removed like and didn't replace with +1. Is this a joke? Sharing to G+ spams my feed so +1'ing posts was a great way to share without spamming G+ (not to mention the current sharing is really cheap and not very well integrated). Currently this app became absolutely useless to me. The "Mark as read until here" was awesome on a mobile device... why remove such a great feature? Why not add a +1 button to like stuff?!

Works great and easy to use. As with most Google Apps, it still feels unfinished, but less so than with most.

omfg. So, strips out the social sharing, AND removes the "next post" and "previous post" buttons in favor of swiping, AND doesn't even replace it with anything that actually helps integrate with Google+ (which was the whole reason for this, right?) Thanks for making my only share option the spamming of my friends on Google+. I've been a Google Reader evangelist for half a decade now, but no more. Uninstalling.

Steve 1.0 stars
I can't believe they got rid of the Next/Previous (Up/Down) buttons. In my opinion, that was the BEST part of the app since it helped me go through my RSS feeds very quickly (I have a ton). I know I can swipe right/left and I can use the volume buttons, but this is not nearly as efficient, in my opinion. Now I'll have to sadly search around for a different RSS reader. This was my MOST USED app, I can't believe they'd remove such a fundamental function without at least keeping it as an option.

Google is in a hurry to push out +. What's bad is not waiting for replacement features to be ready before removing what's being replaced. Sharing gone
shinyminidrake 1.0 stars
A supposed upgrade should never cripple key features of an app. Google+ sharing is not even close to the same thing.
Luca 5.0 stars
I love the new swipe to navigate! I used to prefer the web app because volume buttons didn't cut it for me.
airplaneman 1.0 stars
Should not have removed sharing in new version since G+ seems to be dead.
Sean 1.0 stars
By removing the only differentiating feature from Reader, Google has effectively killed it. G+ is not a replacement.
kjozsa 1.0 stars
taking away features won't make g+ succeed. nothing will, actually
Vincent 1.0 stars
Will not update since this is the only acceptable way to view my old shares.

I love this app. I do wish you could +1 and see who has +1'd from the app as you can on the desktop Google Reader

NewsRob offers caching for use offline, including images. I work in a low-signal area where that was a welcome feature. Without the better caching when I have signal, I end up very slowly navigating articles in a low-signal environment.

Imad 3.0 stars
No more Like button and no +1 to replace it either !!!!
Brad 1.0 stars
I don't really care if you want to add the swipe to read, but don't take away the buttons. They are much more efficient and there is no reason to remove a feature that works just fine. Google, please stop going out of your way to alienate your Reader users.

this thing needs a notification. I don't like to have to go into my apps and refresh them all just to check... I prefer it to tell me when something new is there. gReader Pro is awesome for that feature but I like the viewing features and aesthetics of Google reader.
Nicholas 0.0 stars
It's fast and has a lot of great feeds. The widget is great too, the only thing I see that's missing is the ability to read full articles within the app so I don't have to open the browser. I'm wondering if it's so fast because it doesn't have too many superfluous features like that, though.

Haven't been able to read a long article without accidentally swiping to the next one, and losing my place. The brilliance of the reader is it's simplicity, no need to upgrade a previously strong app.

Reader makes following all your favorite feeds manageable. Only frustration? This is basically the perfect usecase for a tablet, but it doesn't take advantage of honeycomb fragments UI yet! What are you waiting for, Google? I'll withhold my fifth star until that changes.

Items suffer irritating delay in being marked as read which really makes you want to strangle someone. Email sharing limits number of characters but doesn't tell you until after trying to send. Scrolling is splotchy and irritating. I an on newest 4.0 google approved nexus so there's no excuse.

Every now and then while scrolling the headlines rearrange. Sometimes the "view" is teleported a few headlines back/forth. Makes it impossible to read more than the 10-20 latest headlines. Otherwise its a great app

I read a lot on Reader, but the update with the swipe to navigate is too sensitive. I'm constantly making accidental swipes and then have to mark stories unread so they don't disappear from the list. Bad change.

I love the Google Reader. However, there are a few things I'd like to see improved. Mainly, the ability to disable swiping. Swiping is also WAY to sensitive, even if you want to use it. Articles with pictures or that are wider than usual are a massive pain to read. The one feature I would love is the ability to show an alert when certain feeds are updated. In fact, this would be a wonderful feature on the web app or perhaps a desktop app as well.

My only complaint about this app is that I'm forced to read feeds on a bright white background! My eyes hurt every morning when I pick up my phone and read my Rss feeds of the day. Google needs to provide themes so that we'll be able to choose white letters on a black surface

Reader mobile app may be the tipping point to turn me off of google reader Web app for good. Doesn't mark items read when opened any more, slides from one item to another too easily and you STILL can't read Web comics comfortably because they don't fit well and cannot be resized. This situation had been the case for months now and i'm sick of it.

I easily run through a few hundred articles each day. I love the service, but I REALLY wish it didn't randomly decide to get stuck refreshing for 15 minutes at a time. It seems like it triggers a refresh of everything Google and takes obnoxiously long while slowing my internet to a halt, even on 4G and WiFi. It isn't every time, but it does usually happen a couple times a day. The web version never has these issues, but the app is so much nicer. Please look into this, El Goog!

Don't like the cheap feel, even the version before this update had a small animation to it's u.i. like the pages would move towards the front when flipping to the next page. they could of made a page flip effect now that you swype left to right..out wouldn't hurt would it? With most phones having 1 gig of ram & dual cores.I don't like having to get other apps especially if google has one of there own, so I'll be sticking with this one but we're moving on to Icecream so it's time to add some visual effects just for added fun. I will look for the last version, I would of preferred a swype up & down for rss reading than left to right.just my opinion.

It's absolutely one of my "must have" android apps and it's rare for an hour to go by without me using it, BUT I've bumped "mark all as read" one too many times to have it wipe everything out. This tool should at least have a setting where it asks "are you sure" or maybe make it smart like the web site and only when it's doing a lot of items. Seriously, does anybody bother to go into Google+ to see what stories their former Google Reader friends are +1'ing? That's a multi-step convoluted process that takes you completely off target. I use to launch reader from widget; then cannot figure out how to use it in case you want to open link in broser. After returning from browser to reader using the app switcher(long press menu on SGS) it will display the original state as opened from widget; need to navigate again to home-feeds, and I don't like this. G+ doesn't intuitively let you read and share your Google Reader subscriptions, why you remove the ability to SHARE RSS feeds? Google Reader should work side-by-side with G+, it doesn't, and that's stupid. The Google Reader app also ditches the cache after some seemingly arbitrary number of feeds, so after some point you can't go back. That's also stupid. I love G+, but your dropping of Reader (and Buzz) functionality makes the products worth LESS instead of more... Reader & Buzz should have seamlessly absorbed into G+, not scrapped. Sharing Reader feeds to G+ should be an obvious update.

I divide my time between Feedly and Google Reader, both on the desktop and on mobile. Feedly is just a joy to use. But Google Reader is what I use when I need to catch up on thousands of feeds if I'm behind. I like that it's all business. The widget is what I'm sort of looking for, but it's just not cutting it. The folder icon is too commanding, and it's in white! If News & Weather widget is black, why not Reader too? Most people with Sense UI phones wouldn't be able to use this and keep a consistent look.

The icon keeps vanishing, and the app is no longer in the app drawer. The only solution is to uninstall and reinstall it. I switched to gReader.

Please let up disable swipeing. I can live without the like feature, but swipe gestures make this impossible to use.

Latest update is AWFUL. Up/Back arrow is gone. Syncs are laggy and have no progress indicator. Can't share stuff. Can't see friend's shared items.

Appreciate the new-style widgets for Honeycomb, but needs a much quicker way of +1'ing feeds. Also, scrolling items is very juddery on GNexus, and the refresh icon needs a spinner
Terry 1.0 stars
Major scrolling problem. If you are scrolling through a long list of feeds when the application auto loads more, your position in the list is randomly skewed. This makes it difficult to find your place again. This bug makes the app almost useless. Has been this way for a while now and Google isn't fixing it. Hopefully either they'll issue an update soon or I'll find a better replacement because it is very frustrating to use. Also, no SD card support and it uses a LOT of memory on the phone. Why?
Brandon 3.0 stars
The swipe left/right to navigate feature makes it difficult to move within a page that is larger than the screen area, but I was forced to update since the previous version always said "could not load page". I never read /every/ article of a feed. I scan through the titles and read the articles selectively. What problem is swipe navigation trying to solve? It only makes more problems for me.
Sergey Kopylov 4.0 stars
It annoys me so much when during the reading of a long feed (and not marking all the posts as read) the feed list is syncronized with the server, read messages are removed and the list is scrolled to a random position. Then I have to scroll it back and find a place where I was reading it. The better way is to adjust scrolling so that I see the same items as I did before the sync.

Not sure where I'd be without a bit of Reader in my life. Works excellently. Maybe though... maybe you could redo the design to use Holo? That would be sexy

Needs an ICS refresh. Very basic app and many third party readers are better, which is rare and surprising for a Google app.
skywalker6705 1.0 stars
Removed buttons and replaced with swipe gestures. Not optional. Removed sharing. Now also swiped articles are instantly discarded, so no going back if you're browsing headlines quickly. App is far less useful since it's G+ overhaul.
David 2.0 stars
Used to be great until swiping was introduced. Please give us the ability to turn it off! Also, after choosing the option to mark all read it's not possible to go back and mark certain individual ones as unread.
Afraz Khan 2.0 stars
Guys come on, it's just an RSS reader! We've had competent RSS apps for many years now, but Google seem to repeatedly mess this Android app up. The latest glitch changes the list of unread items in the left pane randomly, making it impossble to keep track of where you were in the list.
dostum 5.0 stars
This is the best app I like. usually I use google reader everyday. but unfortunately, reader for android tablet have not reader play function. I think if you guys add this function for this app, we will enjoy reader play with tablet PC. hope I make you concern about this matter.

The last version was much better in a variety of ways. First, swipe to advance makes it very difficult to scroll horizontally on a feed item (you have to start scrolling vertically, then scroll horizontally. If you're in a long post and you do it wrong, you'll switch articles, and when you go back you'll be at the top. Not having 1-click (or at least 2-click to select circles) to share stinks, and the G+ sharing from mobile devices does not do proper link sharing - it just pastes the url. Needs work.

I use this app every day, and love it EXCEPT the left-right swipe...it's too sensitive and I lose my place in what I was reading. It should be an option in settings. Irritating.
Nick Strite 1.0 stars
There used to autofit now that's not even an option, I can't even zoom out. Uncool on g2 and a500

No offline reading...! Won't fit articles to the .screen... I expected better. That said, online reading is super fast...

Loads, then re-loads articles on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Not always, but enough to make me question why this problem still exists on ICS's flagship phone. As another reviewer mentions, night viewing mode would be awesome too.
Chester 4.0 stars
Great app, but it should allow users to increase font size as a general setting. Some feeds become unreadable, in specual for users with disabilities
Dave 3.0 stars
Mostly fine but when used on a Galaxy Nexus it will jump to random points in the article list, usually when new articles have been loaded - sometimes this happens during an action e.g. starring. If this is fixed it would be perfect.
Neil 3.0 stars
When it refreshes a list, it automatically scrolls to the end of a list. Why not stay at the beginning? Very frustrating
Pipsissiwa 3.0 stars
Every time I use it it appears to keep everything, so the 'data's gets to double figures of meg in a couple of days. My phone doesn't have much storage so I have to keep wiping the data. This makes me reluctant to use it. Want to put it on my 16gig SD card but it won't let me.

Works as promised and the UI is rather nice on my ICS NS. Not a fan of some of the flashier RSS readers on the market. I love Google Reader because it is simple and well designed.
Kevin 3.0 stars
Should always show you cached page even if your connection is low! Swiping left right also annoying as it resets to top.
Dani 5.0 stars
It's just the best for simple, fast reading. I love the ability to star entries for later reading, the ease of use and the clean screen while browsing.

I saw all the comments about how much people don't like this app but I find that it exceeds my expectations. For instance the swipe navigation works just fine. However, it could benefit from some pinch to zoom...

It works...too bad they can't combine the best of Google Reader and Google Currents into one app.

I've only had this app since the latest update so I don't know what has changed compared to past versions, but I find this app useful on every sense of the word. It delivers news to my phone - which is what its supposed to do.
contronatura 2.0 stars
When trying to scroll, it always mistakenly swipes left or right and takes to the top of the story, and you have to seek where you were reading. Very unpolished and buggy, especially for something made by Google. Also it's plain ugly.
Tom 1.0 stars
confusing when making all as read, and seems to randomly switch between new items and all items. This used to be my favorite app - now its horrible
Luke P 2.0 stars
Please make swipe configurable.. I read lots of posts with code in it where I have to scroll left and right.. I have to scroll down first then left and right. If I make a mistake it marks the post I've accidentaly moved to as read and I lose my place. Would also be good to have more control over pre fetching.
Marc Aron Bøgh 3.0 stars
I really don't like the new swipe feature. If your reading fast you end up switching back and fourth between news/blogs and have to scroll down again

It's horrible how it will swipe to another item instead of scrolling down. Can't even read a normal article without being annoyed by this!

Also, thank you for confusing and switching the "mark all items read button" and "switch to view all item button". You just can't get this one right.

Crashing for me quite a lot on ICS. Otherwise great. @Paul below, it's not designed for podcasts, use Google Listen for that instead.

Lots of lag and freeze issues. Tested on HTC inspire, Samsung galaxy s2 and nook color. Takes a long time to update feed and update already read artic
Sam 3.0 stars
It's simple, lightweight and functional, and syncs with NetNewsWire on my Mac perfectly well. However, Google really needs to work on optimising the frame rate whilst scrolling through news feeds. On my Galaxy Nexus there is needless lag. It's just text scrolling, so the present lag is inexcusable and needs to be fixed. The new Pulse updates puts Google Reader in the back seat, for now.

Mark as read is in awkward place. No mark previous as read. No sharing inside program among contacts like before.

A very practical app. Would be great if it was presented a little prettier. Shame not every site has RSS feeds.

Google Reader for android used to be great. But since the interface overhaul promoted by Google in favor of a more ICS-like experience, things keep getting worse. If you select an article to read it on a browser, when you are back it does not go to the previous position properly. Also, when I am browsing through a folder or a feed, it suddenly refreshes in order to hide read items and once more it does not keep the proper position.

This app has good UI but is too big for phones like Nexus One or ChaCha with only 150 megs of internal storage. App does not support Apps2SD and stores data into internal phone memory instead of volatile phone cache or SD card. Thus unusable for me.
griff 4.0 stars
last update was a huge speed improvement on an already quick app. only problem is the removal of automatically marking articles as read (happens when leaving the article view but not when entering/leaving the specific article, might be a setting i'm missing). highly reccommended

Please don't throw away my scroll position on orientation changes and left/right swipes. It is very annoying when reading long articles. Happened to me three times on one medium sized article.

Love this app! I've never had problems with crashing. The only thing to fix - please tweak the tagging system. It is very slow and not user friendly.
Lindsay 1.0 stars
As of the newest update, I'm planning to start looking for a replacement. The swiping makes the app incredibly difficult for me to use. As I often read on the bus while I only have one hand free. With such a set-up, the swiping is way too sensitive and jumps back to the start of the article. It's pretty much impossible for me to really use it now.
Katrina 2.0 stars
I loved this reader up until the update that integrated the swipe feature. I read a lot of photography blogs, and can not see any photos because of swipe. Also, if my finger isn't perfectly up and down for scrolling, I am taken to the next Page. Add an option to disable swipe, and I will come back to this app. Droid Charge with Gingerbread.

Very choppy scrolling in list view on Galaxy Nexus. Choppy scrolling is awful and distracting, and just shouldn't exist in any app.
Dustin 4.0 stars
I understand what the idea was behind this, but it makes the app nearly unusable with 1 hand. The slightest movement from left to right changes the story you're reading and makes you have to scroll all the way back to where you were. Annoying. Please include an option to disable.

After a long time of searching, finally found I had to manually add a folder called "Listen Subscriptions" in the Google Reader App for Listen to be able to find them. Not the end of the world I know, but I expected better really. Oh and the search function seems a bit weak and aimed mainly at US market? No UK localisation?
Nilesh 3.0 stars
The new swipe feature is great but I was hoping for an interface update too. At the very least, an option to change the font size on the feed lists.

Sometimes I wonder if developers at least try once what they develop. Cmon... how can't you see the horrible implementation of swipe?

...at best. This WAS a solid, basic app before update. Clearly it has been rewritten by a summer intern. Without adult supervision. I'm losing that old comfortable feeling with the G. If done by a senior engineer, you really should look for a new career. Seriously bad code.

I have been using reader ever since I found RSS feeds. I'm like the Google integration but may have to bail if the left right swipe to another post isn't made less sensitive. I am constantly scrolling down and accidentally swiping to another post, only to swipe back and have to start at the top of the feed I was reading and try to scroll down again.

La uso mucho para no perderme nada de lo que dicen los blogs que sigo y estoy al día pero necesita notificaciones porque quiero leer las noticias al tiempo que se publican y no cuando me de por mirar la aplicación.

With the latest update they removed the buttons used to move from one post to the next. Now you swipe with your finger. It's annoying.
David Levine 4.0 stars
This is great for a free reader. You can either swipe left or right to move through articles or use the volume rocker. The only things that seems to be an issue is when going from article to article by swiping or using the volume rocker, the app will keep me from advancing and I have to go back to the main screen and then open and individual article to resume. Not sure why this occurs sometimes.

This project is nice but not useful because it takes to much internal memory for downloading feeds. If they fix the memory to support the sd card it should be a great app.
